The perfect way: One Sunday assisting, the next Sunday teaching! For example, if you assist on June 8, you can teach on June 15. If you prefer to teach only or to assist only, that would be okay, too.
Do we have 14 men and women (including teens) willing to commit to important children’s Christian education? You don’t have to be a teacher. The lessons are easy to follow. The only requirement is that you enjoy the children. They are a terrific group.

Our church is facing significant budgetary challenges. The annual budget deficit has been drawing our attention and concern for future church ministries. As a pastor, I have been wrestling to find ways of how to renew our church. I proposed two ways to the Church Council: spiritual renewal and financial renewal. For spiritual renewal the Pathway to Renewal team was formed and organized the spiritual retreat this past February. For a plan to fix our annual budget deficit, the Church Council approved a Finance Task Force team. Let me briefly introduce our Finance Task Force team and the timeline for their mission to you.

Our goal is to fix the annual budget deficit within two years. Our Finance Task Force team consists of 3 Core Teams focusing on assigned areas of the budget. • Church Council Core Team: Barbara Sims
and Cynthia Wold. (Trustees may join as advisory team.) Assigned Area: Outside rental income, increasing rental income
• Finance Core Team: Ellen Frosch and Karlene Brown. Assigned Area: Operational budget (church expenses and Little Methodist School), Conference resources—expert who will give us priorities in terms of reducing our church expenses
• Staff Parish Relations Committee Core Team: Gretchen Hatfield and Cheryl Raney. Assigned Area: Church staff (music director, administrative assistant, Pastor, nursery care, groundskeeper/landscaper, LMS director), education of personnel expenses
Each Core Team will work independently to gather data, ideas, and suggestions in their assigned areas from May to June. And then the Finance Task Force will meet as a group to discuss the findings of the Core Teams from July to September. At this time, the Finance Task Force team will make a proposal to the October Church Council meeting for discussion and approval. Lastly, the Finance Task Force will present the proposal to our Charge Conference on Sunday, November 23rd. During this whole process, the Finance Task Force team will be closely communicating with the Church Council and the congregation through informational meetings and other channels. For example, we are going to hold two informational meetings in August and October. We are going to put a ‘response box’ in the Narthex area. We look forward to hearing your suggestions and ideas. We welcome your thoughtful comments. Please be reminded of these words from Ephesians 4:23 as we work through these challenges, “Everything connected with that old way of life has to go.”
I hope that we continue our wonderful ministries here at Fair Oaks United Methodist Church. The healthy budget with sound spirituality is very important for our mission. As we move forward, I would like to ask for your prayers for successful financial renewal and support for our Finance Task Force team.

Prayer Requests
Please pray for Sue Easterbrook. She has been diagnosed with lung cancer and will begin chemotherapy with 3 sessions per week to last through October if she can tolerate it. Please don't call or visit until she has a better idea what to expect from treatments. Please pray for strength, comfort and the best possible outcome.
The Mittendorfs ask us to keep them in our prayers. They are hoping to get their own home by August 14th so they can finally set roots. Please pray that this will happen.
Joy Gilberg asks prayers for son Jolo who will go on an 8th grade field trip to Washington DC and NY from March 31 to June 5th. Please pray for Jolo's and all of the group's well being, safety and protection. And please pray that they will have fun learning on this trip.
Joanne asks prayers for Dick Cossairt's son, Mark, who had surgery for an ongoing
problem with his right leg. Please pray for healing and recovery.
Ed Klanjac's sister Bev has mouth cancer. Please pray for comfort and healing for Bev. She and her family need prayers for peace of mind.
Ruby Wicker's Grama Floss in upstate New York is gravely ill. Ruby's aunt Janet is caring for Grama Floss at home. Please pray for comfort and peace of mind for Grama Floss and her family.
Linda Robinson's mother Dorothy passed away last month. Please pray for peace
of mind for the family.
Please also continue praying for Steve Robinson’s health.
Lynn Sabatini asks prayers for John Hall, who is a quadriplegic and undergoing at least 4 surgeries to regain partial use of his hands. Please pray for success, healing and comfort.

What is Scrip?
It’s fundraising while you shop! Scrip fundraising gift cards are the same gift cards you would normally purchase from a retailer in your local retail stores, and they work the same way. You’ll find cards you can use at grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, movie theaters, home improvement stores, and almost any business that accepts gift cards.
How Does It Work?
Use the attached order sheet to place an order. You are paying full face value for a gift card that can be used in place of cash, checks, or credit cards for everyday shopping. If you purchase a $25 Wal-Mart gift card then you will receive a gift card worth $25! The Church Office will place a group order on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month. We pay a reduced cost for the gift card and immediately “earn” the difference. For the $25 Wal-Mart gift card that you purchase the church will earn $0.62 (2.5%). Different stores offer different fundraising percentages. Planning a nice dinner out at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse? A $50 gift card will result in $5 (10%) for the church! It really is that easy!
Why Use Scrip?
It is a pain-free, on-going, year-round way to raise extra funds for the church. I have been using Scrip through my kids’ school for 7 years without any problems. Most of the time, I purchase
Arco and Wal-Mart gift cards as those are everyday places that I shop at all the time. At the holidays, I will get Barnes & Noble gift cards for all my nieces and nephews. This is money that I would spend anyway but by using Scrip the church will also benefit from my purchase not just the store!
Volunteers?
I could really use a partner (or two) in this endeavor to be the spokesperson on Sundays. The position would require verbal announcements before worship, collecting orders, answering questions, and delivering scrip gift cards on Sundays. I will handle the paper-pushing grunt work during the week. This will enable me to maintain a work/worship boundary. Let me know if you are interested in being involved in this way!

