Respectfully,

Nicholas R. JohnsenDirector of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation

I have gained a greater appreciation for the days and months that pass and their signifi -cance as I mature--a yo u n ge r p e r s o n might say I was sim-ply getting older. We celebrate Valentine’s Day in February and many of us that are married have memories of the day we proposed to our brides. My great-est memory is of selecting our wedding bands. On my break from West Point I was visiting my wife-to-be and we decided to utilize her employee discount to purchase our wedding bands our freshman year. It was a great deal around $120 for both bands. We proudly went to her home to show her parents the rings. Since we were high school sweethearts and we had told them that we had intended on getting married upon my graduation I figured there was little to be worried about. Boy did I misin-terpret that “understanding”. We got home just before dinner and proudly showed her parents the wedding bands and you could have heard a pin fall on their carpeted living room. Several long seconds went by until her Father asked me if I still intended to graduate from West Point and I told him absolutely as I could not be married while attending the Academy. They both sighed relief and went on with the dinner preparation. Little things in life sometimes carry more meaning than we know. Don’t let the little things in life go by without telling the ones you love how much they mean to you every day. Take a look at the opportunities within this edition of “Hood Happenings” to find the next great opportunity you don’t want to go by you this month!

Voices of the Great Place

The Proposal: Former “Single Ladies” tell how their husbands put a ring on it.

My husband, Randall proposed to me on his 30th birthday, as he stood in the doorway of my parent’s house with his hand in his pocket and said “I know that today is my birthday and I am not supposed to do this on my birthday, but you are my birthday wish. The moment I met you and every instance thereafter spent with you has been a celebration…. And I don’t want to celebrate another birthday without you”.

Sandra Pearl

I have always been outspoken while my husband is more reserved, but somehow we managed to be high school sweethearts and date all throughout college without a single breakup. A few weeks before our college graduation my husband told me that he wanted to join the Army and serve our country. I had never seen him look surer of himself, and I couldn’t have been more proud of his desire to serve. It was then that I realized he was the one, so I told him that he needed to marry me so that we can get this show on the road.

Millie Cooper

My husband, who was my boyfriend at the time, asked if I would like to meet him for a slice of our favorite cheesecake at lunch. I told him that I was about to go into a big meeting and couldn’t get away from my office. About 30 minutes later while in my meeting, my husband stormed in the room with a piece of cheese cake and a ring and exclaimed “You are the only person I know that is sweeter than cheesecake… Will you marry me?” I later found out that the whole office was in on the proposal and that the meeting was a set up.

hroughout America’s history, from the Battle of Lexington to the Battle for Fallujah, African Ameri-can Soldiers have honorably answered the call

to duty, serving with great valor and distinction in America’s Armed Forces. During the month of February, Fort Hood cele-brates and pays tribute to African American Soldiers and recognizes their important contributions. In today’s busy world children, as well as adults, are becoming detached from history. Many only learn what small amounts can be taught in school. Most know the accomplishments of Dr. Martin Lu-ther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks and George

Washington Carver, but how many people are famil-iar with names likes William H. Carney, Susie King Taylor, Bessie Coleman or Guion “Guy” Bluford. William H. Carney was the first African Ameri-can to win the Congressional Medal of Honor for acts of heroism at Fort Wagner during the Civil War. Originally intent on becoming a minister, Carney felt he could best serve God and his country as a member of the union army. He was assigned to the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the first black regiment in the north. Even after being shot four times, Carney refused to surrender the col-ors and never allowed them to touch the ground.

For more than two hundred years African Americans have participated in every conflict in United States history. They have not only fought bravely the common enemies of the United States but have also had to confront the individual and institutional racism of their countrymen. — Lt. Col. [Ret] Michael Lee Lanning, author, “The African-American Soldier: From Crispus Attucks to Colin Powell.”

The story of the regiment has been recounted in the movie “Glory”. Susie King Taylor was the first African American nurse in the Civil War. In addition to performing her duties as a nurse, Taylor started a school to help edu-cate African American children and soldiers. She served in that capacity for over four years without receiving a single dollar. Bessie Coleman was the first licensed African Ameri-can pilot in the United States. She had to travel to France in the early 1920’s after World War I in order to attend her training. Upon her return to the United States, she performed in air shows and conducted lectures for young people in California, Texas and Georgia. Despite being told he was not college material, Gui-on “Guy” Bluford went on to graduate from Pennsylva-nia State University in 1964. He went on to become a pilot and flew over 140 combat missions in Vietnam.

