Thank you to all who came to help and support us at our
recent Open House.
I would like to highlight our
Miss Stembridge’s
Kindergarten class. During the
month of December they paired
with 30 other elementary school
classrooms from around the
United States and Canada. The students they exchanged
cards with ranged in grades from preschool-5th grade.
The theme of the card exchange this year was lights.
Through the project they learned about geography,
cultural diversity, and the true spirit of the holiday
season. The kindergarten students really enjoyed
participating in this project! They especially loved the
Christmas cards they received from other Catholic
school students in faraway places such as California and
Texas!
What a whirlwind Catholic
Schools week!
We gave so many lunches to
shelter along with warm
clothing.
Thank you so much students.
Congratulations to Jacalyn Alongi whose drawing was
selected as one of the eight winners for
the 2015 Recycle Macomb contest.
There were hundreds of drawings
submitted from fourth and fifth grade
students from all over Macomb
County, and we are very proud of her
accomplishment.

Saint Thecla Parish presents:
“ETHNIC NIGHT 2015”
SATURDAY, APRIL 18
Saint Thecla Parish has been putting onthese annual ‘Ethnic Nights’ for the past 19years.
I’ve asked several people what theythought we should do this year. I was reallysurprised when several of them came up with thesame suggestion - something I never thought of…. A good old All-American “CountryHoedown”!!! So ~~ Guess what we’re havingthis year - - - You guessed - - - a good old“Country Hoedown”!!
But that means this year for the first timewe’ll be having a “Dress Code”! Here’s acouple of hints: MEN: Jeans of course, preferably Bib-Style if you’ve got them. If youdon’t have any Jeans, wear the best pants you;shirts, what else but a plaid or checkered flanneltype. No ties allowed. Hats, Straw or Western, would be appropriate. Cowboy Boots are best,or if you’re really going all out, you can dress upby wearing ‘Sneakers’!
LADIES: I’m not an expert on ladiesstyles, but I would recommend maybe a colorfulflowered blouse with a nice plaid or stripedskirt! Now that’s Class – especially with a lotof sequins! Shoes and hats are the same as formen, but if you can afford it, you could addsome plastic or paper flowers to your hat, ifyou’re wearing one! Right up front you can seethis is going to be a High Class night out!!
Mark the date down RIGHT NOW: Saturday,April 18. 2015. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. Ticketprices will be the same as the last several year-$20 each or a Reserved Table of 8 in your namefor $150!! Tickets will be available startingMarch 1st.
We’ve contracted the “Waco CountryBand” for that evening. They play slowCountry and not-so-slow music includingseveral sets of ‘Line Dancing’! There will notbe any ‘Square Dancing’. Square Dance Bandshave an extra ‘Caller’ and on occasion someeven bring along an extra 8 dancers toparticipate in every dance to show the beginnershow it should be done! (Guess who would haveto pay for those extra people
Of course the admission price will alsoinclude a Country Gourmet Meal. Beer andWine is extra!! Keep reading the bulletin everyweek for more information!

Please pray for us as we continueon our journey of discipleship.

Our Third Place and final Winner, again wasjust one vote behind our Second Place Winnerand the $50.00 prize was presented to our own:Deacon Tom Houle!!!
Thanks to all those who helped set up, workedin the kitchen, shopped, cooked, cleaned, anddid various other tasks to make this a successfulevent.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
I am writing to let you know that I have been selected by my teachers andadministration to represent Austin Catholic High School at a faith andleadership conference sponsored by the Augustinian Secondary SchoolsAssociation. I will be traveling to Villanova Prep High School in Californiawith seven of my peers in April to attend the Student Augustinian ValuesInstitute Conference.
I am writing you this letter because as a former St. Thecla Student andcurrent parishioner, I have always felt encouraged and supported by theParish and School. I humbly ask that you would support me and my fellowstudents by giving a monetary donation to help us pay for the travel expensesof our flight to California. It will cost more than $600.00 dollars for eachperson. I would appreciate it very much if you could donate what you can tohelp us make this trip possible. Even the smallest donation can help make thistrip a reality. The rest of the conference expenses are covered by the
Augustinian Secondary Schools.
This event will help me to better understand myself, my role as a student at Austin Catholic and how ourcore values of Truth, Unity and Love are being lived daily. I hope to return to school after thisconference with ideas to share with all of my fellow students.
I appreciate whatever help you can give. Please pray for me and the success of this conference and for all ofus at Austin Academy.,

