James Jones & Sons Ltd, one of Scotland’s largest independent sawmillers and a leading supplier of British timber, have announced that a further 6 kilns have been purchased from manufacturer Mahild for their Steven’s Croft sawmill site at Lockerbie .

This investment establishes Lockerbie’s

kilning capacity as one of the largest in Europe, taking the total number of kilns to 16 and allowing the facility to process in excess of 160,000m³ annually.

The kilns are fitted with a heat recovery system which has already successfully reduced energy consumption within the existing Lockerbie facility. The new kilns

are expected to come on stream during October 2011 and reflect the increasing volumes being processed through the new saw-line at Lockerbie 3.

The entire kilning complex at Lockerbie is now being heated with hot water, which is provided by the neighbouring Eon biomass power plant, and conveyed via a pipeline installed in 2010. This

innovative investment saves an estimated 9,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, which would be produced if conventional heat sources were used, and further enhances the company’s sector-leading environmental credentials.

BSW Timber is launching a major campaign to encourage architects and the building industry to use more British C16 strength grade timber . The company is to join the 2011RIBA Roadshow tour and have hosted a series of 10 CPD seminars promoting the benefits of C16 at city venues throughout the UK .

BSW have invested heavily in the provision of machined C16 timber through the company’s Easi-Edge product. Multi-million pound investment in both planning and grading technology at BSW mills across the UK has dramatically increased the availability of the product.

Now BSW wants to encourage UK-wide use of a high quality product that the company believes has strong environmental credentials and can provide a major boost for the UK timber industry.

The campaign has been devised by BSW’s Marketing Manager, Eve Johnson. She explains: “We want to change the way the construction industry thinks about strength-graded timber. Typically, architects over specify in the mistaken belief that the higher European C24 grade is a superior product.

ConFor has been pursuing a two-pronged approach to the contentious issue of gangmaster licensing in forestry . Now, it is confirmed that ConFor’s chief executive, Stuart Goodall, will participate in the steering group for the forthcoming Gangmasters Licensing Authority pilot on forestry .

following several industry meetings with the GLA and Defra, where the case for forestry to be exempt or costs significantly reduced were made, the

GLA offered to run a pilot ‘lighter touch’ inspection process for forestry.

Darryl Dixon, GLA Director of strategy, said, “We are working up how ‘lighter touch’ inspection processes might operate. This includes the need to consider what other information we might ask for, which the industry would not see as burdensome, and which would also assist the GLA in making risk decisions when considering whether to issue licences, and to what extent

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has announced an extension to the deadline for registration for its London and Sheffield Forgotten Spaces 2011 ideas competition . The new registration deadline is 13th April with final submissions required by 12th May .

Open to entrants across the country and with cash prizes of up to £5,000, the competitions asks artists, architects, planners, engineers, landscape designers, students and local groups

to suggest designs and proposals for an imaginative new use for a ‘forgotten space’ anywhere in Greater London and the Sheffield City region. The RIBA in London also confirmed a new partnership with Design for London on the competition. The design body joins Qatari Diar and Ordnance Survey as sponsors in the Capital.

Mark Brearley- Head of Design for London said, ‘This is a great project for London and we are thrilled to be a part of it. We look forward to seeing a range of ideas

in particularly innovative proposals for the edge of London.’

The RIBA in Yorkshire is working in association with Sheffield Hallam University and the Sheffield competition is being sponsored by developers British Land, Creative Sheffield, Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and engineers Buro Happold. Media partner on forgotten Spaces 2011 is The Architects Journal.

Registration and details of the

brief for forgotten Spaces 2011 is available at: www.architecture.com/forgottenspaceslondon and

www .architecture .com/forgottenspacessheffield The RIBA will announce competition winners and award cash prizes for both competitions in autumn this year with exhibitions to follow at Somerset House, London and the Crucible Sheffield first prize will receive £5,000, second prize £2,000 and third prize £1,000

and in what circumstances inspections are required or can be adapted.

Stuart Goodall cautiously welcomed the initiative, saying, “The GLA is responding to the concerns we have expressed about what we see as the

unnecessary inclusion of forestry in gangmaster licensing given the limited evidence of inappropriate gangmaster activity in the sector. While this move is welcomed, Confor will continue to press for effective exclusion, including through the forestry regulation task force, recently announced by the minister Jim Paice, in response to a request from Confor. So far I have not seen any need for forestry to be included in the GLA’s remit. I believe it is disproportionate regulation, which this government has stated it wishes to address.”

A £1m investment in state of the art plant at Hozelock’s 33,400 sq m Midpoint Park factory in Birmingham will enable the market-leading garden watering equipment manufacturer to achieve record delivery times for its premium hose systems, including the new 30m and 40m AutoReels with automatic hose rewind .

The new wall-mounted AutoReel models require the largest moulded casings ever made by the company, and a new 87 ton Demag Systec 1300T injection moulding machine affords an enhanced production capability of over 1800 of these components per 24 hour cycle.

Unveiled recently to visiting delegates from the Horticultural Trades Association Contact 2011 conference, the imposing Demag Systec 1300T is the size of a double decker bus (14.3m long, 3.7m wide and 2.9m high) with a shot weight of up to 5,220grms and a linked ATM ES3000 HS robot capable of lifting 40kgs.

Total Great British construction output volume in 2011 is forecast to be down by 2 .3% on 2010, according to the construction research specialists Leading Edge . The fall is mainly a result of a reduction in output in the public sectors as the government cuts start to bite .

However, on the positive side, the 2011 forecast of £98,400m is 3.9% higher than 2009 at constant prices and higher than 10 of the 15 preceding years. It has increased slightly compared to the

forecast made in 2010, partly due to an improvement in many of the leading indicators in the private sector.

Leading Edge forecast that all the private sectors including housing, commercial, industrial and infrastructure will see real output growth during 2011. In particular the private housing sector will see the highest growth rate this year, while output in the commercial sector will be encouraging, despite many of the projects associated with the Olympics coming to an end.

Mel Budd, Managing Director at Leading Edge commented, “Although we expect the economy to maintain its slow but steady growth in 2011, the construction sector will suffer from a double dip recession due to the deep cuts in the public sector’s capital spending. Overall, we forecast a decline in output volume in 2011 followed by slow growth for the construction industry as a whole from 2013 onwards. Total output in 2015 will be around 3.5% higher than 2010.”

Anna Liu of Tonkin Liu said: “We are thrilled to be working in Burnley and collaborating with Mike Smith Studio again, with the same spirit of boldness,

adventure, and pursuit of quality that drew us to the hilltop in Burnley seven years ago.”

“We were inspired by how the viaduct frames the view of the surrounding landscape, which I think is one of the best things about Burnley. When we visited Burnley to develop this project, we met with students from the College and UCLan campus to hear their views on their town and what they thought would best reflect the spirit of Burnley.

industry update

1 in 2 companies in the UK Fencing industry are making a loss according to new research from market analysts Plimsoll . Many in the market are finding it difficult to pass on the pain of cost inflation to their customers as competitive pressure is restricting their pricing power .

Lead analyst and author of the new Plimsoll Analysis has explained the growing problem in the market, “Whether its fuel, materials or wage demands every company in the UK fencing industry is being squeezed by ever increasing costs. 57% of companies have seen their gross margin fall in the latest year. Unfortunately, many are reluctant to pass on price rises for fear of losing customers to cost savvy competitors. However, falling profit margins across the industry is the first warning sign that this strategy has become unsustainable”.

Pattison continues, “Over the past 2 years the average profit margin in the UK fencing industry has fallen to 3%. More worryingly, 347 companies are

The new Plimsoll Analysis – fencing will tell you instantly which companies are prospering in the post-recession market place, those set to be bought out and those heading for trouble – across the whole of the market and in the individual regions. It gives an instant performance rating on 748 companies and highlights those ripe for acquisition. of these companies will simply run out of cash”.

Advice on automated gate systems

The automated gate industry has seen an impact on products since the recent tragic events involving automated security systems and gates . One key factor that has certainly become apparent to smaller reputable installers has been the need to comply with safety legislation and the difficulties surrounding the compliance for a smaller installer .

Current legislation is difficult to meet for the larger UK Automated Gate manufacturers. Significant resources are available to the larger companies including test facilities to ensure their products comply. It has become increasingly difficult for the smaller company to meet and provide compliant automatic gates. Testing programmes, risk assessed designs, approved rigorous testing procedures and external safety consultants can only increase the overheads of an independent installer.

Regardless of the size of any business, it’s important to consider the implications involved in supplying or installing automatic

gate systems. The choice of automatic gate system will be crucial to the success of any business in the future.

Most installers have traditionally used imported gate drive systems, manufactured from outside of the UK market. The moving machinery directive has been developed to suit the needs of the UK work place, and most imported drive systems even those manufactured within the EU community may be unable to comply with many of the requirements.

One way for an independent installer to take advantage of the larger UK based manufacturer’s advanced technology and facilities would be to build relationships with the larger UK production companies. Product branding can offer significant benefit to installers, automatic gates that are suitable for re-branding into other companies business model still have the support and advantages made available to the larger manufacturer but can be customised by name to suit another installer.

What does the FUtURe hold FoR the aUtomated Gate IndUstRY? dan lee RePoRts

One key area which offers a direct comparison is the drive system technology used; most of the leading UK Automatic Gate companies use their own customised and UK manufactured drive and control systems. The reason for this is usually to provide increased reliability and compliance with safety directives as well as having an approved testing procedure to maintain compliance and provide documentary evidence and records to support the product.

Paramount Steelfence, one of the leading automated gate providers within the UK market sector has seen a rapid growth of enquiries from other reputable but smaller installers looking to enhance their product range. Many reputable installers would like to ensure compliance for their customers, but may not know

where to start.

With over 25 years of experience in industrial and commercial automatic gates, Paramount Steelfence combined with fencing News will continue to discuss some of the challenges the industry will be facing in future issues.

health & safety

A survey of automated gates in the UK has revealed that despite the tragic deaths of two children last year in separate automated gate accidents, there is a substantial risk of history repeating itself given the number of ‘unsafe’ gates which remain in service .

The survey was conducted by Gate Safe, spearheaded by Jacksons fencing and supported by RoSPA and the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. It shows that a massive 88% of the gates surveyed failed to comply with current HSE guidelines in relation to the inclusion of recommended features and procedures designed to reduce the risk of injury. Combine this fact with the worrying statistic that 51% of respondents advised that the general public and children are likely to use or play by their gate and the chance of another accident occurring becomes an alarming possibility.

The survey also showed that:

• 65% of respondents claim pedestrians are expected to use the gate as a means of access, yet only 47% provide the recommended alternative segregated pedestrian access

• 53% of respondents said that they could not stop the gate manually when it was closing, so in the event of an emergency the gate could not be manually stopped

• 59% of respondents advised that their gates were not fitted with the recommended safety edges

• 35% of respondents admitted to not having a regular service agreement

in place to ensure the on-going safety of the automatic gate

Commenting on the survey, Gate Safe Steering Group chairperson, Richard Jackson said, “these findings indicate that a worryingly high level of risk exists of yet another automated gate accident, or even worse, fatality occurring. In particular, we are concerned that such a high proportion of respondents have failed to act on the advice given by the HSE and backed by our campaign, demonstrating that more needs to be done to improve the communication of key automated gate safety messages.”

“Also it is alarming to note that so many gate installations are not regularly

serviced, meaning that even if gate safety features exist, there is a chance that they will not be fully operational. The Gate Safe campaign is pushing for improved standards in gate automation and will continue to strive to educate and raise awareness amongst anybody and everybody involved in the installation / life span of an automated gate.”

“The HSE has commended our campaign which is unique in that it represents, for the first time, a concerted programme of activity which targets representatives from a cross section of companies / organisations, with the aim of initiating a unique 3600 awareness / education programme which targets not just the installer but everyone including the specifier,

manufacturer, constructor / contractor and ultimately the installer involved in an automatic gate installation.”