He would later become the first African Ameri-can astronaut, and serve on four separate space missions. Black History Month is not only time for African Americans to celebrate the his-tory of their race, but it is an opportu-nity for all to recognize the contributions that African Americans have made to this country and throughout the world. The III Corps Equal Opportunity Office will be con-ducting a formal African American History Observance on Friday, February 25th, at Club Hood with events planned for Saturday the 26th, and Sunday the 27th. For specific information, please contact III Corps Equal Op-portunity Office at 254-287-6242. s

ey Lovers, why not treat yourself and that special someone to a mouthwatering dinner and a show at Club Hood? Celebrity Mystery Theater is coming to Club Hood and it is an upbeat

show that caters to those who enjoy comedy, a good mystery, and/or celebrity impersonators/entertainers. The performance is 80 percent scripted comedy, 20 percent improvisational and incorporates audi-ence participation. The murder--or shall I say evening will take place on February 14,

beginning with 6 pm cocktails. Following cocktails is a 7 pm din-ner that is simply divine, but the real fun begins when the ac-

tors come out and the Celebrity Mystery Theater show starts. Celebrity Mystery Theater, a show that first reached its suc-

cess in New York, Boston and Las Vegas is now being per-formed at Club Hood. It is the only comedy murder

mystery show with a cast of celebrity impersonators. World famous detectives hilariously solve a crime as they lead the audience through a trail of clues. Each clue leads to a suspect, or famous celebrity,

holding valuable information and you never know who may walk through the door… The audience gathers to meet guest speaker Mr. Sherlock Holmes; the world’s greatest su-per sleuth. During his introduction to the “Scam Spade School of Detectives” a mur-dered victim is discovered. Upon Sher-lock’s review of the crime scene, he is hilariously interrupted and eventu-ally joined by another famous detec-tive to solve the crime. The surprise element is not only who com-

mitted the crime, but who the suspects are… I could share more of the storyline with you, but then

eart disease is the number one killer in the United States, and while it usually affects people later in life, choices made early on

can reduce future risks. Dr. Thomas Dove, chief of Cardiology Services at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center said, “Fatty streaks devel-op in a person’s arteries as early as their teenage years and progress later in life to plaques, which may eventu-ally block flow or rupture and cause a heart attack”. While people can’t go back and change what they did years or even decades ago, the doctor said it’s never too late to begin a healthier lifestyle. He recommends people exercise daily, reduce salt intake and quit smoking. “There are no shortcuts to a healthy life style. I struggle with diet; fatty foods taste good,” he admitted. “It is easier when you get home at night to snuggle up with the TV instead of going for a 30-minute walk, but we have multiple studies to show the benefits accrued by making healthy lifestyle changes”. “It is very difficult but imperative that we don’t smoke, because smoking increases the risk of heart attack several fold and this risk decreases rapidly when we stop smoking”, he added.

Another way to promote a healthy heart is through better nutrition, and Capt. Heather Cline, Chief, Inpatient Dietetics at CRDAMC, said eating heart healthy has added benefits. “When you choose foods healthy for the heart, you are also choosing foods that are more waistline-friendly and rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants,” she said. She recommends people limit the amount of high-cholesterol fatty foods they eat, such as marbled meats, poultry skin, bacon, sausage, whole milk, butter and egg yolks. “You shouldn’t eat more than 300 mg of cholesterol per day. One egg yolk contains approximately 212 mg of cholesterol, so you can easily see how eating eggs in excess can increase your cholesterol, putting you at risk of heart disease,” she said. Dove added that everyone over the age of 20 should have their cholesterol level checked. “If the value is normal, this should be repeated every five years, and the results should be discussed with your physician,” he said. While heart healthy foods should make up the major-ity of a person’s diet, Cline said people don’t have to rule out treats altogether. “You can still eat some of your favorite foods as long as you eat them in moderation,” she said. February is American Heart Month, making it the per-fect time to think about heart healthy lifestyle changes. The Nutrition Therapy Clinic at Darnall offers one-hour heart healthy eating classes. To enroll, call 254-288-8860. Darnall also has three full-time cardiologists, and the Cardiology Department performs exercise testing and heart monitors, and they can do heart CT scans, which provide very detailed views of the heart and arteries without requiring an invasive procedure. “Together, your doctor and dietitian will be able to further assist you in adopting a heart healthy lifestyle,” said Cline, “but remember to give your changes time.” s

