Overview of Bipedalism 1

Chapter 3 focuses on what we can call the “first chapter” of the human evolutionary story: the

earliest upright walking primates. We call them the hominins.

Named for members of tribe Hominini and refers to all great apes (orangutans, gorillas,

chimpanzees, and bonobos) and humans.

We know (now) that chimpanzees and bonobos are more closely related to us than to other apes.

So what is a hominin? Defined by dental features (small canines & thick molar enamel) bipedal

locomotion (obligate), large brain size, and tool making behavior.

Even so, the large brain is not a characteristic of early hominins as once thought

The discredited concept that a large brain was a precursor to becoming a hominin was called

“brain first” argument.

The ape-human split, where our ancestors and those of modern apes occurred at least 6 million

years ago (mya) and maybe as early as 8 mya.

The trait that distinguishes us is obligate bipedalism.

All primates have a tendency to an erect body posture, but efficient bipedalism is the primary

locomotion only in the hominins.

• We see this in our striding gait as we alternately put weight on a single, fully extended hind

limb.

• We are so well developed for this form of locomotion that we are operate at nearly peak

efficiency.

• In addition to efficiency, bipedalism allow for higher maneuverability and flexibility.

• A look at the fossil record suggests that when our ancestors left the trees, our ancestors were

adapted to a fair amount of upper-body erectness.

Overview of Bipedalism 2

• When our ancestors, during the Miocene, did come to the ground, bipedalism would give

them several advantages:

• Bipedal locomotion freed the hands for carrying objects and for making and using tools.

• Able to see predators more easily

• Maybe a vertical stance makes it easier to stay cooler (less of body in the away from the

heat radiating from the ground)

• Bipedal walking is an efficient means of covering long distances, and when large game

hunting came into play, further refinements in the locomotor complex may have been

favored.

• Bipedalism has been described as a teetering “on the edge of catastrophe”.

• During normal walking only for about 25% of the time are both feet on the ground.

• As we speed up, this percentage decreases.

• Maintaining a stable center of balance in this complex form of locomotion required a

significant remodeling of the basic quadrupedal locomotion pattern:

1. The foot shifts to a source of stable support and away from a grasping appendage.

2. The weight of the stride strikes the heel and is pushed off from the toe.

3. The legs become elongated to lengthen the stride.

4. The knee becomes fully extended and the legs closer together.

5. The pelvis undergoes major changes so that it can support the weight of the upper body

by the lower body.

• During the 18 million years of the Miocene (23-5 mya) a great deal of evolutionary

activity took place.

• In Africa, Asia, and Europe, the diverse and highly successful hominoids emerged.

• There were many more hominoid forms during this time than there are now!

• Some call this the ‘golden age’ of the hominoids.

• Thousands of fossils have been found from dozens of sites in East Africa, southwest

Asia, western and southern Europe, and China.

• During the Miocene, the climate transformed as the landmasses repositioned.

• By 23 mya, major continental locations were quite similar to those we see today.

• Even so South and North Americas were separated.

• The Southern Plate had created the Himalayas

• South America & Australia had continued to migrate away from Antarctica

• The result was that the Miocene epoch was considerably warmer than it had been in the

Oligocene.

• Also, by 16 mya, the Arabian Plate had docked with northeastern Africa.

• Between 16 million and 15 million years ago, ape species thrived because the earth

warmed, leading to an expansion of tropical and subtropical conditions.

• Soon after 16 mya, African hominoids migrated out and colonized Asia. Later,

Europe.

Fossil apes of the Miocene

The fossil record shows that, before 7 million years ago, there were more than 100 different

species of apes, grouped into 40 genera.

• The Miocene hominoid fossils were 1) widely distributed, 2) were numerous, 3) spanned. a

significant part of the Miocene. Even so, they are poorly understood.

• Most of the fossils thus far discovered are so derived that they’re probably not ancestral to any

living form.

What happened all the many Miocene apes?