Richard concludes, “We are currently in the process of finalising a CPD module for architects which focuses on the key factors affecting automated gate safety and we hope to roll this out this year with RIBA’s. We then plan to use this CPD as the basis for an education tool for other industry sectors involved in the automated gate industry.”

The way that their fencing is manufactured with a centreless roll means that the fencing will roll out quicker and more easily than other material, without snagging or trying to wind back up again. This will save time, effort and often the most important - the skin on your knuckles whilst erecting.

By correctly tensioning the wire as it goes into the machine the fencing will come out correctly tensioned as a fence. This will mean less bagginess when erecting meaning a tighter, more durable fence. The deep crimp that is put into the horizontal wires will also help with speedy erection. It will also allow for climatic elasticity; the fence should be as straight on a cold winters day as the middle of summer.

The 2Life Zinc/Aluminium coating used on the wire means that ArcelorMittal Sheffield are the only manufacturer to guarantee that their fencing will last twice as long as fencing made from wire galvanised to BS EN 10244-2 Class A. It is this special coated wire that is supplied from their parent company; part of ArcelorMittal which is the largest steel company in the world. As part of their commitment to the quality of the fence, all of the Estate 2Life HT fencing is supplied with 4Life wire on the top and bottom wires. It is these wires that bear the brunt of the weather and so are likely to corrode at the fastest rate. All of this is at no extra cost to the end user.

TIMBER MERCHANTS & SAWMILLS • ESTABLISHED 1876

and wish him continued success for the future

Over the last few years the issue of timber treatment has been widely debated within the media and has been a hot topic of conversation for industry insiders, each with their own view on what should and shouldn’t be happening .

Henry Perry of Henry Perry fencing is no exception. Many of his opinions on treatments (both new and old) are echoed across the board and are only validated by the fact that he has been in the business for almost forty years.

He tells us, “It is a very frustrating issue simply because it seems as though we’re going backwards rather than forwards. I have worked in this industry for many years and I am more than happy to consider modern techniques providing they move things on in a positive way. What I’m finding now is that a lot the techniques being encouraged are only there to remove the skill out of the process.”

His background is in agriculture but after the two farmers he was working for decided to retire, Henry was left with an occupational space to fill and the timing, although unfortunate, was perfect.

He explains, “When I first started I combined agricultural contract work with a bit of fencing here and there. During the summer of 1976 though England experienced its hottest summer on record, causing straw fires and leaving miles upon miles of hedge rows completely burnt out.”

from the devastation Henry and his small team were able to secure an awful lot of fence erecting work, so much so that their need for agricultural contracting work almost entirely diminished.

Henry Perry

Now into its fourth decade of trading Henry Perry fencing has found the winning formula. Henry, along with long-term employee Nick Procter and new appointment John Downing are bringing in more sales, and erecting more fences now then ever before.

“We’ll always do a good job at a fair price. That’s our principal. I don’t care who I’m working for they’ll get priced the same as the next.”

One of the most substantial developments with the issue of treated timber came towards the end of 2004 when the European Union decided that because of health and safety risks and environmental concerns, the use of the Copper Chrome Arsenate (CCA) preservative needed to be banned.

Henry started his career working as an agricultural contractor in 1973.

“When CCA usage was stopped we were given this new and supposedly better treatment, which in my opinion doesn’t work as well. They altered usage amounts on health and safety grounds, but as far as I’m aware, I’ve never heard of or seen anyone who has been affected by it. If there’s no evidence that there is a problem why do they change it? I think that if we as an industry want to have our voices heard we ought to be making more noise.”

Since the CCA ban was enforced fencers across the country have been inundated with problems, with many of them having to replace or redo work that is falling short of the usual high standards.

“To give you a good example, I recently went to price up a job where 279 rotten stakes needed replacing. Not only is this problematic for us as tradesman, but the negative effect it’s having on the environment is massive! If you think about it in order to sort out these problems someone has to first

cut the stakes meaning we’re felling more timber, and then transport it from place to place which of course uses more diesel.”

“We are now looking at stocking some HC4 Classification stakes that basically exclude the spruce, and only use pine. These are guarantee for 16 years, but when the CCA treatment did the same (excluded the spruce) a 40 year guarantee called a dot1 standard (department of transport) was given. So it does seem as though we aren’t really progressing.”

In Henry’s view, the problems with new preservatives occur more often in round stakes than in sawn timber and he credits this to the way the wood splits when in the ground.

“The chrome is effectively a fixing agent that holds the copper in. Now without it, when the timber splits water seeps in the preservative quickly leaks out.”

When asked if this was a cause for concern Henry quickly answered, “Yes in my view it is. I’ve always been loyal to buy British but it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find good quality fencing stakes that are produced in Britain. We buy ours now from Westbank Timber and even though they are imported, they’re great because the chrome is left in tact!”

The ongoing debate on whether creosote should be banned is another regulation Henry is weary of; “Creosote is a damn good preservative, there’s absolutely nothing wrong, but the slightest hint that something could be wrong and that’s it, it’s banned.”

As you can probably tell Henry Perry is certainly a man in the know. His experience and understanding of our

industry means any critique he has on the issue is completely justifiable.

Henry Perry fencing is now in a position where it can offer it’s customers the very best timber fencing, steel security systems, ornamental railings, electric gates and hand-made garden pergolas, to name but a few. In fact if it’s fencing-related, chances are Henry and his team can do it.

By taking on work in both the commercial and domestic market Henry’s business options are limitless.

“To me it’s important that we explore each market because I personally enjoy the variety. At the minute I can’t keep up with the amount of work we get and that comes as a result of the range of things we’ll do and of course our reputation. I think there’s too many business who want to run before than can walk these days, for me above all else it’s always been about building a reputation.”

Henry Perry is living proof that knowledge and hard work go along way. His feelings on this issue of Timber Treatment are so strong that he plans to write to the Environmental Minister and have his voice heard.

We encourage you to do the same.

landscaping

The landscaping division of Cumbria-based stone engineers, Burlington, has played its part in helping landscape specialists, UPM Tilhill receive the highest accolade possible at the annual BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries) awards .

Presented with the Principal Award within BALI’s Land Renewal and Regeneration Scheme category for the regeneration of The Waterfront in Barrow-in-furness Cumbria, experts from UPM Tilhill’s Kirkby Lonsdale office used a number of Burlington’s natural stone landscaping products across both phases 1 & 2.

Involving an unused former industrial area spread across 80 hectares, The Waterfront Project saw the UPM Tilhill team, working for principal contractor Carillion, commissioned to landscape much of the open space while making sure the habitat of protected wildlife species was preserved.

In delivering the overall scheme, Burlington’s Westmorland Green random rubble walling stone was used to not only provide sheltered outdoor seating areas but to be attractive features in their own right. Additionally, Burlington supplied paving and honed copings in the same stone, together with a significant quantity of decorative aggregate 15-30mm slate mulch.

Commenting on behalf of Burlington Stone, Landscapes Manager, John Atkinson said: “Having only recently

been accepted as members of BALI, we are understandably delighted that our landscaping materials have gone some way in helping UPM Tilhill secure such a revered industry accolade. The Waterfront is a stunning landscape achievement in its own right and it is rewarding to have worked with both UPM Tilhill at Kirkby Lonsdale and the project team from Carillion.”

Whilst a major achievement of the project was the relocation of the formerly scattered allotments into a modern, purpose built area with better facilities and security, the project team also had to landscape a business park area and provide a high-quality working environment with attractive public areas and distinctive gateway fencing linking green areas.

Special consideration also had to be given to establishing new vegetation on the exposed coastal location. Sand and wind-tolerant tree and shrub species were carefully chosen and a temporary shelter was provided by putting up fences and windbreak netting screens.

The BALI Awards (British Association of Landscape Industries) are held annually to recognise members who have demonstrated exceptionally high standards of professionalism and skill in landscaping.

Heavy duty TruClose® ‘Multi-Adjust’ gate hinges are unlike other self-closing gate hinges . The hinges’ inventor D&D Technologies Pty Ltd, bills them as “the world’s most adjustable gate hinges” .

When D&D Technologies invented the hinge back in 2006 it set out to create a hinge ideal for wood and vinyl gates, because it is these gate materials that suffer the most distortion, sagging and misalignment. It was also for this reason they made the hinges capable of carrying gate loads of up to 320kg (700lb).

The TruClose ‘Multi-Adjust’ offers three-way adjustment: vertical, horizontal and tension (self closing). It is made from super strong engineering polymer materials that never rust, bind, sag or stain. The Multi-Adjust offers up to 19mm (3/4”) of both vertical and horizontal adjustment via specially moulded slots within the hinge leaves.

The patented internal tension adjustment occurs by way of a regular slot-head screwdriver and the internal, stainless steel torsion spring.

According to D&D, this high degree of adjustment makes the hinges highly convenient and reliable. Both the original installer and the property owner can readily adjust the hinges at any time, ensuring ongoing performance and smooth closure.

Each MultiAdjust™ hinge features two

wrap-around mounting brackets (90˚ double face-fixed), one that fits to the gate frame and another to the fence post. Stainless steel studs within these brackets allow a lone installer to lift a heavy gate into position and secure it with ease using the supplied dome nuts.

Like all of D&D’s TruClose gate hinges, the Multi-Adjust polymer materials are self lubricating and UV stabilised, adding an extra dimension of dependable gate closure. And like all of D&D’s products, TruClose® Safety Gate Hinges are backed by a Lifetime Warranty.

An expert group set up to look at the future of forestry is a ‘fantastic opportunity’ to fulfil the enormous potential of all of England’s woodland .

That is the view of Stuart Goodall, Chief Executive of Confor, who has been named as a member of the independent panel, Chaired by James Jones, the Bishop of Liverpool and established to advise government on forestry and woodland policy.

“The group represents a fantastic opportunity to realise the enormous potential of forestry,” said Stuart. forestry is unique: the more economic activity, the greater environmental benefit, and the more investment that goes towards improving public benefits, such as, access and biodiversity. I will be stressing that economic viability underpins wider sustainability.”

Around 110,000 green jobs are supported by forestry in England and the sector adds £4 billion per year in added value to the economy. Yet despite England’s rich forest heritage, its woodland cover is among the lowest in Europe at just eight per cent.

“Increased planting and investment in forestry are vital for the sector and can lead to a huge range of benefits,” said Stuart. “There are major economic benefits associated with England’s forestry businesses. Many of them are small, family-run enterprises, which employ people in secure, full-time jobs in rural areas with few other large employers.”

Stuart continued: “Investment can also help to satisfy the enormous public appetite to enjoy our forests for a wide range of pursuits including dog-walking, mountain-biking, bird-watching, hiking and horse-riding. That all needs to be paid for and sustainable timber

sales provide the biggest financial contribution.”

“The priority has to be tackling the huge areas of woodland that are currently not managed: around 500,000 hectares,” added Stuart. “Such forests provide little or no benefit in terms of access, biodiversity or employment. These forests need to be managed sustainably, to everyone’s benefit.”

“Given the public backlash, sales of the state forest are clearly off the agenda and, therefore, it is time to look forward and tackle the big challenges and opportunities facing all English forests,” he said.

Stuart concluded: “Sustainable forest management, by definition, ticks all the boxes, but some resources have to be provided. If we can have a mature, informed debate about financing forestry, the results can benefit everyone. Everyone loves England’s woodlands so let’s take the opportunity offered by this expert panel to make our forests even better.”

A unique type of mobile fencing has been used for the first time in the UK as part of a large-scale police security operation .

Publifor, made by Betafence, was used to create a 400 meter “ring of steel” around Sheffield City Hall when it hosted the recent Liberal Democratic Party Spring Conference.

