A CALL FOR PRAYER ON THE WORLD DAY OF THE SICK: Tuesday, February 11

Saint Pope John Paul II in 1992 designated February 11 as World Day of the Sick. In the letter that Saint John Paul published to institute the World Day of the Sick he re-ferred to “a special time of prayers and sharing, of offering one’s suffering for the good of the Church and of reminding us to see in our sick brothers and sisters the face of Christ who, by suffering, dying, and rising, achieved the salvation of humankind”. On World Day of the Sick, we are called to be especially sensitive to the needs of the ill and homebound, and so....We pray to You, O God of our Faith. We lift to You imploringly our needs and the needs of the sick throughout the world, particularly those who are cast away because of their illness or advanced age. We pray for the patience of the sick, and the compassion of caregivers. Let Your blessings of healing come upon our sisters/brothers that they may praise You all the days of their lives. God of healing, heal Your people. We pray, merciful God, hear our prayers. Amen.

The weekend of February 15 and 16 will be Pledge Weekend for this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) throughout the Diocese of Trenton. Each year Bishop O’Connell seeks the support of all of the members of the Dio-cese of Trenton to further the work of our ministries. Each of us has a vital part in all we do in Christ’s name, and each of us can share in all we do with a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Our single Act of Faith propels the works of love that build up our Church. You make that happen with a generous gift to the ACA.

This year St. Michael’s share of the Diocesan-wide goal is $109,000.00 (the same goal as in the past ten years and the goal that we achieved last year and the year before for the first times). As the result of reaching our parish ACA goal in each of those two most recent years we not only strongly supported the Diocese in its ministries and charitable works and demonstrated our commitment to stewardship and charitable giving, our parish also gained the financial reward of a $23,000 rebate in 2018 and a $16,500 rebate in 2019. Those ACA rebate funds were utilized for the Low-er Church restrooms renovation project, church foundation water-proofing and repairs, CCD/education materials, and buildings and grounds repairs.

I have proposed to the parish trustees and finance council that if St. Michael’s is successful again in achieving the parish’s $109,000 ACA goal and earns and receives a rebate of $16,000 or more that the parish use those rebate funds for: (a) replacing and upgrading the votive candle racks in the rear of the church and in the St. Ann and Virgin Mary Shrine, (b) masonry repairs of the church’s 1886 cornerstone and west façade steps, and (c) replacement of liturgical vestments that are showing their age. Other parish-related uses of proceeds are also under consideration.

As the people of the Diocese of Trenton, we and you and all of us have an opportunity to help others see Christ working in our midst. I ask you to please take a moment and truly reflect on any help you can give. We truly need everyone to participate. This year we again are striving to do our parish fair share toward helping the Diocese reach the Diocesan/four-county/107-parish goal of $7 million.

I am always grateful and moved by the level of support you give to our parish and to our Diocese. I thank you for this support, and may God continue to bless you and your family and St. Michael’s Parish. Rev. John K. Butler Pastor

Communion Visits; Confession Visits; Anointing of the Sick

Please keep in mind that the parish priests and our lay Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist are available and ea-ger to bring Communion to parishioners who are in the hospital (nursing homes, assisted living facilities, rehab centers, and hospices, too) and to parishioners who are at home but unable to get to church. Please contact Mary Valan at the parish office or Dotty O'Hara at (908)310-6497 to make arrangements. Hospitals and other healthcare facili-ties generally do not notify the parish office regarding their Catholic patients who desire to receive Communion. And so it falls to the patient herself/himself or to a family member or friend to contact the parish office to make the re-quest. The parish priests will also very gladly make a hospital visit or home visit to hear a Confession and/or administer the Sacrament of the Sick (“Anointing of the Sick”) in addition to bringing Holy Communion. Please remember to con-tact the parish office or Dotty to make these arrangements. Thank you.

Love is in the Air: For children Valentine’s Day means candy hearts, silly cards, and excitement.

“How different it can be for us as adults. The Love Day can be a symbol that we have not yet gotten love to work for us as we would like. Or it can be a symbol of something different, something better. Our most painful relationships, we have learned, have assisted us on the journey to healing”

Be kind to yourself.

Just get through the day if you are alone. “Today I will move forward with my life, despite what others are do-ing or not doing. I will know it is my right to cross the bridge to a better life...I know that I am now in a better

place and where I am meant to be.”

St. Michael's has formed a group for those that need support with life's new paths and journeys. If you need a place to come and feel safe please plan on attending

The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony

Jesus elevated marriage to a Sacrament at the Wedding Feast at Cana. Catholics have the duty to receive the Sacrament of Matrimo-ny in a church. The Grace of the Sacrament of Matrimony enhances and supports the permanent and indissoluble bond of marriage and strengthens the love and fidelity,

patience and wisdom of the spouses. Please make contact with the parish office at least one year prior to your intended marriage date to begin the preparation process. This includes attendance at a Pre-Cana Conference and several meetings with one of our parish priests. A specific wedding date cannot be assured by the parish until after this marriage preparation has commenced and initial documentation has been received and reviewed. Therefore, all engaged couples are strongly advised to speak to the parish staff first when beginning to make wedding plans and strongly advised not to make commitments with third-parties (banquet halls, photogra-phers, hotels, airlines, etc.) until after the wedding date has been finalized in writing with the parish office. If you are presently in a civil marriage and desire to receive the Sacrament and enter into a valid Catholic marriage, please contact the parish office at 732-222-8080 to obtain further information about the “convalidation” of your marriage. We also offer direction and assistance on the possibility of receiving an annul-ment for those who are divorced. Please do not hesitate to call. The annulment process is generally less difficult or cumbersome than imagined.
