Did you ever wonder what happens here at St. Ann’s between Sundays during the week? Are you feeling called to help others? Do you have a little time, or a lot, to help meet the many needs within our parish? Community Sunday is a perfect opportunity to find out more about all of St. Ann’s many activities and ministries. Plan to come and meet fellow parishioners who volunteer in various ministries. Chat with them to understand what they do. You might discover you have time or talent to share with our parish community. There are many ways to volunteer – you can offer an hour, a day; you can serve from home, at the Church, or in the community. Volunteering not only serves our community but is a wonderful way to deepen your faith and connect with great people. We are sure to have a group that fits your interests, schedule, and circumstances. We will also have Sunday coffee and donuts. All taking place in the Parish Hall after the Saturday Vigil Mass and each morning Mass and after the 1:30 Spanish Mass. Please mark your calendars and plan on coming! Full-time Director of Religious Education Needed Saint Ann Church (Arlington)

A small parish with a desire to grow both spiritually and in size, Saint Ann Roman Catholic Church in Arlington, Virginia, seeks missionary dynamism in a salaried, full-time Director of Religious Education. This person will oversee a parish catechetical program that includes, but is not limited to, a religious education program for preschool through 12th grade. A Masters degree in Theology/Religious Education or a related field, or a certificate in ministry or theology from a Catholic college or university, is strongly preferred. The cultivation of a strong interior life, anchored in Christ, is essential. Send cover letter and resume by February 28, 2014 to Father Mel O. Portula, CICM at [email protected]. No telephone calls please.

TAKE COMMUNION TO HOSPITAL PATIENTS - TRAINING SESSION Feb 27, 4:45 pm (Thursday) Over 20 St. Ann parishioners are taking communion to Catholics in the Virginia Hospital Center, once a week or every other week. The Hospital's “Volunteer Training” session of about an hour is on February 27 in the Hospital Auditorium. You will visit with a current Hospital Minister to make sure this is the ministry for you, but this training only takes place three times a year. We are organized into small teams for each day of the week. After training, you visit patients in one area of the Hospital on a particular day. Call Mary Green 703-850-0971 [email protected] or 703-534-2166, home. Bagged Meals for the Homeless: St. Ann will be preparing bagged meals for the homeless at 4:45 p.m. in the Parish Hall on Tuesday, February 18th, 2014. Come and be part of one of the wonderful things St. Ann Parish does to help others in our community. ST. ANN’S CREDIT UNION: Annual Meeting: The 65th annual meeting for the membership of St. Ann’s Arlington Federal Credit Union will be held February 23, 2014 in the lower level of the church, Room 105, at 1:00 PM. 4th Quarter Dividend: The Credit Union paid a 4th Quarter dividend of .6% . Annual member statements were mailed the week of January 12th. If you do not receive a statement stop by the Credit Union or contact Mary Green at 703-528-3434 or [email protected]. Loans Available: If you are looking for an auto or home equity loan, check with the Credit Union to learn about our competitive interest rates. We also make personal unsecured loans of up to $5,000 (and in some cases $10,000), which are a great alternative to much higher interest rate credit card debt and can even be used to consolidate existing debt. Please contact Mary Green at 703-528-3434 to discuss how a Credit Union loan might meet your needs. Extended Sunday Hours: The Credit Union will remain open until 2:45 on the second Sunday of each month to better meet the needs of our entire parish community. Thank you so volunteers from St. Ann's for the Oral Rehydration Project. I hope everyone felt it was worthwhile! We very much appreciated the help and good humor of the volunteers! Over 30,000 packets of the oral rehydration salts were prepared at this project--that is 7,000 more than we got done last year--and it was because of the efforts of all of those great volunteers.

Volunteer Opportunities at St. Ann: Attention all handymen and women! With the St. Ann loan being paid off, we now can turn our attention to other projects that will enhance the beauty, functionality and efficiency of our parish facilities. We are looking for volunteers that can assist in managing various projects, and volunteers that would like to get their hands dirty and be active in the various renovation and capitalization projects. If this ministry sounds appealing, please send Nick Babiak an email at [email protected]. In addition, if you see something in the parish that is in need of repair, upgrading or facility suggestions please send Nick an email. Convent Rehabilitation: A group is being formed to study potential rehabilitation of the St Ann Convent building. After years of sitting vacant, some major renovations are anticipated in order to bring the building up to current codes. We are seeking Architects, Engineers, Commercial Real Estate professionals or Contractors that may be able to provide valuable insight on this project. If you are interested, please contact Dominic Machion at [email protected] or 703-521-1538. Thank you. Car Raffle Help Needed! Once again St. Ann Parish will be participating in the All Saints multi-parish car raffle. Prizes include 5 cars and 20 cash awards. A committee is forming to run the car raffle at St. Ann during February-April. Most importantly, we need assistance with the accounting part of the ticket sales. Help is also needed to send out the raffle ticket mailing and to sell tickets on Sundays during Masses. If you can help in any way, please contact Denise Brown at 703-243-3772 or [email protected]. Thanks!

FROM THE FINANCE COUNCIL: After our Annual Stewardship Report for the 2012-2013 fiscal year was sent to all parishioners last fall, a few parishioners had questions about the parish support for the school. The actual amount for 2012-13 was $304,000 while the budgeted amount for 2013-14 was $208,000, and they expressed concern that the parish was reducing its support for the school. The reality is quite the opposite. As background, the parish “contribution for Catholic education” has been set at $223,572 annually since 1986. Over the years our parish has contributed over $6 million for Catholic education in our school. For any year in which school tuitions, fundraising efforts and other income do not cover the total school expenses, the parish contribution for Catholic education increases. In the 2010-11 and 2012-13 fiscal years, even with tuition increases, the parish contribution exceeded $300,000(An enrollment decline/increase of less than 10 pupils can shift the financials by tens of thousands of dollars). There has been a significant increase in tuition for St Ann Catholic School in recent years. For this school year, families in the parish are paying $6,030 for one child; $10,460 for two; and $14,375 for three children. There is diocesan financial aid available to reduce this somewhat. For this fiscal year (2013-14), due to increased enrollment with incremental tuition increases, the school revenues are forecasted to exceed expenses such that the budget for the parish “contribution to Catholic education” could be reduced to $208,000. Should there still be a favorable difference between the budgeted amount and the normal contribution($223,572) on June 30,2014, it could be placed in a reserve account for future years. We are concerned that the financial pressures on our parish families with children may cause them to not choose Catholic education, since public education is available and it is paid for by the taxes of all Arlington residents. The Finance Council is considering additional longer term financing methods to recommend to Fr. Mel so that our parish continues to provide outstanding Catholic Education at a reasonable cost, as it has for the last 60 years. St Ann School certainly is the little school with big results, which includes national recognition as a “Blue Ribbon School of Excellence! We encourage parishioners to continue to be generous in your contributions, as this very much includes our investment in Catholic education. As we approach this effort, we welcome suggestions from all parishioners, either by mail to the parish office or by email to Fr. Mel ([email protected]) using “Contribution to Catholic Education” in the subject line.
