If you are not familiar with the Christian liturgical calendar, the season of Lent may sound strange to you. The name lent is a Germanic word originally used to refer to the spring season. Over time, it replaced the Latin word, which means 40 days. In the Christian tradition, Jesus went to the wilderness for forty days. We Christians pray and grow our faith during this special period. In early Jesus’ time, people prepare their faith for baptism on Easter Sunday. Ash Wednesday marks the first day or the beginning of the season of Lent, which is 40 days prior to Easter. Sundays are not included in the count. What does it mean to keep the season of Lent in our Christian faith?

I would compare the meaning of Lent to an image of a mirror for our spiritual practice. As the mirror helps us to check our physical appearance, the season of Lent is a spiritual mirror for rediscovering ourselves and asking a question to ourselves, “who are we?” honestly before God or honestly to yourself. It is a great opportunity to unmask before God and self; and as trust builds, to unmask before others. Lent is a great chance for us to reflect on ourselves, and check in on our relationship with God and find more meaning in our life. This is not a time to make us feel guilt or shame, but a special time to reflect on our lives. I hope that you can have this journey for your own spiritual renewal opportunity.

Our church will offer Ash Wednesday service on February 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the sanctuary. We will receive the cross of ashes on our foreheads as a symbol of repentance, brokenness and a hope to return to God. Please consider attending to begin our spiritual renewal!

Blessings,

In a quarter devoted to Acts of Worship we have spent December reading what the scriptures teach about the Awe of God, January about what the scriptures say about prayer, and, in February, we will close out the quarter considering how we can worship in serving others. Is your ministry well balanced or is it one sided? What we are reading this quarter could help put things in perspective and provide a better balance to our Christian Life. Consider this: "Think about prayer not as a power we tap, but as a privilege we exercise."

The Heifer International Ministry is excited to try a new fundraiser this year to help us towards our goal of filling an ark. California Clothing Recyclers (www.californiaclothing.net) is a leader in the used clothing industry, serving the Sacramento region and Northern California. Annually they divert close to 3.5 million lbs. of unwanted used clothing from Sacramento area landfills. How do they do this? Organizations like ours hold clothing drives and California Clothing Recyclers pays $0.13 per pound for what we collect. Then California Clothing Recyclers sorts the clothes: usable clothing is sold in developing countries for pennies and unusable clothing is shredded and recycled into industrial rags. And that is what makes this opportunity so unique — California Clothing Recyclers accepts items that are torn, stained, and unwearable! Lots of charities and organizations want your gently used items but we want your UNgently used items too!

Jiffy Fixers’

Report

By Jim Allen (with additional commentary by

the official Jiffy Fixer Jingle Writer

Dedra Beauchamp)

One of the many ongoing projects that the Jiffy Fixers manage is the repair and maintenance of the sanctuary chairs. They have replaced damaged seats and arm handles and will replace missing leg glides in the near future. Note: Where glides are missing, there is dirt and grass accumulated in the leg. It looks like they may have been used out on the lawn and sunk in. Evidently when they were picked up, the glides were pulled out. To keep this from happening again, please avoid using these chairs off of paved surfaces.

Jim Allen and Sandy Milne are building a shelf to be

installed in the Narthex to help contain our various flyers,

sign-up sheets, clipboards, etc., etc., etc.

Who remembers the old Dr. Pepper commercial jingle? (I’m a Pepper, He’s a Pepper, She’s a Pepper, Wouldn’t you like to be a Pepper too?) Now sing along with me…

How to Deal with our Teens & their Social Media Persona

By Joy Gilberg, Youth Director

Kids nowadays are all about social media and social networking. Their lives are so intertwined with their Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Snapchat accounts. Rarely will you find a teenager not on his or her smartphone, iPod, or tablet. It's difficult nowadays to have a conversation with your child giving you their full 30 seconds of attention and not having to compete with their gadgets. The selfies, and the LOLs, and the emojis have now dominated our kids' waking moments.

