    What’s Happening around Yavneh

  • A Renewed Yavneh Vision: A monthly article analyzing the new Yavneh mission statement.

    “Steadfast support of Medinat Yisrael”

Why this mitzvah above all other mitzvot? We didn’t single out “steadfast support of Lulav shaking” or “steadfast support of not wearing Shatnez;” why the focus on the State of Israel. The first Ashkenaz Chief Rabbi of Israel was Rav Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook Zt”l. Rav Kook was a majestic human being. He combined the rare blend of a Chassidic soul with a Lithuanian style background in learning and a consuming love for the people of Israel and humanity. Rav Kook had a very unique world-view. The great Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Hutner Zt”l, once said that “we all look at the world while standing in it, Rav Kook flies above and observes from on high.” Rav Kook’s understanding of the role of Am Yisrael, is enmeshed with an all-encompassing historical/spiritual outlook. He deeply believed that our return to Israel is not merely an opportunity for a safe haven, and it is not merely a chance to cross some more mitzvot off our bucket list. Rather, shivat tzion – the return to Israel is a movement that has been centuries in the making. It has animated our longing in the diaspora. It has colored our creativity throughout the ages. Israel is more than just a place on a map, it’s about our legacy and our role in the greater tapestry of Jewish civilization.

This grand view of our role in history is an empowering outlook for our children. We emphasize support for the State of Israel not just as an important mitzvah but because it enables us to view ourselves as part of something so much bigger and so much more meaningful then our petty quibbles and disagreements.

Am Yisrael Chai. Those positive words stand strongest when we speak of the amazing wonders and the unique gifts of the modern State of Israel.

  • Are You Ready for “The Great YKC?” By: Rabbi Moshe Dear

What is YKC?? It is our “Yediyot Klaliyot Chidon” scheduled for May of this school year. Through‐out the year, Rebbeyim and Morot have been reviewing and emphasizing the great body of Torah content knowledge over their last several years. Our educational goal is to create an opportunity for our Talmidim and Talmidot to review and consolidate knowledge which should be part of basic “Jewish Literacy,” what I call “Jewish IQ.” This includes basic information gleaned from Parsha, Chumash, Yediyot Klaliyot, and Navi curriculum with which we would want our Yavneh students to recall as well as they do the Lakers starting Five and the top 10 songs.

A sampling of the many of hundreds of possible questions includes:

    What Shevet was Esther from?

Who is buried in Me’orat Ha’machpela?

How many members in the Knesset?

What is the Hebrew date of Shavuot?

    Rambam stands for ____________?

Shiloh, Nov, and Givon are places where? _________________.

How many brachot in our weekday Shemoneh Esray?

Our goal is that after opportunities for each class to review, a written test will be given to grades    5‐8. The class with the highest grade average will earn a class trip! Following the written test, a separate “chidon” will be held in which the “top 10” scores will participate.

Each year, our curriculum takes the           opportunities to place emphasis on specific topics such as Shabbat, Brachot, History, and Jewish Torah Leaders. This year, we aim to place an emphasis on some “essential” Jewish knowledge.

Looking forward to an exciting chidon!

On Friday, February 14, in honor of   Purim Koton, the Middle School boys were treated to a delicious Kiddush with choulent (made by Rabbi Block),

  • 5th Graders Bring Historical Figures to Life This week the fifth grade classes are being treated to presentations on a variety of historical figures. Both the boys and girls have individually researched and organized information highlighting the person’s life,

achievements, hardships and lessons for us to learn. They used this information to write a multi‐paragraph essay. This week each student will teach the rest of the class about their historical figure using a visual aid

they created and wearing a period costume. The students chose a wide range of individuals including   medical revolutionaries,  government leaders , scientists, inventors and technology innovators. Along with

reaching learning objectives in research, writing, and social studies, the students also built their        presentation skills and amplified their interest in history.

  • Ivrit Breakfast with Morah Maya The first graders enjoyed a delicious breakfast as part of their Ivrit

program with Morah Maya . They had a buffet during which they had to ask in Ivrit what they would like to eat. The mothers, who came to help, served them what they asked for.  Everything was in Ivrit and the kids

did a great job practicing speaking in Ivrit!

  • Mishmar Fun By: David Silverman and Ariel Praw

This past Mishmar, on February 6th, was filled with excitement. The 5th – 8th grade boys enjoyed delicious food, an  exciting raffle and an inspiring story all while learning for the sick. The night  began with the boys coming in with their mindset of learning and finished the evening off with a thrilling raffle with basketballs and CDs. Overall the night was a big hit with both the       Rebbeyim and the kids.

Middle School Boys Challah Baking with Bat-Ami

    By: Matan Imanoel

On Friday the 7th of February we baked challot with the Bat Ami girls. During the preparation of the challah we had lots of fun shaping the dough. Most of all, the Bat‐Ami girls helped us and

made this experience extraordinary. After the challot were baked, Rabbi Block put a very interesting divrei torah inside the bag with the challah. Also, going back to the shaping of the dough, the

Bat‐Ami girls set up toppings for us which made the experi‐ence even more fun and the challot tasted even better. Over Shabbat I was really

satisfied with my challah and even made a bracha over it.

