The Unholiest of Lies

It’s happened before, and I’m sure it will happen again. Rosie Ruiz made it famous a few years ago by doing it. Of course you know I'm talking about cheating in a marathon. In this year’s running of the Mardi Gras Marathon I saw it for the first time and it was quite a sight. Less than three and one-half hours into the race, a runner came charging in from the distance like a bull elephant, passing several runners in the last 50 yards like they were standing still. At first I was shocked and amazed. Here was a guy looking to be over 250 pounds with rolls-a-bouncing, having run 26.2 sub 8 minute miles, blowing through the finish line like he was finishing a 440yd race. And then it hit us as he grabbed a Finishers Medal and zipped out of the chutes, he probably had just finished a 440yd race.

As runners came in and confirmed our suspicions, the runner in question was promptly disqualified and discussion soon centered on what could possibly be the motivation for such an act. At least Rosie had the lure of thousands of dollars and fame for her stunt. Yet what riches were to be had this runner? A finishers Medal? A postcard with his name and time? Any real runner would know better when presented the claim, and most non-runners simply don’t care.

For the average runner the marathon remains the ultimate test. The hundreds of miles of training, the early mornings and late nights, and the sacrifice of many hours make for a heavy investment. For all this work we are given the chance to attempt 26.2 miles. For those that are successful the Postcards and Medals are meerly reminders that can be lost, stolen or thrown away. But the accomplishment will be there forever.

Many thanks to the Footprints staff, Rick Lusky, Dean Songy, and Frank LeBlanc, who have been working double duty to get both the Grand Prix booklet and this issue out to press on time.

Decembers Larry Fuselier 25K and The WALL-15K and 30K offered new courses on Lakeshore Drive. While the 25K field was larger, the 15K/30K field nearly doubled last years.

Thanks in part to WNOL Fox 38, Nautilus and Coca-Cola. FOX 38 ran numerous commercials for the race.

The Celebration in the Oaks is now New Orleans’ third largest roadrace with over 4500 entrants. A fabulous time was had by all in City Park under the lights..thanks a lot to Race Chairman RICK LUSKY.

Congratulations also to Chip Marz in directing a very successful Mardi Gras Ultradistance 100 miler and 50K.

The Camellia City Classic on Febr 27th, Run on the Bayou on March 6th (Saturday) and the March 14th Dial- One/CrimeStoppers Run over Crime races all offer lOK’s and qualifying for the CCC. The CrimeStoppers has a random prize trip to New York City with accomodations.

Make plans now for the Pensacola FIESTA RUN weekend. The NOTC official hotel is the Best Western/Pensacola Beach, call them at 904-934-3300 and mention that you are an NOTC member to get the discount.

Members needing informational on regional/national marathons or other major races might call me first before calling the listed race. I usually receive several copies of major roadrace entry forms and keep them on file.

Call me at 468-1488.

Julie Boudreaux Beginning a New Tradition:

By: Dean Songy"to do something very common, in my own way"

The above line from a poem by Adrienne Rich, spokesperson for the contemporary woman, in many ways targets Julie’s approach to her position as Track Club President. She has no intentions of surging forward with radical ideas, nor dfoes she intend to deviate much from the Track Club’s steady course of success."I have no set thing that I really want to do except help carry on its level of excellence," said Julie. "The Track Club is a good club . . . and I want it to continue to put on good quality races."Being the first female president of this organization was not that remarkable for Julie since she feels that "women have long been very active in the club and many of them are fully capable of serving as president." In fact, she would like to see more women become involved in the club, in its management and in its operation.Sne referred to the 2,000 plus members in the Track Club, the largest it’s been since its inception. "And in this increase, the most impressive has been in the racewalking division," she adds. Also, "more families have been joining the organization and fully participating in its events."'This is not just a fitness thing," asserts