So we as parents, how do we deal with them when we know that who they really are is so much different that what they seem to be in their social media world? When we see signs that raise red flags telling us that the "fakeness" in social media is now overtaking the true identities of our children, what do we do?

Author and social culture analyst Walt Mueller, who is also a veteran youth worker, wrote in his article "Curating Themselves to Death" the danger of the digital world wherein the young people and young adults are trapped into this cultural trend of always creating, tweaking, and revising themselves so they can constantly post their "me" exhibit to the media world in order to win the most gazes, the most likes, and the most approvals. In effect, this is dangerous because, like museum curators, they do whatever it takes including sacrificing their virtues, their true selves and identities to have the unbridled freedom to be all things to all people. Mueller then advocated that we need to launch our kids onto the journey to true freedom that comes with finding one's true identity in Christ rather than the never-ending cycle of cultural expectations. Here are four steps you can take with your kids to help them in this quest.

1. Get to know each of your kids intimately. Pray that you can lead your kids to recognize their unique God-given abilities and giftedness. Then, encourage them to develop and embrace those gifts and abilities in service to God and others.

2. Follow them in their social media accounts in an effort to know their curated selves. This means you are checking and observing how they are curating and presenting themselves in the digital world. Check out their photos, their posts and their comments. Yes, we are to become like a "stalker" of sorts in order to truly help our kids.

3. Lovingly and gracefully challenge their curated lies, while enthusiastically affirming their honesty. Converse with them about compromised presentations of themselves that clearly evidence conformity to extreme cultural expectations. Ask them, "Is that really who you are?" Share your own identity struggles and the results of crafting and living lies. Remind them that the truth about themselves will eventually come to light. But don't forget to also affirm joyfully when they tell the truth about themselves.

Page 9

4. Finally, help them see that their quest to find their identities will only be satisfied if they seek to find and develop their identities in Christ. Help them to see that their hun-ger for acceptance is rooted in their sin and brokenness. Tell them their hunger pains are cries for God that at times they foolishly will attempt to satisfy through seeking acceptance in the eyes of others. Encourage them to curate their hearts and minds through seeking God and practicing spiritual disciplines.

Let's pray and work toward helping our kids conform themselves to the image of Christ, rather than curating themselves into the dead end of culturally shaped identities. Augustine has said, "You have made us for Yourself, and our hearts are restless, until they can find rest in you."

We have a wheelchair for use on campus. It is kept in the chair/supply closet located just outside the Narthex door nearest the upper handicapped parking lot. If it is needed, you may ask an usher to access it for you on Sunday mornings.

Large print bulletins and hymnals are available for worship services.

Help keep the Church Calendar up-to-date and accurate! Notify the Church Office when scheduling, changing, or cancelling meetings and events. If details are undecided, ask the Church Office to pencil it in as “tentative.”

A carpet sweeper is placed handily in the coed bathroom for our use in cleaning up after ourselves following worship. We want to leave the sanctuary clean for the congregation that follows us. So if you see crumbs, etc. be a kitchen police and whisk over the area please!

On the 3rd Saturday of each month, Ruby and Wayde Wicker reach out to the homeless community in Fair Oaks, Carmichael, and downtown Sacramento by providing tarps for shelter in the winter and shade in the summer. They have become known for their ministry and are recognized by people in need. However, Ruby and Wayde need our help to continue helping others. Tarps may be dropped off in the collection bin in the Narthex. Monetary donations may be placed in the offering plate. (Please write “Tarps” in the memo line of a check or on the outside of an envelope for a cash donation.)

Ruby and Wayde also take clothing to the homeless community. Wintertime sees an increase in the need for gloves and hats. Clothing items may also be left in the “Tarp” collection bins in the Narthex.

For more information about this outreach ministry or how you can help, please see Ruby or Wayde. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

When Pack 215 began talking about our involvement in the Fair Oaks Christmas parade for 2014, it didn't take long for the membership to come to the conclusion that we wanted our Scouts to make a bigger impact and really be noticed. After some brain storming and agreement on a small budget, we decided the Pack would build a float to show off in the parade.