The fence was installed as part of the South Yorkshire Police operation to manage thousands of protestors demonstrating against government policy.

Kevin Steers, Betafence UK General Manager, said: “Publifor has shown itself to be an ideal choice in a high profile, high security situation. Aesthetically, it fits in with any urban area. Its design, strength and weight help effective control of large crowds and it’s quick and easy to install and take down.”

on foot or in a vehicle. The fencing system has previously been used outside the European Parliament in Strasbourg and at the G8 summit in L’Aquila, Italy, in July 2009. It is also currently installed at sporting arenas including the Olympic Stadium in Rome and the San Siro in Milan.

Publifor combines a steel base unit and uses Securifor welded mesh, which combines an anti-climb/anti-cut mesh aperture of 12.7mm x 76.2mm, eliminating ‘pass through’,

with minimum weld strength of 75% of the ultimate tensile strength of the steel. Its construction offers excellent visibility for CCTV and security surveillance.

Publifor is available in a number of coating options and has high visibility gates for vehicle and pedestrian access to provide safe and secure access points and prevent unauthorised intrusion. Publifor is suitable for most types of ground and gradients. It is pre-assembled and delivered to site as a complete modular unit so it

can be rapidly installed and removed with a forklift.

Publifor has been designed and patented by the Betafence Group, one of the market- leading fencing manufacturers. At present, Publifor is made by Betafence at its factory in Italy but in future it may also be manufactured in the UK at the Betafence site on Shepcote Lane, Sheffield.

Since 2004 Frontier Pitts has been impact testing different Road Blockers in order to suit the requirements of each of their individual clients .

In 2004 the Terra Blocker was impact tested in accordance with the American Department of State K12 standard. Since this time the company’s research and development department has continued this testing program, under the BSi PAS 68 specification at various speeds and with different types of vehicles.

frontier Pitts has seen a further 8 successful impact tests on Terra Blockers alone, with changes in factors such as vehicle, speed and foundation depth all being analysed. They then introduced the Terra Shallow Blocker and Terra Mount Blockers from the BSi PAS 68 tests focusing on limited foundations, which are ideal for inner city sites.

As lessons have been learned, Architects have identified that designing the landscape around the buildings to slow possible VBIED (Vehicle Born

Improvised Explosive Device) is critical to ensure vehicles are not able to attain the speeds that equate to a high energy level. As this has become more and more common, frontier Pitts’ clients required a blocker that would stop a lower energy levels.

In 2010 frontier Pitts took the initiative to impact test the standard range of roadblocker to the PAS 68 standard, as clients required a lower energy roadblocker which would halt a 7500kg vehicle travelling at 30mph. This same blocker has since been impact tested with 7500kg @ 50mph, with remarkable results.

As treater members of the Wood Protection Association (WPA), Calders & Grandidge are delighted to be part of the steering committee formulating the WPA Treated Wood Quality Scheme to enhance the credentials and expectations surrounding pressure treated timber .

following numerous well publicised cases of poor or inadequately treated timber the WPA, encouraged by some of the leading treaters in the UK, decided the time had come to introduce a quality scheme similar to those operating in other major wood treating markets like North America and the Nordic countries. At the WPA’s AGM on 17 March, the Association’s Director, Steve Young, described the new scheme as: “setting a benchmark to reinforce treatment standards and enable buyers to identify treaters that operate in line with a verifiable quality scheme.” Ian Chalmers of Calders & Grandidge believes that the introduction of the WPA Quality Scheme will enable reputable suppliers to differentiate themselves and their products consistently and that will appeal to buyers looking for reassurance that they have bought materials that are fit for purpose. He told fencing News that: “It will enhance the credentials of those companies that ‘do it right’, but it also gives the end customer the comfort of knowing that their timber has not merely been treated, but has been treated to prescribed quality standards and procedures for specific end uses (hazard classes).

Treating wet spruce for example, may be a good way to get the price down, but at the end of the day, the treatment retained does precious little to offer enhanced life expectancy over an untreated counterpart. The quality scheme will be introduced this year, and more information on this will be

available from WPA shortly.

Whilst on matters WPA, at their AGM, an update on the current creosote situation was given. In broad terms, the situation has not moved from that reported in the previous edition of fencing News, except that a fully detailed socio economic argument supporting creosote has been compiled by the WPA – with input from the key stakeholders like major suppliers and users. This data has been submitted to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) who requested that the work be carried out to support the arguments for retaining creosote.. The HSE recognise the adverse social, economic and financial consequences should creosote no longer be permitted for use as a wood preservative, and as the UK’s competent authority representing us in Europe, the HSE and WPA is keen to keep Europe’s decision makers fully briefed.

Currently the decision on whether to permit continued use of creosote now rests with the European Commission and a 2 month review period commenced in february. If the Commission cannot reach agreement then the matter is forwarded to the European Parliament (for a further 2 month period) for them to consider. Commenting on this process, Ian Chalmers said: “Whilst we do not have a crystal ball, the perceived likely outcome as at today is that creosote will remain approved for use for at least 5 years, with continued approval thereafter dependent on a review of research on potential alternatives”.

timber treatment

Last month The Deep in Hull was selected as the perfect setting for the WJ Components Conference, the scenic surroundings and fresh sea breeze enticed trade experts to meet, greet and above all else, discuss the need for fire retardant solutions within the timber industry .

WJ Components used this platform as an opportunity to introduce Wolman’s Wolmanit firestop treatment to the UK which was launched this year exclusively to WJ Components. Wolman representatives along with WJ Components presented its benefits and explained exactly how it works.

As well as developing a successful working relationship with Wolman (a BASf group) WJ Components recently celebrated achieving ISO 9001 accreditation and Highway Sector Scheme Approval, giving them even more reasons to celebrate!

Speaking at the conference National Account Manager Peter fitzsimons, for Wolman had only good things to say about Mark Eggleston, WJ Components’ Managing Director; “It has been a pleasure to be associated with Mark for three years and an

absolutely joy to support him”

After Peter gave the initial presentation on Wolman, he handed over the microphone to colleague Dr. Alexander Lorenz who gave more information on how fire protection procedures should be executed when working with timber and Plywood.

He insisted that as a building material timber had a number of advantageous qualities and that it should be discredited because of fire-related concerns; “Timber is a natural, renewable and outstanding material. It is aesthetically pleasing and combines high bending strength with low weight. Timber is flexible and can control heat, moisture and noise emissions, making it the ideal material for our industry.”

Alex went to say that timber’s only disadvantage is its “sensitivity to fire”, but was hopeful that this problem could be avoided; “It is possible to improve this situation using various methods of protection. One solution would be to encase wood structures with fire-proof materials (such as plasterboard), another would be to invest in coating systems, but perhaps

the most efficient and effective way would be to treat the timber with a fire retardant product.”

“The treatment isn’t subject to hazard labelling and it complies with all necessary requirements,” continued Alex. “It is also appealing because of the way it maintains the natural appearance of the wood and because it prevents the accumulation of salt on its surface.”

Wolmanit firestop is highly effective and proven to improve fire retardant performance and is especially developed for the vacuum high pressure treatment of timer and plywood. The firestop gives architects a wider choice in the fire-related timber applications.

As a fire retardant product the firestop improves the performance of timber and plywood when exposed to fire. Wolmanit firestop treated timbers will comply with all relevant international fire standards (e.g. EN13501-1: class B s2 d0), thus giving architects a wide choice in fire-related timber applications.

Timber treated with firestop is suitable for interior and exterior applications

and the most typical uses include internal wall and ceiling linings, external claddings, roof constructions, transportation, wooden scaffolding and pallets for the chemical industry. It controls ignition of fire, impedes flame spread across the wood surface and lowers the heat release from the wood-based substrate.

Peter fitzsimons concludes, “A key advantage is that it doesn’t require major modification to conventional high-pressure treatment plants. It’s a straightforward process to operate, with no heating of treatment tanks or special curing considerations. That also results in clean-looking timber.”

Overall the conference was a real success, it enlightened people to the ways in which this revolutionary treatment differs from the norm. We wish WJ Components all the success in the future and hope the partnership with Wolman continues to grow.

timber treatment

Arch Timber Protection has upgraded its automated control system for timber treatment operations to Auto-Treater . Already managing and controlling over 60 treatment plants in the UK and Europe, Auto-Treater provides users with a proven software system that combines automation of the treatment process with business management information to give advanced control and optimisation .

Ed Webster, Engineering and Technical Services Manager of Arch explains: “We are constantly listening to feedback from our customers and this has helped us evolve these latest focused innovations to the Auto-Treater software and ensure we have a market leading system.”

“for instance, Auto-Treater is now built on the very latest PLC (programmable logic controller) & SCADA systems (supervisory control and data acquisition) ensuring product longevity and helping to future proof our customers’ treatment operations. The system ergonomics have been further improved to increase operator efficiency and additional fault finding tools provide operators with greater self-help capabilities to diagnose plant faults, minimising any down time.”

“The fully integrated solution strength control system, with the facility to log confirmatory lab results within the database, will help remove the need for separate data logging for quality assurance purposes. And a new auto mix function following the completion of a charge is available helping maximise plant throughput by minimising charge turnaround times. The latest generation of Auto-Treater is also now equipped with an advanced retention calculation structure to further improve treatment control and help provide compliance to BS8417 – Preservation of Wood – Code of Practice. In addition to this improved functionality, we have also enhanced the list of reports that are available directly from the system to help customers manage their business”

“But we’re not stopping there. The system is now being further developed to provide a fully integrated European version, incorporating multi-language options and required European treatment standards.”

Bond Timber is one of the latest companies to benefit from the installation of Auto-Treater.

Shaun Getson, Manager of Bond Timber explained, “As one of the largest timber treatment operations in Cornwall and Devon we are always searching for greater efficiency from our treatment plants. With the assistance of Arch and the introduction of Auto -Treater we now have a superb system that is extremely operator friendly and also provides us with detailed and valuable management reporting information. Recording of data is much improved and the automated mixing facility means that treatment operator exposure or error is much reduced. Over the years we have developed a great relationship with Arch built on their customer service, industry knowledge, record on innovation and the assurance of the back up support of the Arch engineering and technical team for all aspects of treatment control, maintenance and treatment quality.”

aUto-tReateR - the latest evolUtIon

Arch is currently busy incorporating Auto-Treater into several new treatment plants for customers and also upgrading existing customer treatment operations. A new brochure highlighting these latest Auto-Treater developments is now available but to see the full range of benefits the system can offer, Arch has a fully functional demonstration system enabling Auto-Treater to be brought direct to the customer’s site so it can be seen first-hand.

timber treatment

The mis-selling of non-compliant treated timber for ground contact fencing and landscaping projects is threatening to undermine the entire industry, says leading timber specialist M&M Timber Limited .

Members of both the UK Professional foresters Association and the Wood Protection Association, the Midlands based timber products company is a long time campaigner for the correct application of sustainable Class 4 timber treatments and shares the concerns of other major timber suppliers who continue to see end users being sold timber for ground contact use that is not fit for purpose.

Since Copper Chromated Arsenate (CCA) treatments were banned six years ago, many responsible timber suppliers invested in alternative processes in line with BS 8417 USE Classes. To meet USE Class 4 requirements, M&M Timber was amongst the first in the UK to market the ground breaking Osmose MicroPro pressure treatment process, which is guaranteed to extend the

service life of fencing and landscaping timbers for up to 15 years.

Discerning contractors and landscapers are expressing a requirement for a longer lasting solution for ground contact timbers where high costs of labour can have an economic impact on land management overheads.

“Many suppliers are still selling low cost, generically treated timber for ground contact fencing that is quite simply going to end up costing the customer dearly after only a short time in service,” says M&M Timber’s Managing Director Nigel Poyner. “Understandably, in the current economic climate, everyone is looking to cut their overheads in any way they can. But we all have a responsibility to educate customers on the long term advantages of specifying only USE Class 4 treated timbers for ground contact applications. Our price quotation policy always makes it clear what options are recommended for specific in-service uses.”

