Since its 2012 facialprocedure, the Tiguan now appears even more like its larger Touareg sibling. Its horizontal grille splitsbi-xenon (high and lowbeam) headlights andU-shaped LED (light emitting diode) ontop-end models, while the rear taillights received some more subtle tweaks. Physically, the Tiguan (the splicing of the words tiger and iguana) competes in the same class as the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Ford Escape and KiaSportage, to name just a few. Equally sharp looking is the interior that carries over for 2013 with the high-end-style dash, cleanly tailored seats and premium carpeting. Rear passengerswill appreciate the six inches of fore/aft travel as well as the reclining 60/40 split seat back. For more cargo space, the rear seat back, as well as the front passenger bucket, can fold flat. The space is made even more generous due to the extra-low load floor. Tiguanis powered by a 200-horse 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder connected to a six-speed manual transmission oroptional six-speed automatic. Tiguanruns the spectrum with three trimruns the spectrum with three trim

Thetop-end Highline wants for nothing and comes with leather seats, climate control, 18-inch wheels and a lot morefor your on the road price of $40,000.for your on-the-road-price of $40,000.

The Touareg (pronounced“Twah-regg”) resides inthat rarified strata occu-pied by the Buick Enclave,Acura MDX and other pre-mium tall wagons. It sharesplenty with the pricier (and related) Porsche Cayenne, including thecarryover 280-horsepower 3.6-litre V6.The optional 3.0-litre turbo-diesel now spools out 240 horsepower (previously225). In case you’re wondering, VW willnot bring the hybrid model (available in the United States) to Canada. Bothpowerplants provide the Touareg with a 3,500-kilogram towing capacity. An six-speed automatic transmission is used to direct engine torque to all four wheels. The turbo-diesel is good for 11.2 l/100 km in the city and 6.8 on the highway, compared with 12.3/8.8 for the base 3.6.At this point your assumption that theTouareg is not a jacked-up car wearing oversized tires is correct as it has been specifically designed for off-road dutyand is classified as a light truck. The per-manent four-wheel-drive system works topull you out of rough situations by send-ing power equally to the front and rearwheels. Torque can also be redirectedif wheel slip is detected. The Touareg if wheel slip is detected. The Touareg
is a relative deal since it costs consider-ably less (about $6,000, actually) than the Porsche Cayenne, yet comes with many standard features of the air/power/tilt/cruise variety as well as a power sunroof, power liftgate, heated front seats, elec-tronic parking assistance to fit into tight spots and rain sensing wipers.spots and rain-sensing wipers.

Volkswagen gets the creditfor creating the first modern-day hatchback in the mid-’70s,followed by the hot hatch variant a few years later.Whether it has been called theGolf or the Rabbit, as it has on a couple of occasions, VW has developed a fan base that has remained loyal to German and not Asia-based products. For 2013, Volkswagen is simply leaving the Golf and its offshoots as they arepending a new 2014 model. The regular Golf remains available in two- and four-door hatchback and four-door wagonvariants with a base 170-horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine. There’s also a 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-diesel that’s quite torquey and good for 4.6l/100 km on the highway and 6.7 in thecity, which is about 35 per cent betterthan the base 2.5. As before, the sporty GTI is available in two- and four-door models and comes with a carryover200-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre gasoline four-cylinder. Both two- and four-door models come with powerwindows, power locks, air conditioning, cruise control, power heated outside mirrors and an eight-speaker audiopackage. Volkswagen seems to bepackage. Following a one-year absence, the new (not “New”) Beetle returned for the 2012 model year with crisper styling, a roomier and up-to-date interior and more power. The Beetleis wider and longer than the old New Beetle, which means moreinterior room for all. The contemporary cabin features easy-to-read dials and massive air vents that flank a carbon-fibre-look dashboard. On up-level modelsa trio of gauges (oil temp, turbo boost pressure and clock/stopwatch) seeminspired by the Porsche 911 cockpit. Basemodels arrive with a 170-horsepower2.5-litre five-cylinder. Added for 2013 is a 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-diesel(TDI). The TDI offers a very real alterna-tive to most gas-electric hybrids when overall fuel economy and initial pur-chase cost are factored in. The top-rung and most performance-focused Beetlegets it done with a 200-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. It’s alsothe only model to include a standardrear spoiler. Entry-level Beetles show-case power-operated accessories plus airconditioning, cloth-covered seats andan eight-speaker stereo. Opting for theautomatic transmission adds leather-ette upholstery, heated front seats andette upholstery, heated front seats and

