February 13–16 | Produced by the Klamath Basin Audubon Society

The Klamath Basin Audubon Society (KBAS) welcomes you to the 35th Annual Winter Wings Festival based in Klamath Falls, Oregon. We invite you to experience the beauty of the Klamath

Basin, where hundreds of eagles and other raptors and thousands of ducks, geese, and swans take up residence in the winter. We offer a huge assortment of birding and nature-related activities for all ages and skill levels, from novice birder to life-long birding enthusiast. In addition, nature photographers of all skill levels will be impressed by the rich diversity of wildlife present in the Klamath Basin during wintertime, as well as the depth, variety, and quality of photography-oriented workshops, field trips, and instruction. Please join us for breathtaking moments in the field, insights into birds and nature, new skills, new friends, and fun! The 2014 festival is once again loaded with birding and nature photography talent. With the program expanded to include four full days, we’ve lined up three keynote participants for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The festival is thrilled to have birder extraordinaire Bill Thompson III join us for the first time in 2014. Bill is the editor of Bird Watcher’s Digest, America’s longest-running magazine for birders. At Winter Wings, Bill will lead a field trip and present the Saturday night keynote on “The Perils and Pitfalls of Birding” -- a humorous narrative about mistakes, accidents, and embarrassing situations he has experienced in his 30+ years as a birdwatcher. Bill will offer tips on how to avoid such situations while poking fun at the unique language, dress code, and food preferences of birdwatchers. The presentation is guaranteed to

generate laughs or Bill will clean everyone’s binoculars! Rick Sammon is our keynote photographer. A Canon Explorer of Light, Rick has photographed in almost 100 destinations around the world (www.ricksammon.com). Rick will lead two special photography field trips and will provide our Friday night keynote presentation on “Setting Goals

for Great Wildlife Photographs.” In an informative and fun-filled presentation, Rick will share some of his favorite wildlife photographs, taking us across America and on to Antarctica, the sub-Arctic, and Africa. With every image he will share photographic techniques, digital darkroom tips, and his photo philosophy. Brian Sullivan is one of the country’s leading raptor experts! In addition to leading a special field trip, Brian will present the Thursday night keynote and share new insights on raptor migration and identification. Brian will show us the way using photos and video, and will share a sneak peek at a new raptor ID app for smartphones and tablets. Brian is a project leader for eBird (www.ebird.org);is a co-author on the new Crossley ID Guide to Raptors; and serves as photographic editor for the Birds of North America Online. Also participating with a special role in the 2014 festival is Sharon Stiteler. She is a recognized expert in digiscoping who runs the popular

birding blog, www.Birdchick.com. Sharon is an international speaker and has written for a number of print and online publications. She wrote the recently released book, 1001 Secrets Every Birder Should Know. At Winter Wings, Sharon will host a fun Birds and Beers get-together and will lead or co-lead several digiscoping-centric activities.

Digiscoping—the marriage of a spotting scope and a digital camera to document wildlife sightings—is the hottest topic inthe birding world. Clay Taylor will discuss the various factors involved in becoming proficient in digiscoping. But the latest craze involves using your iPhone--rather than a conventional camera--in conjunction with your spotting scope to photograph birds! Indoor and Outdoor. Fee: $20

If you enjoy seeing birds in your backyard and want to learn how to identify them, or if you’ve been looking for a new nature-oriented hobby, this is the class for you. Karl Wenner will begin with a presentation that introduces the major groups of birds and explains how to use field marks to identify common birds of the Klamath Basin. Then you’ll carpool to nearby hotspots to put your new skills to work. In addition, Klamath Bird Observatory’s John Alexander will do some trapping and a banding demonstration at a private residence and we will learn how conservation scientists use subtle plumage variations to evaluate the health of our bird populations. Your last stop will be the Favell Museum. We encourage you to also register for R3 Foray at the Favell Museum - a delicious and entertaining way to end your field trip! Fee: $18

F21 Laid Back Birding and Digiscoping 9:30 am - 3:30 pm, Meet at the

OIT Dow Center entrance

Includes a special bag lunch. Limited to 10 participants. Then, on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 pm, join Rick for an optional group slide show/critique session where you can show your best shot, and end with a fun no-host group dinner at a local restaurant. What could be more fun! Fee: $200

F23 Extreme Birding Tour: Feel the Beat and See the Feet 2 [New] 2:00 - 6:00 pm, Meet at Roe Outfitters, 9349 U.S. 97

