12 UNIVERSITY OF LEICESTER
Spotlight on a ResearcherSam Illingworth, Master Prize winner in 2008, is a PhD researcherin the department of Physics and Astronomy, studying thesources and sinks of carbon monoxide (CO) in the Earth’s loweratmosphere. The global distribution of CO in the atmosphere isof interest from several perspectives: as a primary and secondarydeterminant of air quality, as an indicator of how transportredistributes pollutants on a global scale, and as the leading sinkof hydroxyl (OH) radicals. OH is referred to as the ‘detergent’ ofthe atmosphere, as it destroys about 3.7Gt of greenhouse gaseseach year, making it the major oxidising chemical in theatmosphere. However, 75% of OH is lost through its reactionwith CO, which is why CO is often referred to as an indirectgreenhouse gas. Aircraft and ground observations are useful forlooking at CO on small spatial scales, but to obtain a completeglobal picture, satellite observations are needed to complementthese measurements. By using satellite data sets, we are able tobuild up an accurate and geographically complete picture ofhow CO is distributed throughout the atmosphere. This is aninvaluable tool for developing international protocols in orderto safeguard our planet’s future.
The University of Leicester’s Festival of Postgraduate Research develops research postgraduates’ ability tocommunicate research effectively to non-specialist audiences. The event engages employers and other externalorganisations, and helps to build the profile of PhDs.
The aims of the Festival are:

Julia Llewellyn Smith, FT
“Simon Singh achieves the impossible and makes mathsinteresting for the numerically challenged.”
Tim Teeman, The Times
“It is the ability of a writer like Simon Singh toilluminate, with panache, such hidden but vital corners oflife that has made popular science an indispensableaddition to literature. Such books are not textbooks, although they are highly educational; they have much ofthe verve of a novel, or at least a literary biography, andthey have brought science within the humanities, fulfilling Wordsworth’s ancient dream: ‘If the time shouldever come when what is now called science, thusfamiliarised to men, shall be ready to put on, as it were, aform of flesh and blood, the Poet will lend his divinespirit to aid the transfiguration, and will welcome theBeing thus produced, as a dear and genuine inmate ofthe household of man’.”