The next-generation Ford’sFusion represents a merging of high-fashion style with game-altering fuel economy, with significant technologi-cal treats coming along for the ride. The sedan’s primaryeye-catcher is the dramatic roofline, suggesting kinship with the Audi A7, Volkswagen CC and CLS-class Mercedes-Benz. Another design highlight is theopen-mouth grille that greatly differs from the previous triple-bar fixture. TheFusion’s fashion statement extends tothe cabin, with its fancier trim, comfierseats and a freshly pressed control panel.
The distance between the front and rear wheels increases by five inches and the width and height by about an inch.Trunk room is the only reduction spot(likely due to a shorter deck), but onlyby about six per cent. The Fusion joinsthe Hyundai Sonata and 2013 Chevrolet Malibu in abandoning a V6 option, buteventually there will be no fewer thanfive distinctive engine picks, including two Prius-like gasoline-electric hybridsystems. It all begins with a 170-horse-power 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine,while1.6- and 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost engines, worth 179cylinder “EcoBoost” engines, worth 179

Ford’s latest Escape repre-sents a clean-sheet design-and-content approach to satisfy the needs of buy-ers. The sleeker look isradically different from theoutgoing version’s boxi-ness, however its slightly larger dimen-sions have resulted in greater rear-seatroom plus slightly more passenger and cargo volume with the rear seat in place or folded flat. The interior is inviting, with an attractively segmented gauge/control panel with asymmetric air vents. The floor shifter’s position at the base of the dashboard partially blocks theheating/ventilation controls, but makes the area designated for cupholders andarmrest/storage more accessible. Theup-level Titanium model features well-bolstered front seats that are a major advancement over earlier Escapes. The base front-wheel-drive S model runs with a 168-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder,while the front- and all-wheel-driveSE designation uses a 178-horsepower1.6-litre turbocharged “EcoBoost” four-cylinder. A 237-horsepower turbo four-cylinder (also from Ford’s “EcoBoost” engine lineup) is standard on the SEL and Titanium trims. The Escape is the and Titanium trims. The Escape is the
first Ford to offer both Torque Vectoring Control and Curve Control to help dis-tribute the correct amount of power to each wheel when cornering so that the vehicle maintains its intended path. Adashboard display lets the driver know where the power is distributed. where the power is distributed.

Ford’s plan for its best-selling F-150 follows a simple pattern:update the features one year, revise the engines the next. Sprinkle in some new trims and technologyoccasionally. Rinse, repeat. For 2013, Ford is betting that a sharper-look-ing F-150 and reintroducing the full-lux Limited trim will bring even more cus-tomers through the door. All models getnew trim-specific front grilles, bumpers and wheel designs, but the Limited sure is a head-turner.
Available only as a SuperCrew four-door cab, the body-colour moldings, brightwork and 22-inch wheels are setoff by segment-first high-intensity-discharge headlights. The interior is highlighted by heated and cooled red andblack leather seats, aluminum trim andpiano black accents that complement thenew MyFord Touch screen on the dash. Limiteds are exclusively powered by the popular 3.5-litre “EcoBoost” twin-turbo V6 with 365 horsepower. But that’ll bemore than enough since more than halfof F-150’s sold come equipped with a six-cylinder engine, whether the base 3.7-litre or the optional EcoBoost.

It’s hard to beat the Transit Connect’s ability to haul and carry boxes, racks, tools andparts to places where largerdelivery trucks, and even full-size pickups, can’t fit properly or cost too much to use. Nearly two metres of unobstructed floor space sitsbehind the front seats and the 1.6-metre-tall cargo hold can be accessed through dual sliding side doors or twin rear cargo doors. The same 136-horsepower2.0-litre four-cylinder that drives thefront wheels through a four-speedautomatic transmission carries over,and all Transit Connects come standard with traction and stability control tohelp prevent skids and spins. The fuel economy rings in at 9.9 l/100 km in the city and 7.4 on the highway, and there is now a prep kit for fleet ownerswanting to switch to compressednatural gas or propane. The van cannow be ordered in three versions: cargo, with or without side and/or rear windows; configured as a wagon (with side and rear glass included)with a second-row, two-person folding bench seat, or optional split-folding rear seat that can fit three passengers;
por the “personal-use” XLT Premium
Wagon, that features cloth seating for five riders, side and rear privacy glass, flip-open quarter windows, and animproved audio system. The basic van model is pretty much a blank canvas, but air conditioning, AM/FM radio and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel are included. Upscale versions add colour-keyed bumpers, remote keyless entry,a CD player and power windows, locksand mirrors.

The movement toward lower consumption con-tinues to gain momentum and we have excellent little gas-avoiders such as theFit to help out. The wedge-shaped body still looksmodern and athletic and the large front glass makes the car appear sleeker whileproviding excellent forward visibility. Asone of the biggest cars in its class – interms of interior volume – there’s anabundance of rear-passenger legroomand enough headroom for high-hatters.The interior features smart-looking gauges and control-panel layout, rich-feeling seat fabrics and 10 beverage hold-ers.
The Fit’s flip-up rear seat bench createsa load floor ideal for toting plants and shrubs while the split-folding rear seat-back folds flat for transporting cargo.

