Our Mission

F.F. Thompson Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit

organization, is committed to achieving philanthropic

support for the services and priority needs of the

system’s affiliated tax-exempt corporations and

to overseeing the management of restricted and

unrestricted funds of the foundation.

“Building a Healthy Future.” What seemed a dream just a few years ago

has become a reality at Thompson Health.

We look back on 2011 with a great sense of pride and accomplishment.

It was a year of significant growth and many exciting changes, including

the grand opening of the Constellation Center for Health and Healing

at F.F. Thompson Hospital. This milestone marked the completion of

the first phase of Project Excel, our 103,000-square-foot expansion and

renovation project.

All of us at Thompson Health are forever grateful to the individuals, groups

and corporate partners recognized on the pages of this report. Together,

these loyal friends continue to make milestones possible by supporting our

capital campaign, annual fund, fundraising initiatives and vital programs.

At Thompson, we wished upon stars…we reached for them…and,

thanks to all of you, our dreams have come true. On behalf of the entire

health system, we extend our heartfelt appreciation for your generosity

and steadfast support. It has helped Thompson to provide exemplary health

care – and it has made our health system a truly great regional resource.

The Sands family has a long legacy of generous support for Thompson

Health, including the Sands Cancer Center, Intensive Care Unit,

Ferris Hills and Clark Meadows, as well as numerous other important

projects throughout our campus.

Their gift toward the new Constellation Center for Health and Healing

at F.F. Thompson Hospital is a tremendous statement of support

for our mission, our Associates and our community. At the end of

2011, we celebrated the grand opening of this state-of-the-art Center,

featuring The Anthony and Laura Muchard Family Lobby and

The Robert J. and Ruth E. Craugh Rehabilitation Services Center.

Designed to meet the changing health care needs

of our community, Constellation Center’s open

spaces and walls of windows invite nature in to

create a calming, healing environment.

We are exceedingly grateful for the generosity of

the Sands family. This, along with the support of

other dedicated visionaries in our community,

will carry Thompson Health well into the future.

When completed in 2012, our Constellation Center for Health and Healing will provide the space and modernization needed for Thompson to continue to deliver quality, compassionate health care for future generations. The Center includes a new Surgical Care Center with the latest technological advancements and The Wegman Family Nutritional Services Center. Renovations to the Medical Laboratory, Intensive Care Unit and The Fralick Cardiac Rehabilitation and Fitness Center will also be unveiled during the year.

After receiving a generous lead gift from the Sands family and Constellation Brands early in 2010, Thompson Health was on its way toward our ambitious goal of $14 million to help fund Project Excel. Through our Building a Healthy Future Capital Campaign, this goal was not only met, but exceeded.

Sharing a Dream “As members of the community since 1949, my late husband Anthony ‘Tony’ and I were patients at Thompson Hospital several times – and all of our experiences were positive. We always liked Thompson’s personal atmosphere, as well as the one-on-one attention provided by the physicians and staff.

I support Thompson because of its long tradition of providing exceptional care and to help fulfill a dream of Tony’s. He worked his way through Cornell University and wanted to become a doctor, but never had the opportunity to do so. When Tony was ill and cared for by Thompson, we talked about helping others who also shared the same dream of becoming a medical professional. When I heard about Project Excel, I thought that by doing my part to make it a reality, I would be helping Thompson staff members and patients alike. What better way to honor my husband’s memory.”

Family Lobby, the gateway to all that the new

Constellation Center for Health and Healing provides.

Our new lobby offers patients and their families a

host of benefits and amenities, including a volunteer

ambassador who supplies information and directions,

convenient access to outpatient rehabilitation services

plus surgical care services, all in an aesthetically

pleasing atmosphere. A sleek, contemporary staircase,

the centerpiece of our lobby, leads patients to the

second level that features a warm and inviting waiting

area for our Surgical Care Center.

Our family has always treasured Thompson Health, but it wasn’t until Linda’s 20+-year tenure as CEO did we fully understand its history, role in our community and the tremendous responsibility we all share for its vibrant future.

The late Robert and Ruth Craugh always put

their hearts and hands to work for others. Their

commitment to our community was truly an

example to be followed.

In 2001, Thompson Health recognized Bob and

Ruth with the Star of Distinction, our highest award

for “sustained and significant contributions to

Thompson Health and our community.”

Bob was a Master Sergeant in the United States

Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific

during WWII, as well as during the Korean War.

