It may have been because of ^••jthe pale color of the stone orig- ' inally brought from Normandy by William the Conquerer. ALTHOUGH this fifth century Olmec idol once inspired a respectful fear in all who gazed upon it, this modern Texas child seems to be more afraid of the camera than the stone image that spans fifteen centuries of her

proud heritage. The basalt sculpture, which stands outside the Mexican pavilion at HemisFair '68 in San Antonio, Tex., is part of a large collection of pre-Columbian pieces displayed at the Mexican exhibit.

White Tower in the Tower of London. Royal Lime

Despite its name, the tower has been dark gray for as long as

D e pa r t m e n t , certain why it originally got that of title. It may have been because of

^••jthe pale color of the stone orig-' inally brought from Normandy by William the Conquerer. Or, perhaps, because of the periodic lime washing it used to get when it was a royal residence.

The most notable landmark of all won't be cleaned—Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. Why? Because a thin coating of grime highlights and enhances the delicate tracery and stonework.