The U.S.-built (30 yearsand counting) Accord maintains a conservative presence, while undergoing a metamorphosis in style, features and running gear. The sedan shrunk nine centimetres in overall length and losesabout two centimetres between the front and rear wheels, while gaining 1.5 cen-timetres in width. Concurrently, trunkspace increases by five per cent, thanksto a more compact rear suspension. The Accord appears more svelte, with lessfront overhang.
The coupe has undergone a more sub-tle transformation and remains one of the most appealing models of its type on the road. Inside, the artistically sculpted dashboard is thankfully devoid of knob and switchgear clutter. Drivers will be particularly enamored with the clear and crisp white-on-black centre gaugesand the 20-centimetre multi-informationdisplay screen. All passengers are treat-ed to more comfort, with front-seaters enjoying more supportive buckets. There’s also an extra 2.5 centimetres oflegroom for those in back. CR-V devotees might have difficulty spotting the current model that arrived for the 2012 model year since it closely mirrors the outgoing model in all key exterior dimensions. The overall shape was only moderately tinkered-with, including updated nose and tail sections plusa dramatically shaped rear roofpillar. The interior provides a slightlyenlarged passenger area, but at theexpense of slightly reduced cargospace. Maximizing the load floor is a snap with the standard fold-down rear seat that operates by flipping a pair of levers located just inside the tailgate. The rest of the cabin is standard Honda fare, which translates into an uncluttered dashboard, comfy, supportive seats and generously sized storage compartments. Under the hood is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 185 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque. Fuel-economy is a Honda trademark, but the company claims that by activating the “ECON” buttonthat alters the transmission and airconditioning functions, drivers can savea bit more.

Currently both coupes and sedansfeature what Honda calls “one motion profile” sweeping rooflines plus thin roof pillars that help maximize visibility. Compared withthe previous models, the sheetmetalon the sedan and slightly shortercoupe is attached to a stiffer platform that reduces the distance between thefront and rear wheels a tad. Despite this, inside, Honda increased shoulder and legroom for front- and rear-seat passen-gers and modestly enlarged the trunkspace. The two-tier instrument panel is slightly more formal and the centrally located tachometer is topped by a speed-ometer and available five-inch screenthat displays key operating and audio selection info. Most Civics operate with a 140-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine. The sporty Si coupe and Si sedan use a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that gener-ates 201 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmis-sion and optional five-speed automatic are offered in regular-strength Civics, while a six-speed manual gearbox isexclusive to the Si. Motor Trend’s 2013Truck of the Year is the 2013 Dodge Ram 1500.This truck achieves best-in-class fuel economy, upto 7.9 L/100 km, thanks to innovations like a seg-ment-first 8-speed automatic transmis-sion and best-in-class aerodynamics.
When you add a class-exclusive four-corner air suspension and an all-new premium interior, it’s easy to see whyMotor Trend chose the Dodge Ram to be their trophy truck.
There are many key features thatmake the Ram 1500 a winner.
A wide gear-ratio spread with closesteps helps deliver excellent shift qual-ity and allows the engine to spend moretime at a lower rpm, resulting in better fuel economy.
Electronic shift mapping adds to agreat ride. The electronic transmission has 40 different shift maps to provideoptimal shifting, each tuned to varying performance requirements and driving demands.
The interior has also received as much attention as the outside. While the styl-ing is familiar to those who have drivenprevious generation trucks, the technolprevious generation trucks, the technol-
ogy inside is new. The variety of trim levels offered
by Ram can give you everything from a basic work truck to a near-luxuryvehicle with performance and off-roadmodels falling somewhere in between.
The Ram 1500 is often referred to asthe most “recognizable pickup on the road.” Over time, it scaled down its big-rig look so be more stream lined. rig look so be more stream-lined.

The creation of the new Dodge Dart has everything to do with both Chrysler/Dodge and Alfa Romeo being a part of the Italy-based Fiat automotive group. Although the Dart and Alfa’s Giulietta share the same basic platform, the Dart has its own distinc-tive sheetmetal, interior and powerplantselection. It is also built at a Chryslerassembly plant in Illinois. The Dart’s importance can’t be overstated enough, since Chrysler hasn’t had a compactsedan in play for about seven years. The Dart name will probably resonate witholder customers, although many youngercar buyers will likely miss the connec-tion completely. Turning a Giulietta into a Dart involved increasing the platform length by 30 centimetres and the widthby five cm. The result, claims Dodge, is a car with segment-leading scale, beating small-car luminaries. The cabin design is a standout, with futuristic-looking gauges, non-traditional control-panel dis-plays and a unique storage area beneath the front passenger seat-cushion. Base Darts are pretty basic, but on par with others in the category. The options list incorporates air conditioning, heated incorporates air conditioning, heated