Climate change appears to explain the extinction of most Miocene apes.

• Tropical forests were being replaced with savannahs (large tracts of grasslands).

• This is evidenced by increased levels of 13C in the soils (grasses) as compared to lowered levels

of 13C in the tropics.

• Today, grass species are responsible for about 50% of photosynthesis in the tropics. Carbon

isotope analysis shows that at about 10 million years ago, during the Miocene, grass species

were responsible for 1% percentage of photosynthesis in the tropics.

Today, there are only 3 genera of great apes, and 1 genus of lesser apes.

In the history of the earth, extinction is extremely common.

We need to remember that 99% of all species that have ever existed have become extinct.

• According to PBS, rates of extinction are estimated to be 1/million/year (10-100 per year).

• The rate has increased to about 27,000 species/year in the Anthropocene.

The geological eras are separated by major extinction events.

Mammals tend to have a species lifespan of about 1 million years, (PBS).

The characteristic possessed by our ancestors that enabled them to survive the dislocations wrought

by the shrinking forest habitat at the end of the Miocene was their ability to walk bipedally.

Sahelanthropus, Orrorin, and Ardipithecus are among the candidates for the designation “oldest

hominin,” all dating to about 6 million years ago.

Sahelanthropus tchadensis (nickname: Toumai)

Central Africa (Toros-Menalla) In 2001, in northern Chad, they found Sahelanthropus

tchadensis. It dates to 7-6 mya.

Two specimens have been found: 1) cranium and 2) dental and mandibular fragments

From these one can see that the face is smallish.

The angle between a line joining the top and bottom of each of Toumai's eye orbits and a

line drawn at the base of its cranium is perpendicular, just like in modern human beings

The braincase is small (320-380 cm3), but CT scans of the cranium shows great similarity to

hominins.

Further, the position of the foramen magnum suggests bipedalism.

It is massively built, with huge brow ridges, a crest on top and large muscle attachments.

Orrorin tugenensis

East Africa; where are 2 areas of east Africa that contain significant early hominin fossils

The first is in the Tugen Hills area of central Ethiopia.

The second is the Middle Awash area of northeastern Ethiopia.

The earliest of these finds dates to about 6 mya and is found in the Tugen Hills -- Orrorin

tugenensis

The fossils consist of some dental remains and almost complete leg bones.

The leg bones (3 femurs) indicate full obligate bipedalism.

Ardipithecus

A. kabada (5.8-5.2 mya)

• Most are bits and pieces of individuals.

• This group is tentatively being labeled as Ardipithecus.

• From the phalanx (toe bone) suggestion that this species was a well-adapted biped

A. ramidus (dates more to 4.4 mya) and found at Aramis. (nickname: Ardi)

• At Awash River, Aramis, is a later group (36 individuals) dated to around 4.4 mya.

• One important observation of the environment for these species is that: They are NOT found in

savannah grasslands; the environment was more heavily forested.

• Major announcement in 2009: There was a reconstruction of A. ramidus that took 15 years.

• It is a female, had an estimated cranial capacity of 300-350 cm3, was about 4 feet and

weighed 110 pounds.

• Discoverers suggest it was a competent biped. Others suggest it could walk well, but could

not run well due to retention of some primitive traits.

• Foot was divergent and so good grasper.

• Some even go so far, due to the primitive traits, to challenge if this is a hominin.

• White et al. suggested the following about Ardi:

1. It is a creature at the base of the hominin line.

2. Sahelanthropus and Orrorin are probably other species of the same genus, Ardipithecus

3. Ardi and her kind likely spent as much time in the trees as on the ground.

4. Ardipithecus was NOT found in savannah grasslands; the environment was more heavily

forested.

5. Ardipithecus likely evolved into the earliest Australopithecus species.

• In May, 2017 a stunning announcement in the online

journal, Plos ONE: Hominin fossils were found in Europe.

• Actually, the first find was in 1944. A lower jaw was

found in Pyrgos Vassilissis, Greece.

