At the organization’s 99th annual dinner, Jimmy Haslam, new owner of the Cleveland Browns, will share his story of success in business, in energy and in community investment.

The Canton Regional Chamber’s 99th Annual Dinner will be held on Thursday, Feb. 7, at the Canton Memorial Civic Center, located at 1101 Market Ave. N in downtown Canton.

It is a wonderful time to live in Stark County! And it is with great excitement that I begin this year as your chairman of the board for the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce.

This year, the Chamber is entering into its 99th year. Just as exciting is that we will celebrate 50 years of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Enshrinement Festival successfully representing Stark County nationally. Notwithstanding the Chamber and the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Enshrinement Festival, there are many organizations that

are coming up on significant milestones in our community. These organizations have benefited our community immensely and made us what we are today. We are so fortunate that our local forefathers had the great insight to put in place organizations that are the very foundation of our community, and we are fortunate that great leaders have emerged to continue that work. What this says to me is that in Stark County, we care about each other and the betterment of our community. We have the responsibility to continue their success.

community leaders and government officials. When complete, the plan will address the role of the chamber highlighting our strategic areas of focus as we lay the groundwork for the next 100 years of successful collaboration within the community. We will address mission, branding, succession planning, and financial needs for our future. I am looking forward to working with Denny Saunier, Chamber president and CEO, the board and the staff as we embark on our objectives this year.

Past board chairman Rick Haines challenged us in his message to make a difference as we go forward. I thank him for his inspiration and leadership. We have benefited from Rick’s hard work and I look forward to continuing his success in the coming year.

In late December 2012, Dominion and Caiman Energy II announced a $1.5 billion joint venture to provide midstream services to gas producers in the Utica shale under Ohio and parts of Pennsylvania. Dominion East Ohio’s already substantial network of gathering lines and processing facilities will contribute to this project.

Earlier in 2012, M3 Midstream, Access Midstream (formerly Chesapeake Midstream) and EV Energy Partners announced a $900 million midstream project that will result in processing plants in Columbiana and Harrison counties. The Columbiana County plant, closest to us in Stark County, will be in Kensington. Also last year, MarkWest Energy announced plans to build a $500 million processing plant in Cadiz. Other projects announced in 2012 total at least another $2.9 billion in processing and pipeline facilities.

So, what is midstream? To generalize, midstream is the activity that brings energy products from the wells (upstream), and delivers the products to paying customers (downstream). Considerable processing of the energy products is required along the way.

Here is one way that helps us to think about midstream. We think of a manufacturing company that produces a hard product made of steel or plastics or ceramics for various customers. Unless those customers are right next door to the manufacturer’s assembly line, the manufacturer can’t sell the product until it gets that product into the hands of the customers. Trucks and highways, railroads, ships on rivers and seas, warehouses and distribution facilities become essential. Midstream can be thought of as the transportation and distribution network for the Utica.

The midstream projects involve construction of pipeline, processing facilities to separate the various forms

of gas that come out of the ground, and delivery of those separated products to end users. In the wet gas region of the Utica, the methane that is burned to heat our homes comes out of the ground along with higher value wet gases such as butane, ethane and propane. These gases can be separated from each other by manipulating pressure and temperature. That’s because each of these gases has a specific boiling point — that point which is the borderline between a substance remaining a gas or reverting to a liquid form. When the various gases in the Utica are separated from each other, they become commodities that can be sold to end-users.

The term boiling point is best imagined when we think of heating water on our stove for coffee or tea. When steam comes out of the teakettle, we have reached the boiling point, which is 212 degrees Fahrenheit at sea level. The gases coming out of the ground turn to liquid at quite frigid temperatures, but the process is no different from what we experience — in reverse — on our stove at home.

In 2013, the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce will spend more time studying midstream projects in the Utica and sharing that information with non-energy members who need to know about this important phase of Utica development. The Utica shale exploration will accelerate rapidly when various investors complete their midstream projects. It will mean more product from the ground can actually be sold.

Whitney J. Prather has joined the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce as the events and marketing manager in the marketing and events department.

In her new role, she manages more than 30 business and networking events for the Chamber, including this month’s 99th Annual Dinner. In addition, she manages the social media marketing and membership communications for the Chamber, along with other special projects.

“Whitney has already become known among our members and our staff for her energetic and optimistic demeanor. She is highly creative and thinks strategically about our programs and projects. We couldn’t have asked for a more dynamic addition to our team,” said Jessica Bennett, director of marketing and events.

Whitney comes to the Chamber from Massillon Parks & Recreation, where she was the marketing & special event supervisor. Her duties included coordinating and implementing community events and marketing initiatives for the Massillon Recreation Center and 35 parks and open spaces.

“I’m extremely fortunate to work in a field where I can express my creativity and build relationships with others. And, to top it off, I’ve found a wonderful home with the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce. I’m working with the best in the industry and I’m thrilled to be a part of the team,” says Whitney.

Prather obtained her bachelor’s in communications with an emphasis in public relations from Malone University. Born and raised in Canton, she lives in Stark County with her husband of seven years. Whitney is passionate about the Stark County community and is a member of Faith Family Church.