With high gas prices, it’s no wonder that the demand for smaller (in some cases downright tiny) cars is growing. The recently arrived Fiat 500is managing to cash in on that trend following a getting-to-know-you slow start. For 2013, the 500’srange of powerplants has expanded to include a new Turbo model. Althoughthe top-of-the-line Abarth already comeswith a 160-horsepower turbocharged 1.4-litre engine, the Turbo-branded 500’soutput is rated at a more modest 135 horses. That doesn’t sound like much, but the number represents a one-third bump compared to the 101-horsepower 1.4. The Turbo’s visual cues includespecial front bodywork and body side trim, sport-tuned exhaust and exclusive16-inch wheels. The Turbo joins the 500c Cabrio (convertible), which is actually jjust a folding fabric sunroof ratherthan a true drop-top. The bonus is that, unlike the Mini Cooper convertible, the 500c Cabrio doesn’t lose any trunkspace, nor does its roof stack high around the rear seats to create blindspots. The 500 hatchback comes in Pop, Lounge and Sport trim levels, each featuring specific equipment levels, featuring specific equipment levels,
while the 500C Cabrio can be orderedin Pop and Lounge only. The Base 500comes with 15-inch steel wheels, air conditioning and power windows/door locks/heated mirrors. At the top, the Sport adds tighter suspension, biggergrille, aero body cladding and unique 16 inch aluminum wheels. 16-inch aluminum wheels.

Journey scores a hole-in-one as apractical, efficient and affordable carrier. In base trim, there’s seating for five people, although there’s an available two-place third-row 50/50 split bench. There are also someother clever interior storage options such as a front passenger seat with a flip-forward hinged cushion that’s ideal for concealing cameras, purses and other valuables.
And all models feature two in-floor storage compartments with removable plastic liners behind the front seats that are large enough to hold a dozen bever-age cans each, plus ice. And don’t forget the chilled storage bin inside the glovecompartment that can keep a couple of cool beverages at the ready.
Although influenced by the DodgeAvenger sedan, this roomier derivationhas about four more inches between the front and rear wheels and 20-centimetreheight advantage, but with an overall length that’s just a touch greater.
Also shared with the Avenger is a173-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder with four-speed automatic in base mod-els. Optional is a 283-horsepower 3.6-litreV6 with a six-speed auto.

The Sorento remainsa stylish, comfortablemachine that takes its high-way-cruising role seriously, regardless of weather or road status. The 2013 edi-tion, available in front- or all-wheel-drive, also offers a split-folding third-row-seating option for folks needing to transport up to seven passengers.
Buyers can choose between a base 175-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder anda 191-horsepower direct-fuel-injection version of the 2.4 and a 276-horsepower3.5-litre V6. All three are closely matchedin terms of fuel performance, although the direct-injection four-cylinder doeshit 9.5 l/100 km on highway. Ultimately, your final choice will likely boil down toaffordability and the amount of grunt you require.
A six-speed automatic is the sole trans-mission available, while all-wheel-driveis available with any engine. Standard LX features – four-cylinder and V6 in front-wheel-drive only – include air conditioning, tilt and telescopic steer-ing column and steering-wheel-located audio controls. The EX means you get all-wheel-drive, bigger wheels, leather seats, dual zone climate control and pushbutton dual-zone climate control and pushbutton

If you’ve been wondering who lit the fire under Kia’srear bumper, the most like-ly person is designer Peter Schreyer who joined thecompany after a long stintwith Audi. That’s right,Kia has a hotshot German designer andone of his best creations to date is the Optima. The Optima shares the relatedHyundai Sonata’s range of powerful four-cylinder engines: the entry-levelis a 2.4-litre unit that produces a veryhealthy 200 horsepower, while an option-al 274-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litrefour-cylinder engine quenches yourthirst for thrust. There’s also a hybrid-electric version of the 2.4, but with only169 horses (206 total with the electric motor). As you might expect, the hybridis the most fuel efficient (5.6 l/100 kmcity and 4.9 highway) but even the baseengine produces a respectable 8.7 l/100km in the city and 5.7 on the highway. Most interesting is that the hybrid sys-tem uses unique lithium-polymer batter-ies that are lightweight and can actually be formed into shapes. The hybrid cantravel at speeds of up to 96 km/h without the gas engine assisting.

