This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the day the Church begins her 40 days of fasting and penance in preparation for celebration of Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection. During Lent, we as Catholics fast, give alms, and take upon ourselves penances. This is an opportunity for us to shed ourselves of worldly desires so as to refocus ourselves upon what is most important: God Himself. When reflecting on what you desire to give up for Lent, ask the Lord in prayer the following question: “Lord, what are the things that keep me from hearing your voice and doing your will?”

The Church also asks us to take upon ourselves specific practices of fasting and abstinence. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. It is helpful to understand what the Church means when she asks us to fast and abstain at different points during lent.

Fasting: The norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. This occurs on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.

Abstinence: The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon those age 14 onwards. This occurs on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays of Lent.

Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include those whose health would be jeopardized by such actions (such as the physically or mentally ill as well as pregnant or nursing women).

From the Parochial Vicar

PASTORAL/HOMEBOUND CORNER

Today we start our devotion to the seven sorrows and joys of Saint Joseph. First Joy and Sorrow: Saint Joseph, chaste spouse of Mary, great was your sorrow when, in a state of uncertainty, you were in-clined to quietly divorce Mary. But, great was your joy when the angel revealed to you the mystery of Christ's Incarnation .By this sorrow and joy, we ask you to relieve [name(s)] of all anxieties and doubts about their future and fill their hearts with confidence in the powerful protection of Mary, the Immaculate Mother of God. We ask this in the Most Holy Name of Jesus. Recite seven Our Fathers and seven Hail Marys. Thanks for joining us in prayers. Chiara

************************************************** A BIG thank-you to Roncalli 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students who made amazing Valentine's cards and to Jodi Cihak and Family for supplying the Valentines bags for our home-bound and nursing home residents. We are so very grateful!

SACRED HEART CEMETERY CORNER February is here, and spring is nowhere in sight, and we may not be visiting our cemetery as often as we would like, but please remember to pray for the souls of your deceased loved ones, as well as the souls of those who have no one to pray for them. Please continue to pray for our cemetery and that we, as a parish, will hear and do God's will for this mission. Jeff Swank-

Sexton, 225-7065 or [email protected]

Stewardship Reflections: As Catholics, we are called to acknowledge the love and care of our generous Creator and love Him in return by loving our neighbor as He loves us. God is with us. Participating in the Catholic Family Sharing Appeal with prayers and financial support is an opportunity to participate fully in this call. Your support has a direct impact on our neighbors and our own families. Over the next few weeks, I am going to be highlighting some of the ministries that the Catholic Family Sharing Appeal supports. *The largest percentage (17%) of CFSA supports the formation and education of our current priests, seminarians, deacons and chaplains. This also includes vocations awareness, promotion & recruitment, as well as priest & religious retire-ment. Currently our Diocese is blessed to have 17 men discerning the call to the priest-hood - one of them could be our future priest. This portion of the percentage of the appeal truly impacts each and every person in our parish and diocese. Thank you for your prayerful support of these ministries through CFSA! May the Lord bless you and your loved ones. - Dave Vetch