• The more recently discovered find was found in Bulgaria:

an upper premolar.

• They date to approximately 7.2 mya.

• The nickname of this species is “El Graeco”; its

scientific name is Graecopithecus freybergi.

• What is so stunning?

• The researchers are suggesting that the ape-human split

occurred in the eastern Mediterranean and not in

Africa.

• They base their interpretation primarily on a hominin

characteristic noted in the lower molars: partially

fused roots (apes have 2-3 separate roots).

• Critique: Little data to date, and not enough research to

reach this conclusion.

The genus Australopithecus

By 4.2 million years ago, Australopithecus anamensis (from anam (lake) in Turkana language)

certainly was upright and may have been ancestral to all later forms of hominins.

• Found at two sites in Kenya, they consist of some pieces of post-crania, jaw fragments and

teeth.

• Facial features are ape-like but an upper arm bone is more human-like, as are both ends of a

tibia.

The period of the Middle Pliocene (3-6-3.2 mya) represents an expansion of hominin “bush”.

• Among the new species: Australopithecus bahrelghazali, A. promethecus (Little Foot), and

Kenyanthropus platyops. The newest is A. deyiremeda

• What does this all mean?

• Option 1: There were a number of contemporaneous, distinct hominins all residing in east

and south Africa

• Option 2: The splitters are making mistakes, given the fragmentary nature of the fossil record.

Australopithecus afarensis (from Afar Triangle, Ethiopia) (nickname: Lucy)

Australopithecus afarensis is so important because it provides the most extensive fossil evidence of

the early hominins.

Among these is the famous Lucy skeleton in 1974 (Australopithecus afarensis)

• The Laetoli footprints (discovered in 1978, dating to 3.7-3.5 mya) found in volcanic ash (A.

afarensis); literally thousands of prints found there of many species

• A 75-foot trail of hominin footprints (2-3 persons) called the Laetoli footprints

• The impressions verify bipedalism, but of a different kind. Their stride, cadence and speed of

walking were different.

The First Hominins 4 Australopithecus afarensis (continued)

1. More on Lucy.

• Named after the Beatles song, Lucy in the sky with diamonds (LSD)

• Lucy was quite short (3.5 feet) female with what some call significant sexual

dimorphism.

• She was 40% complete, including many key fragments that gave clues to

bipedal locomotion.

• At the time of her discovery (along with the Laetoli footprints) the date of

first bipedalism was moved back by at least 1 million years or more.

2. The next year, 1975, the “First Family” was found; 9 adults and 4 children.

3. New find announced in 2006 of an infant skeleton

• This is the first infant skeleton found to be older than 100,000 years.(dates to

3-3-3.2 mya).

• Found at Dikika in NE Ethiopia and nicknamed Selam is estimated age as 3

years

• “Mixed” pattern of locomotion; skeleton is very similar to that of an adult.

4. In 2010, Big Man was found, also about 40% preserved.

• It dates to 3.6 mya was found at Woranso-Mille, north of Hadar.

• Represents the partial skeleton of a male.

• These specimens confirm that sexual dimorphism was present and that the locomotion pattern was

mixture of terrestrial and ability to move in trees (but not strictly arboreal form of locomotion). Think

transitional form.

• Dental arch is parabolic (human-like), but both the prognathism and the diastema are ape-like.

• Following 3.5 mya, hominins became more diverse in Africa. Three were actually 3 separate

lineages of hominins living between 2.0-1.2 mya (Paranthropus, Australopithecus, and Homo)

• Paranthropus

Paranthropus, the most derived australopiths, is a hominin genus characterized by very large

back teeth, deep lower jaws and skull alterations that include a sagittal crest and dished in

face with large cheekbones (zygomatic arch) (all adaptations to heavy chewing)

The rest of their bodies were not that large; they were bipedal and had small brains.