He enjoyed a long and distinguished career at

Canandaigua National Bank and Trust Co. and

was elected president of the Canandaigua Kiwanis Club

and Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce. Bob was also named

“Mr. Canandaigua” by his friends, colleagues and neighbors and

was active on the Boards of the Wood Library, the YMCA and

St. Mary’s School. As one of the original members of the Board for

F.F. Thompson Foundation and F.F.T. Senior Communities, Inc.,

Bob served as Treasurer of F.F. Thompson Hospital for several years.

Ruth’s interests were as varied as her husband’s and her involvement

in them was just as deep. She translated books into Braille and

served as Treasurer of the Thompson Guild for many years. Ruth was

actively involved with the Neighbor to Neighbor Program and the

Society of St. Vincent DePaul. In 1993, she received the Antoinette

Granger Award for her work with the Granger Homestead.

Bob and Ruth’s list of accomplishments was long and their gifts to

our community were many. Today, their legacy lives on through a

generous bequest to Thompson Health – and at the new Robert J.

and Ruth E. Craugh Rehabilitation Services Center.

To meet the increasing demands of our community’s aging yet

active population, high-quality rehabilitation services must be

readily accessible for those who need them most.

In December, Thompson Health opened the new Robert J. and

Ruth E. Craugh Rehabilitation Services Center to help improve

the quality of life and health of our community members.

This Center was designed for the seamless integration of physical

therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and sports medicine

services. In addition to enhanced safety and confidentiality, our

state-of-the-art facility offers convenience and an expanded

aquatic therapy center, all in a bright, comfortable setting.

More than 850 gifts to our Building a Healthy Future Capital Campaign

helped make this Center a reality. Thank you to our many loyal

supporters who shared their treasure to benefit the health and

well-being of our entire community.

Gifts from the GuildWith more than 200 members and several active

committees, the Thompson Guild has been an integral part

of our health system for more than a century. Our dedicated

Guild members give of their time, talent, creativity and hard

work to raise funds for Thompson. Countless individuals

have been touched by their many fundraising initiatives

that provide generous and varied support throughout the

health system. The proceeds from two 2011 fundraisers, the

Build-A-Basket competition and raffle and the Thompson

Guild Fashion Show, helped fund the purchase of medical

equipment and furnishings requested by Associates to

enhance our environment of care.

Birthday WishesIn 2008, Ryan Hubler began donating his birthday gifts

to young patients at Thompson Health. Each year, Ryan

requests a “Wish List” from Thompson and mails it along

with his birthday party invitation. Instead of presents,

his party guests are asked to bring items that are on

the Wish List. Ryan then gives each and every gift to

Thompson, helping to provide young patients with a bit

of entertainment during their stay.

This past year alone, Ryan and his sister Maren donated

games, books, puzzles, children’s movies, newborn clothing

and electronics such as a 22-inch television and DVD player

to the hospital. Their compassion touches the lives of so

many young patients – and we at Thompson Health hope

their generous spirits will inspire others to give whatever

they can to help those in need.

Thank You, Thompson GuildNumerous gifts made possible by the Thompson Guild in 2011 included funds to support the purchase of our full-field digital mammography system, new portable bladder ultrasound equipment and three tabletop pulse oximeters for the Medical/Surgical units, a fiber-optic endoscope for Speech Pathology, a new stretcher and Broda® Pedal Lounge Chair for M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center, four new wheelchairs to benefit several hospital departments, a digital camera for the Emergency Department, three Lactina®

Select Breastpumps for the F.F. Thompson Birthing Center, ten conference tables and three enclosed delivery carts to implement our room service program.

The Sharon M. Pepper Wish Upon a Star ProgramWhen Thompson Health Senior Living Services launched the

Wish Upon a Star program in 2010, our hope was to involve the entire

community in enhancing the lives of residents at our skilled-nursing

facility, as well as change the perception of the elderly. Our wish

came true.

Residents at our 188-bed M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center

continue to enter their wishes into “dream books,” which are kept

by the nurses’ stations. On a quarterly basis, a special ceremony

is held to share photos of past wishes that have been

granted – then names of the next five lucky residents

are drawn. During the three months that follow, the

Wish Upon a Star committee begins the process of

granting their wishes, too.

Since its inception, our Wish Upon a Star program has

fulfilled more than 40 wishes, including a trip to

New York City to see a Mets game, a hot air balloon

ride, a visit from a string quartet, a lakeside anniversary

dinner, an afternoon at the theater with loved ones

and many more!