First of all, I want to thank everyone who supported our Ice Cream Social and Talent Show Fundraiser last April 26. We were able to raise enough funds to augment our youth budget for our upcoming summer missions event. And I am so grateful to God for leading us and guiding us into the planning and coordination of this significant event. We are also thankful for several churches in our circuit who have come aboard in partnership with us.
June 16-20, 2014 is when the United Methodist Church and the Sacramento community come together to create a meaningful opportunity for the love of God to be manifested deeper and wider. SWAG's Summer Missions week is called Do Something... Deep and Wide! We believe that we cannot go wider in reaching out to the community unless we go deeper in our spirituality as well. Hence, the main focus of our missions week is growing deeper in knowing the power of the Holy Spirit and the love of Christ in us in order to be wider and more fruitful in our community service. We will spend time studying scriptures and serving the different organizations who are already working among the needy in our community. We will also attempt to visit our neighbors and make new friends in order to create new connections and build bridges of hope among the people in our midst. We pray that as we do all these things, the depth and height and breadth and length of the love of God will be fully revealed in the hearts and lives of the people we encounter and serve during this week. (Eph. 3:16-20)
We also pray that whatever God allows us to start at this time may be continued and become a growing relationship between our church families and community for a long time.
Lastly, we would like to invite not only the young people from our church but everyone who has the heart, the time, and the willingness to be a part of this movement. We would love to have you serve alongside us, if not for the whole week, then maybe on a day to day basis. Or you can also choose to support us by volunteering to be a driver, be a photographer, or help the kitchen crew serve lunch and dinner for the kids. Our official logo for this event shows a heart and a circle of many hands. Just like the idea in this design, the more hands we have joined together, the bigger and deeper the show of love to our community would be. So we are calling everyone to join us and together we can do something deeper in God's love and grow wider in our service for our community.

Heifer Happenings by Virginia Guffey
Our FILL AN ARK is progressing — slowly; maybe we have “Spring Fever”? So what do we do next? Plans are in the works: Be sure to be at church on Sunday, July 13.
We received a lovely thank you letter for our 2013 ARK from Jill Kilty Newburn, our local representative. (Her official title is “Area Community Engagement Manager.”) She is based in Los Altos Hills, CA. She has volunteered to come speak to us, and we are working on details to have a special “Heifer Sunday” on July 13 — but more about that in the July issue of the Acorn. Don’t miss it!
In her letter, Jill writes, “your support and commitment to sustainable solutions means so much to our project partners around the world. … Heifer has the chance to lead what has been called the livestock revolution — to demonstrate to the world the power and potential of the family farmer — the majority of them women. … Heifer has some exiting new programs toward ending hunger and poverty; not managing it or easing it — ending it.”
One example of a woman family farmer is Enithe Luxius. She lives in Haiti where a devastating flood wiped out all the family’s livestock. So many people in Haiti live in extreme poverty. And that was made worse by the earthquake that destroyed so many buildings and caused more flooding.
This is why Heifer is working so hard to get as many families as possible to support themselves. For Enithe and 100 other families in her region that opportunity came in the form of rabbits and training. Rabbits are easy to raise and their manure can be applied directly to gardens without composting, so they begin making an impact the day they arrive. And, because rabbits multiply so rapidly, the impact quickly spreads as families Pass on the Gift.
The four rabbits Enithe received soon became 17! Enithe is excited about raising even more rabbits and maybe one day saving enough money to buy a house that is in an area where her children and her rabbits will be less vulnerable to the frequent flooding.
Doesn’t it make you feel good to be a part of helping someone like Enithe and her family? If so, remember to look over our Heifer/Sharing Table. Remember, there are several occasions in June to send an “In Honor” card: weddings, Father’s Day, graduations, birthdays, even end-of-school acknowledgements for achievements or “work well done.”

Summer!

Our choir is taking a well-deserved break over the summer, but we still want to have a chance to enjoy special music before the sermon each Sunday. From June 8th until the end of August, there are several spots to fill. If you are interested in singing or playing an instrument during that time, please let me know through email or phone (or on Sunday mornings at
church) and we can schedule a Sunday for you! If you need accompaniment and/or a rehearsal with me, I am more than happy to assist.

LIBRARY NOW OPEN!
2nd Sundays after Worship!
Anne Rohwer will staff our Church Library on the 2nd Sunday of each month after worship until 11:30 am. Come over and see what books we have that may peak your interest! All books are available for check out. Refreshments are allowed in the library so don’t let that cup of coffee keep you away!
I wish to thank those who donated baked goods and to those who purchased our goods. We appreciate you. Special thanks to all those who worked so hard to make it successful. We collected $222 and were happy with the outcome.

