educational experience enjoyed byFelstedians.

In total, Old Felstedians, governors, parents, staff and friends of Felsted willhave donated a staggering £3.3M duringthe last four years. Although the longterm impact is immeasurable, it is clearthat the continued financial supportreceived through bequests and donationsis helping to provide investment inenhanced facilities, development of keynew buildings and provision ofscholarships and bursaries. Thank you toall who generously support the School inthis way. You are helping to build afoundation for the future.

The Follyfield fire generated an inspiringresponse from the whole Felsted Schoolcommunity. Old Felstedians, parents, governors, teaching and operational staffand pupils all reacted with anenthusiasm and energy that created anastonishingly swift response to thedisaster. It is great testament to the wholecommunity that the Follyfield girls were

firmly ensconced intheir new temporaryabode by thebeginning of theAutumn Term. TheSchool has alreadyappointed architectsBarnsley, Hewittand Mallinson todesign the newhouse and we areplanning to open this as part of the450th anniversary celebrations in 2014.After a great deal of consideration, theGovernors have agreed to explore andcommit to placing the new building onthe Senior School site to facilitate easierand safer access to the School for theFollyfield girls. This action would alsorelease the space on the other side of themain road, adjacent to the PreparatorySchool, for future development. We willkeep you informed on the progress.

In a competitive world, we recognise that high academic achievement isn’t the only requirement for a successful future and mucheffort has been invested in the personal development of each Felstedian through the introduction of the Felsted Diploma. Thisrewards the engagement of pupils in the diverse co-curricular programme which offers over 160 activities, allowing for specialismin a particular interest rather than a “one size fits all” approach. Students are being introduced to the world of work through theWork Education and Careers programme and Felsted Network which together, are providing excellent vocational support topupils, with the help of parents and Old Felstedians. It is participation in these activities alongside the academic studies that isproducing a great characteristic of the Felstedian; confidence without arrogance.

This confidence is expressed on the sports field; through music, art and drama performances; public debating; internationalengagement with the Model United Nations and Round Square conferences; leadership within the Combined Cadet Force andDuke of Edinburgh Awards and service through our links with the Magic Bus Charity, Felsted Mission and the myriad of otherschool activities.

All of this takes place within an outstanding pastoral community and this was expressed most clearly in the wonderful response tothe Follyfield fire. The support that we have received from the whole Felsted School community has been a source of inspirationand encouragement and enabled the Follyfield girls to take up residence in their new semi-permanent House with greatenthusiasm and spirit at the beginning of the Autumn Term.

We continue to plan for the 450th Anniversary celebrations of 2014, and we are buoyed by the substantial Marshall and SkillLegacies bequeathed to the School. Our drive is to take the School to an even greater level of development to realise our vision tobe a leading co-educational boarding and day school regionally, nationally and internationally. We are seeking to not onlycelebrate in 2014 but also to inspire and to redefine the style and image of this great School. This continues to be a full, vibrantand really exciting place to be – a wonderful place to work with so much energy, passion, will to make a difference and helpothers, and exceptional achievement in everything that we do…

My personal thanks to you for your financial support, so generously given.Dr Mike Walker

A Welcome from the HeadmasterLast year, I commented that we are striving to achieve higher academic standards through inspirationalteaching and rigour and I am delighted to report that students have responded to the challenge by producingvery pleasing results. In comparison with 2011, these include a 5% increase in A* to B grades in GCSE and ‘A’level and 5% increase in the average points awarded in the International Baccalaureate to 34.4. Based onnational analysis, Felsted is amongst the top 10% of schools nationally in terms of the academic value that weadd to each student’s performance. These are remarkable achievements in a year when academic results havecome under a great deal of scrutiny in the media.

2012 has been a truly memorableyear for the School. The activity of the Development Officeincludes fundraising on behalf of FelstedSchool, Registered Charity No. 310870.The activity has seen a pivotal momentthis year with the wonderful legacybequests received from FrederickMarshall (c43-47) and Mary Skill (theSkill family have had a long associationwith Felsted), that will see totaldonations in excess of £2.9M. We haveexperienced an increasing number ofpeople considering Felsted School intheir Wills and this, combined with theongoing generosity of donors, is helpingto establish a firm financial foundationfor the education of current and futuregenerations of Felstedians.

The Annual Fund continues to thrive withtotal donations exceeding £85,000 duringthe last three years. This has providedexcellent equipment for the clubs, societies and co-curricular activities thathelp to enhance the outstanding

The inclement summer weather proved to beincongruous with the School’s cricket fixture list and soit was a timely occasion for the new all-weather cricketnets to be installed. This enabled pupils to hone theirskills and enjoy practice when the pitches were oftdeemed unplayable. The nets were officially opened byGraham, Gordon’s son, on Speech Day, when many who had donated to the GordonBarker Appeal were able to enjoy the Robins’ vs 1st XI cricket match. John Cockettspoke with great humour and aplomb in honour of his former colleague and friendGordon. This is an outstanding facility and thank you to all who supported the Appeal.

LegaciesEvery gift in every Will makes a difference.

Throughout Felsted’s history, legacies havebeen of vital importance in helping theSchool to provide improved facilities andto enable pupils to benefit from a Felstededucation through the award of bursariesand scholarships.

Whether it is The Bury, bequeathed by Lt Col Douglas Phillott; the William HuntTrust supporting the education ofnumerous Felstedians through bursarialsupport or the recent bequests from theMarshall and Skill estates, legacies canhelp to transform facilities and indeedlives.

With a wonderful 450 year history ofeducation, the vision for the School is tobe a leading boarding and day school forcurrent and future generations ofFelstedians. This will require continuedinvestment to enhance facilities, developkey new buildings and the provision ofscholarships and bursaries. A legacy canhelp to ensure that, for generations tocome, Felsted continues to compete withits peer institutions on all fronts.

A legacy bequest is free from InheritanceTax by virtue of the fact that the School isa Registered Charity. In light of recentlegislation effective April 2012, a legacy of 10% of your net estate also reduces theInheritance Tax rate from 40% to 36%. On larger estates, this can prove to be ofsignificant value to other beneficiaries.

We would ask you to please considerleaving a legacy to Felsted School toensure that the School remains at theforefront of education for futuregenerations of Felstedians. Every gift, nomatter how large or small, will make adifference. It is strongly advised thatprofessional legal advice be sought indeciding how best to arrange your affairs.

If you would like more information onleaving a legacy, please contact us.
