Pastor’s Ponderings . . . February 2020 A wife came to see her pastor full of hatred toward her husband. "I do not only want to get rid of him, I want to get even. Before I divorce him, I want to hurt him as much as he has me." The pastor suggested an ingenious plan, "Go home and act as if you really love your husband. Tell him how much he means to you. Praise him for every decent trait. Go out of your way to be as kind, considerate, and generous as possible. Spare no efforts to please him, to enjoy him. Make him believe you love him. After you've convinced him of your undying love and that you cannot live without him, then drop the bomb. Tell him that you're getting a divorce. That will really hurt him." With revenge in her eyes, she smiled and exclaimed, "Beautiful, beautiful. Will he ever be surprised!" And she did it with enthusiasm. Acting "as if." For two months she showed love, kindness, listening, giving, reinforcing, and sharing. When she didn't return, the pastor called, "Are you ready now to go through with the divorce?" "Divorce?" she exclaimed. "Never! I discovered I really do love him." Her actions had changed her feelings. Motion resulted in emotion. The ability to love is established not so much by enthusiastic promise as often repeated deeds. The Greek word agape (love) seems to have been virtually a Christian invention, a new word for a new thing (apart from about twenty occurrences in the Greek version of the Old Testament, it is almost non-existent before the New Testament). Agape draws its meaning directly from the revelation of God in Christ. It is not a form of natural affection, however, intense, but a supernatural fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22). It is a matter of will rather than feeling (for Christians must love even those they dislike -- Matt. 5:44-48). It is the basic element in Christ-likeness. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner I encourage you to read 1 Corinthians 13 and note what these verses have to say about the priority (vv. 1-3) and perpetuity (vv. 8-13) of love; note as well the shape of love (vv. 4-7) which they give. Blessings, Joy, and Love,
Pastor Chris

Winter Bible Study Thursday, February 6 at 6:30 p.m. There a number of things that we think Jesus said when in actuality they are not found in scripture and do not reflect the heart of Christ. If we were to have a face to face conversation with Jesus what do we think he would have to say about our relationship with God and how we live out our faith? In this study we will look at what I call myths that some people believe about their relationship with God and how Jesus feels about us.

He has met with the Michigan Conference relative to becoming a UCC Minister. We will be working toward a Dual Standing position. That will require him to take some online classes. He will be paired with a local area mentor. A Full Standing certification is a much longer process and is a onetime process. If you fail, you are not allowed to attempt again.
The trip to New York went well. The possibility of a trip to the Ark next year is being considered.

Jamie Kurtz is asking for cookies for the coffee hour on 12/29 that will be an Open House at the parsonage.
Financial Reports: Our income continues to lag behind our expenses. We are currently $8,000 behind. We need to ramp up the stewardship program. Tom A. moved to accept the November financial report. The motion was seconded by Jan S. and the motion was carried.
