Portrait of a Rabbi
For a limited time only, a beautiful pencil
lithograph of Rabbi Goldberger, drawn by
Rabbi Hillel Shepard, will be available on a
first-come, first-served basis on the shul’s
website. The pencil drawing was inspired by a
photograph of Rabbi Goldberger taken by
Frank Storch, and, unbeknownst to the Rabbi,
was created for him as a labor of love.
Only 125 signed and numbered lithographs
were printed. Proceeds from the sale will
benefit the shul. Lithographs 26-125 are $275.
First-come, first-served for lower available
numbers.
For tax and maaser purposes, the value of
each picture is $175 with $100 going to the
shul. To purchase a portrait to benefit the shul
or for additional information, please go to
tiferesyisroel.org/app/register/litho.

קהילת תפארת ישראל
Rabbi Menachem Goldberger בס״ד
הרב מנחם ראובן הלוי גולדברגר
שליטא מרא דאתרא
From Our President
I would like to thank the entire kehilla for
your overwhelming support for myself and all
of the shul officers in this last election. We
never dreamed that our slate would be elected
unanimously, especially since we couldn’t
canvass within 50 yards of the voting area!
When Ari first asked me if I wanted to be
shul president (strategically timed after a
Shavuos all nighter and the Rebbetzin’s
cheesecake), I told him I had to think about it.
He persisted and two years later, I was ready
to come on board. I am now ready, having
recovered from my last board meeting 27
years ago. At that meeting, no one could help
me with my main question — “What’s the
meaning of life,” and someone else quoting
“Robert’s Rules of meeting protocol.” I’m
hoping these issues are no longer deal
breakers.
It’s exciting for me to be part of a shul
where so much of what happens is a result of
the hard work of our Rabbi and Rebbetzin and
initiatives of our shul membership. Thank
you!
On the practical side, one of my goals that I
mentioned at the election meeting is to
promote initiatives that can help the shul get
off the financial roller coaster. I learned from
Ari that almost every shul faces the same
challenge: Money is raised at the beginning of
the year; the funds start to run out, money
comes in from another event such as a
banquet, the money runs out, and so on.
I believe that we can end that cycle over
the next two years, enabling our shul to grow
in ways that we haven’t even thought of, as
we have a more reliable income stream. Here
are some ideas:
1. Subscription payments — Encourage our
membership to honor their financial commit-
ments through subscription (automatic)
payments from their bank or PayPal.
2. Pay smarter, not harder — Encourage
our membership to either pay their
commitments through their bank (no fees) or
through PayPal, adding in the PayPal fees so
the shul doesn’t lose out.
3. Set up ways for shul members to
purchase items that will also pay the shul the
money (e.g., Amazon Smile).
4. Your fundraising ideas.
5. Your fundraising ideas.
6. Refer to #4 and #5.
I am confident that the members of our
kehilla have a lot of other ideas and in the
coming months, I will be reaching out to our
membership to hear your ideas. Be on the
lookout for a survey that will be sent out
within the next few weeks, IY”H.
I look forward to gaining a greater
understanding of how we can continue to
leverage our talents, creativity, passion, and
insights, so that our kehilla will continue to
reach greater heights as a makom of kedusha,
achdus and continued growth. Have a
wonderful Shabbos!

