Dear Friends,When we pray, ‘God of the universe’, just how aware are we of what we are saying? How each of us view God is very personal; for some God, particularly in the form of Jesus, is a very close friend, whilst others relate more to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and for others the Father is there for comfort and guidance. However, the might, majesty and power of God can be difficult to relate to a single member of the Trinity and yet involves great awe and worship.
I make these comments in the aftermath of the recent developments and revelations from astronomy. Ultima Thule, the planetoid in the Kuiper Belt, was investigated recently by the New Horizons team at NASA and revealed more of how our own small bit of the cosmos came into being. The fact that we are able to take pictures at such a distance from Earth (8 minutes for sunlight to reach us, 6 hours for sunlight to reach Ultima Thule) is incredible.
I feel as Christians we need to get everything into perspective and be ever ready to extend our understanding of God. We should never be scared to ask questions and we should be ever prepared to stand in awe of the Almighty God who is really beyond our comprehension.

St Swithins held its annual ‘Carol Service with a Difference’, which was led by the Minstrels of The Forest, who again delighted the packed church with carols and medieval songs and tales focusing on the shepherds and kings with an excellent portrayal of King Herod.
Many thanks to Lou and Colin Shepherd for their hospitality at the Manor House with mulled wine and mince pies that followed the service.
The Minstrels of the Forest will be returning with a new production on Friday 20th December 2019.

A Plea from your Church Warden St Giles has been at the heart of the community of Goodrich for over 700 years, providing support to countless generations.I hope that St Giles can continue as a vibrant church and focal point for this community for centuries to come, but unfortunately, this is not assured. Contrary to popular belief we do not receive any funding from central government or from the diocesan or national church resources. No, all the money we need to keep our beautiful, but very expensive, church going has to be raised within the parish. It is no secret that church attendance has fallen over recent decades, and with it, inevitably, our revenues have too - we really need your help.
I know that many of you reading this will not share my Christian beliefs, but nevertheless greatly value the practical and symbolic services the Church provides; marking the passing of the year through Christmas, Easter and

VILLAGE HALL EVENTS Flicks in the Sticks February sees us showing A Star is Born 12A. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper star in this emotive film about a musician who helps a singer find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral. Thursday 28th February at 7.30 pm. Entrance £5. We now have a licence to sell alcohol so the film can be enjoyed with a glass of wine or a cup of tea.

An appeal for free-standing shelving for the ground floor of the bell tower. Dimensions 4' x 6' would be ideal. This will allow some of the clutter to be tidied up. Needs to be free-standing because plasterwork is too flaky for it to be screwed against the wall.Afternoon Club Our first talk of 2019 will be by an advisor from NatWest Bank, who will give us tips on security and avoiding financial scams. February Community Cafe Join us for our annual Hearty Tea in aid of the British Heart Foundation at the Village Hall on Saturday 16th February starting at 2.30pm. As you’d expect there will be a great selection of cake to enjoy with a cuppa, whilst you catch up with friends after the festive season. There is no fixed charge; all we ask for is a donation to our charity: the purchase, perhaps, of a few raffle tickets with all proceeds going to BHF.
RABI Soup Kitchen Update A huge thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed a selection of homemade soups and bacon rolls. Our apologies
to anyone who was disappointed, as we sold out by 1.45pm and had to finish early, but we will do it all again later in the year. We are delighted to report we raised £400 on the day which means the community funded 4 double hampers and 2 single hampers which were delivered to members of the farming community by RABI in the run up to Christmas. So, a huge thank you once again.
Concert update Many of you enjoyed a wonderful evening of Christmas music with the Athene choir. After expenses Llangrove’s share of the proceeds went to the Rainbows and Brownie packs, the Scout Troop, and Village Singers all of whom draw their members from the surrounding area.
Friday 8th February (7 for 7.30pm) is the date for our next musical evening, in aid of St Michael’s Hospice, and will once again be at St Deinst Church, Llangarron and will feature Jemima Phillips, Harpist (former harpist to HRH Prince of Wales). Thank you The pupils of Llangrove CE Academy would like to thank everyone for making use of their pupil post service at Christmas. It took them over three days to deliver all the post and thanks to the generosity of the village they raised about £100.
Church house-keeping Each year we begin with a blank page of two-week slots for cleaning and putting flowers in church. If you have an hour or so to spare over the coming months to either clean or put flowers in for a fortnight, we’d love to hear
from you. Alternatively, a spring clean is planned before Easter, so if you’d like to join a small team giving the church its infrequent deep clean, partake in coffee and cake please let Bobby or Jenny know so we can let you have the date.
Whilst the churchyard is beautifully maintained by our volunteers we wonder if there is a small band of gentlemen who would be willing to meet up for a few hours to help re stand a few gravestones, which are leaning somewhat. Coffee Mornings are back Yes, we’re back so please join us on Wednesday 13th at 10.30am at the Village Hall for a coffee and a chance
to catch up with friends after our festive break. As always, monies raised from the Bring and Buy stall and raffle go towards the upkeep and running of the church.