Two years ago M&M Timber invested in an advanced drying kiln at its 22 acre

site at Clows Top, near Kidderminster. The company plans to install a second kiln early next year to help meet increasing demand for its micronized treated timber products.

The selection of permeable timber species and the kiln drying process is an essential part of the quality process, the MicroPro preservative which utilises sub-micron copper particles vastly improve corrosion protection of metal fasteners and fixings and provide a robust ground contact protection by penetrating the vulnerable sapwood against decay and

insect attack. The Class 4 certified micronized Timber also complies with Greenguard Children & Schools Certification that indicates the product has undergone rigorous testing and has met stringent standards for low volatile organic compound emissions.

M&M Timber’s warranty is underwritten by the leading American wood preservatives specialist Osmose, who carry out a quality audit every month.

A new website to improve the accessibility of research findings for the UK’s forestry and timber sector is now live .

A meeting hosted by The Scottish forestry Trust in 2008, between researchers and the wider forestry industry, highlighted the ability to access research findings as an important issue that needed to be addressed. As a result, a partnership of public and private sector organisations worked together to develop an improved service to facilitate better communication, collaboration and dissemination of research.

The research outputs from UK’s forestry and timber sector are generated by a number of universities, commercial research bodies, forest Research and the wider public sector. These research

findings cover the whole wood supply chain and often contain significant findings that the wider industry needs to be able to access and act upon.

Director of the Scottish forestry Trust, Bob Stubbs said, “Many of these important outputs are not easily accessible to those that need the information. So, during 2010, a number of organisations worked together to develop a user-friendly web portal to improve access to forestry and timber research information and we are now pleased to launch www.woodinfo.co.uk.”

Feedback on woodinfo .co .uk is actively encouraged; comments should go directly to Dan Ridley-Ellis at d .ridleyellis@napier .ac .uk

WoodInFo.co.Uk laUnches

The UK Forest Products Association (UKFPA) has described the decision by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to exclude UKFPA, the legitimate voice of the wood processing industry, from membership of its new Advisory Panel which is to consider the future of forestry and woodland policy in England and on the role of the Forestry Commission in implementing policy as “an insult to industry .”

The new panel, which is to be chaired by the Bishop of Liverpool, will report to Caroline Spelman MP, the Secretary of State DEfRA in the autumn.

Tony Mitchell, UKfPA President said “We understand that UKfPA had been nominated for membership of the new panel and was ready and willing to play its part. However, the news that we have been denied this opportunity is hugely disappointing and very worrying; it is another slap in the face for the industry by the Government.”

“This news is an insult to the forest products sector in England; how can a panel be expected to produce meaningful recommendations for the Minister if one very vital element of the sector is not at the table? The last thing we want is more ill-informed comment from an unrepresentative body. Having made such a mess of the proposals to change the ownership and management of the public forest estate in England you might expect the Government to seek guidance from those who really know what they are talking about. If the membership of the Panel remains unrepresentative of the forestry and forest products sector in England, how can its recommendation be

given any credibility and be taken seriously?”

David Sulman, Executive Director of UKfPA, added, “This is very bad news; it is essential that the new Advisory Panel is truly representative of the forestry and forest products sector in England; but at present it clearly is not. It is disgraceful that Government should again choose to ignore the interests of the wood processing sector. Only last week we saw the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) disregard industry concerns about the impact on the sector of the Renewable Heat Incentive and now DEfRA has ignored industry’s opinions - this is simply not good enough. What use will any recommendations from this Advisory Panel be if it is not representative of the entire sector?”

“It seems that the Government still has not learnt the lessons from its ill-fated plans to dispose of the public forest estate in England, which resulted in public uproar. It should not be forgotten that the Panel will also provide recommendations on the plan to sell-off 40,000 hectares of the forestry Commission estate in England, which was announced following the 2010 Comprehensive Spending Review, but was put on hold last month amidst the furore surrounding the proposals to sell-off the public forest estate in England. We, and our Members, are already making our views known across the political spectrum and hope that there will be a positive outcome for the sake of our industry.”

Scottish timber traders met in Stirling recently to learn more about the new Illegal Timber Regulation, its implications for the trade and environmental due diligence systems .

The workshop featured informative presentations from Rachel Butler, the TTf’s Head of Sustainability and Jon Buckrell from Chatham House, which is responsible for outreach work on the subject on behalf of the Department for Environment, food and Rural Affairs (DEfRA). Russell Paterson of Paterson Timber Ltd presented a case study which described how his Company is addressing the issue.

The audience, which comprised members of the Scottish Timber Trade Association and supporters of the Scottish Timber Products forum, were given a comprehensive insight into the development of the new legislation, which aims to eliminate illegal timber from the European market.

David Sulman, Secretary of the Scottish Timber Trade Association said, “It is clear that as ever, the devil is in the detail and there remains much

detail to be addressed, including the important issue of penalties. One of the key questions that businesses need to answer is whether they are responsible for placing products on the European market for the first time, as an importer, in which case they will be required to undertake a process of environmental due diligence to prove the legality of the product, or if they are traders buying products from first line importers/producers, in which case the requirements are considerably less onerous and amount to maintaining records of purchases and sales in order to provide traceability”.

Russell Paterson, President of the Scottish Timber Trade Association said after the event, “Our workshop has given everyone much to think about. Although there is a lot of work yet to be done on the legislation, there is no doubt that this will have a significant impact on some operations and may well result in further structural change in the industry, as well as adjustments to supply chains. Great care will be required by those representing our interests to avoid unintended consequences for the trade,

“It PaYs to be dIlIGent” saY scottIsh tRadeRs

as there is much at stake. The TTf’s Environmental Due Diligence programme will help support businesses address the requirements of the legislation. We will continue to watch developments

very closely and will keep the trade up to date as matters develop”.

Despite being steeped in history, James Davies is a family company which has lived through four generations and has embraced the modern era by welcoming new and innovative techniques .

The company was incorporated in 1953 when it relocated to its current site on the banks of the River Teifi. Today the business is owned and run by Quinton Davies and employs 40 local people.

Specialising in the production of sawn Larch, Douglas fir, Spruce, traditional peeled fencing and sawn timber; James Davies can offer their customers a 15 year warranty on all premium redwood timber products, giving their customers both assurance and peace of mind.

The IS0 9001 accredited company has also invested in a new moulding re-saw

line (ideal for high-quality capping and decking profiling) and new state of the art saw line.

Managing Director Quinton Davies tells us, “We’ve built our business by making customers’ needs our top priority and building strong working relationships with clients that are based on mutual trust and understanding. We’re also always looking for better ways to improve and recent investments in the very latest sawmill technology ensures ever-better products and improving environmental performance.”

To achieve these plans, Arch’s Auto-Treater (see page 28 for more details) was recently installed to ensure that the very best results are maintained across the board.

“It’s an exciting time for us,” says Quinton. “We have recently secured highway agency sector 4 approval and we are now members of the Wood Protection Association (WPA). As well as achieving such high accreditations, each of our plant operators are now fully qualified to NVQ level. furthermore, we are ISO 9001 accredited which shows our commitment to providing high quality products and services which gives a competitive edge towards the company’s marketing.”

Durable, top quality timber products and a reliable, high-quality service are what James Davies Ltd is all about.

Quinton concludes, “Timber is an environment-friendly material and we do all we can to produce timber products in a way that adds to that benefit by limiting the environmental footprint of

harvesting, processing and delivery. So all our round timber is sourced from well managed forests within 50 miles which means that young saplings are planted as mature trees are felled. We’ve even extended our product range so that we now supply and manufactured square agricultural posts made from redwood; these are set to replace the traditional round stakes and should prove much more durable.”

We would like to wish James Davies Sawmills all the success in the future. The best is yet to come!

Teamwork is the key to success at North West Timber Treatments Ltd ., who celebrate 21 years in business this year and are well placed for future growth .

The company, which was started by Roger Mayor in nearby Haydock, presently occupies a purpose-built 10 acre site at Ashton in Makerfield, near Wigan and has three other branches. They employ a team of around 50 staff across the four centres.

Over the years their acquisitions have included the purchase of Rosbotham’s Timber and Building Supplies in Skelmersdale; followed by joining forces with Creca Sawmill in Annan, Dumfriesshire, which is now the sawmilling arm of North West Timber. The next additions to the North West

Timber stable were a concrete facility in St Helens and fencing manufacturing site in Manchester.

Sales Manager Andrew foster, who has been with North West Timber for 19 years, is one of Roger’s highly talented and ambitious management team. He is totally committed to the company’s ideals.

‘We are a growing company that supplies only the best quality fencing and timber related goods quickly, efficiently and at competitive prices to our extensive customer base. We will go anywhere in the country and if we say we are going to deliver in

London at 8 in the morning you can be sure that’s what we will do. Our next day service really is just that. That’s why we have developed such a strong reputation in the industry and we are not going to let it go.’

North West Timber prides itself on being able to provide any type of customer with exactly the product they require ranging from a small retail sale to a huge order for a contractor.

The Ashton in Makerfield site includes their own treatment facility which offers an excellent turnaround of treated timbers including Osmose Naturewood in green and brown

and Osmose Clearchoice. Loyalty to the companies with whom they have always done business is another of North West Timber’s principles and their 21 year relationship with Osmose is a clear example of just that.

Whilst the full name is North West Timber Treatments Ltd it is more often referred to by just the first three words. The timber merchants’ side of the

business makes up approximately 95% of their trade with the timber treatment operation making up 5%.

‘North West Timber is how most people know us,’ says Roger. ‘Our business has a split of around 75% contractors, councils and building companies and 25% general retail. The retail side is growing steadily year on year we are in the process of doubling the size

of our internal shop making way for a wider product range.’

Roger is optimistic with regard to not just North West Timber’s prospects but also the industry’s path.

‘It’s certainly hard to read the future but it is looking a lot brighter than it has done. In the past two years everyone seems to have been in turmoil over cutbacks and there are many who have feared that we might be heading for a second recession. Rising fuel and energy costs are a concern and you need to be vigilant in controlling your overheads, but there are a lot of positive signs out there for companies who are prepared to grasp opportunities. If anyone can carry on and grow through times like this then they will be in a strong position.’

‘The main benefit I feel we have here is our people, our team. They really are the key to how well we will do. We very rarely lose people once they start here. My own preference when taking people on is to bring staff in that don’t know the industry and train them in our ways. We find that means everyone works the same way, understanding what we’re about, whether they are a fork lift driver, as I was when I started in the industry, a joiner or one of the office team.’

‘The team I have around me is highly ambitious and we want to keep up the momentum of what we have achieved so far. I have a lot of really strong, experienced people coming through the ranks and I am keen to make sure we keep this winning team.’

That’s one of the reasons why North West Timber may well expand again in the years to come. Their main trading area at present is in a 50 mile radius taking in North Wales, Anglesey, the Pennines, Kendal and Stoke but in Roger’s words ‘there are more chimney pots heading towards the south’. That might give an indication of where their future growth lies.

In addition to their ambitions the company also takes an active part in the community sponsoring local football teams and is presently involved in raising much needed funds for cancer research.

Procter Fencing & Concrete Products has invested in improvements to its One-Stop-Shop fencing materials supply operations in Bedwas (South Wales) and Garforth (Yorkshire) . More staff have been employed to provide a better service to customers, plus there is now a wider choice of fencing products and accessories, and bigger stocks . Procter can deliver fencing materials to any site in the UK quickly and economically . The investment in the fencing supply business is good news for trade customers who want to obtain everything they need from one place; the large stocks and wide range will benefit fencing contractors nationwide, as well as fencing merchants and builders’ merchants who need a source of concrete posts to complement timber fencing panels .