There are three species are the “robust forms”

• Paranthropus aethiopicus is named for Ethiopia. Most famous is the ‘Black Skull’ found at

Lake Turkana, Kenya

• Dates to 2.5 mya, has a cranial capacity of 410 cm3, and is similar to A. afarensis in

traits

• Suggested intermediary between A. afarensis and the later Paranthropus species

• Paranthropus boisei (2.3-1.2 mya) is found in Omo, Ethiopia and Olduvai Gorge, Named

after Charles Boise (funded the excavation).

• Formerly named Zinjanthropus boisei

• Cranial capacity closer to 510-530 cm3 and facial features are still large and broad

• Paranthropus robustus is found in South Africa (2.0-1.2 mya), first by Robert Broom

• Dentition not as robust as E. African members of this clade.

• Some suggest that Australopithecus robustus is a regional variant of Australopithecus

boisei.

• Australopithecus africanus (southern ape of Africa) (2.5-1.0 mya)

• Raymond Dart (an anatomist) received an endocast (a solid impression of

the inside of the skull) from a site called Taung. Some of the facial bones

were also recovered.

• This became known as the famous Taung baby (or Taung child). The

estimated age of this fossil is 3-4 years (based on tooth eruption

pattern).

• He published about this first hominin to be discovered, saying that:

• The foramen magnum is further forward than for modern apes, but

not as much as modern humans

• Forehead less receding.

• Milk canines were smaller & the new permanent molars were larger,

though.

• But the brain was quite small. Estimate of its adult size at 440 cm3.

If you adjust for body size the bonobo is a good comparison.

• Only later was his discovery well accepted. During much of his own

lifetime his interpretation was dismissed.

• After Dart published, Robert Broom became his advocate and did research

that spanned the 1920s and 1930s.

• Broom explored limestone quarries at Sterkfontein (near Johannesburg)

• Broom went on to work at Swartkrans, where 2 additional hominin

sites are located.

• Australopithecus sediba (welspring/fountain in local

Sotho language, ~2 mya)

In 2008 two partial skeletons were discovered at

Malapa Cave by Lee Berger. This is a great story

and a significant find.

• This is what I call the story of a “boy and his

dog”.

• Berger took them with him when looking for

fossils, and his son first saw the fossil on the

right (of course this picture represents months

of cleaning away of the encapsulating stone. Skull of A. sediba

• In July 2012, another specimen was found (may be most complete skeleton every).

• This has been given a new species name as it is a mixture of australopithecine and Homo

features.

• Both arboreal and bipedal, Short fingers long arms and curved fingers, and more

primitive feet.

• Cranial capacity is estimated at 420 cm3, brain reorganization. Many suggest transition

species to Homo line.

Tool Making

At one time anthropology defined humans as the only toolmakers.

The Jane Goodall discovered chimpanzees altering twigs to go

“termite hunting”.

Many other observations were subsequently noted; most recently

a tribe of chimps makes and uses spears to hunt bush babies.

When is the earliest archaeological evidence for tool-making?

Originally, we named this as the Lower Paleolithic Period,

thinking it tool-making began around 2.6 mya and end about

200,000 years ago (ya).

• Two major stone tool industries:

• Oldowan: Hominin tools named for Olduvai Gorge,

Tanzania.

• Tools made by hard hammer percussion (also called

“direct percussion”).

• Assemblages consist mostly of core forms: Choppers &

cores, flakes, and hammerstones.

• Oldowan tools most likely used to process gathered and

scavenged foods, less likely a hunting tradition

• Acheulian (or Acheulean): begins around 1.4 mya

Date of first tool use is pushed back to 3.39 mya by the find of

bones with cut marks at Dikika, Ethiopia.

• The site is called Lowekwi 3. Most likely use was one of the

australopiths.

• Update: They found the Dikika tools (May 2015).

A Different Path: Homo 1

• Around 2.5 million years ago, an environmental change in Africa sparked by worldwide cooling

induced a burst of evolution in the hominin family.