It’s tough to fault the Sportage, which covers a fairly broadspectrum of price, featuresand performance. The base powerplant is a 176-horsepower2.4-litre four-cylinder that’s hooked to a six-speed manual transmission (available only in basefront-wheel drive models). A six-speed automatic is optional and returnsslightly better fuel economy than themanual.
Optional is a 260-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder. TheSportage is a front driver by nature, while the optional all-wheel-drive systemdirects 100 per cent of the engine’s torque to the front wheels until tire slip is detected. At that point, the requiredpower is instantly deployed to the rear wheels. Additionally, a manuallyselected “Lock Mode” allows for a fixed50:50 torque split at speeds up to 40 km-h for those times when sustained maximum traction is required. You canget either engine in front- or all-wheel-drive models. The base LX Sportage includes Kia’s UVO in-car hands-freeentertainment and communication system along with air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth short range cruise control, Bluetooth short-range
wireless connectivity and Hill Start Assist. The EX features dual-zone climatecontrol, power driver’s seat, keyless entry, glovebox cooler, re-tuned high-performance shocks and 18-inch wheels(16s are standard). The Rio raises the bar for small-car value, features and style. “Directfuel injection” and “six-speed auto-matic transmission” are phrases notnormally associated with entry-leveltransportation, but here they bothare in a nearly perfectly styled smallcar. The pleasing sheetmetal is high-lighted by the fact that the Rio sedan andRio 5-Door hatchback have completely different front ends. Kia didn’t just put a hatchback on the tail of the Rio andcall it a day. That kind of attention todetail extends to the dashboard layoutthat’s clearly presented and, due to a reduction of hard plastic surfaces, is farricher looking than in past Rios. The airconditioning, rear-window heat and ven-tilation toggle switches are a particularlynice touch. The standard 1.6-litre four-cylinder produces 138 horsepower and123 pound-feet of torque, which is decent in a 1,150-kilogram vehicle. All Rio mod-els come with a six-speed manual trans-mission, or optional six-speed automatic. To help save fuel dollars, automatic-equipped cars can be ordered with what Kia calls Idle Stop and Go (ISG). Thisfeature shuts off the engine after the Rio comes to a complete stop, then instantly fires it up again once the brake pedal is fires it up again once the brake pedal is
released. ISG is part of an Eco Dynamics Package that includes a special alterna-tor that disengages under high engineload (such as when heading up hill) for reduced power loss and improved fuelperformance.
Kia claims overall fuel consumptionis reduced by about three per cent withISG. That’s not much, but every little bithelps. helps.

The Trax slots below the Equinox in Chevy’s tall wagon lineup and uses the same platform as thatbrand’s Cruze and Sonicsmall cars.
In size it’s nearly 18 centimetres longer and 13 centime-tres taller than a Sonic wagon, whichprovides plenty of space for up to fivepassengers and a relatively cavernouscargo area, especially with the rear seat folded flat.
In addition, the front-passenger seatfolds flat so that lengthy items are morelikely to fit inside with the liftgate closed.
Exact base and optional contenthas yet to be announced (the Trax isexpected to arrive sometime in the first quarter of 2013), but at least three trim levels and a lengthy list of optionsare likely, with base models covering the basics plus air conditioning plus the usual power-operated windows, locks and outside mirrors. Standard for all trims is a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates140 horsepower and 148 pound-feet oftorque.

Compared to the larger CTS, the ATS is about 23centimetres shorter, threecentimetres narrower while being vertically challenged by about five centimetres. Italso surrenders 10 centime-tres between the front and rear wheels, which could make for a tighter cabin space than the CTS. Where the ATS real-ly excels is its 1,500 kg curb weight. Part of the dieting process involved an alumi-num hood, natural-fibre door panels and magnesium engine-mount brackets.
Although the ATS is available with a relatively potent 321-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 (required when adding the optionalall-wheel-drive), Cadillac is making avail-able two additional four-cylinder offer-ings. Base cars get a 202-horsepower 2.5-litre unit, while a 2.0-litre turbochargedfour-cylinder is optional.
All powerplants are mated to six-speedautomatic transmissions, but in keep-ing with its performance nature (and tosway Euro-sedan fans) the turbo engineis available with a six-speed manual gearbox.