Julie. People are participating because the club has something good to

offer, something for the individual as well as the family. "We really don’t go out and recruit individuals," comments Julie, "word of mouth about the quality and accuracy of our roadraces gets around and so people want to join.""The Grand Prix, for example, sells the Track Club," continues Julie, "since you don’t have to be fast, just be consistent." She added that the club gives the runner "variety," a variety of routes and a variety of distances. "We’ve been thinking about sponsoring some events in Mandeville since m ore people are m oving on the Northshore," she continued. Julie and her husband, Bob, are both very familiar with the Mandeville environment since they wake up each weekday morning tor what she refers to as the "reverse commute," the long drive across the lake. She is the supervisor of the adolescent unit at a mental hospital in Mandeville. At the end of a long day, however, she prefers to meet friends at Metairie Playground where she does most of her training. She refers to her speedwork sessions there as slow "circles," around the track."In November I'll hit the master’s division," Julie murmured, "and I want to get back in shape." Coming off of a long injury, she seems very positive about running. "I had a good race today," she smiled, putting in a total of 20 miles, 7 miles before the half-mar- athon. If her training stays strong, she plans to head to Pensacola for the Blue Angels Marathon this February.Julie added that she does her "long runs with the 5:20 group on Saturdays," admitting that group running offers a tremendous amount of support to the runner. Then the thought of club sponsored training runs, either for speed or for distance, entered her mind as a possibility. Would the members be receptive to it? Could the club recruit some local elite runners who would be willing to have a following of eager neophytes and diehard veterans? Is this idea another way the Track Club could reach out to its members?Runners learn best from other runners. Together, the fast and the slow, the young and the old, all have something to gain. The race then becomes the test. By offering a variety of training programs, the Track Club then becomes a full service organization, willing to train in distance and in

speed, and then offering a variety of events in which the runner could put this newly-acquired knowledge to the test.If there is an interest for club sponsored training, the members need to "speak out," asserts Julie, who is more than willing to listen to the voice of the membership. At this point, every effort is being made to enhance the Track Club events by strengthening overall media coverage, by improving course routes, such as the shortening of the section along Lakeshore Drive in the Mardi Gras Marathon, and by acquiring corporate sponsors. She really has no specific plans to run again for president since she flatly stated that such a position requires "a great deal of time" and patience in "dealing with people.""I know of a lot or women who would be willing and qualified to run for this office," admitted Julie. Perhaps her willingness to offer another woman a chance to lead the club reveals that she has the best interest of the club at heart. Julie has a very positive outlook on the club’s position in the community. Over the last few years, this nonprofit organization has steadily grown, and she does not want to toy with its success. Then what Julie does that’s "very common" is to carry on the tradition of the Track Club, to provide leadership and enthusiasm in an organization that promotes fitness and fun, and to do it, as Julie might say, "in my own way."

Audubon Park, New Orleans.

With near perfect weather and cool temperatures, the 1992 Crescent City Fall Classic saw some of the fastest 5K times run in the City this year. In addition to the fast times, this was one of the deepest fields ever assembled for a local 5K with an incredible 400 runners going under 22 minutes. At stake this year, for the first time, runners could qualify for the C.C.C. 10K at a distance shorter than 9 kilometers. This was not lost on local runners as a record number lined up for a shot at the coveted seeded numbers. The men’s division came down to a sprint finish as Joe Manual took the lead inthe final few hundred yards to win in 14:40. Second place Desmond O’Connor was one second back after leading for most of the race, with Bill Hammarstrom in third. In the women’s race, Lisa Presedo ran away from the rest of the field to win in 16:38. Pam Williams posted another sub 18:00 performance to take second with Gretchen Vonhoff coming in third. The top Master’s runners were Yassine Belaabed with a 17:03, and Rachael Barbee in 18:40 , who placed fourth overall in the womens division.

Grand Prix 1993 Results - "They Fought to the Finish"by Dean Songy

Now 5 years old, the Grand Prix is still growing strong. It is perhaps the single most popular and exciting event sponsored by the Track Club since it encompasses all age groups, both male and female, runners, and walkers alike. It is designed to recognize those club members who consistently participate in club races, and who perform well in those races. However, you need not be "fast" to win, just simply consistent and frequent. If you missed out in '92, begin now by planning to run or walk as many Grand Prix events as humanly possible; then work on doing your best in each event. Amazingly, the points begin to add up quickly. Also by being so consistent, your finish times may begin to drop and your level of performance may begin to rise. Read about these winners, for example!