• A number of varied species branched off from Australopithecus afarensis after this time.

• One branch, Homo habilis, had a brain size larger than any ape’s. With its larger brain, Homo

habilis was able to produce the first stone tools—simple but revealing a level of planning and

forethought that reflects the great intelligence of this first member of our genus.

• Homo habilis (“handy man”)

• At both Koobi Fora and at Oludvai is another set of fossil discoveries that differ from the

australopithecines.

• The discoveries from central Kenya and from the Hadar area of Ethiopia suggest they are as

old as 2.3 mya. Still trying to piece this together.

• One issue today is that there may be more than one species. The textbook avoids this debate

by using the term “early Homo”.

• The cranial size averages 631 cm3, as compared to the average for the robust forms at 520 cm3

• There are also differences in tooth proportions and cranial shape.

• The Leakeys argued it was a tool user and also that it co-existed with some of the

australopiths (a controversial idea in its day).

• At Lake Turkana, newer discovered specimens suggest an even larger cranial capacity (775

cm3), more gracile bone structure and a survival date to about 1.44 mya.

• This means it co-existed with Homo erectus.

• FYI: Many researchers believe the Turkana finds are a different species: H. rudolfensis.

Lightening Does Strike Twice!

• Remember Lee Berger finding of Australopithecus

sediba?

• This was a once-in-a-lifetime event. Except it wasn’t.

• He found a second species in 2013: Homo naledi at

Rising Star Cave, South Africa.

• The entry into the cave was so narrow, they

advertised for petite spelunkers.

• In total (to date) 15 partial skeletons were found

(1,413 bones and 137 teeth).

• In 2017, the date range was assigned: 236-335 kya.

• Differences in anatomy:

• Most striking is the smaller brain size (~500 cm3, at

the same time humans co-existed with large brains.

• Pelvis and shoulders are primitive.

• The hands were human-like, but the fingers are more

curved (tree climbing adaptation).

• Similarities in anatomy:

• Feet are adapted to bipedalism.

• Teeth are smaller.

• The shape of the skull is human-like.

Why Bipedalism?

John Ray, in 1691, suggested bipedalism has advantages. We listed a few earlier, but now let’s add

more details.

The upright provider (aka the provisioning hypothesis):

• Owen Lovejoy (1981) suggested it freed up the hands of males so they could bring back

provisions to females and their offspring.

• Lovejoy added that by practicing monogamy females ensured the males would make this

investment.

• Problem: What about the “sneaky female”?

The upright scavenger

• Pat Shipman (1984) suggested that bipedalism is an advantage for scavenging.

• She noted that, under the microscope, sometimes tools marks overlay carnivore marks and

sometimes its was the other way around.

• So, free hands allowed for walking long distances, looking for dead prey.

The endurance runner

• Bramble and Lieberman (2004) suggested that humans make great runners, not fast, but slow and

steady.

• Are tendons have a different arrangement than seen in chimps.

• The gluteus maximus becomes important as an extensor muscle (for pulling the thigh back

during running, jumping and climbing)

• We have skeletal adaptations that allow us to take the beating of downward forces.

• Research into endurance hunting (also called persistence hunting) has been a focus.

• Recent research suggests humans are more efficient running barefoot. Look at these shoes.

In humans the foramen magnum is repositioned

farther underneath the skull, so the head is more or

less balanced on the spine (and requires less robust

neck muscles to hold the head upright).

Support (Spine and Feet)

The spine has two distinctive curves

(called lordosis) —a backward (thoracic)

one and a forward (lumbar) one—that

keep the trunk (and weight) centered

above the pelvis.

One risk of human spine is lumbar

hyperlodosis (swayback)

The big toe is enlarged and brought in line with

the other toes; in addition, a distinctive

longitudinal arch forms, helping absorb shock

and adding propulsive spring.

Changes in Body Proportions

Percentages refer to degree of body height allocated to each

region. Lower limbs are elongated, as shown by the proportional