I’m really glad that the        Bat‐Ami gave us this amazing

    experience. In honor of

  • Happenings in the ECD As always we had a busy, fun month in our ECD! Safety and health was a big topic this month!

Nursery and Kindergarten students were vis-ited by Magen Yeladim International – “Safety Kid” child safety program. The yeladim learned about the ABC’s of safety: Ask for help, Bring a friend, Check first and Do tell.

They watched an informative and cute safety video in the Beit Midrash and then they went back to their classroom where the “Safety Kid” morah re-viewed the ABC’s of safety using puppets and story.

Dr. Shelyan (dentist) visited our ECD last week and spoke to the yeladim about the importance of keeping our teeth clean and healthy. He showed the children how to brush properly and how to floss. He spoke to them about foods that are good for us and which foods and drinks to avoid.

Nurse Ohana spoke to some of our classes this week about the importance of hand washing and not spreading germs. She also spoke about sugary drinks and told the yeladim that water is a much better and healthier choice.

The 100th Day of School was a lot of fun for the yeladim. They enjoyed various activities and projects!

Some cute quotes from our EC students when asked: “If I were the President I would…

We are looking forward to our annual PJ Breakfast and Purim celebration. Stay tuned!

  • Counselor’s Corner Recently, I had an opportunity to attend a parenting lecture given by Rabbi Yaakov Horowitz, the dean of Yeshiva Darchei Noam of Monsey and Director of Project Y.E.S. (Youth Enrichment Services). Rabbi Horowitz is recognized as a mechanech nonpareil. His topic “Art of Negotiating” really made an impression on me.

He started with a basic tenant: children’s objections to our rules or decisions are not a sign of disrespect, rather it is an affirmation and understanding that we as parents are the ones with authority or “power”. If this was not the case, there would never be conflict - children would just ignore our "rules" and do as they please.

Certainly, there are instances where there is no room for negotiation as what we say is the final word (i.e. safety issues). Most other times we can use disagreements as strong learning points for children of all ages. However, we as parents need to put in place the “rules of engagement” so our children know how to speak to us.

He mentioned 3 overlying rules for engaging our children in respectful, constructive conflict resolution: 1. Speak softly Children need to know that in order for them to be heard by their parents, they need to speak softly. If a child does raise his voice, parents should acknowledge his frustration and kindly ask him to come back when he is calmer. Most importantly, we the parents need to speak in a calm voice and retain our cool. 2. You may not say "No" When negotiating with their parents, children should refrain from using the word “no”. No does not lead to any successful dialogue - it is a conversation stopper. 3. Tell me why it's important A crucial element in trying to resolve conflict. Let them explain in their own words why they feel strongly about the matter. Giving them an opportunity to explain their feelings builds effective communication skills. It will let them know that their opinion is valued and will give us a greater insight into their thought process.

Children have a need to be respected and heard. If we engage our children in dialogue and allow them to verbalize their position - instead of the situation devolving into a shouting match, we can turn it into a teaching opportunity. And while they might still disagree with the outcome, they are much more likely to be accepting and receptive. More importantly, it will give them a solid foundation for conflict resolution and communication later on in life. Sara Alyeshmerni, M.S. School Counselor

March / April Fitness and Hydration

In the next two months Yavneh will focus on exercise and keeping hydrated with water. Along with eating and drinking right, exercise is the key to staying healthy and fit. Exercise for children does not mean working out in a gym, on the treadmill, or lifting weights but rather, playing and being physically active in gym class, during recess, dance lesson, basketball practice, riding a bike, or playing tag.

Benefits of regular exercise in children:

Having stronger muscles and bones Controlling body fat, having a leaner body, and less likely to become overweight Building endurance, strength, and flexibility Decreasing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and other serious illnesses such as

high blood pressure and heart disease Sleeping better at night Better at handling the challenges of schoolwork Having a better outlook on life and positive self-image

What can parents do at home?

Engage your children in a variety of age-appropriate activities Establish a regular schedule for physical activity Incorporate physical activity into the daily routine such as in household chores,

taking the stairs, parking further away Limit time spent in sedentary activities such as watching TV, going online, and

playing video games. Be active as a family and take walks together, nature hikes, learn a new sport Make sure your child stays well hydrated with water when playing, exercising, and

engaging in outdoor activities Keep it fun, so you can count on your children to come back for more Be a positive role model and embrace a healthy lifestyle yourself

In school we will be having fun exercises, games and contests, outdoor and indoor gym activities, raffles, prizes, and more; all to promote fitness and hydration. Stay tuned.   The earlier we instill the importance of exercise in our children, the more likely they will adopt a healthy lifestyle as adults.