In the women’s walking division, ages 18-39, Bonnie McAfee (age 37) clearly outdistanced her competition. After losing last year by only 60 points, she concentrated more on her technique. "I was determined to take an early lead," confirmed Bonnie. As a result of her consistency, she admits to seeing an improvement in her training as well as in her racewalking.

Whereas Karren Kloiber, winner in the walker division, ages 40-49, had no intention of fighting for the lead this year, especially since she had won in 1990. However, about halfway through the Grand Prix race schedule when she realized how close she was, she jumped back into the competition. Determined not to miss a single Grand Prix event, she raced Old Man River, even though she had just recently returned from the Chicago Marathon where she racewalked the course in 5 and 1/2 hours. "I went all out when I realized I could win," Karren flatly admits, adding that "I’ll surely do it again next year."WATCH OUT LADIES!

In the remaining walker’s division, the dynamic duo of Mike and Irene Adams (both 50-59) captured first place. The tightest competition was in the men’s 40-49 division as Oliver Dailey edged by Denis Beer for first place.

The biggest upset this year, however, occurred in the men’s 40-49 division of the Runner’s Grand Prix. Brendan Minihan relinquished his first place title, a position he has held since 1988, to Boom Belcouche, an instructor in the Computer Science Department at Tulane University. "I’m actually having a bad year," Boom disgustingly asserts, although quite pleased with his winning position. ""I even had to drop out of the Mardi Gras Marathon at the 18 mile point." Normally a 36 minute 10K runner, Boom is not sure of his participation in the 1993 Grand Prix events. "It all depends on my hip and if it feels better," remarked Boom. I think he wants to keep this competitive field guessing and on their toes.

Another tight field and a major upset was in the men’s 18-39 division where Darrell Revok ousted long-time winner Eugene Dedeaux. "The key to success," admits Darrell "is to get right on it." This strategy gave him an early lead over the others, such as Desmond O’Connor who, according to Darrell, "got started too late."

Speaking of close points, check the tight squeeze between first and second position in the men’s 60 & over category. Congratulations to Bill Reeves for his persistence and to Henry Gaudet for his strong effort.

This same excitement and hot competition continues in the women’s categories. The closest set of points was between Janel Mumme with 1190 and Lori Stevens with 1090 in the 18-39 category. Janel admitted being caught in the middle of her triathalon season when she realized how close she was to first place. For her, that was enough of an incentive to keep her momentum moving.

Although Rachel Barbee missed 4 Grand Prix events, she clinched her title in the 40-49 category quite easily. She thinks the Grand Prix is a great way to generate involvement in the club and plans to participate again actively next year. "I've only been running for 2 years," she admits, and now can’t wait for the 1993 Grand Prix season to begin.

These first place winners will receive jackets displaying the multi-colored Track Club logo. All second and third place positions will receive a unique plaque. These awards are given to both runners and walkers, men and women in their separate categories. Trophies are also given to those runners finishing in fourth and fifth place to recognize their accomplishment.

Now that the results are in, set your sights on the Elmwood Classic, the first Grand Prix event of 1993. Many members who participated in the 1992 Grand Prix remarked that "racing" kept them fine-tuned and in excellent shape. The Grand Prix events are spaced evenly enough so that you are able to do your best. With about 15 Grand Prix races you can easily mix your racing with your training. Remember, the race is the test, so do your best! See you on the roads in ’93!

NEW ORLEANS TRACK CLUB "GRAND PRIX" RULES

PURPOSE. In 1988, the New Orleans Track Club started its New Orleans "Grand Prix". This program is designed to recognize those clubmembers who have consistently participated in Club events and have performed well in these events throughout the year. At the beginning of each year an announcement is made detailing the current year’s Grand Prix Program. For designated "Grand Prix" events, in addition to the race awards, points are tallied for clubmembers. At the end of the calendar year, "Road Runner of the Year" Awards are presented at the Club’s General Membership Meeting.

