“Sin is nothing else than a morally bad act (St. Thomas), an act not in accord with reason informed by the Divine law.” God has given us free will, reason, and a sense of re-sponsibility. We are to use these gifts to live by His law. Sinning is what we do when we use our gifts of reason and free will in deviation from God’s law.

The Sin of Pride:

Pride/Vanity, is excessive belief in one's abilities, such that you don't give credit to God. St. Thomas Aquinas argued that all other sins stem from pride: "inordinate self-love is the cause of every sin… the root of pride is found to consist in man not being, in some way, subject to God and His rule."

Being proud of your country or your family isn’t a sin, neither is being proud of a job well done or of reaching a goal. Sinful pride is an unbalanced love of the self. It is super-confidence and self-esteem which ignores shortcomings. Pride is a sin when it becomes arrogance and van-ity. This is listed first because it is widely considered the most serious of the seven sins; pride often leads to the committing of other capital sins. Pride is manifest in vanity and narcissism about one’s appearance, intelligence, status, etc. Dante described pride as “love of self perverted to hatred and contempt for one's neighbor.”

Pride is the key which unlocks rationalization of other sins.

Pride was also the root of the Original Sin. Pride is the greatest of sins because it is the sum-mit of self-love and is directly opposed to submission to God. It is, therefore, the sin most de-tested by God, and the most severely punished. Pride is likewise the greatest sin because it is the fountainhead of the self-love in which all other sins take root: “From pride all perdition took its beginning.” (Tobit 4:14). Pride is the most dangerous of sins, because it blinds our understand-ing, and unless something finally makes us realize the truth, we are liable to go on, day after day, in a spiritual self-delusion, imagining our acts to be good and virtuous when certain habits actually may be vicious. When we are blinded by pride, we do not consider our talents and abilities as God’s gifts to us, but attribute our good qualities to ourselves, with the right to use them as we see fit. Everybody is infected with the Virus of Pride!

Searching into our pride is very important for obtaining a true knowledge of ourselves, and for making fruitful efforts to root out sin and vice from our life. Perhaps our pride takes the form of self-centeredness. We want to be the “hub of the wheel”; we want others to notice us. We are touchy and easily offended. Our pride goads us to seek fame, praise, admiration. We fall into vainglory. Or maybe our pride is manifested in a strong self-will. We find it hard to submit to others or to yield to their opinions. We are often overbearing, critical, given to arguing, inflated with a sense of superiority, inconsiderate of the rights of others. Or perhaps our pride conceals itself under the garb of self-pity and over sensitiveness. Resentment, harboring grudges, suspicion, and unexpressed hostility are included in it. Often this Pride is not recognized for what it is because it conceals itself as such, so we do not confess it as pride. And possibly our pride inclines us to self-complacency and vanity. We are likely to be shocked by faults in others, but quite satisfied with our own selves. Pride of superiority makes us want to control the lives of others, to impose ourselves on them, to “domineer” over them. It makes our will rigid and un-bending. It is a self-will and obstinacy that sets us against the will of God, opposes our neighbor and makes us inflexible in carrying out the dictates of our own self-love. The pride of ambition leads us to seek positions or offices of honor and dignity by which we prefer ourselves to others. We may have a pride of spiritual vanity, imagining ourselves to be perfect and our acts always virtuous or finding a thousand reasons to diminish their gravity or excuse our faults when we do acknowledge them. Our pride may dress itself in the guise of no restraint in our behavior, no modesty, indolent in action and work.

Humbleness and humility overcome the Sin of Pride.

SAINT JOSEPH’S DAY TABLE 2013

FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 2013

5 00 p.m.—7:00 p.m. In Italy, it was known to all the people that the patron saint of the family was St. Joseph. Word spread that when someone was gravely ill in the family the prayers to St. Joseph began in earnest. The person offering prayers promised in thanksgiving to cook and offer a “table” laden with food for anyone who was hungry. Thus in a sense the “alms” were given to announce to all that St. Joseph had granted (through our Lord) the plea presented. Every year a large table was set up during Lent which was naturally a time of fasting and abstaining from meat; thus the cus-tom of the table being meatless. AWESOME RELIGIOUS EDUCATION KIDAWESOME RELIGIOUS EDUCATION KIDSS Sweet Sunday Weekend was a huge success!