Many groups share the use of our Church Kitchen. Please help us keep the kitchen tidy by cleaning and returning items you use to their appointed storage place. Launder and return any soiled table cloths, towels, or washrags you have used to the linen drawers. Date all items stored in the refrigerator/freezers and label them with your group's name. (Unlabeled food items will be discarded to safeguard everyone's health.) Consideration of others is crucial, so if you spill, please clean it up. Remember our mothers don't work here. So, leave the kitchen the way you would like to find it. Thank you!
Many thanks to the groups who have faithfully prepared and served coffee and goodies for the past 6 months. The Tongan Ministry spoils us on the first Sunday of each month. The Maret family provides our treats each second Sunday; the Phinney/Couch/Floyd Team steps up each third Sunday; and the Wickers and Lora Allen serve each fourth Sunday. Many thanks to the Hospitality Ministry which have signed on to host each fifth Sunday. We all appreciate the contributions some of you have made through donations of cash or goodies to share. Please join us following worship services each Sunday for conversation and fellowship.

Finance Ministry by Ellen Frosch We are blessed to have a church with many outreach ministries. That being said, we also continue to have a budget shortfall. All of us should know by now that our expenses are exceeding our income and that we cannot continue with the status quo. In order to plan for the future of this church, there is a Finance Task Force team forming that will be looking at our options to bridge the gap between income and expenses. Pastor Jeong will speak more about the task force team in an upcoming letter and its’ goal of closing the income/expense gap within two years [see also page 2 of this Acorn]. We can all look forward to the energy and vitality that will come as a result of having a plan in place.
Below is the report of income and expenses for the month of April.

for a potential loan we booked as income this month and used to pay down the one loan our church has. Excluding these two items, our “regular giving” income for April was $10,894.
Trustees Ministry by Lance Bach There may be the possibility of having a new Eagle Scout project in the next few months. Maita Kim, an Eagle Scout candidate has presented a proposal for a replacement retaining wall near the west parking lot. This would complete the retaining wall for the entire west side, giving us a more unified and strong wall to check erosion and beautify the area. We are currently looking into the proposal.
The new security cameras have multiplied. As they can be purchased, new security cameras are being installed by Dale Doty and tied to an off site account. This gives us greater flexibility in keeping our campus secure.
In the very near future, we will be getting an arborist to look at the Oak trees (and various other trees) in the playground area of LMS. They have become a safety issue so trimming is necessary to reduce the possibility of a limb falling and doing personal and property damage to both the church and our neighbors.
Jiffy Fixers have added lighting to one of the storage sheds and will continue to enhance the interiors of both sheds and provide needed ventilation for volatile products stored there. Trustees will be looking into sealing the roofs of both containers to reduce the water leakage during the winter months.

Why study the Bible?
My answer is usually, “Because it is fun” or “because it is so interesting.” I believe both of those things. The Old Testament is full of absorbing history and prophecy. The New Testament is the salvation message of Christ. But with all that the better answer is the one taken from an American Standard publication which follows:
“Churches are abandoning Sunday school at an alarming rate. Those who approve this trend are heard to say, ‘Young people and many adults sit behind desks all week. How can we expect them to sit for an hour on Sunday morning right before sitting through an hour of worship?’ It is better, they propose, to simplify Sundays by eliminating Sunday school altogether. Children will receive instruction at youth group meetings, and adults have small-group meetings during the week. “An unfortunate consequence of canceling Sunday school is that many believers never receive comprehensive biblical instruction. Though youth and small-group curriculum may be Bible-based, it is often topical in nature. So unless preachers work through the books of the Bible comprehensively in sermons, the average believer might never receive instruction on certain sections of the Bible.”
During the summer quarter the theme for the FOUMC Adult Sunday School Class will be “The People of God Set Priorities.” Our attention will be focused on 1 and 2 Corinthians and we will test that against some Old Testament background. I guarantee it will be fun and interesting.

Viriginia Grabbe has a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Counseling and leads the Women’s Support Group on alternating Monday evenings from 6:30-8:00 pm in the Teen Room (backside of Potter next to the Nursery). The focus of the Women’s Support Group is to identify hurts, habits or hang-ups that hinder our being in relationship with God. The May luncheon of the Over 80s Group was sheer merriment. Nobody went hungry! And Virginia Grabbe and Mary McCollum earned $2.34 in tips for their waitressing. This they donated to the Mary House coin collection on Sunday. Sharing memories is always interesting.
The next gathering will be early September at Virginia Grabbe’s home. We plan to celebrate two members graduating into the 90s! Plan to join the fun.

The Tribes of Israel are gathering again this summer! We’ll explore Nazareth with the Marketplace, the Barnyard, Hometown Huddles, and even visit Mary to learn about Jesus when he was a boy.
Bring your children and enjoy a family meal at 5 pm. Then we will spend 2 hours in Nazareth each evening. Preschoolers who are out of diapers through 6th graders are invited to journey with us to Nazareth! Older youth and grown ups are welcome to join in with the children. Parents of younger children are encouraged to participate with them.