Rabbi Moshe Twersky ZTZ"L
by Yehoshua Goldfinger
Rabbi Yaakov Hillel often says that a
Tzadik Nistar, a hidden Tzadik, is not
necessarily a giant hidden as a simple or even
wicked person, as it is often thought. He can
be a person who is a renowned Tzadik and a
Chacham, but through your interactions and
observance of the person, it becomes obvious
that what you see is just the tip of the iceberg.
That was Rabbi Moshe Twerky ZTZ”L
H”YD.
I was surprised on my first day in his Shiur
how shy, quiet and unassuming he was. He sat
down and began the lecture without much
fanfare, quickly and precisely explaining the
Gemarah and Reshonim with great clarity. He
quietly mentioned at the end of the shuir that
if anyone wanted to come to his house for a
Shabbos meal, he should just let him know. It
didn’t take long to discover that his Shabbos
table was famous in the Yeshiva for its Divrei
Torah, song and atmosphere. Bucharim
flocked to it, even though it meant an hour
and a half walk back to the Yeshiva. His
quiet, unassuming shiur also showed an
incredible breadth and depth. One of the other
Rabbeim once commented to me that Rabbi
Twersky “could easily be the Rosh Yeshivah
of all of us,” faculty included.
Rabbi Twersky’s father-in-law, Rabbi
Abba Berman, was in general critical of the
acceptance of Chumros as a Derech
HaAvodah. However, he felt there were a few
exceptions, his son-in-law being one of them,
and it was easy to see why. Although he was
exceedingly Medakdaik in Mitzvos,
concerning himself with even the most
extreme Shitos, he did it with such incredible
Tznius and privacy that you almost couldn’t
catch him. For example, at the Simchos of his
own children, he did not eat the food.
However, instead of having separate food
brought to his table setting, he was caught
quietly sneaking to a corner during a break in
the action to eat from a bag that he had
prepared. It was a game amongst the
Talmidim to catch him doing something
different, and then much conversation would
ensue to figure out why he did it. During his
Shivah, many other of his Chumros came out.
Apparently he did not eat vegetables the entire
year of Shmita and did not wear glasses
outside on Shabbos.
At the same time, he was completely
without airs and fully normal. He once
personally made a pot of noodles for a
chavrusa who had a brachos Shaila. Help was
needed one week with Tomchai Shabbos, so
Rabbi Twersky went and packed some
packages. After returning to the Yeshiva
following an absence, I asked him if my slot
for learning with him was still available.
Unfortunately it was taken by a group of three
Bachurim, but the way he told me was
unforgettable. He smiled, and gesturing
emphatically with his hand, said, “It took
three people to replace you!” He was once
aptly described as “a Maluch, but the most
normal Maluch you will ever see.”
In the Yeshiva, he was a symbol of genuine
Yiras Shomayim, Hasmadah and Taharah, and
his presence inspired and uplifted everyone
who had contact or even saw him, whether or
not they attended his Shiur. The thought of
him being taken from us in Talis and Tefilin,
Al Kiddush HaShem, is both a horrible,
shocking and immensely sorrowful event and
a haunting and awesome image. In his life, his
Torah, image and persona inspired so many
Talmidim and created so much Kiddush
Hashem and Yiras Shomayim. It is poignant
that his sudden Petirah has done the same. A
common sentiment that I have heard from a
number of the Talmidim is that perhaps his
Petirah needed to be in this way so that others
could learn about him and from him. He was a
force too important and potent to remain just
in the Yeshiva. His life needed to, and has
been, spread around the world.
There is more than can be said in this
article about Rabbi Moshe Twerski, ZTV”L
HY”D. Recordings of Hespadim for Rabbi
Moshe Twersky, as well as several of his
Shiurim are available free of charge to the
public through Yeshivas Toras Moshe’s
alumni association at nermichoel.org. Many
of the Hespadim and all of his Shiurim are in
English, and many articles are currently
available about him, giving a wonderful
glimpse into a rare individual.
Editor’s note: Rabbi Twersky was
murdered along with four others in a terrorist
attack on the morning of November 18, 2014,
while praying in the Kehilat Yaakov
Synagogue in Har Nof.

“Do not take revenge or bear a grudge” (Vayikra 19:18)
by Rabbi Shmuel Choueka
We are all familiar with the concept of revenge. If someone does evil
to us or holds back a favor from us, we are not permitted to retaliate
on the basis of his action. Rather, we must try to help out the person
regardless of what he did to us. The second half of the verse is not as
well-known but equally important. Do not bear a grudge means that if
someone holds back something from us, we are not allowed to remind
him of it even if we do him the favor. We may not say, “I'll lend you this
item even though you didn’t lend me the thing I asked you for.” The
Rambam says we are supposed to go even one step further and not
have his refusal in our mind when we do him the favor. This takes a
clear understanding that what happens to us is from Hashem. Even
though that individual refused to do me a favor, as far as I am
concerned, it wasn’t from him but from Hashem. Therefore I will do
him the favor and not even remember his refusal.
Although this is definitely not an easy task, if one accomplishes this
commandment he will reinforce his faith in Hashem and it will give
him the peace of mind which comes with the faith and trust in
Hashem. Shabbat Shalom.