I am so proud of my 8th grade Student Committee who gave witness to their Catholic faith and their love for theirschool before each Holy Mass last weekend. Their wonderful testimonies helped to make our successful Open Houseeven more special. In addition, the Student Committee, Mrs. DuBach, and I attended a special Catholic Schools WeekMass at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. Seeing hundreds of young people give witness to their faith was trulytouching. Archbishop Vigneron celebrated an inspiring Holy Mass with twenty-eight brother priests. Miss Pryor
Can you believe Lent is already right around the corner? In a week and a half, we willcelebrate Ash Wednesday! During Lent this year, we will be singing Tree of Life (# 397 inour hymnal) as our opening song for all of Lent – it is one of Fr. Doug’s favorites! It hasseparate verses just for Lent with beautiful text about asking the Lord to give us faith to liveHis word. I’m excited to start using it as it is also one of my favorites – I love the hauntingmelody!
For Lent, we will also be changing the sung parts of the mass – the Sanctus (Holy Holy), theMemorial Acclamation, the Great Amen, and the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) – and we will besinging the chant form. The Sanctus and the Agnus Dei we will sing in Latin, but the otherswill be in English. Latin is still the premiere language of the Catholic Church, and Chant isconsidered the premiere music form, so it is with great reverence and joy that I haveprogramed these selections for our Lenten season. I will have printed copies distributedthroughout the pews. We have already learned the Memorial Acclamation and the GreatAmen. This weekend, we will learn the Sanctus and next weekend, the Agnus Dei.
Look for helpful hints to Latin pronunciation printed in this Sunday’s bulletin – I’ve hadmany classes on the correct way to pronounce church Latin, so feel free to stop me anytimeand I’ll be happy to give you some lessons! It may be slightly different from the way “Sr.Mary Music-class” taught you back in grammar school because they didn’t have classesdevoted to pronunciation back then! But I promise you, I got it covered! I even used to teachdiction to the Detroit Archdiocesan Chorus when Norah Duncan, IV was the director. J
In addition, I am announcing that we are purchasing new hymnals! The time has finallycome! Not only are our current ones getting old and tattered, but they are not so currentanymore since the U.S. Bishops implemented the new translations several years ago. Weshould have them in the pews sometime during the Lenten season. They will be similar tothe ones we have now, just updated with the new translations, and there will be opportunitiesfor you to sponsor a book as part of our fundraising campaign to help cover the costs. Staytuned for more info about the hymnals and the details on our fundraising campaign!
Keep singing!
Deborah Frontczak
Your St. Vincent DePaul group here at St. Thecla appreciates your support. We have been hard atwork this winter. During November and December 2014 we assisted 7 families comprised of 8 adultsand 13 children with clothing, furniture or rent.
We have also been successful in securing Michigan THAW (The Heat and Warmth Fund) funds tohelp 4 families (11 adults and 3 children) get up-to-date on their gas or electric bills in amount of$4,246. In two instances, THAW paid their bill so they could get their heat turned back on.
If you'd like to be part of helping others in need, our next meeting is Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at6:30 pm in the St. Thecla School. We'd love to see you.
Church Latin Pronunciation 101
Latin is very similar to Italian and Spanish as they are considered romance languages, Italian and Spanish beingderived from Latin.
Here are some helpful recordings if you want to practice at home! J

Latin Vowels
a = ah, as though you are sighing
e = eh, (as though you’re Canadian, eh?) not a full “ay” sound with a diphthong, but a shorter sound like the French“bebe” or the English word “chaotic.”
i = eee, this vowel is never short, like the word “in.” It is always “eeee”
o = aw, exactly like the vowel sound in the word “cough.” There is no diphthong like we have in the English word“no” where we round our lips to an “oo” at the end.
u = ooo, very hollow sounding, like an owl saying “whooo”