GMC has given its big wagon adose of attitude. The squared-offfront end takes inspiration from the smaller Terrain and uses neat LED accent lighting in thenew headlight clusters. New LEDtaillights, wraparound glass and a spoiler freshen up the rear end.
The interior gets nicer plastics andleathers, highlighted by a new colourtouch-screen with optional navigation. All Acadias come with either seven oreight seats and lots of room behind thethird row for cargo. The second- and third-row seats can be folded flat formore storage, and, when upright, thesecond row slides fore and aft withone-hand operation. Chevrolet’s popular compactCruze continues to stretch itsvalue even further with new stan-dard equipment and some attrac-tive option packages. The biggestchanges include a MyLink radio (that streams music via Bluetooth), voice recognition and compatibilitywith Pandora Internet radio. A new 18-centimetre colour touch stereo with navigation and USB port can be had onvirtually every model, while new driverconvenience packages include a number of useful options such as power seats, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, rear-vision camera and more. The rest of the interior remains a highly attractive seat-ing area that wouldn’t look out of place in a more expensive sedan.
The base car is equipped with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder that produces 138horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque.Move up to the LT and LTZ models andyou’ll get and a smaller – less is more here – 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylin-der that’s also rated at 138 horsepower but with 25 pound-feet more torque than the base engine. Hyundai dropped thegauntlet with the 2011 Sonata, which was a new sedan in no way similar to its predecessor. The base engine remains a 198-horse-power 2.4-litre four-cylin-der (200 horses with the optional dualexhaust), or for more power there’s a 274-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. As well, the Sonata Hybrid operates with a 169-horsepower 2.4-litrefour-cylinder connected to a 30-kilowatt (40-horsepower) electric motor for a net output of 209 horsepower. The Hybrid’sother critical ingredient is the use of a 270-volt lithium-polymer battery thathelps the car reach speeds up to 100km/h on electric power alone, topping its direct competitors. The vehicle’s 5.4l/100 km city and 4.6 highway is near topof the class. The base 2.4 is connected to a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic, while boththe turbocharged engine and the Hybridemploy only six-speed automatics. BaseGL Sonatas include the usual power-operated controls plus air condition-ing, tilt and telescoping steering wheel,Bluetooth short-range wireless network-ing and keyless push button start.ing and keyless push-button start.
The Hybrid arrives loaded right from the get-go, but checking the PremiumPackage box adds a panoramic sunroof (standard on the Limited and 2.0T),touch-screen navigation, leather seat covers, backup camera, 17-inch wheels (16s are standard) and a premium sound system.system.

Hyundai has been ready-ing itself to better take on competitors by expanding the successful Elantra lineto include a two-door coupe and four-door hatchback. The newcomers share the swoops-and-swirls themethat’s visible along the Elantra sedan’s flanks while mimicking the more aggres-sive front-end style of the Veloster Turbo. Blacked-out grilles and unique wheeldesigns are another area of differen-tiation, but from the back, the Coupe is awfully similar to the sedan and identi-cal in both interior and exterior dimen-sions. The GT is slightly shorter, but itsexpanded cargo area allows for 23 cubic-feet (650 litres) of room with the rear seatsup (compared with 15 – 425 litres – for thesedan/Coupe) and more than 50 (1,400litres) with them folded flat. The Elantra’s1.8-litre four-cylinder engine puts out 148 horsepower (145 horsepower for states that require partial-zero-emissions tun-ing), and is at 6.8 l/100 km in the city and a seriously impressive 4.9 l/100 km on thehighway with the standard six-speed man-ual transmission (6.9/4.9 with optional six-speed automatic). All three Elantrasuse the same ultra modern dashboard anduse the same ultra-modern dashboard and
cabin design and it’s a genuine work ofart. Base Elantra L sedan models includea power-operated assortment of featuresplus a six-speaker audio system. The GThatchback joins in at the GL trim level(which gets air conditioning) while theCoupe joins in one more notch up at theGLS level, which means the Coupe has the highest starting price of the three.highest starting price of the three.

Is the three-door Veloster thedefinition of divisive? Sure. It’s a love-it-or-hate-it proposition, but more will love it this seasonas the dramatic-looking Turbohas finally arrived. The front-wheel-drive hatchback playsin a different sandbox than Hyundai’s other refreshed performancecar – the Genesis Coupe – whereaffordability and fuel economy areas important as eye-catching styling. Specifying the dual-clutch transmissionadds a selectable Active Eco mode that adjusts the computer-regulated engine and transmission mapping to maximizefuel economy. For those seeking moreadrenaline, the new Veloster Turbo usesthe same four-cylinder engine but addsa turbocharger and intercooler to bring the magic number of 201 horsepower.A six-speed manual transmission is standard, but Turbos use a regular six-speed automatic, optionally. Visually, the Turbo gets a more aggressive front end with a larger blacked out grille, a different hood, lower ground effects, arevised rear bumper and a gigantic twin exhaust poking out back. Most of theinterior bits are shared between the two,