To illustrate the breadth of the range, slotted concrete posts are available in six different heights and in end, corner, intermediate and three-way styles. There are also universal, recessed and heavy-duty concrete fence posts in a choice of heights. for chain link and weldmesh security fencing, the company has no less than 60 different types and heights of

straight and cranked posts, all available from stock. Popular sizes and styles of fence post are available from stock in coloured concrete.

Jeremy Procter, the Managing Director of Procter fencing & Concrete Products, comments: “We have invested in people and products, really moving the operation up a gear. Judging by the market response, especially after we opened the Bedwas operation in 2008, there is a clear need for a one-stop-shop for quality fencing products at competitive prices, with the ability to provide quick deliveries on non-stocked items such as customized gates and non-standard sizes of fencing and posts.”

for over 30 years the Garforth site has supplied concrete fence posts, but now it stocks all of the products from the Procter fencing range. The Bedwas site also carries comprehensive stocks. Both sites offer concrete and steel posts, concrete gravel boards, chain link, mesh rolls, railings, palisade and entrance gates - all in a choice of styles and sizes. Other products include line wire, fittings, barbed wire, razor wire, tools and PPE.

To support the supply of fencing materials, the company has redeveloped its website. This gives customers instant access to downloadable brochures, product datasheets, drawings, installation instruction sheets and price lists. Special offers are promoted via the website and email newsletter, and there is a further 5% discount off the first order for anyone registering online and completing a short survey.

Jeremy Procter concludes: “We are aiming to fulfil every need for fencing materials. Moreover, we strive to save customers time, trouble and money by offering deliveries, non-standard products, estimates, budget prices, free technical advice, and site survey and drawing services.”

Anticipating a continued increase in the lucrative ‘grow your own’ industry, garden centres across the UK are preparing for an early springtime rush on sales of market gardening products .

And as the latest sales phenomenon sweeps the country, leading garden and landscape specialist M&M Timber has come up with a new product display centre to help its many independent trade outlets capitalise on the increased sales opportunities.

Designed to maximise sales appeal, the ‘grow your own’ display occupies a floor space of up to 20 square metres and features M&M Timber’s top selling horticultural range of treated timber products. Included in the rustic line up are the ever popular veggiebeds, planters, a cold frame, poultry ark, herb wheel, grow bag stand and a range of complementary cottage style fencing with a point of sale display board.

Already being taken up by some of the larger retail outlets, the ‘grow your own’ product display centre costs around £750 and includes

free on site installation. A display was recently installed outside the main entrance to Webbs Garden Centre, near Droitwich.

“We have seen a considerable market swing towards ‘good life’ gardening over the last few years,” says M&M Timber’s Managing Director Nigel Poyner. “This sector of the market is obviously recession resistant and we are delighted to report that our sales are growing year on year.”

Integral to your future

When Alan Wallis started his degree in Business Management at Oxford Brookes University a little over 12 years ago, he didn’t expect to be running his own enterprise fresh from graduation,

and he certainly didn’t think it would be in fencing .

Having grown up on a livestock and arable farm, Alan picked up some stock

fencing skills and it wasn’t until he was back from university for the summer that they were called upon again when a friend received several quotes for some fencing work, which Alan knew

he could do for half the price. Upon returning to complete his course, Alan put some ads around and from there, Wallis fencing grew.

Now, ten years on, the company consists of Alan and friend Max Trengrove (of Trentwood fencing), as well having a few sub-contractors on-hand for larger jobs.

“It works really well”, says Alan, “We employ subcontractors when required, avoiding unnecessary overheads in quiet periods. That way we manage to stay competitive.”

With 70% of Alan’s work residential and the rest made up of commercial and agricultural fencing – most of which is equestrian – both him and Max find merits in each sector and enjoy the variety that every new job brings.

The pair are currently completing stage 2 of their NVQ in fencing alongside Tim Drew of fACS, and are also keen on ensuring that fSC timber is used on each job, supplied by Bouchier, Oxford fencing Supplies and McVeigh Parker.

“I tend to think this industry is really competitive, and whatever quote you give, somebody will always undercut you and most customers won’t realise that they are missing out on the quality of workmanship. I often take a look at jobs I haven’t got due to somebody giving a lower estimate and I tend me be amazed at how shoddy the work is.”

Clearly passionate about his fencing, Alan has invested heavily in his enterprise with the recent addition of a 3 tonne 360° digger, a post banger and various other pieces of equipment, including a modified concrete breaker which both he and Max are really impressed with. And although much of Wallis fencing’s work is in back gardens, they are also prepared for the jobs on a larger scale, such as a recent project for Neary Construction and the National Grid which required 3.5km of fencing to be erected.

Alan tells me, “We find that most of our work comes from word of mouth, and our website serves us well, as do the few ads we place in local community magazines around Benson and surrounding areas.”

Things certainly seem peachy for Alan, as he concludes our meeting: “I love what I do, being my own boss and working outdoors all day (with no gym membership required, as Max adds) – we’re very comfortable as we are and are currently booked up for the next six weeks, so as long as that continues we’ll be happy.”

forestry

While one area of Government is saying it will protect ancient woodland as part of its review of the future of the public forest, the Department for Transport is openly admitting that High Speed 2 will threaten up to 19 ancient woods (which) could be subject to land take .

In fact, Woodland Trust analysis shows potential loss of a minimum of 21 ancient woods along the proposed route for

the rail line between London and the north of England.

Despite Government claims that hope to lessen this loss, including translocation and the proposed planting of up to 2 million trees, the Woodland Trust believes that no mitigation strategy can compensate for the impact, nor on the further 27 ancient woodland sites which could be directly or indirectly affected by the track’s construction

and use, according to the plans set out in the public consultation.

The Woodland Trust actively supports moves towards ‘greener’ transport but believes it needs to be efficient, of benefit to the majority of the public and should not sacrifice the environment’s rarest habitats. The current route casts doubt on the green credentials of the overall scheme and once again, our woods and trees are under threat.

Working together with other fencing businesses is what Urban Fencing is all about . Andrew Fairhurst has been involved in the security fencing industry for the best part of 20 years and he believes there is no better way to succeed than in playing to everyone’s strengths . Andrew’s strengths are working with end users and contractors alike who look for expert advice on the best products for the right applications .

‘If you build partnerships with like minded contractors there is a benefit to everyone. It enables us to work closely with the fencing industry at the sharp end, building a good solid and trusting foundation. It enables us as a supplier to work alongside good quality fencing companies who

I know will install our products to the highest standards. We’re not installers of fencing, we’re here to make sure that we meet with customers demands as a supplier of sound quality products. I would like to think that we are developing a reputation as a company who endorses this. Meeting with contractors on site installing our products has learnt me a lot recently, it gives me the confidence that the fencing world from Urban’s point of view is in good hands. Working in partnerships counts for a lot especially in these hard times.

Urban fencing offer standard products from stock located centrally in the UK providing a quick and national delivery service, complimented by prices that are highly competitive.

. . . and this is what Sunnyvale have to say

We contacted Urban Fencing earlier this year . We wanted to create a unique and attractive Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) to compliment other high quality play and leisure facilities on our holiday park . We occupy a very prominent harbour side location and the Park and its facilities are very visible in the local area .

We were immediately impressed by Urban fencing’s enthusiasm for the project and competitive pricing. We also wanted to enhance security along the perimeter to the Park where there is a public footpath crossing over a five acre field that we own. We asked Urban to quote for that work as well. They advised us on the right product for us in terms of appearance and with the ability to stand up to the salt air atmosphere that comes with our beachside location.

Having advised us and noted our requirements Andrew, the proprietor of Urban, expedited fabrication even taking into account our special order colour requirements for the MUGA and installation was completed fully within seven days of the arrival of all materials on site and in readiness for the start of the season. The end result is that we and our customers are delighted with the eye catching MUGA area and reassured by the added security provided by the 400m plus of perimeter fencing. We have been delighted with the service provided by Urban and their sub-contractors attention to detail post completion of the work. They clearly take a real pride in what they do and we would definitely recommend them to others.

Robert Jones, Director of Sunnyvale Caravan Park

One of the company’s most recent projects has been in North Wales, at Sunny Vale Caravan Park in Rhyl. Andrew is particularly pleased with outcome.

‘We have been responsible for the fencing requirement for what is a brand new sports facility at Sunnyvale, including goal recesses and a basketball systems. The finished project looks stunning and has added an outstanding new feature to the holiday centre for the holiday season. The colours used look spectacular too with the posts in sunflower yellow and the panels in cobalt blue.’

Urban fencing was also involved with the supply of perimeter fencing at Sunnyvale providing new fencing & gates for the brand new touring caravan field. The product used was 2 metre high DB-8.

Urban specialise in the supply of security mesh fencing, sports systems, tubular & solid bar railings & matching gates.

‘Our aim is always to make life simple and be personable. We assist in choosing the best products for each individual application whether it is a holiday resort, school, business or whatever other project comes along. I believe our comprehensive knowledge and honest approach goes down well with our customers and fingers crossed it may rub off on other like minded fencing companies too.

APF 2012 will be held at Ragley Estate, Alcester, Warwickshire on the 13/14/15th September 2012 by kind permission of the Marquess Of Hertford .

The APf Exhibition is the UK’s largest exhibition for the woodland, forestry, arboriculture and fencing industries. Presented by Confor, APf 2012 will build on the huge success of APf 2010 at Cannock Chase when over 250 exhibitors and 16000 visitors attended. The APf Exhibition was

previously held at Ragley Estate in 2004 and 2006.

Exhibition Director, Mike Box, commented “We are very grateful to Lord Hertford for allowing us to hold our Exhibition at Ragley again. We have a fantastic new site with good access which allows exhibitors plenty of space to demonstrate as well as giving us plenty of room for all the usual competitions and features.”

British Seed Houses has once again come to the rescue of the landscaper, with an exciting new wild flower mixture which is as attractive to the eye as it is to the multitude of wildlife for which it will provide a habitat . WF17 is set to change the misconceptions that have grown up around these mixtures .

Wild flower areas are a popular choice for all types of developments, from new roads to hotels and shopping

centres. Yet developers are frequently disappointed with their choice, seeing the area deteriorate into a dull weedy mess.

“Architects often imagine a wild flower meadow to be like a herbaceous border,” says British Seed Houses’ Richard Brown, “Yet the reality is that many native wild flower species are unspectacular to look at and that it can take a year or two to get a full display.”

British Seed Houses has sought to tackle this issue with Wf17, which combines colourful native varieties the Corn Marigold, Cornflower and field Poppy with non-native species such as Californian Poppy, fairy Toad flax, Herbal Tansy and Tickseed.

“These are not invasive species, but are more akin to garden varieties and provide an ideal compromise for those specifying wild flowers to create a habitat,

but still requiring a good visual display,” says Richard.

As well as offering bold flowers, Wf17 is also tolerant to changeable climatic conditions, simply requiring the water and increasing temperatures offered by April seeding.

New from McVeigh Parker Predator XFENCE . This fence comes with all the properties of XFENCE with the added advantage of a patented four wrap hinge joint within the fence pattern .

This hinge allows the fence to have an apron fold either at the top or bottom of the fence which will act as defence to burrowing or climbing predators. The benefits of this type of fence is that there is no compromise in its overall strength and appearance, also erection becomes a lot easier with a saving in both time and labour.

McVeigh Parker have recently completed 3500m otter exclusion fence for Hawbridge fishery in Worcestershire. The project involved erecting a perimeter fence around four fishing lakes, the fence was buried over 400mm then backfilled the 950cm vertical part of the fence was tensioned up, allowing the 450mm hinged overhang to be fixed to 45 degree cranked arms. Mr T.Smith the owner researched and spoke to many experts, and along with McVeigh Parker designed a specification that ticked all the boxes. The finer mesh, the 24% stronger X Knot and Xtralife coated wire meant that once erected there would be no further maintenance for years to come.

