    Ordinary Time for Extraordinary Growth

Do you like Chocolate ice cream or Vanilla ice cream better? Although there are other flavors, these are the big two that form the basis of ice cream flavors. The one common thing that all flavors share is they are ice cream. Not that this is proper comparison, but it helps us to understand the connec-tion between the Big Two that form the basis of our Catholic Faith. There is a third, but we will explore that at another time. The Big Two are Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tra-dition. Both of these were given to us by Jesus. Jesus is the reason and the basis for all of our New Testament writings. The coming of Jesus in human flesh was unthinkable by hu-mankind. God surprised us but when looking into the Old Testament writings we see that God announced the coming of the Messiah. Jesus came to bring to fulfillment that which humankind could not do. Do you wish to hear God speak to you? Read Sa-cred Scripture. It was given to us from God so that He could have a conversation with us. God speaks to us when we take the time each day to welcome His Word into our thoughts, mind, feelings, and heart. This is one way that God deepens His relationship with us. Another way that God deepens His relationship with us is through Sacred Tradition. One way to understand Sa-cred Tradition is how we come to be a member of a group. The group God desires everyone to be a member of is the Catholic Church. This is the group that Jesus came to earth to be the foundation. With any organization or group, it en-tails codifying expectations, achieving aims and ultimately a final goal. Sacred Tradition helps us to accomplish these things and reach the goal of Heaven. The Apostles were trained and taught by Christ the Traditions which are important to God. As the Apostles walked with Christ, He showed them and trained them in His Way. The Sacred Scriptures are alive in the person of Jesus Christ. The Sacred Scriptures need to become alive in each one of us. The best way they become alive is when we par-ticipate in Sacred Tradition. Jesus becomes more present to us the more often we engage in Sacred Tradition. There is a relationship between Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition.

Sacred Tradition is the oral teaching of Jesus Christ handed down to his apostles, who in turn handed it down to their disciples (the early Church Fathers), and then to the next generation, and then finally to us. In Dei Verbum (The Word of God), we read, “the relationship between Tradition and Scripture is explained: “Hence there exists a close con-nection and communication between sacred Tradition and sacred Scripture. For both of them, flowing from the same divine wellspring, in a certain way merge into a unity and tend toward the same end. For sacred Scripture is the word of God inasmuch as it is consigned to writing under the inspi-ration of the divine Spirit. To the successors of the apostles, sacred Tradition hands on in its full purity God’s word, which was entrusted to the apostles by Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit. Thus, by the light of the Spirit of truth, these succes-sors can in their preaching preserve this word of God faithful-ly, explain it, and make it more widely known. Consequently, it is not from sacred Scripture alone that the Church draws her certainty about everything which has been revealed. Therefore, both sacred Tradition and sacred Scripture are to be accepted and venerated with the same devotion and rev-erence.”

    Continued...

By living, eating, and resting with Jesus, the Apostles came to know Sacred Scripture better because the true author of Scripture was leading them. God was fully present to them in the person of Jesus Christ. The unwritten Jesus is the reason for the existence of Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradi-tion, and the Catholic Church. God knows we need more than the written Word of God. Sacred Tradition compli-ments Sacred Scripture by providing concrete visual set-tings and activities to worship God.

Always In Christ, Fr. Thomas J. Barry Jr.

We welcome Olivia Jane Burbank and Kaylee Grace Infantino to our parish family. Olivia and Kaylee will be baptized in our parish this weekend. We congratulate their parents and Godparents.

OLPH St. Vincent DePaul Society Lift up your spirit, your heart, your arms…all in thanksgiving… that better days are closer now! Everything around us is brightening up: Covid-19 is more under control; the days are longer, sunnier, warmer; our area has greened-up; trees and flowers are alive again and we are enjoying seeing smiles and the warmth of cautious hugs. All of these have helped to renew and strength-en our sense of HOPE. A perfect world is still beyond our reach but it is now again within our vision, our aspirations and dreams. We’ve grown a bit older but a little wis-er at how to take care of ourselves through times of challenge. Still, some of us have specific con-cerns, worries and needs. These, we bring to God in prayer for His guidance and peace. And, in your moving forward to find ways out of your troubles, please be assured that your St. Vincent de Paul Society is here to help you too. We have an extraordinary number of resources within our network and at our fingertips. Sometimes we are able to help financially but, we are so much more than a checkbook. You need only to call us at our rectory phone line: 732-291-0272 Ext. 120, (M-F) leave your name, phone number and a brief message. One of our members will return your call within a day or two to see how we may be able to help you. Thank you and God bless you!

RESPECT LIFE WALKING WITH MOMS IN NEED Pregnant and parenting Moms in need are in our par-ish and in our neighborhoods. Many who choose abortion feel that they have no other option. They may be pressured to abort by the baby’s biological father, or by their own parents. They may lack fi-nancial support or a place to live. They may be overwhelmed by the commitment to care for a help-less human being. They may believe that they can-not afford to add to their family. We can give them another choice. There are so many resources that can be offered to those strug-gling with this major, life-changing decision. Please reach out and share with them the Pregnancy Re-sources on our Parish Website and Facebook Pages. You can also call the Rectory and leave a message for our OLPH-St. Agnes Respect Life Ministry at ext. 262. We are praying for the opportunity to help.