The 50th anniversary of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the annual Enshrinement Festival will be celebrated in 2013, and the first event kicking off the festivities is the annual Queen Pageant on Thursday, May 9.

Applications and tickets will be available beginning Monday, Feb. 11, on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, located at 222 Market Ave. N. in downtown Canton.

The deadline to submit the application and $70 fee is Monday, Mar. 11, by 5 p.m. Candidates cannot be younger than a high school senior and 18 years old by May 1 or more than 23 years of age before Sept. 1. Candidates must reside and, if employed, work within a 30-mile radius of Stark County.

While not mandatory, all potential candidates are invited and encouraged to attend the fourth annual “Screen the Queen Pageant” session, which will take place Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce from 9 to 11 a.m. This session will help young ladies decide if they would like to enter the pageant, and to give them a better idea of what to expect if they do. Participants will have the opportunity to review the 2012 Queen Pageant DVD, learn about the judging experience from past years’ judges, hear from a past queen who will share her memories, and ask questions about the process. This informative, informal session is FREE, but reservations must be made in advance by contacting Kathy Lindenberger at (330) 458-2056 or [email protected].

The Queen Pageant on Thursday, May 9, will begin at 7 p.m. at The Canton Palace Theatre. All seats are reserved at $20 each, and tickets can be purchased at the Canton Regional Chamber, Canton AAA and Massillon AAA.

At the conclusion of the pageant, a Queen and court members will have been selected on the basis of personality, poise, beauty, communication skills, academic achievement and service to community. The number of court members selected will coincide with the number of members of the 2013 Class of Enshrinees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Queen and her court will serve as role models and goodwill ambassadors throughout the community, and one of their most memorable experiences will be their ride on a float in the Enshrinement Festival Grand Parade.

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL FACTS:In 2013, the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Enshrinement Festival will mark the 50th anniversary of honoring the legends of professional football, which includes conducting a world-renowned festival celebrating the annual enshrinement of football players, coaches and contributors into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The collaborative efforts of this leadership team, combined with the professional staffs at the Canton Regional Chamber and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and

the dedicated team of more than 4,200 volunteers, will ensure the success of 19 diverse events from July 19 through Aug. 6, 2013. The Enshrinement Festival activities, attended by nearly 700,000 people, are expected to produce an economic impact of over $32 million for the Canton/Stark County area and $56 million for the State of Ohio. In addition, millions will experience aspects of the Enshrinement Festival as events are televised and covered by other media. The central focus and highlight of this year’s Enshrinement Festival will be the Aug. 3 Enshrinement Ceremony for the Class of 2013 Enshrinees, who will be announced on Feb. 2. Leadership Stark County 27th Signature Program - Apply Now to the Signature Program!Applications are now available at LeadershipStarkCounty.org for the 10-month Signature Program. The Signature Program is an in-depth examination of Stark County’s assets and challenges, along with an introduction to effecting community change.

The Signature Program is ideal for business and community leaders. Each year, selected participants enhance their leadership skills and gain an understanding of local issues, assets and resources.

The leadership experience begins with an intense, two-day Opening Retreat in September that will provide participants with an in-depth personal leadership assessment and dynamic workshops. From there, they’ll meet once per month to expand their capacity for leadership and service in our community.

The Signature experience includes:

• Exploring the cultural, economic, and historic features of Stark County on a wide-ranging bus tour.

• Delving into economic development with on-site tours and small-group interaction with area CEOs.

• Taking a jail tour, meeting with local judges and investigating the justice system on a cruiser ride with sheriff’s deputies and police.

• Examining social and economic issues through panel discussions with political and civic leaders.

• Role-playing within a poverty simulation and visiting non-profits to understand their unique concerns.

Applications are due by Apr. 26. Signature Program tuition is $2,500, and tuition assistance is available for applicants from non-profit or government organizations. Selection is competitive and based on the written application, group interview, and Leadership Stark County’s goal to create a class that is representative of the professional, cultural, racial, economic, geographic and ethnic diversity of the community.

Employers: Just say YES to the Drug Free Safety Program | February Safety Council Luncheon

The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation Drug-Free Safety Program (DFSP) offers a premium discount to eligible employers for implementing a loss-prevention strategy addressing workplace use and misuse of alcohol and other drugs, especially illegal drugs.

The Ohio BWC designed the DFSP to help employers more effectively prevent on-the-job injuries and illness by integrating drug-free efforts into their overall workplace safety program. The DFSP can help employers achieve both long-range safety and cost-saving benefits.

At the Stark County Safety Council Luncheon on Thursday, Feb. 14, a local panel of experts will discuss the benefits of the Drug-Free Safety Program and answer attendee questions.

About the Panelists:Gust Callas currently serves as coordinator for the Labor and Employment Practice Area of the firm. He is also a member of the Firm’s Litigation and Workers’ Compensation Service Groups. He has extensive experience in litigation and particular specialty in the defense and counseling of clients in employment-related matters. Callas received both his law degree and undergraduate degree in accounting with the highest honors from the University of Akron. He is recognized by his peers as one of the preeminent lawyers in his field, having received an AV Preeminent® Peer Review Rating from Martindale-Hubbell*, and has been recognized as an Ohio Super Lawyer from 2004 to 2013.