When I said the 7th graders at St. John the Baptist Parish were awesome, I meant it, but I did not realize how awesome they really are! On the weekend of February 9/10, these teens baked, “maked” and staffed the tables in the Narthex, selling $901.50 worth of cakes, cookies, caramel corn, chocolate dipped pretzels, cones filled with candy, brownies, just to name a few items. All proceeds from the Sweet Sunday Weekend bake sale will go directly into Catholic Charities’ MEND fund, “Meeting Emergency Needs with Dignity.” The MEND fund helps families in our neighborhood and parish by providing basic needs like food and rent assistance. Thanks everyone who donated and made this the best and the sweetest ever fund raiser. Another word of thanks to the parents who helped bake, Mary Schramer, Maureen Spathies, Larry Gedvilas, Katie McCall, Margaret Webb and Julie Roskuszka for all your help too!

Children’s Stewardship Corner

Here are just a few of the “offerings” to God from the youths of St. John’s.

Emily, Julia, Suyapa, Norby, Courtney, Hunter, Sophia, Nicole, Dirk, Alyssa, Zachary, Jack, Emily, Aurioles, Raul, Theresa, Bailey, Victoria, Melissa, Christopher, Molly, Giovanni and Katherine all donated to the church. Raul shoveled snow, did chores & helped

friends with homework. Theresa practiced the piano each day. Bailey helped her mom since school was on strike. Victoria helped her Grandma. Melissa cleaned. Christopher shoveled the driveway. Molly prayed. Kathe-rine cleaned her room.

Some of the talent of St. John’s youths are: singing, dancing, basketball, shoveling snow, math and playing the piano. Gifts from the youth's envelopes for Feb, 10, 2013 were $63.70

During Catholic Schools Week this year at Saint John the Baptist, one of the themes we celebrated was community and service. Mrs. Birutis, our Village President (who is now also our Director of Finance and Administration for St. John’s) read to our primary students. Chief Reever of the Winfield Police Department and Chief Dimenza of the Winfield Fire Department spoke to our junior high students. We are grateful for their support and the service they offer our school.

Thank you… to all who donated Ultra Receipts. 2,254 receipts were

collected, raising a total of $5,136.66 for our school! Thank you!

St. John the Baptist Council of Catholic Women is participating in the Bishop Blanchette Scholarship award given by the Joliet Diocese CCW to students attending a Catholic High School in the Joliet Diocese. Applications must be filed in St. John’s parish office by March 15th. If you are interested in applying, pick up a packet in the parish office or send an email requesting the information to:[email protected] An application must also be filed with the FACTS program by March 22. If your family has submitted a FACTS application for the upcoming year for another award, you are still eligible for the JDCCW-BBSF scholarship. Call FACTS at 1-800-390-4690 and

request to be added to the Joliet Diocesan Council of Catholic Women awards. The FACTS application is separate from what is sub-mitted to St. John’s parish. St. John’s CCW does not review the financial information an applicant submits. St. John’s CCW reviews the questions applicants and their parent(s) answer and recommendations from their school principal and/or our REO director, Mau-reen Brennan. An applicant also must have our pastor, Fr. Tom Cargo, sign that he or she is a member of the parish, extent of fam-ily involvement and any known extraordinary circumstances. St. John’s CCW can only submit one applicant to the JDCCW; there-fore the candidate selected from St. John’s will be based on the application information submitted to our parish office by March 15th. If you have further questions, contact Venessa Lopatka at 630-336-5414 or [email protected]

The next SJB Texas Hold’em School Fundraiser will be held on Satur-day, March 2nd, 2013. The past games have raised over $14,000 for the school and have been great fun for all that have attended. We are antici-pating another great turnout, so please reserve your seats ASAP by con-tacting Jim Pellicane at [email protected] .

As in the past, we are in need of volunteer dealers to help deal the games. The dealers have just as much fun as the players since the games are very light-hearted and friendly. We have a professional dealer train each volun-teer before the game so even if you don’t know how to play or deal, you can still volunteer and learn. Please contact Jim Pellicane if you are inter-ested in dealing. Jim can be reached at [email protected] or at 630-740-0930.

We are also in need of items to make this night a terrific success. Dona-tions of plates, napkins, pop, beer and baked goods are always appreci-ated.
