Grant Community School
Every year, students in grades 3 through 5 take state tests in reading, writing, and math. Students in grade 5 also take a science test. The tests measure students’ knowledge of content standards, and give the State feedback on how schools are performing.
In spring of 2015, students took a new test for English language arts and math called the Smarter Balanced test. (Science is still tested by the Ore-gon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills).
When students take a new test, it's normal for success rates to change. It can take a while for students to adapt to the new style of the test, and success rates normally improve over time. After students have had some time to adjust to the Smarter Balanced Assessment, parents might choose to look at state test results as one way to gauge their student's progress in mastering state standards.
Parents can help students prepare for the Smarter Balanced test by tak-ing practice tests. Practice tests are available on the Oregon Depart-ment of Education's OAKS portal and on the Smarter Balanced Assess-ment Consortium's website. There's no need to register – simply log in as a guest.
Extra practice and encouragement at home will help a lot. Salem-Keizer Public Schools has prepared a series of flyers called Parents' Tips for Testing to help parents help students get ready for the Smarter Bal-anced test. The flyers are available for download below.
Parents have the right to exclude their students from some state tests. See this form from the Oregon Department of Education for more infor-mation.

Escuela Comunitaria Grant
Cada año, los estudiantes de 3o al 5o toman exámenes estatales en lectura, escritura, matemáticas y ciencias. Los estudiantes en 5º grado también toman un examen de ciencias. Los exámenes evalúan el conocimiento de los estu-diantes sobre el contenido de los estándares y proveen datos al Estado sobre el rendimiento de las escuelas.
En la primavera del 2015, los estudiantes tomarán un examen nuevo para artes del lenguaje y matemáticas llamado Smarter Balanced (el examen para estudios sociales y ciencias continuará siendo el Examen de Conocimientos y Destrezas de Oregon).
Cada vez que los alumnos hacen un nuevo examen, es normal que sus resulta-dos fluctúen ya que requieren de tiempo para adaptarse al estilo novedoso del examen; sin embargo, sus resultados mejoran con el transcurso del tiempo. Después de que pase el tiempo necesario para que los alumnos se adapten al nuevo examen Smarter Balanced, los padres tendrán la oportunidad de analizar los resultados del mismo como una de las maneras de medir el progreso realiza-do por los alumnos con vistas a dominar los estándares estatales.
Los padres de familia pueden ayudar a preparar a sus alumnos para el examen
Smarter Balanced con los exámenes de práctica. Los exámenes de práctica
están disponibles en OAKS portal (la página de inicio del programa OAKS) en el
sitio web del Departamento de Educación de Oregon y en el sitio web del
“Consorcio” de los exámenes “Smarter Balanced”. No hay necesidad de inscri-
birse – simplemente entre como “guest” (usuario).

Volunteers and com-munity partners play an important role in Salem-Keizer Public Schools. Each day in every school, volun-teers support and en-courage staff and stu-dents, take an active role in helping every student achieve. Through their contribu-tions of time, energy, inspiration and exper-tise, volunteers often report they receive more than they give.
Anyone may apply to become a volunteer. Before taking part in a volunteer activity, ap-plicants must complete a criminal history check.

TESTING SCHEDULE
Apply for secondary transfers MAR 1 – 31, 2019
Current fifth grade students (entering sixth grade in September) who
want to attend a school other than their assigned school next fall (2019-
20 school year) must apply for in-district transfer (IDT) between
March 1 and March 31, 2019.
IDT applications received after March 31, 2019, will not be
considered.
ID request forms can be picked up at any middle school office, and must
be completed and returned to the student’s assigned middle school dur-
ing the application date window. There is no guarantee a transfer request
will be approved. Students attending school on an IDT are not el-
igible for bus transportation.

El plazo de solicitud de trasferencias de escuelas intermedias es del
1 hasta el 31 de marzo de 2019.
Los estudiantes que actualmente asisten al 5º grado (que entrarán al 6º grado
en septiembre) que deseen asistir a una escuela diferente a la escuela asignada
para el próximo otoño (el ciclo escolar del 2019-20) deberán solicitar una
trasferencia dentro del distrito (IDT, por sus siglas en inglés) entre
el 1 y el 31 de marzo del 2019.
No se considerarán las solicitudes IDT recibidas después del 31 de
marzo de 2019.
Se puede obtener una solicitud IDT en la oficina de cualquier escuela interme-
dia. Usted debe completar y devolver la solicitud a su escuela intermedia asig-nada dentro del plazo de entrega. No se garantiza que la solicitud se apruebe.

SCHOOL MESSENGER
At the start of each school year, information from student registration forms is input into the student information da-tabase. SchoolMessenger, the system the district uses to send out phone notifi-cation to parents, re-ceives updated infor-mation from this data-base once each day. It is very important that parents keep their con-tact information current. Be sure to let your school office know if you have a new address, email or phone number. The parent or guardian marked as the primary contact in the student information system will receive automated com-munication. Messages will also be sent to the student’s home phone number contained in the data-base, if different from the primary contact phone number.

February 20 is Exclusion Day Questions regarding what immunization (s) is/are needed can
be answered by the school office. Questions about available re-
sources to receive immunizations can be directed to the Nurse
Help Line at 503-399-3376.
Where can I take my child for immunizations? HealthCare
provider? Many offices offer walk-in immunizations or nurse
immunization appointments. Best for most students.
Pharmacy– Some pharmacies offer immunizations for stu-
dents ages 7 and up with private health insurance. Contact
your local pharmacy for more information. Good for students
with private health insurance.
Marion County Health and Human Services offers immunizations by ap-
pointment, including for children who do not have insurance or a provid-

BOUNDARY ADJUSTMENT PROPOSAL
After receiving feedback from thousands in the com-munity, the School Board is scheduled to vote on a boundary adjustment proposal at its February 12 meeting. If approved, new boundaries for many schools in Salem and Keizer will go into effect in the fall. Parents of students assigned to a new school will receive a letter from the district as soon as possible following action by the School Board. The letter will describe the new school assignment and will include information about the continuity exemption and dead-line to apply. Information about the boundary adjust-ment proposal can be found on the district website at