Dr. Hensley is the medical director of Mercy Medical Center’s occupational medicine program, Work Health and Safety Services. Serving in the position for over 17 years, Dr. Hensley has partnered with over 1,600 companies in the Stark County and surrounding areas. He is a certified medical review officer for companies throughout the United States. Work Health and Safety Services provides programs from health and wellness to work related injuries and drug screening services. He received his medical degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, internal medicine training at Akron General Medical Center and his

occupational medicine training at the University of Cincinnati.

Jodi Sabatino has been with the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation since 1991, working in various roles prior to becoming employer services specialist. She works directly with employers, assisting them in understanding ratemaking and implementing various claims and risk management strategies and BWC programs. Sabatino attended Kent State University and is currently working to complete her ARM certification.

Why are you interested Stark County’s Young Professionals initiative? I became involved in ystark! not long after I started working at Aultman. It was something my leadership team encouraged, and Aultman is a very big supporter of ystark!. It was obvious to me early on that an organization comprised of young leaders who want our community to grow was a very good thing. Since then, my interest and involvement has grown year by year. I’ve been on the executive committee now for three years—and I’m now serving as the chairman for 2013.

What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.? ystark! is a force and keeps gaining steam in Stark County. Each month has a meet-up for networking and socializing, and it gives local restaurants, bars and other venues the opportunity to appeal to our population. In addition, ystark! provides service programs, professional development, recognition and recreational activities. Through all of these programs, ystark! truly works to fulfill the mission of attracting, retaining and engaging YPs. It’s exciting to see that in Stark County.

Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked? I was born and raised in Canton and am thankful every day for that. I had the privilege to go to Xavier University for my undergraduate business degree, so I lived in Cincinnati for four years. After graduation, I was lucky to return to Canton and work in Aultman’s human resources department.

Why have you chosen to live in Stark County? I think this is a common answer, but nonetheless a powerful one: my family is here. My parents gave us an appreciation for Canton and all of a Northeast Ohio at an early age, and my goal is to see this area thrive. So many famous athletes, innovators and leaders have come from Ohio, and there’s no reason why this shouldn’t be a desirable place to live.

What type of dwelling do you live in? What do you think of the housing choices for YPs in the area? I recently got married, so my wife Angela and I have an apartment in the Akron area right now. She works in Cleveland, so we split the difference for the time being. The cost of living in Northeast Ohio and in Stark County specifically couldn’t be much better. There are many nice suburban areas to live and raise a family around Canton. It would be even better if there were more living opportunities in the downtown area for young people.

What do you like MOST about Canton/Stark County? Local leaders and the business community are supportive of one another, so there is a strong sense of collaboration. From a geographic standpoint, Canton is a quick drive to bigger cities like Cleveland and Columbus. Lastly, there are huge opportunities on the horizon when it comes to the oil and gas industry. I hope that we can take full advantage of the natural resource we are sitting on.

What do you like LEAST about Canton/Stark County? I don’t like having to defend my region and my city to other people. There is a negative perception from many people that this area has very little to offer–even from people who live here. Increased business and commerce is the key to growing this area and breaking that stigma. Good jobs will attract and retain more professionals and future leaders.

What are the opportunities for YPs when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? There are world-renowned companies in this area. Also, between our great colleges, universities and small businesses, there are plenty of professional opportunities. ystark! is a great avenue to network and learn more about what’s here. When it comes to leadership and community

involvement, there are so many non-profit and community boards to participate on. ystark! is a great first step – I have grown as a person and as a professional from my ystark! leadership experience. It’s a good transition into additional community involvement.

What’s missing that would attract more YPs? It starts with career and professional opportunities. The more good jobs available, the more attractive an area becomes. Also, the nightlife is improving, but there is still a lot of opportunity there. A section or an area downtown could be developed as the place to go for YPs and for local college students–that would be fantastic.

What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun? I’m involved in multiple recreational and sports leagues in the area during the week. And on weekends, there are so many good/ethnic restaurants. I’ve introduced my wife to many of Canton’s dining establishments. She tries to act as if she is from here now.

What would you change if you could? I want to change the perception. And with ystark!, I am confident we are making progress in doing that. With the oil and gas industry in particular, I think this community could transform for the better.

Could you see yourself spending your lifetime here? Yes, absolutely I could. This is a special place, and my goal is to keep as many people as possible in this area. I appreciate the opportunities Canton and this area has afforded me, and I want others to experience that.

What would cause you to want to leave Canton? What other cities in the United States would be appealing to you as a home base? Why? I could never move far from Canton – I am a Northeast Ohioan and this is where family is. I want to walk the talk that I am constantly preaching. The only thing that could cause me to leave would be if our business community and opportunities regressed. This entire region appeals to us, so Akron and Cleveland would be about as far as we would ever go. It’s all home to us.

Participants will have the opportunity to review the 2012 Queen Pageant DVD, learn about the judging experience from past years’ judges, hear from a past queen who will share her memories, and ask questions about the process.
