Upcoming Events

My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel - Discussion Group Saturday, March 1, after Oneg Shabbat. B'nai Havurah (registration through our website www.bnaihavurah.org)

Many people are reading Ari Shavit's book, My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel.

Do you wonder about the buzz? Have you read the book and want to talk about it with others?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, please join us at B'nai Havurah to talk. We will discuss the book in "bites" (i.e. chapters) to make it accessible to all.

For 8 weeks, we will discuss the book in one-chapter increments. This way, you join can join us for all 8 discussions or drop in to focus on specific chapters which are of most interest to you. For additional information, contact Liz Evans or Rabbi Evette.

Jewish Views of the Afterlife with Reb Simcha Raphael, Ph.D. Saturday, March 8, 9:30 am, B’nai Havurah Does Judaism believe in the afterlife? Unequivocally, the answer is yes! However, today many are unaware of traditional Jewish wisdom on life after death. Join us at B’nai Havurah on March 8th and explore Judaism's afterlife teachings, particularly in Kabbalistic mystical tradition. We shall endeavor to understand the relevance of these teachings in dealing with end-of-life issues in our times.

Author and Rabbinic Pastor Reb Simcha Raphael, Ph.D. will lead us in a provocative

and soul-searching Shabbat. In honor of the 7th of Adar, the Yahrzeit of Moshe

Rabeinu, Reb Simcha Raphael will offer a D'var, "Do Not Go Gentle Into the Night": Moses' Death in Torah

and Midrash; and lead us in discussion. While in Torah Moses seems to accept his death more passively, in

various Midrashim we find him arguing with God almost to the very end. It is clear that Moses did not “go

gentle into the night” but did “rage, rage against the dying of the light”, bargaining with God, as he often did in

his lifetime. We shall see how Moses himself went through the stages of dying, depicted by Dr. Kubler-Ross,

eventually accepting his own death with spiritual wisdom and equanimity.

A light Kiddush lunch will follow services, after which Reb Simcha will present "Jewish Views of the

Afterlife". Shabbat Service begins at 9:30 am, lunch and Reb Raphael’s talk begins at 11:30 am and 12:30 pm

respectively.

If you wish to join us for lunch (all are welcome) please make your reservation(s) here or call B'nai Havurah

at 303-388-4441. There is no cost for the program. B’nai Havurah, host for the service, lunch and

presentation, is located at 6445 E. Ohio Ave, Denver 80224.

National Gun Violence Prevention Shabbat (GVPS) Saturday, March 15, 9:30 am.

B'nai Havurah is joining other places of worship across the nation—including 12 Colorado congregations--in the National Gun Violence Prevention Shabbat March 14 -16. The purpose of this national shabbat is to remember those who have lost their lives to gunfire; pray for those whose lives have been forever changed because of the loss of a loved one; and continue the discussion on how we can work together to reduce gun violence. Family members of B’nai’s longtime and beloved custodian, Jose Diaz Luevano, will be attending. Tom Mauser, who lost his son Daniel to the gun violence at Columbine and author of Walking in Daniel’s Shoes, will be participating as a guest speaker to share how this tragic experience transformed his life. The Kiddush following the service is sponsored by a group of B’nai members working in the Jewish and broader faith community to prevent gun violence.

As part of the GVPS week-end activities, First Plymouth Church, will be hosting a candle light vigil for those who died of gun violence on Friday, March 14 from 6:30 pm – 7:30 at the corner of Colorado and Hampden Boulevards. They are seeking broad support from the faith community to remember each of the over 600 lives lost in Colorado to gun violence in 2012 with an individual candle holder. (2012 is the most recent year for which data is available.) Please let Alana Smart know if you plan to attend at [email protected]
