, Thoughts from the Principal As we prepare to turn our calendars to Febru- ary, many of us will spot Valentines Day and think of things normally associated with the holi- day. As you can imagine, this holiday tends to cause a fair amount of activity at a school. Over- all, I have a weakness for Valentines Day, espe- cially in the elementary, as it usually has nothing to do with romance and everything to do with giving a card, candy, or note saying be mineto a friend, buddy, etc. There arent that many days when society goes out of its way to be extra nice or kind, so I truly appreciate that Valentines Day brings out positive acts from us. In todays frenzied digital life, it is easy to forget to acknowledge the goodness in those around us. So this Valentines Day, I invite you to not just post something on Facebook, but to go out of your way to do something nice for those around you. DRIVER EDUCATION CLASS in Sargent this summer!

Families can sign up their student to take a Driver Ed class in Sargent this summer!

The class will be taught by instructors through the Nebraska Safety Center.

The Driver Education Class taught through the Safety Center is an in-depth course

with the majority of the coursework done at Sargent and one day at the driving range

in Kearney. If your student is under 18 years of age, passing the course results in

waiver of the written and drive test at the driving examiner office. This course con-

forms to the rules and regulations of the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles

and exceeds the criteria established for insurance discounts. This summer’s classes

will be held in early July, but I haven’t received a confirmation date yet. Scheduling for

on-street driving and testing will be arranged at the mutual convenience of the stu-

dents and instructor and will be conducted in the local area. The fee for the course

will be around $330. The Safety Center does require that the students have a school

or learners permit for the driving portion of the class.

Scholarship News!

Previous graduates of Sargent High School have the option of applying for a new source of

funding as they further their education. The Everhart Family Sargent High School Scholarship is

for graduates of Sargent High School that have completed at least one year of college and will be

enrolled as a fulltime student. The scholarship was created in memory of Harold and Mary Jose-

phine (Jo) Everhart. It will be awarded to a Sargent graduate who shows drive, determination and

strong character. The scholarship provides (one) $1500 per semester for a total of $3000 per year

paid directly to the school. The scholarship maybe applied for yearly and past winners are eligible

to reapply. Applications are due April 1st and the winner will be notified by May 1st. Any ques-

tions about the application may be directed to Kristin Slagle. The application is available either as

a fillable form or as a pdf on the Sargent Public School website under the Bulldog Education

Foundation tabs or on Mrs. Schauda’s scholarship page. This scholarship could make a big differ-

ence for some deserving students and we are thankful to the Everhart Family for the opportunity

given to the graduates of Sargent High School.

ACT & SAT - College Entrance Exams

The ACT and SAT are exams that students take as part of the admissions process into most 4 year colleges

and Universities. The ACT is accepted at almost all colleges in the United States while the SAT is preferred

by some schools on the east and west coast. We recommend that students interested in attending a 4 year

college or University take the exam at least twice, once in the spring of their junior year and once in the fall

of their senior year. You can register on-line for the ACT at www.actstudent.org. To register for the SAT

go to www.collegeboard.com. To register for either test you will need the high school code 282-090. You

will find the test dates and registration deadlines listed below.

5th Annual Career Exploration Day December 21st was the 5th annual career day that has been hosted at Sargent Public Schools

for Sargent and Loup County 7th – 12th grade students. This day has been an opportunity for students

to explore various careers and gather information about those careers that interest them. This year we

were able to bring in about 16-18 different speakers to share about the path they took to get to where they are today. We also had 10 businesses and colleges for students to glean information from about

colleges and career opportunities.

Students had the opportunity to select three breakout sessions on various career speakers of their choosing. There was a broad range of options for them to choose from. The students selected speak-

ers with careers in business management, education, agri-business, occupational therapy, physical

therapy, machinist, taxidermy, physicians assistant, law enforcement, audio and video technology,

hunting guide, and lawyer. The students had a 4th -40 minute session to be in the the gym to talk to college representatives and businesses that shared information about their programs and career op-

portunities they can provide. Western Nebraska Community College kept many students engaged

with their aviation repair program who brought a mock jet engine and their information technolo-

gy/robotics program and brought several robots for the students to try out.

The day ended with our keynote speaker, Ken Waters, who encouraged the students to work hard to

achieve their goals. He also helped do some mock interviews with our seniors so they could gain ex-

perience interviewing. The day was a success with all our students being exposed to career options

and many of them making connections for future opportunities.

Ken Waters speaks about working

hard to achieve your goals.

The Art Department did a great job at the MNAC Art Show this year. We had students place and quite a few students get Honorable Mentions! A big Congrat-ulations goes to Quade Young for receiving 1st place in Printmaking for his “Deer in the Trees” print. His print will be on display at the Wild Rose Gallery in Broken Bow, February 12th through March 3rd. Other students that placed are Shawn Quandt for his “Deer” print (5th), Tera Horky for her “Magazine Vase” (2nd), Elijah Conner for his “Mag. Vase” (4th), and Nolan Osborn for his “Sour Patch Kids” painting (4th). Students receiving Honorable Mentions in-clude Natalie Decker for her “To Be or Not To Be” print, Ethan Niles for his “Blue TeaPot”, Abby O’Conner for her “Dragon”, Andrea Maldonado for her “Big Blue Whale” watercolor, Miles Putnam for his “TL Wolves” digital media, Garett Schneider for his “Mountains” dot art, Elsie Ottun for her “Sailing” dot art, and Vivi-an Slagle for her “Twix” paint-ing. I am very happy with how all the students art projects did espe-cially after seeing all the competi-tion we were up against! The stu-dents art will be up in the hall by the music room for everyone to view. It would be great for every-one to make it to the Wild Rose Gallery in Broken Bow February 12th-March 3rd to see the other works from the MNAC Art Show. Good Job to everyone that took work! Mrs. Smith