Customers are used to Hyundai not only offering great value, but for the last few years, also offer-ing head-turning packaging. The five-passenger Tucson is no differ-ent: tight proportions, very littleoverhang beyond the front wheels and slashing longitudinal lines certainly make it look substantial and anything but “entry level.” Inside, everything fits jjust right, from the seat bolsters to theshifter and radio controls that imme-diately fall to hand. For the Tucson’ssmall size, there’s no shortage of interior room. The rear passenger doors openwide to swallow people or larger boxes. The Tucson features a four-cylinderstrategy with a 2.0-litre engine rated at a very respectable 165 horsepower andan optional 176-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with a six-speed auto-matic transmission. Although the 2.0 is available with a five-speed manual trans-mission (or the six-speed automatic) and is only available on front-wheel-drivemodels, the 2.4 steps in if all-wheel-drive is desired. The AWD comes with a number of off-roader-type functions, including hill-start-assist and downhill-brake control for added stability on steep terrain. The 2013 Tucson runs the gamut, terrain. The 2013 Tucson runs the gamut,
all the way from the inexpensive L to the Limited. One of the most telling signs that you’re in a Limited is the smootherride and reduced levels of road noise. Of course, you can count on Hyundai’s all-encompassing five-year powertrain, andfive year comprehensive warranties.five-year comprehensive warranties.

For Toyota’s Scionbranch, the FR-S repre-sents the flagship modelthat the brand has neededsince its 2004 inception.Ultimately Scion, with its more prolific dealernetwork, should move its fair share of FR-S (the caps stand for Front-engine, Rear-wheel-drive Sport) metal. And what impressive metal it is. The coupe’s long-hood-short-deck proportions are righton the money and the low hood, muscu-lar fenders and curvy roofline give it apoised, gimmick-free appearance. The interior also carries the Toyota stamp of approval, with big round control dialsflanked by even bigger round air vents. The tachometer (also big and round) sitsdead centre in the driver’s line of vision, with a smaller speedometer to the left and fuel/temperature gauges to theright. Shift-indicator lights on the tachcan be set at 100-rpm increments starting from 2,000 rpm up to the engine’s 7,400-rpm redline. The driver can also engage a warning chime that goes off when theengine’s max rev limit is about to be reached. The FR-S employs a 200-horse-power 2.0-litre “flat” four-cylinder Boxer engine (one bank of two pistons fires at engine (one bank of two pistons fires at
180 degrees to the opposite two pistons). The powertrain sits well back of the front wheels to optimize distribution of the car’s svelte 1,255-kilogram front:rear heft at 53:47.
Every FR-S is shipped from its Japanhomeland with the expected load ofstandard gear plus aluminum sport ped-als, a 300-watt Pioneer sound system and Michelin Primacy rubber fitted to a neat set of 17 inch wheels.set of 17-inch wheels.

The tiny Toyota is barelythree metres and has spacefor four people.
However, the person sit-ting directly behind thedriver will have to be suf-ficiently flexible of to sitcross-legged for extended periods. That’sbecause this so-called “micro subcom-pact” offers a unique seating arrange-ment, with the driver’s chair positioneda few inches aft of the front passenger seat. This allows for reasonable legroomavailable behind the shotgun position, but barely any behind the driver. For all practical purposes, the iQ is a three-person proposition.
With three people aboard, storage spaceis accessible through the hatch opening. With the back seat folded, stashing a cou-ple of sets of golf clubs or full-size suit-cases would not be out of the question.
The two-tone dashboard has been shaped for minimal cabin intrusion (an under-seat bin replaces the glove com-partment), while the gauges, controls and pop-up-style audio/navigation system reflect the iQ’s minimalist character. There’s nothing minimal about the 11 airbags strategically located about the cabin, however, including the first ever cabin, however, including the first-ever
rear-window airbag plus driver and front-passenger knee and seat-cushion airbags. Keeping the iQ on the go is a 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine that gener-ates 94 horsepower and 89 pound-feetof torque. Considering the car’s modest 950-kilogram curb weight, it’s likely allthat’s needed for most urban driving sce-
narios. The 1.3 is mated to a continuouslyvariable transmission.variable transmission.

The tC has to make room in the Scion garage for the upstart FR-S that its Toyota parent co-produced with Subaru. However, the tC remains appealing for other reasons, notthe least of which is an easy-on-the-wallet price tag.
The styling is derived from a recent run of Scion concept vehicles, but stillleaves buyers with plenty of freedom to make dealer-supplied (and warranted)modifications such as different wheels, spoilers and even a wide-body kit. Under the hood there’s a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that generates 180 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque.
Six-speed transmissions, eithermanual or optional automatics, handlethe shifting duties.
Scion’s philosophy of offering well-equipped cars in one trim level that canthen be customized by their owners stillrings true, so the standard-equipment list includes air conditioning, cruisecontrol, 18-inch alloy wheels, anti-lock brakes, a power dual-pane moonroof, high-output Pioneer-brand soundsystem and power windows, locks and mirrors. mirrors.
The tC also comes with the requisitesix airbags plus a driver’s knee airbag. With the rear seat (which actually reclines up to 45 degrees) and thefront passenger seat folded flat, thehatchback-accessible stowage area can swallow objects up to 2.4-metres inlength.
It’s those little extras that make the range of Toyota’s junior-division cars so popular.so popular.