DIVISIONS. Initially, in 1988, the Grand Prix Program was established for runners. In 1989, a "Youth" Grand Prix Program was added to recognize the efforts of the kids and to encourage more family participalion in NOTC events. And finally, in 1990, a Grand Prix Program was developed for Walkers.

SCORING. Points are awarded to each clubmember based on their place in each event in the races which have been designated as Grand Prix events. Over the years, at the request of Clubmembers, the method of awarding points (a double point system) has been adopted to take into account the events that have both long and short race distances.

EVENTS. The results of selected Club events which are held within an approved period (usually beginning in February and ending in early December) are included in the Grand Prix Programs. The events to be included in the Grand Prix are selected at the Board’s Scheduling Committee Meeting.

TIE-BREAKING RULES. When the Grand Prix was established in 1988, a set of tie-breaking rules were adopted in the event that more than one clubmember accumulated the same number of points throughout the year, the following rules would be followed (in order) to determine the winner of the Road Runner of the Year Award.

1) If two or more clubmembers accumulate the same number of total points, the member scoring in the most events would be the winner.

2) If two or more clubmembers score in the same number of events, the member having the better,(lower) place total would be the winner. —(ie. 2 First Place (2x1), 2 Second Place (2x2), 2 Third

Place (2x3),and 2 Fourth Places (2x4) equals a Place Total of 20.)

3) If two or more clubmembers have duplicate place totals, the member with the most 1st place finishes (or 2nd places, etc.) would be the winner.

Keith Iovine, former Rummel High/Universify of Arkansas track standout swept into town and took part in the 16th Annual LARRY FUSELIER 25K State Championship which was held on the Lakefront in NO. Mild temperatures and a heavy headwind on the eastbound legs of the Lakeshore Drive double loop course from Shelter Bldg-1, made for slow times overall. Also compounding things was a mathematical error by the Race Director which made the first mile (and thus the entire distance) exactly 107 yards long. But as was said by many of the runners the headwind added much more than that!Keith ran in a group with Darrell Revok, Bobby Dannelley and Bryan Smith for the first loop and blazed away all alone for the second loop several minutes quicker in winning in a time of 1:27:57. Revok took second at 1:28:57 and Smith third at 1:35:07. Biloxi’s Bobby Dannelley (age 50) was the top masters finisher at 1:35:21.Laura Guerrero’s 1:46:25 was the time for the overall womens title, she was followed by Susan Ary at 1:52:30 and Ginger Mason at 2:00:59.Mary Briners 2:14:00 took the masters award. Thanks to the following sponsors: Kentwood Spring Water, Elmer’s Chee-z-Snax, Chiquita Bananas, Sather's Candies, and Radiofone. Many thanks to our race volunteers: Karen Burgess, Don Brinkman, Benny Dupuy, Monica Wonycott, Gwen Lund, Carolyn Johnson, Pat and Jay Zamora, Rosalee Whiteman, Frank LeBlanc, Josie Lyons, Josie Gaille, Martha George, Ingrid James, Gloria Avila, Eliz.Van Battum, Mary Ann Louviere, Lori Burg, Louis Burg, Ray Kloiber, Karren Kloi- ber, Jerry Horn, Louis Horn, Lynn Wilder- man, Rick Wilderman, Benny Dupoy, Lucinda Hebert, Tara LeBlanc, Larry Lewis, Tim Jeansonne, Peter Cadoo, Frances Madary and Frank LeBlanc.

Recovery, Speed Work and Other Musings

of a Sports Chiropractor.

With the approach of every deadline, I try writing about a timely or frequently asked topic. For this issue, several suggestions have been made. So, allow me the luxury of trying something new and pardon me if 1 ramble.

Speed. Speed work doubles the amount of growth hormone levels in a runner’s blood. A University of Virginia researcher found that running fast boosted an athlete’s growth hormone naturally. What is growth hormone, and why do we care about it?

Growth hormone is secreted by the pituitary gland. It is a substance that our body uses to repair and build bone and muscle tissue for quicker recovery. Growth hormone also helps to break down fat for a greater lean body mass.

These beneficial results from growth can be gained by incorporating speed work into your training routine for about 8 months.