It’s the Law

Otters ( Lutra lutra) received full protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (WCA) also the EC Habitats Directive.

The otter is classed as a European Protected species and level carries the highest level of protection. This legislation makes it an offence to kill or injure an otter or attempt to do so, to damage or destroy their resting or breeding places or obstruct access to them.

What does this mean for the safety of Otters and the protection of fisheries?

Since the ban, the growth in the otter population has thrived to nearly every county in the United Kingdom. Otters are regarded by some as pests decimating fish stock’s, others regard them as special wildlife that has every right to protection from not only human sources but highways also.

The ban will only lead to this conflict increasing, the otter is here to stay so there is a real need to find the best solution to contain and protect these animals.

fencing seems to be the only answer, but what kind…?

There have been many trials over the years to determine which fence offers the best defence/protection. Latest trials tested the suitability of hinge joint and mesh size against X knot, the results were very encouraging in favour of a one piece vertical wire mesh XfENCE, which prevented the otter moving the wires apart to gain access.

PRemIUm otteR xFence

Fence options

Since otters have become an issue fencing them in and out has been a challenge and it is only going to get worse.

Electric fencing has been used to good advantage, however this requires monitoring and regular maintenance.

Chain link has been the wire of choice for many years due to its finer mesh, but it can be costly and labour intensive to erect.

Hinge jointed wire netting has been manufactured and used, however the hinge joint can be forced larger especially by other predators such as

badgers, enabling access by otters.

XFENCE with all its current properties has once again proved the wire of choice, capable of tackling the most difficult of situations.

XFENCE Predator promises new dimensions in fence security coupled with real hassle free longevity, it simple can’t be overlooked.

We are pleased to supply

Westwood Timber and wish them

continued success for the future

Husband and wife team Colin and Wendy Forster formed Westwood Timber and Fencing in August 2001 . It wasn’t the best time to be opening up a business in the countryside, with Foot & Mouth Disease restrictions causing problems, but they have built a successful and thriving business serving the needs of their locality over the past decade .

‘We have principles,’ says Wendy. ‘We believe in supporting local people. We are very loyal to that feeling. I am a great advocate of buying produce from local butchers, the fish man and the vegetable market and we are the same in business. We have stuck with our local suppliers such as Taylormade in County Durham and Willowcrete in Sunderland. It’s not always about the cheapest price.’

Colin has always lived at Tall Trees in Dalton on Tees and previously worked with his father and two brothers. His father bought 3 acres here in 1962 and

celebRatInG 10 YeaRschRIs beRRY vIsIts WestWood tImbeR & FencInG at dalton on tees

the original family business started as a timber yard. Back then the demand was from the National Coal Board for pit props.

Wendy is a farmer’s daughter born just a mile and a half away. Her experience prior to the launch of Westwood Timber & fencing was in landscaping having worked as secretary for a turf company, J & B farnaby, near Scotch Corner.

Today’s business is far different to the days of pit props and serving the needs of the coal mines of the North East, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire.

‘When Colin’s previous partnership with his brothers came to an end the two of

us sat at our kitchen table and decided what to do. Up until then Colin had only ever cut timber. We decided on going into the fencing side of things and picked up a lot of work with schools and local authorities. That has continued and we now have a wide variety of customers including local authorities, schools, domestic fencing and agricultural.’

What was once an 80/20 ratio of timber sales to erecting fences has now shifted considerably. Westwood Timber & fencing is now showing a split of around 70/30 to fence construction over timber sales. The company employs a team of 10 with two gangs out all of the time.

‘It’s the way things have happened for us. We have become established and a lot of our work now comes from word of mouth. Our reputation comes as a result of that, and carrying out the work when it is scheduled to happen and to an excellent standard.’

Wendy believes that the time and money they have invested in accreditations and training is also bearing fruit.

‘We do get a lot of school work, that’s because we have gone down the line of CHAS accreditation, enhanced criminal record checks and health & safety. We are very proud of who we are and what we can offer. When you have spent a lot of time, money and energy on training and developing your team you want to use that expertise.’

Whilst the business is also still a working

timber yard Colin tells of how their overall work has moved further towards metal fencing.

‘’Wood is still what we sell most of but I would say the ratio here is more 60/40 to wood. We have certainly moved more towards metal from when we started 10 years ago. We now put up a lot of palisade and security mesh fencing.’

Colin and Wendy are happy with where the business is at present, but they are wary of what the future might hold as Colin points out.

‘We’re doing well in this economic climate. If we can sustain that this year then I think we will be doing very well. We think it’s going to be tougher. Each tender you have to look at even harder. I don’t think the proposed cutbacks in public services have affected us yet.’

Wendy tells of how the company name and corporate colours came about.

‘It’s simple. We are situated on West Lane and we sell wood, so Westwood. Purple is my favourite colour and Colin’s is yellow.’

Their relaxations are golf and horses. Colin plays off a 7 handicap at the new Rockcliffe course nearby and Wendy enjoys happy hacking. They both share a passion for horse racing, particularly National Hunt and Point to Point.

The team at Westwood Timber & fencing has either been with Colin and Wendy since they started or have joined up since – but no-one leaves! That’s probably an indicator of just how much they care about their team and their business – but it also might be something to do with Wendy’s cakes!

She bakes – and friday is cake time from 4pm! Sounds like a good time to visit, unfortunately I got it wrong and turned up at 10am!

fencing News congratulates Colin and Wendy on their 10 years in business.

Zaun one of the market leaders in the production of fencing solutions for high security and commercial applications, invited Lord Green, UK Minister for Trade and Investment, to officially open the new facility on Steel Drive.

The new 50,000 sq ft factory will help Zaun meet increasing demand for fencing solutions, particularly in the high security market, which is rising in importance to protect the UK’s critical national infrastructure.

Paul Painter, joint Managing Director at Zaun said, “In spite of the recession, we have managed to grow our business year on year, which is testament to our workforce, innovative product range, service and manufacturing expertise. This new facility will further

increase our productivity, boost job opportunities in the area and help retain manufacturing in the UK and provide a firm foundation for expansion into international markets.”

Lord Green commented, “We have an ambition in this country to turn around our export performance so that

the British economy is dependent on exports to world markets rather than reliant on demand at home. This will be a marathon and not a sprint but we have a great deal of talent in a lot of industry sectors in the UK and we are starting from a position of strength. The advanced engineering sector, in particular, is a good example of an

area where there are thousands of SMEs in the supply chain, which are exporting overseas and winning business in growing markets.”

The organisers of the biennial South West Woodland Show are delighted to report that exhibitor bookings are pouring in, as is the generous support of sponsors .

The gold sponsorship category is now filled by: Euroforest, forest fuels Ltd, Knight frank and Southern Wood fuels Ltd. Some silver, bronze and minor sponsorship opportunities are still available and companies are encouraged to come forward to explore these. There is some information on these on the website.

The support of the forest Programme as Confor’s partner, has added a valuable new dimension to the show, including site visits on the preceding day (8th September 2011).

Nick Hoare, Chairman of the show committee said, “The South West Woodland Show is a superb event that benefits all those involved with the forest industry and wider rural economy. The show is ideally situated in central southern England and attracts exhibitors and visitors from across the country. We are most grateful to the sponsors for their generous support and particularly welcome Knight frank as a new gold sponsor. There are still valuable and varied sponsorship opportunities available. In fact there is something to suit everyone and every budget.”

Nick continued, “for suppliers to the forestry, wood, woodfuel and wider rural sector, this is an essential venue

The demountable structure was designed for last year’s London Festival of Architecture (LFA) by Tim Lucas, Partner at Price & Myers . The pavilion provided a 3600 stage for talks and events during the festival and was installed at two locations in central London .

TRADA Membership & Marketing Manager Rupert Scott said, “This clever structure says so much about what is possible with timber today, which is exactly what Timber Expo and the integral In Touch with Timber conference intend to convey. It will literally provide the perfect platform for TRADA and the event as a whole to deliver their message to specifiers.”

The structure is made from lengths of black cord and finnforest ‘Kerto’ engineered timber edge beams arranged in the shape of two intersecting hyperbolic paraboloids, the geometric form that lends its name to the pavilion.

The beams are linked together in the middle and at their tips like four pairs of scissors: the joints form a mechanism that raises the pavilion when the corners are pulled together. This means that the three-storey high structure can be put up without any need for cranes or scaffolding.

Timber Expo takes place at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on 27th & 28th September 2011, for more information visit www.timber-expo.co.uk.

Building on Glee’s value as a year round resource, the show organisers, Emap Connect, have recently unveiled an enhanced website for 2011 . Designed to benefit both exhibitors and buyers visiting the show, the new website features a number of improved functions that will help users benefit from a 365 day, interactive shop window .

The new Glee website will enable exhibitors to maximise their presence at Glee through ongoing interaction with buyers. from receiving buyer requests for more information to attracting sales leads and networking with key business partners, the website can open a world of opportunity for exhibitors.

Nick Davison, Glee Show Director explains: “Exhibitors need to think of the website as their year round exhibition stand, and therefore need to have a profile that is reflective of both them as a business and their products. Creating a powerful first impression is essential to help exhibitors capture the attention of those buyers looking to see what they can find at Glee. To help exhibitors achieve this, we have created a check list to help better manage their profiles and ultimately improve their online performance. The checklist includes

tips on how to do everything from uploading images to using keyword searches to help buyers find exactly what they are looking for.”

As part of the new website exhibitors will be able to monitor the effectiveness of their online presence. Information available to them will include total number of visits to their profile, how many click-throughs have been generated to their own website, who

has viewed what and who is following their online progress. Added to this, the enhanced website will allow for faster and easier correspondence between exhibitors and buyers. from matching exhibitors and buyers together, to helping arrange meetings and issuing buyer alerts, exhibitors and buyers will have everything they need to make the most of Glee’s profit boosting, year round potential.

“The new website marks a really exciting time for us and we really hope that exhibitors will invest the time needed to optimise the online profile. We’ve already seen exhibitors reaping the rewards of having an improved profile and hope that many others will soon see the benefits of the service as well.”

Because of this motorists are also put at risk through distraction and evasive action .

furthermore, encroaching urban developments, construction sites and industrial activities (such as quarrying) pose even greater threats to wildlife ecosystems. Some species such as the Great Crested Newt are now protected by law due to declining numbers from loss of habitat.

Hy-Tex UK have therefore developed a comprehensive range of fencing systems each designed with the well being of herpetofauna and other small mammals, in mind. These systems ensure the successful management of wildlife habitats where traffic and other developments pose a problem.

The continually evolving Ecofender newt barrier range of fence sheets,

panels and accessories are best suited to temporary projects (such as construction activities and relocation) and its design meets the Natural England “Great Crested Newt Mitigation Guidelines”.

While for road migration crossings the more durable ACO Wildlife Guidance fence, Tunnel and Kerb systems provide long term solutions for safe passage of amphibians, reptiles and small mammals and are designed to conform to mitigation guidelines in the Highways Agency “Design Manual for Roads”.

In just two years, David Green has turned a company in the throes of receivership into a huge success story . Having rescued the debt-ridden WH Wesson Fencing from disappearing into memory, David and his trusty team have worked impossibly hard to resurrect the forty year-old company as a popular, trusted and profitable business – despite the grim economic climate .

Having started out sweeping garages after leaving school and becoming a panel-beater before trying his hand at gardening, as well as fitting in seven years work as catering manager at Heathrow David saw Wesson was for sale and decided that this was the move he needed to make.

