February 2019
Last month, we learn about en-
gineered systems to combat
legionella. We had a large turn-
out to learn about the topic. In
addition, last month was the an-
nual Future City Competition
Philadelphia Region where mid-
dle schoolers (5, 6, 7, & 8 grad-
ers) are presented with a chal-
lenge to recover after a natural
disaster and mitigate damage of future disasters.
There are (41) Future City Competitions in Janu-
ary leading to the National Competition. I was
fortunate to attend this year’s Philadelphia Com-
petition and help select the winner of the ASPE
Philadelphia Chapter’s Plumbing Innovation
Award. The Philadelphia Region had (34) teams
to review in three hours. Talk about learning,
these young people started in October and fin-
ished in early January. Their projects covered
environment, power, transportation, and sustain-
ability. The ideas they came up with generating
power for wind, solar, reclamation, and water
(from waves, falling water, gravity river flow) is
amazing. There are other aspects of the compe-
tition that were considered such as historical
melding of old and new. These students had a
mentor to help with some of the concepts. The
winning school for the Plumbing Innovation
Award was Gritty City (city name) from Murray
Avenue School in Huntingdon Valley, PA.
I would like to challenge our membership to be a
mentor in the future competitions. Maybe start
out slow by helping judge a competition and
lead up to a mentor. This is case where we can
teach the youth of today to be engineers of to-
morrow and replace you, as we are not getting
any younger.

TECHNICAL CORNER One of the many benefits of being an ASPE member is receiving the updated Plumbing Engineer De-sign handbook. If your membership is in good standing, you should have received your updated Vol-ume 2 book in January. This volume outlines the engineer’s guide to system designs and specifications for “Plumbing Systems”. Currently, ASPE is searching for qualified engineers & designers to assist them in updating Volume 3 – “Special Plumbing Systems”. If you are interested in volunteering your time and expertise, please contact Gretchen Pienta ([email protected]). Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Upcoming events and topics for your review: Please note, that the 2019 CPD Exam has now been extended to three (3) days and will be taken on April 3 – 5. You must register by no later than Thursday, March 21st. Available to you is the CPD Review Manual with a practice exam and test-taking tips. You can order your copy at ASPE’s online store. Visit www.aspe.org/CPDExam for eligibility requirements and to register. A CPD review clas-
ses is being offered by the Philadelphia ASPE Chapter, please contact Mike Panco for additional details at [email protected]. Go to the www.aspe.org website today to register for ASPE’s upcoming webinars and workshops in our area: Medical Gas Design Workshop will be offered in Pittsburgh on February 27th; and Basic Plumbing Design II, a two (2) day workshop, will also be offered in Pittsburgh on February 28 – March 1st; Sprinkler Shop Drawings for compliance with NFPA13 will be conducted online on March 20th (www.aspe.org/shopdrawingswebinar).
ASME launches a new automated Standards Update Notifications system. Through the system, subscribers will be informed via email when an update to an ASME standard has been pub-lished. The system will not provide a copy of the standard, only notification that it has been updated. Users can sign up for specific standard at www.asme.org/shop/product-update-notifications.

LEGISLATIVE NEWS Two new standards have recently been made available for purchase: ASSE/IAPMO/
ANSI Series 6000-2018, “Professional Qualifications Standard for Medical Gas Systems
Personnel” and ASSE 1087-2018, “Performance Requirements for Commercial and
Food Service Water Treatment Equipment Utilizing Drinking Water.”
ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 6000-2018 addresses minimum requirements for medical
gas systems inspectors, verifiers, maintenance personnel and instructors, which are refer-
enced by regulatory officials to determine if personnel are qualified to work on piped
medical gas systems in their jurisdictions. The specialized disciplines covered in ASSE
Series 6000 are necessary to provide for all aspects involved in the installation, testing,
and maintenance of the piped medical gas/vacuum distribution systems that are installed
in health care facilities throughout the United States. The 2018 edition of ASSE Series 6000 parallels the med-
ical gas-related requirements of NFPA 99-2018, Health Care Facilities Code.
ASSE 1087's scope includes plumbed-in water treatment devices and components — point of entry and point of use — that are used in businesses, schools, churches, hotels and restaurants to improve the quality of the water. The standard covers all water treatment products that are connected to the building’s plumbing system
for potable water. Examples of water treatment equipment include deionizers, filters, softeners, reverse osmo-sis equipment, ultraviolet systems, ozone systems and distillers. The standard is not intended to cover products used for wastewater applications, process water or residential water treatment.

SPEAKING OUT
Steve Ziga
As your career travels along its path you will meet many, many people along the
way. Some will help you, some will hinder you. The same can be said for your
impact on their day-to-day lives. Your interactions will define you. What you say,
how you say it, goes a long way. Did you help someone in need? Did you ask
for someone’s help in a time of need? Are you honest in your daily life? Did you
give more than you took? Your character
defines you. It is something that will either
open doors or close doors personally and
professionally.
We’ve all seen those inspiration posters around offices that say things like
MOTIVATION, PURPOSE, TEAMWORK. They may be corny, but the truth is
that without having the characteristic of MOTIVATION our goals will not be
realized. Without PURPOSE we will live a life filled with questions and wrong
turns. Without TEAMWORK we will never realize the joy in accomplishing
something great with one another.
Organizations like ASPE are here to provide opportunities for professional
and personal growth. Enjoy fellowship at our dinner meetings. Increase
your knowledge at our technical sessions.