The xB received redesigned head-lights and taillights and bumpers.
At the time, Scion also updatedthe xB’s front seats with bigger bolsters and new fabric, added anew covered storage bin between the front seats and installed a new adjustable steering wheel and gauges.
What remains unchanged is a pletho-ra of standard content for buyers wish-ing to spend a limited amount of theirwealth on a new car.
A 2.4-litre four-cylinder produces a healthy 158 ponies, delivered to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission or an optionalfour-speed automatic with manual-shiftcontrols.
All xBs arrive with air conditioning, keyless entry, power windows/locks/mirrors and a decent audio package. Scion dealers are so keen to have their customers return to their locales thatthe first two oil changes are on the house.
Perhaps that’s because they want to tempt younger buyers with an arrayof cool add-ons, including a navigation system with seven-inch touch screen, alloy wheels, dual DVD headrest moni-tors, interior lighting systems, overtors, interior lighting systems, over-
head console and carbon-fibre trim bits.bits.

Right now the hot modelin Mitusbishi’s lineup is the RVR. Coming in second is the Lancer, espe-cially the SE trim levelwith All Wheel Control(AWC). Its primary aim isto give those living in snowy climes asure-footed chance when dealing withnasty winter conditions, or whenever orwherever extra traction is required. TheSE AWC, which slots in between the DE and the GT trims, features a 168-horse-power 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine thatit shares with the GT. That’s a step up from the 148-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder that moves the price-leader DEand regular front-drive SE. The SE AWCis only available with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), the DE justgets the manual gearbox and the SE and GT can be had with either. Lancer canalso be had as a Sportback (hatchback)but only fitted with the 2.0 engine witheither a five-speed manual transmis-sion or optional CVT. Atop the Lancerpyramid, the Ralliart and Evolution duke it out with their WRX and WRX STIcompetitors on the street and the world’s rally racing circuits. Both feature all-wheel drive and turbocharged 2.0 litre wheel-drive and turbocharged 2.0-litre
four-cylinder engines. There’s “only” 237 horsepower to play with in the Ralliart, while the Evo spools out 291 barely bri-dled ponies. dled ponies.

The RVR is similar to theOutlander wagon in style, but shorter by more than 35 centimetres. From stem to stern, the design is cohe-sive and clean cut. It alsoworks well with the Lancer Evolution-style open-mouth nosepiece that Mitsubishi claims was inspired by jet-fighter air intakes, which as you might recall was a ’50s theme. Providing the thrust is a Lancer-based 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 148 horse-power and 145 pound-feet of torque. Afive-speed manual transmission is fitted to the base ES front-wheel-drive models, while a continuously variable (CVT)unit is standard in both the two- and all-wheel-drive SE versions, along with thenew-for-2013 GT.
Paddle shifters that control the six artificial steps (designed to emulate the more familiar operation of a conven-tional automatic transmission) are part of the CVT package. The RVR’s optional all-wheel-drive is controlled through aknob on the floor console.
Under normal driving conditions, the vehicle remains in front-wheel-drive, butwhen tire slip is detected, up to 70 percent of the engine s torque can be directcent of the engine’s torque can be direct-
ed to the back wheels. The AWD unit can also be set to the “Lock” positionthat maintains a 60:40 torque split whenthe situation calls for maximum trac-tion from all four wheels. The base RVR includes a good assortment of standard features that will please most bargainhunters.hunters.

The iMiev gets credit for notlooking anything like a regular gasoline-engine car. This bubble-bodied hatchback looks the wayyou would think and electriccar should look, in a visually appealing sort of way. The iMievis one of the smallest electrical offerings available for general consumption. Asa short-haul urban commuter pod, itaccommodates four adults as long as they’re packing light. But with only the front seats in use, cargo capacity with the 50:50 rear seat folded flat matches the space available in the larger Nissan Leaf. The iMiev’s top speed is set at 130 km/h, but driving at that velocity for anylength of time will quickly sap its 330-volt lithium-ion battery pack positioned beneath the passenger floor. The system flows power to the 49-kilowatt (66-horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque) electric motor. The iMiev’s range at about 135 kilometres per charge, closeto the 160 kilometres claimed by theLeaf and other electrics. Piloting the iMiev involves shifting the single-speedcontroller to one of three operating modes: “D” for optimum performance; “Eco” for maximum battery life; or “B”to maximize the amount of regenerativeto maximize the amount of regenerative

A 240-volt home charging systemrequires about six hours to top up thei, or 22.5-hours if you tap into a 120-volt outlet found in virtually everyhome. However future public electric-car charging stations will be able to replenish the i-Miev to 80 per cent of fullcapacity in about 30 minutes.capacity in about 30 minutes.