Set in a traditional yard tucked away off the main road in Brookwood, Woking, and surrounded by old timber-clad buildings sublet to a fabricator and powder-coater, there are plenty of comings and goings and lots of folk popping in for a roll of this or a panel of that. As one of

FRom bUst to boomhoW davId GReen tRansFoRmed Wesson FencInG

Surrey’s leading contractors, if someone knows the recipe for how to make it work, it’s David:

“We do everything - all kinds of fencing and gates from acoustic, electric, razor wire and deer fencing to bespoke gates. We also provide tree surgery and landscaping services – you name it, we do it. We pride ourselves on being approachable and friendly, and we’ll take anything on and make a good job of it, from the little old granny

who needs a panel replacing to major jobs for large corporate companies, we don’t say no to anyone.”

Some may be sniffy about David’s attitude, but it’s exactly this that’s got him to where he is. Regarded as honest, straight and true to his word, he’s also gained a lot of respect from suppliers, associates and his staff by being ready to muck in and willing to work the long hours required to get the job done. Though David isn’t one

to pretend that the job doesn’t come without its stresses, as he tells me:

“One of more prestigious jobs we’ve done was for Surrey & Sutton East Water, and required 800m of razorwire, with three rows along each part. It took us one hour to do the first roll and there were another 260 to go. I thought I was in serious trouble, but we got the hang of it soon enough and sped up to seven minutes per roll. The finished result was very impressive.”

company profileOther notable jobs include 1000m of fencing at St John the Baptist School in Woking, which came in at a tidy £54k worth of work. With a 50/50 division between trade and domestic, there’s plenty of variety for David and his team, and all customers are equally pleased with the quality of workmanship and service. A huge lever arch file full of glowing comments proves it, as does the company’s forum on Checkatrade with an endless list of top marks and recommendations. In fact, the scoring is so good that David was recently invited to join the rather elite members panel – which is pretty amazing considering that just two and half years ago, nobody would give the company any credit.

David attempts to explain how he’s done it: “When I came on board I brought business from a local golf club and a few other sizeable contracts. Through sheer determination and hard graft I built up a reputation and word of mouth led the way to local councils using us, as well as schools throughout the county. We kept all eight staff on when we took over and my sister Linda now helps Philippa in the office, running a tight ship, looking after their staff and ensuring that everyone’s happy.”

Recently opening a retail outlet at a local garden centre, David is already expanding his horizons, considering changes to the layout of the site as well

as possibility of franchising or buying another company. And though the figures give a good indication of wealth and prosperity, everything David earns is ploughed back into the business.

What strikes me most is the good old fashioned way Wesson fencing does business, which proves that traditional, honest hard work is a recipe for success. With no accounts and a system of payment on invoice, there’s a good deal of trust between all involved. People ring David, whatever the problem, and have faith in him to do a sterling job. Open and modest, anyone who knows the story can see he has a plenty to brag about, but that’s not his style - he’d rather have a laugh, a good yarn and say it like it is. Everyone I meet at the business is a pleasure to talk to

and clearly they all enjoy what they do and conduct themselves professionally, without the need for corporate stuffiness. Off for a well-deserved jolly soon at Brand’s Hatch, David is keen to say thank you to his staff and supporters, and he’s clearly a good man to work for, though he’ll be the first to admit that running an operation like his can be trying at times:

“I struggle with the inch-thick tenders. They seem full of ridiculous questions and take hours to complete, so I’d rather stay away from them. That aside, another thing I’d change about the industry is a bit more allegiance between firms. We’re all in the same game and trying to help each other out but the competition seems fierce.”

Aside from the odd gripe, David seems happy as Larry - proud of his site, his team, his fleet, and the reputation they’ve all worked together to build up. It all seems to be working rather well, as he says: “We’ve got two signwritten Transit Tippers and a Land Rover, which act as a massive advert for us as we’re always busy, so our signs are regularly seen out and about.”

Linda adds, “Most companies are quiet around now but right through the snow and into the Spring we’ve been working non-stop, which is fantastic.”

Office Manager Philippa continues: “In fact, since Dave started here we haven’t stopped! Not like in the old days at all.”

We all like a story that ends well, and this is one that really impresses. At best, WH Wesson pulled in a turnover of £360k, and the cherry on the cake came at the end of the last financial year when David hit just over his target turnover of £502k. from bust to boom in two years, he’s got a lot to be happy about.

Having been in the trade since 1990, Dean first established Fox Fencing four years ago, when his sons decided that the company should be named after their favourite possessions - their bikes . Dean tells me:

“I always wanted to be self-employed. I’ve done private jobs alongside my work since the beginning and it became clear very early on that there was better money to be made by working for myself.”

Offering a range of gates, fencing and outdoor furniture of all kinds, Dean serves both the domestic and commercial sectors, taking on jobs throughout the South and South East.

When I visit Dean and his brother Lee, they are completing the latest installation on an estate in Hounslow, the new fencing joining a large amount of playground bow top, a full-sized sports court, metal fencing around a bin area and a good 100m of closeboard in the car park. Indeed, Dean says the majority of their work is for schools and local councils, since the majority of domestic work has dried up over recent times. “Undercutting is a huge problem” he tells me, echoing the words of many fencers I meet these days, “as there’s always someone to do the job cheaper, but not necessarily to the best standard.”

But that’s not a problem, as fox fencing continues to be busy with plenty of repeat work as well as new leads enquiring through recommendations. “We always deliver – we’ve never had any negative comments about our work and

nIce WoRk IF YoU can Get It...vIctoRIa Poolman meets dean laRkcom oF Fox FencInG to heaR aboUt hIs enteRPRIse

Clearly proud of his enterprise, fencing wasn’t always part of Dean’s master plan. Having grown up spending much of his time on his grandfather’s farm in Beenham, Dean thought he might venture into agriculture, though he doesn’t seem too upset at his career choice:

“There’s not a great deal of money to be made in farming these days. I love being outdoors and I enjoy the variety this job brings, so it definitely beats sitting in an office nine to five.

“I’ve got ambitions of building up to three full-time gangs with me floating between them, and I’d also like to get into some house-building. I don’t want to grow too big as I always like to keep an eye on what’s going on to ensure quality in all aspects of our work.”

Clearly, Dean has his priorities right. And who knows, with a bright future ahead and plenty of hands on deck, fox fencing could pave the way towards a nice little smallholding (with plenty of chicken fencing!)

the fact that we get so many customers returning to us again and again shows we must be doing something right”. And what’s the secret? “Hard work and plenty of banter. Lots of people fail in the early days because they aren’t prepared to graft, but it’s all worth it once there’s enough business to pick and choose the jobs.”

Indeed, Dean’s had some rather good contracts in his time, including projects at Chelsea football club (he happens to be a Chelsea fan) and private jobs for Gary Linekar and Glenn Hoddle. In addition, fox fencing were responsible for the lion pen at Windsor Safari Park and the most jammy job of all at Legoland.

He tells me, “We were installing the zig-zag fencing for queues at the rides but as they were preparing to open the park, we were asked to not only test all the rides, but to eat and drink as much as we wanted from the bars and restaurants. That was a rather good two days, though perhaps we weren’t as productive as usual.”

Not all jobs are quite so much fun, as Dean fills me in on a recent job at Aldermaston Weapons Enterprise, where Health & Safety meant a six hour wait before any work could commence: “We now charge a waiting time because the paperwork and regulations always takes around half a day.”

It is time to go back to mechanical methods to rejuvenate turf, that can offer significant financial and environmental benefits, suggests Tim Merrell of The Grass Group .

“Coming out of a hard winter, there’s an ideal window of opportunity to boost turf health once growth starts,” he explains. “Well timed scarification can encourage healthy growth, tackle disease and make the turf less susceptible to attack by pests. Greenkeepers and Groundsmen can also save on chemical and fertiliser costs.”

“fertilisers and top dressings can get caught up in the mat of thatch and moss rather than benefiting new growth,” Tim points out, “and later in the season will soak up rain or irrigation water like a sponge. A clean sward makes the best use of nutrients, water and air throughout the growing season. Scarification can have a dramatic effect on turf at a key time of year as air gets into the sward, stimulating vigorous growth.”

Thatch can also harbour pests such as wireworms and chafer grub eggs, whereas strong spring growth means they have

scaRIFY noW to GIve tURF a sPRInG boost

nowhere to go, he comments. Making best use of fertiliser and minimising the need for pesticides not only helps cut costs but is also better for the environment. Selecting the right machinery depends on the area to be treated and the amount of material to be removed.

“The industry is being encouraged to move away from quick fixes and return to good husbandry, and clearing out the turf in the spring is an excellent example of this. We have neglected the benefits of mechanical controls in recent years, and it’s an ideal opportunity to go full circle and get the best out of turf by encouraging optimum spring growth,” Tim concludes.

Wood-Mizer has revealed the second of four thin kerf sawmilling ideas suited to small timber processing operations still enduring the credit crunch; basically, an attachment that takes them into new, valuable markets . The latest innovation involves an attachment to two of its smaller mills at moderate cost and permitting new product opportunities .

Wood-Mizer noted the importance of small businesses in the recovery of Europe’s economies, having analysed data from its dealers throughout the continent. The data showed that as in former economic downturns small operations seemed to adapt to changing circumstances better than many larger businesses.

By trimming operating costs and labour hours, and converting into differing new product lines flexibility has been notable within the company. The numbers of Wood-Mizer owners who abandoned wood processing and sold their mills are few.

Wood-Mizer decided to give greater support to small woodworking operations in the form of a series of new, improved timber processing

FRom baRe boaRds to PRoFItable PRoFIles

kits, each designed to produce more ‘selling’ products from less wood.

The latest innovation takes the form of a moulder/planer attachment to the company’s smallest mills enabling them to further convert to saleable profiled beams and columns. Robert Baginski, Commercial Director, claims that by investing another 65% over the cost of a small LT15 band sawmill and increasing operating time the attachment could lead to significantly more profitable revenues.

The MP100 moulder/planer attachment can be added to either an LT15 or smaller LT10. Moulding is achieved by a spindle with four straight, knife-shaped blades driven by a 4kW electric motor.

Moulding depth is up to four millimetres but a shallower (1-2mm per pass) depth results in a smoother surface. If required, the straight blades can be exchanged for figuring or shaping blades (with the maximum moulding depth of 29mm in a few passes).

In this case production of profiled columns or beams starts with clamping a square beam, rigidly on the bed. Subsequently, moulding creates both ‘male’ and female’ profiles in a few passes.

Existing LT15 or LT10 sawmill owners can buy the MP100 and an additional bed segment as add-ons.

Progressive farmer Richard Thomas is trialling an innovative product that claims to double fence post life in a bid to avoid the pitfalls of premature rot .

He has fenced a 10-acre field at his East Midlands farm using 400 posts fitted with Postsaver protective sleeves, which are specially designed to keep timber preservatives in and decay out.

Richard, who is chairman of the Notts branch of the Country Land and Business Association (CLA), hopes the exercise will prove useful, particularly as he plans to expand on the range of conservation schemes at his 2,500-acre farm in Blidworth.

Alongside his well-established business of rearing pigs and growing spring wheat, sugar beet and vegetables such as carrots, asparagus and spinach, Richard aims to create more areas for grazing, which will require a substantial investment in fencing in the near future.

“I have had a few problems where animals have pushed over posts that have rotted prematurely so a low-cost product that can help extend the life

of timber posts to perhaps 15 years or more could prove to be very beneficial,” said Richard.

fencing supplier and timber treatment specialist Jon Walker of Calverton recommended the application of Postsaver sleeves as an added layer of protection to the chestnut posts he has provided for the exercise.

“These sleeves involve only a very small extra cost and they are a good combination with posts that have been treated with the correct strength of preservative solution required for ground contact timbers,” commented Jon, who has 25 years’ experience in the industry and whose business treats 150 tonnes of timber a week.

Designed to protect the most vulnerable part of a fence post from rotting organisms, Postsaver is a tough, double layer polythene and bituminous sleeve developed by brothers Richard and Jim George in response to changes in EU preservative legislation.