Join Darren Roe with Roe Outfitters and experience hundreds to thousands of Snow, Ross’s and White-fronted Geese as they spiral in tornado-like fashion right into your personal space. Participants will have the opportunity to photograph and video these beautiful waterfowl from blinds as they land, hop, feed and fly all around them. Roe Outfitters operates under a special use permit issued by Lower Klamath and Tule Lake NWR allowing our guided visitors the rare opportunity for this extreme birding experience. The sound of their powerful wings beating the air and the deafening chatter of thousands of geese sometimes at arms-length is stunning. The birds can be so close you see their feet with clarity and feel the rush of wings against your face. Truly an awesome delight. Limited to 10 participants. Fee: $175

W3 Digital Photography for Youth Ages 7-10 9:00 -10:30 am, OIT Room TBA

Jim Dicecco and Amber Bachman will teach budding photographers (ages 7-10) the basics of digital photography. Kids will have the opportunity to learn the workings of their own digital cameras. After they have learned the basics, the whole group will practice their skills taking photos of live birds provided by Badger Run Wildlife Rehab. After a review of their work, participants will have the opportunity to print a 4x6 inch digital photo. FREE but registration required. Must bring your own camera with memory card.

W4 Cuckoldry at the Martin Residence [New] 10:00 am - Noon, OIT Room TBA

Did you know that male Purple Martins are often cuckolds (have an unfaithful partner) or that male phalaropes have higher levels of “female” hormones during the breeding season? What does a female Sage-Grouse look for as she evaluates dancing males? As the breeding season approaches, birds begin seeking mates or renewing old bonds. Each species has its own unique displays and behaviors, some obvious and some more subtle. This program by Dan Gleason explores many of these fascinating, and sometimes not commonly known, signs of breeding in birds. Fee: $15

W5 Nik Workshop: Keeping it Simple – Chapter 2 [New] 10:00 am – Noon, OIT Room TBA

Join professional photographer Jack Graham as he shares his techniques using the Nik Collection Software suite to create the final image. This will be a complete workflow process, from camera RAW into Lightroom. Jack will demonstrate how easily you can use each program in a structured manner to bring out the best in your files. Jack emphasizes “keeping it simple” while not overlooking some of the powerful, yet easily applied, features of the Nik Collection. Enjoy Jack’s Nik webinar on YouTube (Chapter 1) before you attend the workshop. Bring a laptop to the workshop with a free trial copy of the Nik Collection software loaded on. It’s available from www.google.com/nikcollection/ for demo purposes for 15 days. Also, feel free to bring a work file to share with Jack for demonstration purposes. Fee: $40

W6 COPS: Capture, Organize, Process and Share [New]1:00 - 5:00 pm, OIT Room TBA

“It’s FunFlow instead of a workflow because if it’s not fun, I’m not doin’ it!” says Jim Stamates. As photographers, we love to do two things, make pictures and share them. In between we need to organize and process our images. Learn how easy it is in this informative, hands-on lecture and how shooting RAW improves your images and makes the creative process easier. He will use Adobe Lightroom 5 to demonstrate his workflow from capture to share and the process of developing a RAW image. By the end of this class you’ll spend less time on the computer and more time making images! Suggested, but not necessary: laptop, Mac or PC version of Lightroom 4 or 5, (if you don’t have Lightroom, download a 30-day free trial from Adobe here: www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop_lightroom ) Fee: $80

You should, for the simple reason that it is an extremely fun way to make a positive contribution to nature conservation. Here’s

how it works: eBird is an online checklist program for the birding community. Anyone, anywhere can

record their bird sightings into eBird and these data become available to scientists and birders. This is important to you for two reasons. First,

you can access all the data. If you’re planning a trip and want to know what birds are

being seen, eBird will tell you. Second, your data will be used by scientists to

understand, and ultimately protect, the

birds you enjoy. Now that’s something to feel proud about. The Klamath Bird Observatory manages the Klamath-Siskiyou eBird portal (ebird.org/content/klamath-siskiyou), which is sponsored by regional Audubon societies. eBird was developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society. Join today! Don’t forget to check out Bird Central Friday afternoon through Sunday in the OIT College Union lobby near the registration desk. This is the place to learn about what species are being seen, enter your own data into eBird, ask questions about birds you’ve seen or would like to see, and chat with other birders.
