I am often asked what relevance this ancient text has in our post-modern society – there, you see, I said I'd been exercising my mind! My answer is that it holds the big story of the human relationship with God from ancient times to two millennia ago. Importantly, it's also a signpost to the future, telling us about that movable time called 'now'. The Old Testament people were as rebellious, fractious and selfish as we are – and as godly, generous and brave too. So were the New Testament people. Their story helps us understand ourselves because they were just like us. Crucially, it helps us understand how to relate to God and to each other in peace. Dipping randomly into the Bible, then, I landed on this text from Paul's first letter to Timothy: 'Train yourself in godliness, for while physical training is of some value, godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.' How apt! We don't need to fret about joining a gym – but we do need to work to keep our good Christian spirit in peak condition. That means reflecting on our own actions and thoughts, and those of others, measuring them against our Bible values. The kindness and care shown to me during my recovery are a good place for me to start. My prayer for us all, then, is this: Lord, help us to give ourselves time to be open to you in our lives. Strengthen us to give ourselves a break from our relationship with ourselves, and to make a lasting one with you. Amen. GIVE US A BREAK...

As you probably know, I have been off since 5th December with a fractured patella. No fun! However, I've had

such kindness shown me that it almost compensates for the sorrow of missing all the Christmas services. Thank

you, sincerely.

I intend to try to get more physical exercise this year - my standard New Year Resolution! But I can't yet:; at

the time of writing, I still have the plaster cast on. So I've been doing mental exercises instead: crosswords and

easy reading first, then on to some more demanding stuff. And I've been looking at the Bible.

On Desert Island Discs, the castaway was always given the Bible and Shakespeare. Today people might make

different choices, but in fact those two books are brilliant resources for reflection, and are as full of relevance

to us today as they were to our ancestors. We have dozens of quotes from them in our everyday language – like

'No peace for the wicked,' (Isaiah 57 v21) and 'Too much of a good thing,' (As You Like It Act 4 sc 1). Just

opening the Bible at random can produce results if we reflect on what we read both in its own context and in

ours. I am often asked what relevance this ancient text has in our post-modern society – there, you see, I said I'd

been exercising my mind! My answer is that it holds the big story of the human relationship with God from

ancient times to two millennia ago. Importantly, it's also a signpost to the future, telling us about that movable

time called 'now'. The Old Testament people were as rebellious, fractious and selfish as we are – and as godly,

generous and brave too. So were the New Testament people. Their story helps us understand ourselves because

they were just like us. Crucially, it helps us understand how to relate to God and to each other in peace.

Dipping randomly into the Bible, then, I landed on this text from Paul's first letter to Timothy:

'Train yourself in godliness, for while physical training is of some

value, godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for

both the present life and the life to come.'

How apt! We don't need to fret about joining a gym – but we do need

to work to keep our good Christian spirit in peak condition. That

means reflecting on our own actions and thoughts, and those of

others, measuring them against our Bible values. The kindness and

care shown to me during my recovery are a good place for me to

start.

My prayer for us all, then, is this: Lord, help us to give ourselves

time to be open to you in our lives. Strengthen us to give ourselves a

break from our relationship with ourselves, and to make a lasting one

with you. Amen.

SWINFORD WI

Happy New Year to all Swinford residents!

Our programme for this year got off to a good start with

Mary McCulloch and her brother David telling us all

about their holiday to South East Asia. We saw some

wonderful photographs which gave us a taste of the

history, culture and architecture of Thailand, Vietnam,

Saigon and Hanoi, to name a few. From the floating

houses, markets with stalls absolutely packed with

wonderful fruit and vegetables, to the conical hats worn

to keep out the sun, we got an insight into the life of the

happy smiling children and the warm, friendly people.

On 14th February, Janet Haynes will be our speaker and

the title of her talk is 'My Journey to the Palace' which

sounds very intriguing! All will be explained next

month when we hope to have Linda O'Reardon back,

she is currently not very well so I'm sure you will all

join me in wishing her a speedy recovery.

FOOD INSTEAD OF CHRISTMAS CARDS

Hopefully everybody had a really nice Christmas and a

good start to the New Year.

Just a few days before Christmas we decided to wish

'Merry Christmas' in person to our friends in Swinford

instead of sending Christmas cards. We offered some

Brownie cakes to add to the festive spirit and asked

others to join us in making food donations to people in

need. We had a great response and collected two large

boxes full of a variety of items.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank

everybody who gave food as a gift to people in our local

area who are struggling to buy something to eat for their

family.

At the beginning of this month we took the boxes filled

with goodies to the Rugby Food Bank on Railway

Terrace and were greeted by some lovely ladies who

were very appreciative of our boxes. They asked where

it all came from and marked the boxes with 'From

Swinford Village'.

We are sure that your donations will have made a great

difference to some hungry people. Thanks a million!!!!

SWINFORD SKIRTS

Swinford Skirts held their annual planning meeting on

Thursday 10th January. This year’s programme looks

varied and exciting and includes a pamper evening and

meal at M's at Burbage; Dog Racing; a bike ride; long

alley skittles; a Bollywood evening to name just a few.

