Following upon the four teachings from the law presented last Sunday, the master teacher presents two more this Sunday. The first, the legal rule about revenge rooted in Exodus 21:22-25, Leviticus 24:20, and Deuteronomy 19:21, Jesus completes by emphasizing kindness and compassion, true holiness in light of today’s First Reading. Written in the singular (not two eyes and multiple teeth), this law war originally intended to curtail the extent of revenge by an evil person. However, at the time of Jesus, many already regarded this teaching as too severe. Yet Jesus’ new teaching could have been similarly interpreted as too severe, erring on the side of pure charity, and thus disconnected entirely from the law of revenge. The source of the second teaching Jesus addresses is Leviticus 19:18. Why the evangelist Matthew and Jesus leave out “as yourself” and expands the verse to include “hate your enemy” is uncertain. Growing tensions between Jewish leadership and Gentiles at the time Matthew was writing could be the reason. After the quotation, Jesus explains the morality his disciples are to live. Love extends beyond neighbors who think and act similarly, to those who disagree and dislike you, and even desire to do you harm.

The call of the Lord’s disciples to be “perfect” or blameless, which serves as both the summary and climax of the last two Sunday’s passages, is the call to be holy, imitating God’s holiness fulfilled in Jesus. “Perfect” in this context is unrelated to the contemporary human need to strive for perfection. Inherent in this word, which occurs in the Lucan parallel to this passage (6:36) and again in Matthew 19:21, is the notion of the divine mercy that disciples are to extend to others who journey on the path to holiness, but occasionally falter.

MARC