ou can sock it to Sprocket, whether you need to attach

a trailer hitch, work on an ex-haust system, AC, diagnostic, State Inspection Sticker, or even if you have a non-auto related project that requires the use of advanced equip-ment. Sprocket Auto Crafts doesn’t stop at providing all the tools nec-essary for you to complete auto projects; they also have skilled pro-fessionals happy to help. Sprocket offers Soldiers and their Family members an immense opportunity to save money by utilizing Sprockets services. Sprocket Auto Shop is not only THE place to perform automo-tive repairs, but provides an oppor-tunity to become more knowledge-able about the craft. I would be remised if I didn’t mention one of Sprockets coolest features, the Welding & Exhaust Shop at Sprocket Auto Crafts. The Welding & Exhaust Shop supplies all the tools every welder dreams of, in addition to a expert Welding Techni-cian on-site to help with any project. From Mig, Arc and Oxygen-Acety-lene welders that perform all types of metal welding, including alumi-num, to other tools and equipment,

such as a Ben Person Pipe Bender, sandblasters, drill presses, plasmas cutters, chop saws, cut-off tools, and much more. Even if you have an un-der car project in need of welding, Sprockets Welding & Exhaust Shop can accommodate you with one of their state-of-the-art vehicle lifts. Sprocket Auto Crafts Shop may very well be one of Ft. Hoods best kept secrets, but it is fast becoming a primary resource for the novice and advanced automobile buff. So hurry up, go out, and ask your neighbor if they have had an opportunity to “Sock it to Sprocket”! Patrons must present a valid Mil-itary ID, sign in prior to utilizing ser-vices, adhere to proper dress code: closed toe shoes and shirts must be worn at all times, payment is due at time of service and all debris must be properly disposed of (according to shop policy). s

inters aren’t too harsh in Texas, but usually cold enough to scare us away from the great outdoors. February is

about the time that the sweet sun reappears and temperatures begin to draw us outside again. Fort Hood’s Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation has just what you are looking for as they have amped up the adrenaline with Area 111, Fort Hood’s own ATV park. Open during daylight hours only, Area 111 (located on Clear Creek Road and West Range Road) encompasses the true passion of the sport with varying, natural terrain for riders of all skill levels. While personally-owned vehicles are not authorized on the course, the course does welcome dirt bike owners. Riders must wear a helmet, gloves, goggles and closed-toe shoes. As another safety precaution, the buddy system is mandatory. All users must purchase an ATV permit, prior to riding at Area 111. Permits are available at the Sportsmen’s Center, Bldg. 1937, Rod and Gun Club Loop and may be purchased either annually or daily. The annual Family package can be purchased for $50, while an annual individual permit costs riders $20. One-day permits are also available for $5 per rider. For more information, call the Sportsmen’s Center at 254-532-4552. As if the adrenaline of an ATV course does not already warm you up, how about a game of paintball at the newly re-opened paintball course, out at Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area? BLORA is located on North Nolan Road, 10 miles from East Range Road. Access to the park is also possible from FM 439 and Sparta Road.

Splat it up at BLORA’s Paintball Course, with three playing fields, available for beginners to experts on Saturday, Sunday and Holidays, 10 am-6pm. Special arrangements, coordinated and approved in advance, may be made to accommodate large groups on weekdays and it’s open to the public. Finally, if those two activities do not warm you up the Sportsmen’s Center has an archery range and trap and skeet shooting for the avid outdoorsman. For more information, call the Sportsmen’s Center at 254-532-4552. s

1. Plan to have a night out on the town that includes just the two of you, to allow you to reconnect with each other without any outside interference. 2. Do not limit kissing or hugging to just saying goodbye or hello, but surprise your partner with an unexpected show of affection. 3. Text or call your partner spontaneously just to let them know that you are thinking of them. 4. If you’re out and you see something that you think you’re partner would like, go ahead and surprise them with it. It will let them know that you were thinking of them. 5. Reflect on what initially gave you that warm fuzzy feel about your spouse/partner and try to recapture those moments. 6. Live, love and laugh together, because sharing can help keep you connected and keep the romance in your relationship.