The program, which is truly a bright spot in the lives

of our residents, was renamed the Sharon M. Pepper

Wish Upon a Star Program in 2011 to honor her

20 years of dedication and leadership.

MAKING WISHES COME TRUE

Charity Cup ChampionsIn September, Thompson Health’s Wish Upon a Star program was one of six charities selected to participate in the 4th Annual Finger Lakes Charity Cup, hosted by Finger Lakes Casino & Racetrack in Farmington. The chosen charities participated in six races – and winners were based on the cumulative results of each race. Our Wish Upon a Star program placed fourth, receiving a donation prize of $4,000 out of the total Charity Cup winnings of $30,000. “After seeing a wish granted right here at the Racetrack, we were pleased to know that Thompson’s ‘winnings’ would be used to help many other residents’ wishes come true,” says Steve Martin, Senior Director of Marketing at Finger Lakes Casino & Racetrack.

A Reason to RideThis past July, residents of the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center were revved up as the Canandaigua Moose Riders Club roared up Parrish Street on their motorcycles to the entrance of the skilled-nursing facility. The riders were there to present a check benefiting the Wish Upon a Star program to Sharon Pepper, former Senior Vice President of Senior Living Services at Thompson Health. The funds, which totaled $1,670, were raised during the inaugural Reason to Ride Dice Run, held by the Canandaigua Moose Riders. “It really warmed our hearts to see the excitement that our visit brought. Knowing that our efforts will add a spark to residents’ lives is especially rewarding,” states Jesse Orbaker, President, Canandaigua Moose Riders Club.

Annual Fund Gifts made to F.F. Thompson Foundation’s Annual Fund have a tremendous impact. Since they are unrestricted gifts, the funds are used when and where they are most needed. Annual Fund donations help to sustain and build Thompson’s environment of care by ensuring that our health care system has the most modern facilities and leading-edge equipment for our patients, their families and our entire community.

“ Our family has been part of the community served by Thompson Health for many years. All of our children and grandchildren were born at the hospital – and ‘Mom’ was a resident at the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center until her recent passing. We believe that at large health care facilities, patients can get lost in the shuffle. Monthly Giving Our Monthly Giving program is a convenient way to make a recurring gift – and to provide Thompson Health with the reliable support that is vital to continuing our 105+-year tradition of delivering exceptional health care to our community.

The process is easy. Simply mail us a voided check along with the amount of your monthly gift and the date you would like it to be made each month. You can specify when your monthly giving should begin and end, as well as change the donation amount or cancel at any time. Recurring gifts can also be charged to your credit card by contacting the F.F. Thompson Foundation at 585-396-6155.

We learned the importance of this when Charles underwent three years of invasive tests at other health care facilities to determine the cause of his progressive weakness. It was the team of experts at Thompson that finally – and successfully – diagnosed his condition. After having surgery, Charles enrolled in Thompson’s Cardiac Rehabilitation program, which in his own words,

‘changed my life and made me feel better than my old self.’ Thompson’s doctors and Associates always treated Charles like he was their only patient, which is not a common finding these days. F.F. Thompson Foundation 2011 Report on Giving

This past July, a record 180 bicyclists from five states including Arizona and Texas participated in the 9th Annual Tour de Thompson, held along the scenic routes of the Bristol Hills. The tour’s proceeds of $5,000 benefited Thompson Health’s Aftercare Program, a rehabilitative service that helps individuals with chronic disease maintain their level of function and independence in the community.

Young Philanthropists Community members of all ages – even the very young – support Thompson Health in a variety of ways. Abreana C. Mattice was so appreciative of the care she received while a patient at Thompson, as well as a special gift from her parents, she wanted other children to feel the same way.

“I started asking my family, friends and members of my church to donate money, new toys and gift bags for young patients at the hospital. I fill the bags myself – blue for boys, pink for girls – and hope the children will enjoy spending lots of time playing with the toys,” says Abreana. “ As a Chaplain’s volunteer at Thompson Hospital for approximately nine years, I often visited residents, including family members, at Thompson’s M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center. When my late husband John was ill, I would frequently stay overnight at the Continuing

Care Center to be near him. A staff member would bring a sleeper chair from the Gardens avenue since the Pines avenue did not have a chair of its own. After John passed away, I decided to fund the purchase of two sleeper chairs – one for each avenue – in his memory. I feel blessed to have a facility of Thompson Health’s caliber nearby and I know John felt the same way. Hopefully my gifts will help make a difference in someone’s quality of life.”