So doc how can I add this speed work to my routine you ask? Within a normal training run, add six 10-15 second bursts of speed followed by light jog

ging. Gradually increase these bursts to 30 seconds three times a week. If you do speedwork once a week, then add these pickups to two other training runs within the week.

Speedwork can cause problems when combined with high mileage or when added to a training program to quickly. Remember any adjustments to a training routine should be done gradually.

One last aspect about speed. Scientific studies show that total mileage is a better predicator of injury than training speed.

While doing research for this column, I came across the following formula for speed work. 15% of weekly mileage should be done at a 5K pace or faster. 15% at a 10 or 15K pace and 70% of your weekly mileage at an easy pace.

Rest. Every runner should incorporate rest or easy days i nto their training routines. If you are doing a lot of speed work, take 2 days off instead of one. You will not be able to progress as a runner if you are chronically fatigued. One to two days of rest is essential to any balanced training program. Constant training depletes your glycogen stores. If you run with muscles chronically drained of energy, you start to recruit different muscles. As a result, you stress bones and joints that had not been under stress. This

can greatly increase your risk of injury.

Taking an example from another sport, body builders rotate the body parts they work out to allow time for repair. Obviously, a runner cannot run on his hands, so a rest day is in order.

Nutrition. A few thoughts about nutrition. For every 1% increase of iron stored in your body, your risk of heart attack increases by 4%. Perhaps this explains why runners are healthier then our more sedentary peers. By running, we lose iron through sweat and waste. Give this a little thought next time you reach for your iron supplement. The iron RDA for women was recently lowered from 18 mg to 15 mg.

Runners generate and use a lot of 0 2(oxygen). It enhances our performance, but also breaks down body cells through oxidation. Studies with the antioxidants, vitamins C & E, show that one thousand milligrams of each versus a placebo, decreased this oxidative process. These vitamins can be found in oranges, broccoli, strawberries, whole grain breads, vegetable oils, red and green peppers.

I hope you have learned something from the above musings. If it wasn’t too disjointed for you, I will do a few more columns with this format.

On the morning of Saturday, December 19, 1992, there was not much cause to celebrate. First there was an early morning fog that gave way to a steady rain at noontime. But by 4:00pm, almost all of the over 4,500 entrants had gathered to participate in the 1992 edition, the 5th Anniversary, of the "Celebration in the Oaks Run/Walk" on what turned out to be a very pleasant evening.

For almost all of the participants, this event is non-competitive. This, of course, makes it very unique to the New Orleans roadracing community. But year after year, this event continues to draw a very competitive field of runners. So in 1992, the top 75 finishers (male and female) are listed (in alphabetical order) for your review. If you take the time to read the results, you'll find that the men’s leader was Desmond O’Conner, who completed the 2 Mile course in 9:30 flat - that’s 4:45 per mile! Pam Williams also posted an excellent time of I 1:25 in leading the women finishers. While congratulations are in order for all the runners, it was equally as rewarding to see so many clubmembers simply walking with their families.

Santa again made an appearance before the race. He handed out hundreds of Light Sticks (compliments of American Cynamid) to kids of all ages. This year’s event also marked the inauguration of a new pre-race feature, the LITE-105 Costume Contest. Over 105 prizes were given out on race day. Thank you, to everyone who costumed, but a special thanks to the staff of WLTS (Bob Mitcnel and Chris Bryant) who made this aspect of the race possible.

The staff of Swiss Miss and Standard Coffee Company again hosted a fabulous Post-Race Party. In addition to the hot chocolate and coffee, Kentwood served water and 10-K, the Keebler elves furnished cookies, and Sathers Candies contributed star-bursts mints for all to enjoy.

These sponsors provide both their product and an enthusiastic crew of volunteers who do a fantastic job helping to distribute the refreshments to one ana all. It was evident that everyone attending appreciated both the refreshments and the efforts of all the volunteers that make this race and the Post-Race Party possible.

Aspecial thanks to the management of City Park, The Botanical Garden, and the 1992 Celebration in the Oaks organizing committee for taking a more active role in promoting this year’s event. Their work, along with the cooperation of the Crescent City Classic, had a noticible effect on the financial results of the race. This year, Race Organizers were able to present them with a check for over $6,600.00.