Healthy Relationships

I t can sometimes be difficult to keep the romance alive in your

relationship, because life activities sometimes get in the way. The follow-

ing tips are suggested to generate thoughts toward romance

that may work for your relationship.

One more important thing to remember is to avoid com-paring yourself to other couples. Every couple has their own version of romance and what works for them. The Fort Hood ACS, Family Advocacy Program offers Relationship Enrich-ment Workshops on a monthly basis. The workshops provide tips as noted above and focus upon building and sustaining healthy relationships between couples.

he name “Ms. Sondra” has become a regular mention in my household; from

“I want to read a book to Ms. Sondra” to “Can I show Ms. Sondra my plusses?” All coming from my 4-year old son, Tommy, who started Pre-K in August and no longer required child care. It’s been six months since he’s attended Sondra Fisher’s Family Child Care (FCC) program; but on the day of our visit, it’s almost as if he’d never stopped attending. As I pull into the familiar driveway of Sondra Fisher’s home, a Homes Off-Post partnership with Family Child Care, I can’t help but remember the feeling of joy as my daughter, Mia, and Tommy bolt to the door to be the first one to ring the doorbell. As Sondra answers the door to her fully converted garage that now serves as her child care program, she appears calm, cool and collected, even after a workday that began at 4:00 that morning. She welcomes Mia and Tommy into the program with a warm greeting and open arms, ready for a hug. Sondra comments on how big they’ve become since she’s last seen them and begins to ask them how they’re doing and what they’ve been doing in school. Sondra responds enthusiastically when they tell her about their day in school and how they’re going to go to Math Night after Tommy reads a book, this being the purpose of our visit. Tommy had been asking me for weeks now when he would be able to read a book to Ms. Sondra. I couldn’t help but laugh on our drive to Sondra’s

program when Tommy asked me for his book and began reading aloud to everyone in the car, for practice of cours While Tommy was reading and came across the word “with” and was able to read it without any trouble, Sondra asked, “You know this word? That’s a big word!” As Tommy enthusiastically nodded yes, I could see the excitement in his eyes as Sondra complemented him. While Tommy was reading, I took a glance at the environment; walls covered with colorful artwork, craftfully displayed alongside various pictures of field trips and activities the children have engaged in while in Sondra’s program. In the myriad of pictures, I find the picture I took of Sondra with Mia and Tommy on their last day of attendance and I remember the feeling of the tears I shed and the warm hug Sondra gave me that last day. As our visit ends and we say our goodbyes, Sondra gives them a hug and I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for having the privilege of Sondra’s nurturing care for my children over the years and with that, Sondra Fisher, has truly left a lasting impression! Family Child Care is always looking for highly qualified providers to provide care in their quarters/homes on and off the Fort Hood installation. Those interested in applying to be an FCC provider should call 254-287-5448. s

ebruary is not just about Valentine’s Day candy and

roses. It’s also a reminder to take care of our real “Hearts.” Ac-cording to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), it is im-portant to establish healthy lifestyle habits early in life - such as healthy eating patterns - in order to help keep the risk of heart disease low. The NHLBI has said, “Everyone 2 years of age and older should care about reducing the risk of devel-oping heart disease as an adult. Children, as well as adults, can im-prove the health of their hearts by fol-lowing a balanced diet, limiting foods high in saturated-fat and cholesterol and being physically active.” Studies have found that 80 percent of adolescents, be-tween the ages of 13 and 18 years, exceeded daily dietary recommendations for total and saturated fat. Another 49 percent exceeded rec-ommended intakes of dietary cholesterol; sub-sequently, these individ-uals were more likely to show early signs of atherosclerosis.

Fort Hood Youth Sports and Fitness Program, in

partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of America, has

answered Mrs. Michelle Obama’s call to fight obesity with the “Lets Move

Initiative”; and has begun the “Get Fit…Be Strong,” program. Fort Hood will be the first

Army installation to begin intense education and challenges for youth ages 5-18 years. Get Fit…Be Strong will engage, educate and em-power Fort Hood Families, across the lifespan, to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity and good nutrition. This worldwide Army program will kick off in February with Fort Hood Youth participat-

ing in a Guinness World Record attempt, to complete the most simultaneous Star Jumps

(jumping jacks) in 2 minutes. Youth at in-stallations all over the world, to include

Hawaii, Germany, and Korea, will com-plete star jumps, in unison, in an ef-

fort to break the record. If you would like to jump-

start your heart and health, and break the world record,
