A belated Happy Groundhog Day, Lincoln’s Birthday, Valentine’s Day, Washington’s Birthday and President’s Day! Hope this finds everyone well and the flu bug gone for the year! I am so impressed with the number of hours you, our volunteers at Memorial, donate each year. The huge number we present at the December meeting is staggering. I decided that we have many unsung heroes and I would like to recognize them. So, I am going to highlight as many of the committees that make up our Auxiliary as the year allows. This month will be the By-Laws and Care Center.

The By-laws Committee, which consists of five members - the immediate past president, the current vice president, the chairperson, and two other members - do most of their work behind the scenes, but what they do affects how the Auxiliary continues to be organized and operate in an orderly manner. This year the members of the committee are: Shirley Wehrenberg, Chairperson, Sandy Jaskowiak, Dolores Miller, Sister Aquinas Kurtz, and Pat Lanaghan. Our job is to consider all proposed revisions and amendments to the Bylaws, Standing Rules, Policy Sheets, Organization Chart, and Service Descriptions of the Auxiliary. We then present these proposed amendments to the Auxiliary Executive Committee, the Auxiliary Executive Board, and our hospital CEO before they are finally approved by the membership at large at the Membership Meeting. These amendments often come about by changes that are called for at the wishes of the membership (such as our elimination of the March and September Quarterly Meetings as a result of the questionnaire that was sent out last year) and sometimes as a result of changes in Hospital policy or changes in the law (such as newly required testing and immunizations). It is an ever-changing world we live in and we need to keep up with the times. Memorial Care CenterThere are fourteen active volunteers at

the Care Center. The four greeters at the reception desk in the main lounge are Lynn Koehler, Dick Goers, Janet Chappel, Winnie Kane and Ruth Ogles. Their duty is to greet visitors and assist them in locating patient rooms. Judy Kennedy is our Book Cart volunteer. Judy takes our cart down each hall offering patients a variety of reading material to help fill in the hours between therapy, meals, naps and Bingo. The nine volunteers who make up the Bingo group are Jann Tribout, Frieda Vogt, Dolores Cange, Louise Voegtle, Linda Karczewski, Pat Jorgenson, Betty Lehr, Jean Joseph and Judie Louden. Bingo

every Wednesday from 1 to 4 pm. They get the tables ready with the Bingo cards and red chips used as covers, select and display a variety of prizes for both men and women, then visit each patient room inviting

everyone including visitors to play. They also assist staff with the transportation of the patients from their rooms to the lounge. They finish playing at 3:30 so that everyone has time to select a prize. Every patient wins a prize! Patients are returned to their rooms and all supplies are packed away ready for the next Wednesdays Bingo game. Ellen Goodman said, “I have never been especially impressed by the heroics of people convinced that they are about to change the world. I am more awed by those who struggle to make one small difference after another.”

There was a private tour of Memorial Hospital East held on January 23. Board members were invited to attend and

were given an inside look of the building, which is now fully enclosed and heated. The

hour-long tour provided a sneak peak of the new hospital, which is scheduled to admit its first patient in April 2016.
