SXU then & Now Stuut Earns World- Hyundai Award www.sxustudentmedia.com A Saint Xavier woman will make her debut at the 74th annual White and Red Ball on February 16 to benefit Polish culture and charities. Kasia Maniak, a senior nursing major, is one of only seven women to receive the honor of being named a debutante by the Legion of Young Polish Women this year. “At first I was very shocked, but it’s a great honor. I’m so excited,” exclaims Maniak. A “debutante” traditionally refers to a woman who makes her first formal entrance into society. In this case, The Legion of Young Polish Women holds a debutante ball every year for various charitable and cultural causes. Teresa Skawski, the Legion’s former president, says that the women are performing a “social duty” as debutantes. As a debutante, Maniak is required to fundraise on the Legion’s behalf. The money raised is sent to help fund a number of Polish cultural organizations such as the Polish Museum of America, the Polish American Association and various Polish dance groups. Additional money is sent to fund orphanages in Poland and provide scholarships for Polish American students, as well as transfer students from Poland. Maniak is also required to attend monthly tea parties leading up to the ball as well as take dance classes to learn the Waltz. Dance partners are provided for each debutante for the ball, which will be held at the Hilton’s Grand Ballroom in Chicago, though each woman has the option of bringing her own partner. Being a debutante has several benefits according to Maniak. “You get a lot of attention from people and press, and you make a lot of important connections. It’s a great honor.” Maniak was born in Krakow, Poland. After spending 13 years of her life there, she moved to the United States with her family. She says the hardest thing about moving was leaving all her friends behind and adapting to a new country and new people. Upon entering the U.S., she already had a firm grasp of the English language from having taken classes in Poland. When asked to compare Americans to Poles, she laughed. “Poles see Americans as always happy and always saying hi to each other, while in Poland people are more distant.” She also made the comparison that Poles care more about the quality of their lives, while Americans seem to be more rushed.” At Saint Xavier, Maniak is working on completing her nursing degree. She says her inspiration for becoming a nurse occurred in high school when she helped comfort and care for her pregnant teacher who had passed out during class. “I knew I wanted to help people every day after that,” she reveals. The Legion of Young Polish Women has been choosing women like Maniak for 74 years to help it support Polish causes. It began in 1939 as an organization dedicated to sending food and clothing to Polish prisoners of war during World War II after the German invasion. Former president Skawski praises Maniak saying “Kasia is an SXU Student Honored by Polish Organizaon incredible person. She works a job, is a full time student and still finds time to be a debutante. This shows a person of great determination.” Tony Bara Editor in Chief For her part, Maniak is thrilled to be a debutante. “It will be one of the most beautiful memories that I’ll ever have.” Senior Nursing Major Kasia Maniak in her debutante dress Kasia Maniak Nicole Rosales Senior News Editor Domesc Incident Disturbs Komensky SXU’s Komensky Apartment The Xavierite On January 27 at approximately 4:15 a.m., a domestic violence incident was reported to have occurred in the vicinity of the SXU Komensky apartments. According to Jack Touhy, Chief of Police and Director of the Public Safety Department, a student reported a woman screaming to the SXU Police Dispatch around this time. Soon after, Touhy heard that multiple Oak Lawn units were being sent to the location as a response to several calls for a “person with a knife.” The SXU Police assisted the Oak Lawn Police, who had jurisdiction over the investigation, upon arriving at the apartments. One SXU student, who resides at one of the Komensky apartments and wishes to remain anonymous, came into personal contact with a person involved in the incident. “Around 4:00 a.m., I heard a woman screaming. I opened my door to see if I could help, or if [someone] needed an ambulance, and some guy was staring at me, covered in blood and holding a huge knife,” the tenant explained. “I slammed the door and called the police.” According to the tenant, The Oak Lawn Police Department arrived immediately with almost 10 police cars. “After a few hours of dealing with the guy, his wife, his kids, the cops came upstairs and asked what I saw,” the tenant said. “I don’t know the whole story, but from what [the police] explained,” the wife stabbed the husband with the knife. World Bits: Ocean Edition

The Chinese government has received access to the Indian Ocean last week. This was achieved by “developing and managing Pakistan’s port of Gwadar”. Allowed by contract, China won a 40-year project after the Port of Singapore Authority left because of infrastructure problems within the country. In the Southern Ocean, there is an anti-whale activist group, Sea Shepard, which is preventing the Japanese from their annual hunt. Former Australian Greens leader Brown states “It is likely that we have intercepted these whale poachers before a single harpoon has been fired”, which is good news for the group. How-ever, US courts may prevent Sea Shepa-rd’s campaign. (http://www.news.com.au/news/sea-shepherd-intercept-japanese-whaling-fleet-in-southern-ocean/story-fnejlrpu-1226565332988)

Due to concerns of oil spills, the Arctic Coun-cil is debating a proposal by oil companies to be discussed on February 5. Problems arisen deal with how fragile and crucial the region is. If a spill were to happen, it could harm water supplies. Oil companies strike back saying that this is a push towards conserving the Arctic Circle. If you are a reader of mycolumn(thankstothosewhoare)then you know that two weeksago Iwrote a piece about how aselectgroupofAmericanswantedtheUnited States government toconstructareal, workingreplicaoftheDeathStarfromGeorgeLucas’s“StarWars”movies. That story coupled withthenews that J.J.Abramswillbedirectingthefirstnewinstallmentofthenew“StarWars”trilogyre-ignitedmyinterestintheoriginalfranchisefeaturingEpisodesIV-VI(“A NewHope”, “The EmpireStrikesBack”and“Returnof theJedi”). They’retheclassictaleofgoodvs.evil, featuringallthegrandstoryarchetypes: the hero’s journey, redemption,Davidv.Goliathstylebattles, damsels in distress andmagicunlikeanyputonthescreen–theforce.Theproblem?Ionlyvvvowntheoriginal trilogyonVHS.SoIembarkedonaquesttofindtheoriginalfilmsonDVD.WhatIfounddisturbedme. In 2004, LucasfilmLimitedreleasedremasteredversionsoftheoriginal“StarWars” franchiseonDVD.Theseeditionshavemassiveedits and alterations from thetheatrical versions of theoriginalfilms. Certainactors, mostnotably

Sebastian Shaw (the originalAnakinSkywalker)andCliveRevill(the originalEmperor Palpatine),havebeeneditedoutofthefilmsentirely and replacedwith theircounterpartsfromLucas’sprequels(“ThePhantomMenace”,“AttackoftheClones”and“RevengeoftheSith”). Other alterationshave beenmade to “enhance” the specialeffects and adjust theolder filmstohavemorecontinuitywith theprequels.Someofyoumightthinkthatthatisagoodthing.It’snot. Forthoseofyouactuallywholikethe“StarWars”prequels, don’tworry;Iamnotabouttogetintoa rant bashing the prequels likeeveryonelovestodo.Iamtalkingaboutsomethingfarmoreserious–thedestructionanddisrespectofculturalshapingandrelevantart. Despite what some people(maybeevenGeorgeLucas)mightthink, “StarWars” is not justentertainment. It is anhistoricalartifact that harkens all thewayback to 1977. Its impactwas andalwayswillbeastronomical–alowbudgetfilmthatcombinedthecraftand skill of thousands ofmodelbuildersandcomputerwizardstocreate amodernmarvel on thescreen, onethatwouldchangetheface of cinema forever. The editsarenot. They glaze over themassiveachievements of special effects,art/setdirection,filmeditingandsoundeffectsthatwerecreatedforthe first “StarWars” alone–nottomentionthefourOscarsthoseindividualdepartmentswon.

Notonlydothe2004editionsofthesefilmstrytoboostworkthatfranklydoesn’tneedanyhelp,butthey try to overwrite themassiveaccomplishments in cinematichistorythatis“StarWars”. If by now you’re readingthis and you think that theenhancementsmake these filmsbetter because the special effectslook better, then you obviouslydon’tgetthepoint.Thepointisthatthe2004edits(andsubsequentBluRayversionsoftheseeditions)existwhile properly restored versionsoftheoriginalsarenowheretobefound. However, insult has beenaddedtoinjury.In2006,the2004remasteredfilmswerereleasedonDVDonce again, only this timetheoriginal cutswere released asspecial features. The problem istheseDVDs are not restorationsof the films from the late 1970sthrough mid 1980s. They aretransfersfromthe1990slaserdiscsmerelyconvertedtoDVD. While I havenot personallyseen theseDVDs, reviews havestatedthatthefilmsarepresentedin a letterbox format, with hugeblack bars encasing both the topandsidesofthepicturesothattheactualmovie canonlybe seen intheexactcenterofyourtelevision, norhavetheseeditsbeenupdatedtofitHD,widescreenTVs. These original cuts werereleased after a legion of “StarWars” fans came together on awebsite called orignaltrilogy.com.The site organized a petition inwhich tens of thousands of fans

came together and thought theywonthebattletosee“StarWars”unaltered, as itwasmeant to beseen. Fromwhat I understand, these releases were a massiveletdown. Lucasfilmclaimedthatwhenthe original “StarWars” filmsand had been cleaned up andreceivedminoralterationsfor1997remasters,theoriginalprintswereforeverdamagedandaltered.This,tomymind,istherealcrime. InAlexandreO. Philippe’sdocumentary “The People vs.George Lucas”, several peoplecometogetheranddiscussthelogicbehind thepossibilityofwhetherthere is truthbehindthedamageoftheoriginal“StarWars”prints.Iwon’t regurgitate the facts, butthe general opinion is that nocompanywiththetechnologythatLucasfilmownswouldeverdamagethenegativestooneofthegreatestfilmseriesofall time inorder toremasterit. George Lucas has stated onseveral occasions that the newedits to hismovies are close tohis original visions. I can respectthat. It’s hard forme to say it,but I respectGeorge Lucas as afilmmakerandavisionaryandhisvision is ultimatelywhatmatters.(ThoughIdonotagreewithLucasmessing with “Empire StrikesBack”and“ReturnoftheJedi”–hedidn’tdirectthosefilms,IrvinKershnerandRichardMarquanddid, respectively.) What I can’t respect is thedisregard for the original “StarWars” trilogy.GeorgeLucasmay

have created “StarWars” andhemay have owned the licensingfor these films – the DisneyCorporation probably owns allthat stuffnow–but the spiritof“StarWars” belongs to the fans, youngandold. Younger fansmay gravitateto the flashier re-edits of thesefilms, butolderfansappreciatetheoriginalmastery of the first cuts.Film isacultural fingerprintandthe original “StarWars”movieschanged the entire film industryforever;peopleneedtounderstandwhyandtheoriginalcutsofthosemovies are the answer to thatquestion. Both editions can co-exist. If Disney really wants toimpress “StarWars” fans, thentheywillreleaseproperlyrestorededitions of the original films,alongwiththeremasteredversions.Bothversionscanco-exist.FrancisFordCoppola did this perfectlywhenhe releasedhismasterpiece“ApocalypseNow”initstheatricalgloryandits“redux”form. NHL This Week

This pastweek inNHLhashad a fair share of ups, downs, and surprises. Some teams havebeensurgingwhileothersstruggleforsuccess.Oneoftheteamsthathave been struggling is the LosAngelesKings.Theircurrentpointrecord,asofFebruary3,isatotalof6points, second to last in theWesternConference. After theirfirst seven games theKings haveonly walked away with just twovictories. Thismay be a surprisetosomegiventhattheKingswerelastyear’sStanleyCupChampions. However, there is a termhockeyfans use for the situation of thestruggling previous StanleyCupChampions, this isknownas the“StanleyCuphangover.”Are theLAKings suffering the dreadedStanleyCuphangover? Itmaybetooearlytotell;however, onethingis for sure, theKingsmust pickuptheirintensityinthehopesofmakinganotherrunfortheCup. The LosAngeles Kings arenot the only team strugglingfor points at this crucial pointin the season. Teams like theWashington Capitals, CalgaryFlames, Philadelphia Flyers,FloridaPanthers, andtheCarolinaHurricanes all have a point totalof 6 points or less. These teamsall have nearly half, if not less,of the points that their EasternandWesternConference leaderspossesasofnow.Obviously, iftheseteamswanttocontinuetheirNHL

seasonspastApril, they, liketheLAKings, needtostepuptheirgameandstartcomingupwithwinsandsoon! On theopposite side of thespectrum, teamsatthetopoftheNHL like Boston, Tampa Bay,Pittsburgh,Montreal, Chicago,SanJose, andSt.Louisarethrivingat this point in the season.ThispastweekChicago and San JosereignedundefeatedforthemajorityoftheweekuntilChicagolostinashootout to theMinnesotaWild.Later the San Jose would alsolose in a shootout, ruining theirperfectrecordaswell.BostonleadstheEastwithonlyoneregulationloss and an overtime loss, whileTampa,Pittsburgh, andMontrealtrailveryclosely.Theseteamshavestarted the season on the rightfoot, butmust hold on to theirsuccesstoremaininthetopeightof their respected conferences.Onethingfortheseteamstokeepinmind:itisnoteasytowinfivegames straight, that’s the hardpart, however it is not that hardtolosefivegames.Fivegamesthisshortened season is equivalent toten games regularly, so as theseteams continue dominating theNHL,theymustkeeptheirmistakestoaminimumtoensurethattheirhardworkwillpayoffintheStanleyCupPlayoffs.

Blackhawks Update

These past weeks a s aBlackhawksfanhavebeennothingshort of spectacular! As I havementionedinlastweek’sissue, the

2012-13ChicagoBlackhawkshaveset a franchise record for startingoffa seasonwitha recordof6-0-0. This was a great sight to seeforHawksfansacrossthenation.Although their perfect recordended in a shootout loss againsttheMinnesotaWild, theHawkshave still managed to receive apoint fromevery game theyhaveplayed. This isbecause theironlylosses are losses that took placebeyond regulation inovertimeorinashootout.DuetotheirsuccesstheBlackhawksarecurrently, asofFebruary 3, leading theWesternConference and theNHLwith atotalof16pointsandarecordof7-0-2. TheBlackhawkspointstreakhasbeenkeptafloatbytheentireHawksteam.Allplayersareplayingon such an intense level of playand in return are sitting on topof theNHL.Who specifically isto thank? You can startwith keyplayers likePatrickKane,MarianHossa,PatrickSharp, andJonathanToewswho all have contributedtoBlackhawk victorieswith theiroffensivenumbers.Kanecurrentlyhas13pointsontheseason,Hossahas10,Sharphas8,andToewshas7.