St Matthew’s Church gets National Lottery Permission to Start work
Good news, St. Matthew’s Church has had a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £105,000 for repairs & re-ordering confirmed. We’re delighted that we have received this wonderful support which has been made possible by National Lottery players.
In February 2017 St. Matthew’s Church, a Grade ll Listed church, was put on the Historic England’s ‘At Risk’ Register because its

external stonework was in such poor condition that vital structural repairs were needed.
Essential repairs to the church will protect it for future generations as a focus for worship and an important historic place of interest for the local community and visitors to the area. When finished the church will be a lively focal point and social centre for the parish of Marstow. We plan to host events, both social and educational, offer the space for meetings and take the opportunity to display local historical and environmental information.
The Delivery phase of the repairs and nave re-ordering will take approximately seven months and is scheduled to start on February 25th, 2019. This is a big project so there will be deliveries of stone and materials to the churchyard and the church building will be surrounded by scaffolding. We have been assured by our architect and builder that all precautions will be made to ensure that the church and churchyard are safe to use throughout the seven months of the contract and to minimize disruption to our neighbours. Our Architect and builder have a wealth of experience in working with listed places of worship and we have every confidence in their assurances.
IMPORTANT Please note that our church will stay open during the work and welcomes you for our regular Sunday Praise at 9.30 a.m. on the first Sunday every month and Holy Communion at 9.30 a.m. on the third Sunday. We will also be able to accommodate special services,
Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals etc.
We are delighted to be able to confirm, that with the enormous help from the Heritage Lottery Players, we can now look forward with confidence to a repaired and watertight church and a community space for us all to enjoy at this special church.

The prophet Elijah had escaped from his enemies and had taken shelter in a cave in the mountains. As he waited for God to instruct him there was an enormous wind, but God wasn’t in the wind. The wind was followed by a tremendous thunderstorm but God wasn’t in the storm. There next followed fire, but again, God wasn’t in the fire. In the end there was silence, deep, deep silence and then God spoke.

An update on the Poppy Appeal 2018: our Poppy Appeal Organiser has announced that to date the Branch has raised just over £4,665! Thanks again to all who contributed and of course to the Poppy Collectors without whom we would not have achieved such a remarkable sum. (To date the County has raised just over £246,000, the highest in the last five years.)
The annual County Conference was held on Saturday 12th January and we were fortunate to have as the guest speaker the RBL National Vice-Chairman Mrs Una Cleminson who gave an interesting and informative talk on the work undertaken by the RBL throughout the country.
The Branch Welfare Officer is concerned that we may not be aware of potential beneficiaries within our district, or indeed throughout the county. Please be vigilant and if you believe that an ex-serviceman/woman may benefit from some assistance please contact any Branch member or visit the Military Charities Help Desk now situated in Herefordshire Council’s customer service centre in Blueschool House, Blueschool Street, Hereford HR1 2LX. It is open from 10am to 2pm on Thursdays staffed by the RBL and staffed by members of SSAFA on Tuesdays. The RBL runs a ‘Handy Van Service’ dealing with such diverse issues as minor plumbing problems to fixing access rails for anyone with mobility difficulties. We need to know before we can help.

The Bishop of LudlowAs I write this is the opening week of the New Year. I am conscious that by the time this letter gets into print the festivities of Christmas and the New Year will be long passed. However, this season now passed has caused me to reflect on current patterns of life and the place and value of our churches within our communities. Although anecdotal, I have received from a significant number of parishes the news that attendance numbers over the Christmas period were some of the highest in living memory. From an entirely different source recently I read an interesting article that suggested that the number of people who were committed atheists was declining while the number who want to have some form of spiritual faith was increasing. Of course, the latter does not necessarily result in more people engaging in regular Christian worship.What I think it does suggest is that deep human desire for peace, well being and hope remain deeply embedded in our personal and community lives.
That deep desire is, I judge, set in a present context where uncertainty about the future and the instability and fragility of many communities are present realities. Where are we going and how will it all end? These are
questions that if not in the forefront of our conversations are at the back of many people’s minds. It is perhaps not surprising therefore that the message of peace on earth and good will to all people has a powerful resonance. As this year progresses the uncertainly over Brexit will unfold: for good or ill we have yet to see. One of the features of recent news reports that disturbs me greatly is the rise in knife crime. The resorting to this kind of violence by one human being over another I admit to find profoundly shocking.It impacts me as being the complete antithesis of loving one’s neighbour. What is it that enables one human being to so respond to another in an act of violence that treats the sanctity of human life so cheaply?
Understanding ourselves as made in the image of God, seeing in the faces of others the same dignity we so cherish for ourselves, loving our neighbours, offering forgiveness when impacted by hurt are some of the most cherished of Christian values. More importantly, what they are not are simply platitudes. Perhaps more than ever our society needs to lay hold of these once more as medicine for our souls and that of our society. As always it can begin by each one of us doing our part.+Alistair
