WelcomeFF Massive is a typeface system designed by Amsterdam based designer Donald Beekman. With original sketches dating back as far as 2001, FF Massive already has a long history and has since been used in many DBXL designs. FF Massive issuitable for logos, flyers, posters and magazine headlines. Be it drum’n’bass, techno or trance, FF Massive has a distinct musical background.

With its 2010 release the FF Massive OT family was expanded with an extra outline version into eight different Open Type fonts, divided in four variations which together form a versatile typo graphic system. The eight different FF Massive variations enable the user to compose a number of combinations, which can lead to surprising results, especially with the use of contrasting colours.

This manual will explain how the FF Massive type system is best employed. Enjoy!

WeIGHts

FF Massive was designed in eight different variations. Four different weights, in two line thicknesses. The eight variations are:

1. FF Massive 1 Line is the basic outline version with a thin outline:

FF Massive 1 Line2. FF Massive 2 Line is the basic outline version with a thicker outline, more suitable for smaller text:

FF Massive 2 Line3. FF Massive 1 Solid is the solid equivalent of 1 Line. The inner shapes and the spaces between the letters are of the same line thickness as the outlines of the 1 Line weight:

ff Massive 1 solid4. FF Massive 2 Solid is the solid equivalent of 2 Line. The inner shapes and the spaces between the letters are of the same line thickness as the outlines of the 2 Line weight:

The FF Massive 1 Line and 2 Line weights were split in two parts: FF Massive 1 Top contains the inner shapes of 1 Line, FF Massive 1 Base contains the outline shapes. FF Massive 2 Top contains the inner shapes of 2 Line, FF Massive 2 Base contains the outline shapes.

5. FF Massive 1 Base is the bottom layer of 1 Line:

FF Massive Solid weights can be used as a highlight effect in combination with the FF Massive Line weights, as both Solid and Line weights have the same height.

FF Massive 1 Line and FF Massive 2 Line can be combined in any size. The outlines of the characters overlap precisely, leaving an even single line between them. The line thickness of 2 Line is twice that of Line1. So when text set in Line1 is combined with text set in 2 Line half the size, the combined text will have exactly the same line thickness. For example:

ff massIVe 1 LIne - 60 PoInts ff massIVe 2 LIne - 30 PoInts

|SUPERSIZEDAdditional kerning is needed to make the connections exactly right, but words combined this way can be made into cool logos and headlines:

Time for some stacking. The different weights of FF Massive can be layered on top of each other. This way the outline and inner shapes can be given different colours, creating a distinctive effect. The FF Massive weights can be combined in three different ways:

COMBINATION 1: Top stacked on top of Base gives an even outline all around the characters.1 Top on top of 1 Base gives a thin outline: 2 Top on top of 2 Base gives a thicker outline:

STACK ‘EM UP!STACK ‘EM UP!COMBINATION 2: Top stacked on top of Solid gives lines above and below the characters.1 Top on top of 1 Solid gives a thin line: 2 Top on top of 2 Solid gives a thicker line:

stack ‘EM UP!STACK ‘EM UP!COMBINATION 3: Solid stacked on top of Base gives outlines right and left of the characters.1 Solid on 1 Base gives a thin line: 2 Solid on 2 Base gives a thicker line:

comBInatIon 1 - How to stack the Top weight on top of the Base weight.

Create a text box with a headline set in FF Massive 1 Base (here in yellow):

Duplicate the text box, change the type to FF Massive 1 Top, change the colour (in this case to blue):

Place both boxes exactly on top of each other, the end result looks like this:

The same can be done with FF Massive 2 Top on top of FF Massive 2 Base, giving a thicker outline:

comBInatIon 1 - Alternative stacking method

Create a text box, type a headline text and set it in FF Massive 1 Base (here in yellow):

STACK ‘EM UP!Copy the text to the next line, change the type to FF Massive 1 Top, change the colour (here to blue):

STACK ‘EM UP!Set the leading (line spacing) of the second line to 0 points, the end result looks like this:
