Fifth Sunday After Epiphany February 4 & 5, 2018

Today’s Focus: God’s Miracles Prove His Message True Today we see some mighty miracles: the Red

Sea parted, diseases healed, demons driven away. But God always performs miracles to prove that his mes-

sage of salvation is sure and true. On the far bank of the Red Sea, the people “feared the Lord and put their

trust in him” (First Lesson). Jesus’ miracles gave him more opportunities to preach forgiveness; “That is why

I have come,” he said (Gospel). So today see God’s miracles and believe his message that “in all things God

works for the good of those who love him” (Second Lesson).

Opening Hymn “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” CW 234

Invocation M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Confession & Absolution M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking

him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my

thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I de-

serve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in

my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacri-

fice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your

sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

8:00 service continues here after the baptism. Please remain standing.

Gloria in Excelsis Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

We praise you, we bless you, we worship you, we glorify you, we give thanks to you, for your great glory,

O Lord God, heav’nly King, God the Father almighty.

O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,

You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.

You take away the sin of the world; receive our prayer.

You sit at the right hand of God the Father; have mercy on us.

For you only are holy; you only are the Lord. You only, O Christ, with the Holy Spirit,

Are most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Prayer of the Day M: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

M: Let us pray. Almighty God, you sent your one and only Son as the Word of life for our eyes to see and

our ears to hear. Help us believe what the Scriptures proclaim about him and do the things that are

pleasing in your sight; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and

the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First Lesson Exodus 14:13-22, 26-28, 31 (pg. 100) 13 Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord

will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you;

you need only to be still.”

15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. 16 Raise

your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the

sea on dry ground. 17 I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. And I will

gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. 18 The Egyptians will

know that I am the Lord when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.”

19 Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind

them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, 20 coming between the armies of

Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side;

so neither went near the other all night long.

21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with

a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, 22 and the Israelites went through

the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.

26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back

over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen.” 27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at

daybreak the sea went back to its place. The Egyptians were fleeing toward it, and the Lord swept them into

the sea. 28 The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen—the entire army of Pharaoh that

had followed the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them survived.

31 And when the Israelites saw the mighty hand of the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the peo-

ple feared the Lord and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant.

Psalm 103 CW Pg. 105 Sung in unison

Second Lesson Romans 8:28-30 (pg. 1718) 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been

called according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image

of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he

also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

Gospel Mark 1:29-39 (pg. 1524) M: The Holy Gospel is written in St. Mark chapter one.

C: Glory be to you, O Lord!

29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and An-

drew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he

went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.

32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33 The

whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out

many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.

35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a soli-

tary place, where he prayed. 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him,

they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”

38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is

why I have come.” 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out de-

mons.

M: This is the Gospel of our Lord.

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the vir-

gin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into

hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the

right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the

dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of

sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of the Church

M: Lord Jesus, Son of God and Sun of Righteousness, arise in our hearts and shine on us with the healing

rays of mercy and grace.

C: Break through the darkness of our doubts and selfishness and dispel the shadows of fear and guilt.

M: We praise you for the healing which Calvary’s sacrifice has brought to our bleeding souls and bruised

hope. We thank you for the mending power of the gospel which binds up the wounds of our sin-

damaged lives.

C: We glorify you for rescuing us from eternal death.

M: Forgive us for so seldom pausing to consider the great things which you have done for us, and renew

our faith with the remembrance of your incredible and eternal love.

C: Restore in us the joy of our salvation and grant us the double joy of sharing this salvation with the

world.

M: O Lord, we praise you also for answering our prayers and healing our diseases and sicknesses. You,

Lord, are the Great Physician of soul and body. You created our bodies, and we trust in your power to

heal our bodies according to your wisdom.

C: Make us truly thankful when you do heal us of our ailments, and give us courage to accept your

will for our lives when you decide to allow our sicknesses to persist, or when you allow them to

end our life.

M: Hear our prayer, O Lord, as we come to you through the atoning work of Jesus Christ and bring you

our personal concerns and petitions:

(Here special intercessions, silent or spoken, may be made.)

M: Finally, heavenly Father, we pray the prayer our Savior taught us:

The Lord’s Prayer C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as

in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against

us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory

are yours now and forever. Amen.