To get the year started, on Thursday 7th February, we

are going to 'The Jolly Good Pud Co @ Rugby' (check

out their webpage). There will be approximately one

hours demonstration on how to ice your cupcakes

professionally, followed, of course, by the opportunity

to create your own. We shall be departing Swinford at

7.30pm. Numbers need to be confirmed in advance so

that sufficient cupcakes are available. Please let me

know asap on 07765 148335 if you wish to join us.

On Friday 14th June are going to the Cheltenham food

and drink festival for the day. If you would like to join

us on our 20 seater coach please contact Helen on 07926

LENT COURSE IN WALTON

Walton Baptist Chapel will again host this year’s 5-week York course for Lent entitled “Glimpses of God: Hope

for Today’s World”. This ecumenical discussion course will be led jointly by leaders from the Baptist Chapel and

members of the Avon Swift Clergy team. Sessions are as follows:

12th February – The God who hears our cry

26th February – The Shepherd who guides and guards his people

5th March – The Son who is the Way, Truth and Life

12th March – The God who shares our pain

19th March – The God who calms our fears

Each session begins with coffee at 10am and will end at 11am. Each topic is introduced on CD by Dr David Hope

(former Archbishop of York) and other leading Christian thinkers, and then there is time for general discussion.

WEDNESDAY CLUB

All members agreed they had enjoyed their Christmas

and New Year break and were looking forward to 2013.

We hope soon to have the opportunity to sell some of

the craft items made on behalf of All Saints Church

Swinford.

The Wednesday Club is, or should be, affiliated to All

Saints Church, Swinford even though we have no

representative among our membership. Apparently this

is soon to be addressed and we look forward to

welcoming a new member, or perhaps someone to take

over the running of the Club.

Eileen Cottrell had a very special birthday and she

kindly invited us all to afternoon tea on Saturday 19th

January to celebrate with her. What a lovely start to the

New Year.

We all have renewed enthusiasm and we seem to be

ahead of a trend as crafts and handmade items are

currently very much sought after. Perhaps all this

austerity has made people reassess our throw away

society.

New members are always welcome so do join us on

Wednesday from 9.30am until 11.30am in the small

meeting room of the Village Hall.

A RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNER REPLIES

An article appeared in the December 2012 issue with

regards to dog mess in Fir Tree Lane Swinford and how

an irate resident was getting more annoyed with lazy

dog owners who refuse to pick up their dog mess.

I reply as a responsible dog owner who is just as

annoyed with these people. Frequently while dog

walking I also come across piles of mess that has not

been cleared up. Especially on the Green where events

take place throughout the year and young children play.

There is even a bin there, yet these people appear to be

oblivious to this fact. I have not long had a dog and am

very conscious of the fact that dog mess is an unpleasant

sight. A pack of 300 nappy sacks from Tesco costs as

little as 36p. Small price to pay be a conscientious dog

owner, don't you think?

NEWS FROM SWINFORD SCHOOL

Everyone returned to school rested and raring to go after

the Christmas break and although this is a short term,

we still have a lot going on.

The whole school enjoyed a 'Medieval Music Day'

when they had the opportunity to play a wide range of

medieval musical instruments and learn the history

behind them.

Other activities this term include a pottery workshop,

sports club, football, cheerleading, basketball, cooking

and singing.

Some of our children will represent the school in the

South Leicestershire Schools Cross Country Races and

all of the children will take part in our own annual cross

country afternoon, come rain or shine!

We would also like to share with you the excellent

results the school achieved in last year's Standard

Attainment Tests (SATs). All of our children achieved

level 4+ in reading, numeracy and science, placing us

5th out of 259 Leicestershire schools. Further

information is available via the Department for

Education website.

As ever, if you have pre-school children and would like

to come and visit us, we would love to meet you and

show you our school. Please call to make an

appointment.

TODDLER PRE-SCHOOL GROUP IN SOUTH KILWORTH

Ma-Mites is a group for toddlers and pre-schoolers

which has been running for several years in South

Kilworth. In recent years a lot of our local children have

started school, so we're now extending our boundaries,

and hoping to get new people from other villages to

come along.

We meet at South Kilworth Village Hall on Leys

Crescent LE17 6DS, on the FIRST Tuesday of the

month, from 10-11.30am (excluding April due to a clash

with school Easter holiday).

We have a large hall, and an outdoor decking area for

warm days, with a lot of different toys for indoor and

February 2013

outdoor play. There is the provision of tea/coffee/

biscuits for adults, and a rare opportunity to talk to

grown-ups!

This year we have been lucky enough to secure the

involvement of Boogie Bods for our March, May, June

and July sessions. Boogie Bods offer Music and

Movement for young children, with plenty of singing

and dancing around, in a fun and low-key way. On those

days Ma-Mites will open at 10am as usual, and Boogie

Bods will start at 11am till 11.45am.

The cost of each session is £2 per child.

We would love to see some new people so do come

along.
