February is the month to celebrate LOVE! Thus, we asked our staff and children to share some of the things they love about Coyote Hill. We hope you’ll enjoy the varied answers as much as we enjoy being a part of The Hill.
We all get to be one big family! -- girl, age 7
I love being able to travel and learn life skills. --boy, age 17
I love sharing the gospel with the children, hearing about their salvations & witnessing their baptisms. There have been many lately! I love those tender-hearted moments when a child has a break through, being honest with their feelings and seeing a change for the better. I love crazy family dinners full of laughter! There are so many things I love about Coyote Hill, you don’t have time to read them all.
--Merri Heberlein, Relief Home Parent
I love popsicles from Kim, swinging with the kids, getting one of a kind artwork from a child and pulling pranks on Bill! --Kari “Kid-at-Heart” Salmon, Development Director
I love how much I’m loved & cared for, and that my Home Parents introduced me to a loving Jesus. --girl, age 12
I love warm sunny days when the kids are out of school and everywhere I turn, there are children and youth enjoying A Safe Place to Be a Child. They are playing ball, or working with Lance on the property, or riding horses with Allison at the arena. They’re fishing at the lake with Home Parents, playing on the beach and swimming, throwing a frisbee in the yard, riding bikes up and down the lane, taking nature hikes in the woods, playing fetch with the dogs. I especially like it when they stop in the office just to say hello to everyone.
--Larry McDaniel, Executive Director
If you haven’t “liked” us on Facebook yet, you better hurry. We’re about to launch our March Madness, Awesomest Toy EVER bracket! You nominate the toys, we’ll create the bracket, and then you vote each week. By the end of March, we’ll be able to declare which toy is the most awesome of all time. Will it be a ball? A stick (turned light saber, fishing pole or baton?) Legos, perhaps? It’s entirely up to you.Be watching our Facebook page towards the end of February to begin making your nominations.

Our Equine Program and Barn Manager, Allison Mather, has begun working on a plan to turn a bunch of City Slickers into Coyote Hill Cowboys this year. It’s a five step reward process for the children in our Equine Program.
“As of now, we have a bunch of City Slickers running around,” states Allison. “But beginning in February, we’re going to change all of that.”
The City Slicker level is where each child begins, learning simple tasks like where the first aid kit is located and what are the parts of a horse. As they successfully master new skills, they progress through our next four levels - Buckaroo, Wrangler, Trail Blazer, and finally, the expert Coyote Hill Cowboy level. Once a child reaches that level, they will be able to do such things as deworm a horse, assist the farrier, work a horse in the round pen, etc.
It is a very long list of tasks and skills that we’ll be expecting them to work through. However, it’s all geared towards our overall purpose with the Equine Program: building renewed self-esteem, character and confidence in our children.
