OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL DENVER, COLORADO Food For Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark

The richness of our rituals are heightened and deep-ened during this sacred season which invites us to grow, to change, to become all that we celebrate together when we gather to embrace God’s Word and share the Lord’s table. Wednesday, we received ashes and heard God’s message of mercy and hope, of sincerely opening our hearts and minds to God’s truth and to be sincere in our response and lifestyle. Today’s readings are full of reminders of God’s ac-tions throughout history, all meant to convince us of entering into the Covenant God makes with us and is ever faithful to. Moses (1st reading) recalls all the won-drous things God has done and strives to energize the people to faithfulness. It ever comes back to God’s Word: “I put before you, life and death. Choose life!” No one chooses death, yet it happens regularly when true life is rejected (God’s life-giving Word). St. Paul (2nd reading) says this too, reminding us that one “who believes in his/her heart is justified and confesses with the mouth is saved.” People misinterpret this to mean saying, I believe suffices. Belief in the heart means understanding what is expected and doing it. It runs much deeper than words; it is living their meaning. The classic story of our Lord’s enduring the temptations in the desert is one we all know by heart. They are reminded of the way a person chooses death by seeking the false promises presented by the tempter. They are real. Many people are ruled by their desires for more, be it riches, power, security, comfort, pleas-ure, fame, ambition or whatever else that blinds them to their fellow human beings and God. It ever comes back to the one conviction of faith we commit ourselves to. Jesus tells us clearly that it is: “You shall worship the Lord, your God, and Him alone shall you serve.” Many misinterpret what serving God means. Before dying, Jesus makes it crystal clear. “You will love God and your neighbor as you love yourself.” It’s our free decision to make.
