The signs performed by Jesus in the Gospel require faith from those who ask for them.
Faith is a gift, born out of the preaching of the Gospel, the good news that points to the presence of the Lord in the world. In today's second reading, Saint Paul shares it with the Corinthians in a radical way: "Woe to me, if I do not preach the gospel!" Today's first reading introduces us to Job who, in his ordeal, declares how transitory life is and how important God is to him. Consistent with this, the second reading shows us the most valuable treasure of our faith: the Gospel, the proclamation of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the center of our lives and the path to salvation. I recommend that parish groups, and especially young people, discuss the words of Saint Paul and the impact of the Gospel in their lives. What person in our midst best proclaims the message of the Gospel, not with words but with deeds?
From the Desk of Father Kurt In the Gospel this Sunday Jesus cures Simon’s mother-in-law who was sick with a fever. This nameless woman, whose healing and service is immediately overshadowed by a huge crowd in the very next verse, is the model of discipleship. Her actions demonstrate that she already knows, out of her own experience, that healing implies an obligation of service. Like Simon’s mother-in-law, when we are healed, let us not forget to thank Jesus for his goodness, mercy, and compassion by turning to serve others. We need to be instruments for Jesus’ healing work. Bringing healing and wholeness is Jesus’ ministry even today. Let us ask for the ordinary healing we need in our own lives. Our own healing process is completed only when we are ready to help others in their needs and to focus on things outside ourselves.
Love in Christ,
Father Kurt Farrell