“Many farmers and landowners are unaware of the growing problem of premature fence failure associated with the ban on traditional copper, chrome and arsenic preservatives

FaRmeR aIms to keeP Fence Post Rot at baY

in favour of more environment- friendly options.

“These ‘greener’ preservatives are far less effective and mean perfectly good fences are being scrapped because timber posts have rotted through at ground level within a few years,” explained Jim George.

Postsaver sleeves are produced in a range of sizes to fit all popular round and square post sizes. They are easily

applied using a simple hand-held gas burner for lower volume applications or with a purpose-designed, mobile, pro-contractor machine that’s gas powered for use where large volumes of fencing are being treated.

No matter what job you are doing one of the biggest frustrations is often the time it takes . That’s why it is important to have equipment that you can rely on .

Almec fencing, based at Stoke on Trent, purchased a Kanga Kid, the smallest of the Kanga range (2 Series) two years ago and they have been very impressed with its ease of use and ease of transportation. In fact they can’t fault the machine, which they feel has helped them immensely over the time it now takes to complete a job.

‘We first saw it in action at a fencing exhibition demonstration,’ says Leo forrester of Almec. ‘We were taken with its affordability and found the advice offered by their national sales manager Stuart Coar and his team very helpful. We were hand digging our post holes before, but not any more. We use the Kanga predominantly for boring round holes for fence posts. We know we could

get far more out of it than we do, but it is excellent for our needs.’

The ease of usage is particularly important for Leo and the other members of the Almec fencing team.

‘We have 6 full time staff who are all able to get on and use it. The beauty of it is that it is so straightforward to use and you don’t need a special licence to be able to operate it. We take it to jobs on a transit flat bed and the weight of the machine suits the vehicle it is being carried on. Especially in today’s climate of rising fuel prices its light weight is good news.’

Leo also reports that although the machine has had a great deal of usage in the last couple of years it is still in good condition.

‘We keep it indoors when it is not in use and our maintenance and service

kId helPs bUsIness GRoWchRIs beRRY talks WIth kanGa UseRs almec FencInG

needs are always met efficiently and on-time by Stuart and the rest of the team at Kanga. We haven’t had a problem with it at all and if we have needed anything the back-up has never been short of superb.’

So would the company go for something bigger next time and would they stay with Kanga?

‘We don’t need to go up to the next model because what we have is already the right one for us. We will look to replace when the time is right – and when we do I see no reason why it would not be another Kanga Kid.’

Almec fencing has built a considerable reputation since it was formed 20 years ago and has become one of the leading constructors of ball courts for schools and colleges. Recently the company

has also undertaken major work for Premiership football club Stoke City fC, fencing their training ground.

Today’s Almec fencing business now encompasses everything from domestic to industrial and commercial projects operating largely within a 20 mile radius yet extending far beyond that with customers throughout the UK via their proximity to the motorway network.

You will already be familiar with the Bryce Suma brand and the chances are you have heard of Kattrak International Ltd, but have you heard of the Bryce HD180?

Over the years people have made conversions on small tracked machines to suit their own needs and applications. The HD180 is now a commercially available machine and is a unique combination of features that allow a post to be driven with precision quickly and easily without having to move the tracked machine itself for post alignment. This is an important point when working on wet greasy sloping ground as moving the complete machine can upset the alignment between post and mast.

The Bryce HD180 is a lightweight tracked machine that combines the strength and stature of a Suma Post Driver with the agility of tracked dumpers supplied by Kattrak. It is

We also adapt some of our dumpers to carry different attachments, with a particular emphasis on fence post chappers. The latest addition to the fleet is a Bryce HD180, which has been fitted to our 3t Canycom swivel skip machine, shown above. Such has been the interest in this unit that we

have already sold one to Duncan Fisher Contracting from Perthshire. Mr Fisher said “ The thing that really impressed me about this unit was the fact it can swivel 180 degrees, making it much more flexible than other units which have fixed post chappers”. This marks an exiting time for the Ayrshire

Kattrak then gave Bryce a tracked machine for the purpose of developing a high spec.post driver that was compatible with this little machine and so the Bryce HD180 was born the virtues of a small tracked machine are well-documented in that they are compact and lightweight but as Jock says “you can’t hang a big performance post driver on the back of them”. As a fencing contractor, he has always been very focussed on speed and efficiency and has found a way round this problem by developing a machine that has all the performance, features and hitting power of the well-known Bryce Suma in a small lightweight tracked outfit.

The Bryce HD180 is a bespoke piece of machinery exclusive to both Bryce Suma and Kattrak International – the agreement is that Kattrak supplies the tracked dumper and Bryce does the conversion work. The machine’s name is derived from the fact that the tracked dumper is able to swivel through 180º without any fuss and as such, gives the added versatility of being able to drive posts from either side or anywhere in between. The patent for the Bryce HD180 design is currently pending and it looks set to make a substantial impact on the market in the coming months.

Jock added, “The only way I could get the stability and features for this post driver was to use a swivel type track machine with the post driver mounted forward on the chassis mounted over the turret.”

If you would like more information on the HD180 visit www .brycesuma .co .uk or www .kattrak .com Alternatively you can speak to Jock on 07970 730567 or Peter on 07860 231138

Bobcat has launched two new ranges of hydraulic grabs for the company’s E55W, E60 and E80 excavators for applications in demolition, general material handling, construction, utilities and landscaping .

The first range is a new family of grabs for applications in demolition and for general sorting jobs. The new demolition and sorting grabs are available in widths

of 50 cm and 60 cm.

All the demolition and sorting grabs come as standard with the HPX drive. The enclosed design in the HPX drive system helps to protect all components from damage. The maintenance-free HPX design removes the need for vulnerable hydraulic cylinders and bushings and pins. The compact rotation head absorbs extremely high forces and is well suited to

Bobcat has also launched a new range of multi-purpose ‘pick-and-place’ grabs, designed as efficient tools for precise positioning of stones as well as handling of filling material. They are available in widths of 40 cm and 50 cm.

The multi-purpose grabs are available with either the HPX drive or a hydraulic cylinder for opening and closing. The multi-purpose grabs have a shell design which

Spaldings recently announced the introduction of the Evolution fury 125mm Twin Blade Saw. The cutter incorporates double tungsten tipped blades that can power through steel, aluminium, wood and plastic. The revolutionary high performance saw lends itself to straight plunge cuts and working in confined spaces.

The double blade design is a system where the two blades cut in opposing directions to counteract each other and to greatly reduce kickback for optimum safety. The multipurpose saw also provides a fast and clean cut that is virtually free from sparks

and burr and incorporates an integral blade lubrication system to prolong the life of the blade.

Dancing on Ice has inspired everyone to don their skates and emulate their favourite celebrity, but at one ice rink it’s a Kubota tractor that proved to be the star of the show!

Staff at the Eden Project in Cornwall, have been using a Kubota B2230 Compact Tractor to power an Olympia 250 ice machine used to clean and prepare the ice for skate sessions.

Since Eden’s popular seasonal ice rink first opened five years ago, the organisation had used a golf buggy to pull its ice machine. Unfortunately, both machines were written off during a major flood which caused the ice rink to close throughout November 2010.

After consultations between the ice rink staff and Eden Project Transport Manager John Ryan, it was decided that a faster, more powerful and efficient replacement was needed and the Olympia 250 was chosen. After seeing it being driven by a Kubota tractor on the manufacturer’s website, he approached local Kubota dealer Vincent Tractors to find the best machine for the job.

David Marks at Vincent Tractors

kUbota Gets Its skates on FoR the eden PRoJect

suggested that a B30 series tractor, with Kubota’s ETVCS diesel engine and powerful hydraulic lifting system, would be best suited to power the ice machine when fully laden.

Now that the season’s over, John explains that the B2230 has been a huge success: “The Kubota is extremely easy to operate and drive. In fact, it’s been such a hit that I have staff queuing up to be trained how to use it!”

Construction giant Molson Group is reporting brisk business in the improving mini excavator market after acquiring the South West dealership for Kubota Construction Equipment in 2010 .

The Avonmouth-based firm estimates it has supplied a new Kubota machine almost every day since taking over their franchise. This success has now resulted in Molson’s additional appointment as the official Kubota Construction Equipment dealer for the South Wales area, with effect from 1st May 2011.

The 19-strong Kubota mini excavators range is the widest of its kind on the market and extends from the lightweight 980kg K008-3, right up to the eight tonne KX080-3.

All in all, last year was a good time for Molson to join the Kubota team and Jonathan Wilson, the company’s Managing Director, said that their association is shaping up extremely well; “We are delighted that we are further expanding our association with Kubota and will now be selling their

mini excavators throughout the South West and South Wales.”

Kubota (UK) Ltd,Construction Equipment Sales & Marketing Manager, Richard Harrison, said: “Molson’s customers will benefit from being able to buy from the widest and best-selling range of mini excavators on the market, while we will be able to expand our penetration in their area of the country. So far the results have been a significant success; we couldn’t have made these changes at a better time.”

The latest figures from TRACKER, stolen vehicle recovery specialists, reveal that it has recovered more than £15 million worth of plant machinery and equipment over the last five years . The new analysis of its plant and machinery theft recovery information revealed that Kubota is the most stolen brand of plant . The figures highlight the need for increased security on farms, construction sites and plant and machinery depots, as they become increasing targets for plant thieves .

“Our figures show that a staggering 68 per cent of all plant we recover is done so within 24 hours of the stolen vehicle recovery (SVR) device being activated and 10 per cent of those are recovered within just one hour,” reports Stuart Chapman, a Police Liaison Officer from TRACKER. “This is very good news for plant owners who do

have SVR units installed. However, many businesses are still leaving themselves vulnerable to theft, which is an expense and inconvenience most could do without.”

TRACKER recovered 65 per cent of plant worth £10-£20,000, with 22 per cent worth less than £10,000. Just 3 per cent of recovered stolen plant was valued over £50,000, proving that thieves prefer to go shopping for mid-priced plant. Kubota represented 25 per cent of the total plant thefts recorded by TRACKER over the past five years, followed closely by JCB at 19 per cent and Takeuchi at 12 per cent.

TRACKER offers an unrivalled level of protection against the growing threat of plant theft, with its market leading stolen vehicle recovery system significantly increasing the chances of recovery. The system is Thatcham approved,

offering added quality assurance and the possibility of an insurance discount.

A covert transmitter is hidden in one of several dozen places around the plant. There is no visible aerial, so the thief won’t even know it’s there. Unlike other tracking systems, the device works no matter where the plant is hidden, even if taken abroad, offering owners the ultimate in peace of mind should the worst happen.

Concludes Stuart Chapman: “Our analysis of plant theft and recovery data over the last five years confirms that all plant, irrespective of cost, is being targeted by thieves. With the majority of plant manufactured without a unique ignition key it is relatively easy to steal large items. Indeed, plant equipment and machinery is commonly being stolen to order, often involving highly organised criminal groups who

CRASH, the construction and property industries’ charity for homeless people, is delighted to announce the launch of two spectacular Dragon Boat Challenges, which have built up an enormous following amongst the construction industry over the 13 years since they began . The 2011 Challenges take place in Salford Quays, Manchester on Wednesday 8th June and in London on Thursday 30th June, with all proceeds raised going directly to CRASH to help improve the lives of homeless people .

Dragon boat racing has an ancient Chinese history and the Challenges are a re-enactment of a tragic event that took place more than 2,000 years ago in the kingdom of Chu. According to the Chinese calendar, 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit which bodes well for participants in the Dragon Boat

Challenges as it is considered the luckiest sign in the calendar.

Up to 40 crews are expected to battle it out over the 200m race course at each venue, aiming to become top crews in the industry and watched by several hundred spectators.

francesca Roberts, CRASH chief executive adds: “This is an industry favourite which has generated enormous financial support for us in the past. All the money raised through this and similar events goes straight to the projects we help, so it’s money well used.”