We planned 3 two-hour build sessions to construct the Pack 215 float. For each build day attended, the Scouts received a ticket in a drawing for a random chance to ride on the float during the parade.

Day One challenged us with some drizzly weather. When the calls came in asking if the build was canceled due to weather, the response that the float would not get built if the Scouts don't build it was all they needed to hear. At 6 pm, we had 14 Scouts gathered around the shop table outlining the plans for the float. We broke into three teams and three building projects. The design included building a campfire with benches, a tent with information about what we do, and the tow rig was to be converted into a pine wood derby car. Much planning was done that evening by the Scouts about what would take place over the next few weeks.

Build Session #2 brought better weather as 14 Scouts arrived ready to work. The camp fire crew finished the benches and were well on their way to making the mock fire come to life. The tent crew erected the frame and began painting the side panels of the tent structure. The pinewood derby car crew cut the final shapes of the car in plywood and also began the painting process.

Day 3 met us with a deluge of rain! Some were late due to roadway flooding, but a total of 16 scouts showed up to finish the job. We were all working in tight quarters completing the painting and adding more color to our fire. By 8 pm we had reached our goal and were soaking wet!

With the muscle of a few active parents, we assembled the parts the morning of the parade. The Pack received lots of ooh's and aah's all along the parade route. The 24 Scouts who had a chance to

work on the float were very proud of what they had built. They learned how to plan, schedule tasks, and to work as a team to reach a common goal. They cut lumber and drove screws, hammered nails and staples, and painted the float themselves working in less than perfect conditions to reach the goal. They got to show what they can do at the parade, but the best

things they learned didn't come from the parade. They came from the journey to get them there.

After the parade, some parents asked where we would store all the stuff for next year's parade. The looks on the Scouts faces told us all there was no need to store anything, they will be ready to build something new, bigger and better in 2015!

What is Scrip? It’s fundraising while you shop! Scrip fundraising gift cards are the same gift cards you would normally purchase from a retailer in your local retail stores, and they work the same way. You’ll find cards you can use at grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, movie theaters, home improvement stores, and more. You are paying full face value for a gift card that can be used in place of cash, checks, or credit cards for everyday shopping. The Church Office will place a group order on the dates listed below. We pay a reduced cost for the gift card and immediately “earn” the difference.

How Do I Place an Order? Orders may be

1. handed to Kathy Glass or Geri Ann Alviso on a Sunday

2. placed in the blue pouch on the Narthex Bulletin Board (lower right corner)

Book Club

February’s Book Club selection is The Fever Tree by Jennifer McVeigh. From Amazon.com: “Frances Irvine, left destitute in the wake of her father’s sudden death, has been forced to abandon her life of wealth and privilege in London and emigrate to the Southern Cape of Africa. 1880 South Africa is a country torn apart by greed. In this remote and inhospitable land she becomes entangled with two very different men—one driven by ambition, the other by his ideals. Only when the rumor of an epidemic takes her into the dark heart of the diamond mines does Frances see her road to happiness. But before she can follow that path, Frances must choose between passion and integrity, between her desire for the man who captured her heart and her duty to the man who saved her from near ruin, a decision that will have devastating consequences.”

Business Directory

Q: Why do we have a business directory in a church newsletter?

A: The donations provided by the above businesses help offset the cost of publishing a monthly newsletter.

Q: Who are the people behind these businesses?

A: They are members or regular attendees who consider FOUMC their church home and wish to share their business talents with their church family.

Q: Can I be listed in the business directory each month?

A: Yes! Contact the church office at 961-6631 or [email protected] to learn more.

After an unintentional year-long hiatus, we are re-instating the Business Directory in the monthly Acorn newsletter! Your participation includes a business-card-size ad on the Business Directory page located towards the back of the newsletter every month with one business each month spotlighted on the front page of the newsletter. Featured businesses on the front page will rotate monthly. We are asking for a $20 donation to be included for the whole year. However, donations, ad size, and frequency are up to your discretion. Contact the Church Office if you are interested: 961-6631 or [email protected].