On behalf of all the race organizers, sponsors, and volunteers, thank you participating in this year’s event, have a Happy New Year, and we look forward to seeing you at next year’s race.

The Wall, 12/20/92

Lakefront, New Orleans30K and 15K State Championship

A large field of over 300 turned out on the Lake Pontchartrain Lakeshore Drive course for the 14th Annual WALL-30 Kilometer State Championship.Warm weather had the early leaders of the race D arol T im berlake and Paul Waggenspack bowing out to finish the 15K race at 54:30 and 55:08. Baton Rouge’s GrandMasters Francis Ard took overall honors in the womens 15K with at 1:07:56.On the second of two 15K legs, Mark Kelly established a seemingly comfortable lead over Bryan Smith and the rest of the field. The regionally recognized triathlete faltered in the last few miles and was overtaken by Bryan Smith who went on to victory in a time of 1:55:03. Times were very slow due to very unseasonably warm weather. Alot of credit should go to the volunteers at the well managed and numerous water stations on the course. Mark took second at 1:55:47 and was followed closely by Dr. Pat who swept past several runners in the last few miles for third at 1:56:00.Carole Smith kept her womens overall title with a 2:06:07 time. Laura Guerrero and Yvonne Lee followed at 2:11:15 and 2:20:24. Rene De Latour pushed to a very fast 1:36:41 in the wheelchair division. Thanks to these volunteers: Karen Burgess, Don Brinkman, Benny Dupuy, Monica Wonycott, Gwen Lund, Carolyn Johnson, Pat and Jay Zamora, Rosalee Whiteman, Frank LeBlanc, Josie Lyons, Josie Gaille, Martha Georee, Ingrid James, Gloria Avila, Elisabeth Van Battum, Mary Ann Louviere, Lori Burg, Louis Burg, Ray Kloiber, Karren Kloiber, Jerry Horn, Louis Horn, Lynn Wilderman, Rick Wilderman, Benny Dupoy, Lucinda Hebert, Tara LeBlanc, Larry Lewis, Tim Jeansonne, Frances Madary, Leon Legendra, Linda Bauer, Ellis Bauer, Peter Cadoo.

Dallas UltraRunners/Plano Pacers 24/48 Hour Run

Nov 26-28,1992

NOTC's 73 year old Matt Miller sets WORLD RECORD (pending) of 142.92 Miles in 48 hours, placing 4th overall in the race. Also in the field was Chip Marz with a 121.54 mile total.

"How does it feel to set a world record Matt? Chip Marz, himself a seasoned ultra marathon runner, had pulled alongside me and was congratulating me on setting a new record. It was fitting that Chip would be there, he has been a mentor and has counseled me in running long distances. I owe a good deal to Chip and his coaching and encouragement."

SHOE CORNER

by Rick ElmoreHere are a few new models on the market to look at as you get ready for the Crescent City Classic.

ASICS GEL 121Sizes (M) 6-13: (W) 5-11 Retail: $70.00This shoe is a continuation of a style of shoe that has proven to do well with a large number of individuals. Starting from the bottom up, it has an outsole made of solid rubber in the heel for wear and an expanded rubber forefoot for more cushioning. The midsole is made of a two density E.V.A. (a lighter but durable rubber). The area under the arch is firmer to reduce over-pronation. Another added feature is a gel pad, exclusive to ASICS, for extra cushion to the heel. For the price, this line has proven it’s value many times over.

MIZUNO MONDO CLUBSizes (M) 6-1/2-13; (W) 5-11Mizuno is on the move. The largest manufacturer of sporting goods in the world has returned to the running market in the United States.

This particular shoe is designed for a walker/runner who is neutral. If you over-pronate, this shoe will not do the job you need. Yet if you have that type of foot that rolls outward, this could be the shoe for you. The outsole is made of solid rubber for wear. The forefoot has additional grooves for easy break-in. Your midsole is comprised of a single density E.V.A., an additional feature this shoe has is a item called a "Dynamic Heel Counter". It will provide added stability to the forefoot.
