POLICE BRIEFS Drinking and driving On March 2 at approximately 4:09 a.m., Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police of- ficers were patrolling Fergus. A 2001 Dodge was stopped on Kelsowood Lane and the driver showed signs of impairment by alcohol. He was arrested and brought to the Centre Welling- ton Operations Centre for test- ing. A 20-year-old Fergus man has been charged with impaired driving and over 80 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on March 18 to answer to the charge. Drug charge On March 1, at approximately 1:48 a.m. Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police offi- cers were patrolling Fergus and stopped a 2000 Chrysler on St. Andrew Street. Police spoke with the male driver and an odour of mari- juana was detected coming from the inside of the vehicle. Mari- juana was seized and the driver was arrested. A 19-year-old Centre Wel- lington Township man has been charged with possession of mar- ijuana contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal court on April 8 to an- swer to the charge. OPP investigate thefts from community mailboxes Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police received nu- merous reports in Centre Wel- lington Township and Guelph- Eramosa Township about Canada Post Community mail- boxes being forced open. The incidents occurred between the dates of Feb. 14 to Feb. 21. The Wellington County Street Crime Unit (SCU) took over the investigation and on Feb. 22. A Fergus male was arrested. Wellington County OPP would like to inform citizens that mail has been recovered from several residents’ mail- boxes. As the investigation is ongoing, officers are still sorting through the recovered property and processing evidence for a successful prosecution. At this time, investigators are working to identify the owners of the mail that has been recovered, and are in the process of notifying the rightful owners of the proper- ty. Officers will contact those people whose mail has been re- covered and make arrangements for it to be returned. We ask that people please be patient and if your mail has been recovered, you will be contacted in the near future. Anyone with information re- garding this crime, please con- tact Wellington County OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Public health is looking at the nutrition status of children in Wellington, Dufferin and Guelph who attend junior or senior kindergarten in the Upper Grand District School Board and Wellington Catholic District School Board. Public health is using a screen- ing tool called NutriSTEP which was developed and scientifically validated by researchers at the University of Guelph. The Min- istry of Health and Long-Term Care recommends the use of the NutriSTEP screening tool by public health units and health- care providers in Ontario. “Children experiencing poor nutrition are at risk for growth, behaviour and development prob- lems,” said Dr. Mercer, Medical Officer of Health for Wellington- Dufferin-Guelph Public Health. “By screening children at an early age, children can be re- ferred to appropriate health-care professionals and community programs.” Public Health urges parents of kindergarten students to com- plete the NutriSTEP question- naire when it comes home from school in March.
