On Sunday, February 25th, we will celebrate “Go Red Sunday-Heart Sunday” AND our African American Heritage….so, wear your red…or your splash of red…for heart health or African attire.

IN-‘FLU’-ENCE: It’s still flu season and the flu can be dangerous. Wash your hands with soap and water regularly…and use hand sanitizer. Make use of the newly placed hand sanitizer stations around the church. Also, it’s not too late to get the flu shot….it won’t keep you from getting the flu, but it will help ease the affects. “An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure.”

POP: Pearls of Praise will meet on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 9:30 am. All women are invited to join us as we introduce our new theme - "Transforming Discipleship: Changed into God's Glorious Image!" We will resume our regular schedule of meeting on the second Saturdays beginning in March 2018 (March 10th).

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Today we celebrate Scholarship Sunday. It is a blessing to be a part of a congregation that recognizes the importance of encouraging and financially supporting youth who have made a conscious decision to better themselves. Our young people must recognize the value in attaining a good education. Education has the ability to open the doors to many opportunities and new experiences. If you haven’t done so, please set aside a $100.00 contribution (or whatever God leads you to give…just give SOMETHING) for our Scholarship Endowment Fund. God has truly blessed us at First Calvary. We have been able to support so many of our young people in their pursuit of higher education. Your giving makes a difference and we thank you! Special thanks to the Scholarship Ministry for their efforts on today.
Parents, it is our duty and responsibility to train our children in spiritual, social and educational affairs. Proverbs 22:6 states, “Train a child in the way he/she should go and when they are old they will not depart from it.” The truth of the matter is the best thing a parent can give to their child/children is Jesus and secondly a good education. Designer clothes, expensive tennis shoes and cell phones are great gifts but they don’t build character. We must encourage our children to watch television less and read more. We must encourage our children to play video games less and explore their surroundings more. Don’t forget that many of our private HBCU’s were started from congregations and people of goodwill. Speaking of HBCU’s, today we welcome an old friend of mine….and a basketball buddy….Dr. Elwood Robinson, Chancellor of Winston Salem State University. We are very grateful for his coming to share with us!
I once read in a devotional that we must “TAKE AN INTEREST IN PEOPLE”! I believe we as a people have become too self-centered…too many of us are only concerned about ME, MYSELF AND I and still find something missing at the end of day. So, let’s forget about ourselves and see if there is somebody or anybody that can use our help this week, this month or this year. Our culture and history are FULL of folks that were working to do something that would help someone else. We should emulate the likes of W.E.B Dubois…Mary McCleod Bethune…Shirley Chisolm…and Dr. James E. Shepherd (who are they....what did they do??) Remember the words of the song….. “IF I CAN HELP SOMEBODY….THEN MY LIVING SHALL NOT BE IN VAIN”!
Young Adults, get ready for the Young Adult Conference, on Friday and Saturday! Plan to be there and invite someone. On next Sunday, we will celebrate Young Adult Sunday. February is almost half over and ministry is truly going on at First Calvary! Oh, don’t forget to do this week’s “Who Want to Be a ‘History-aire’” insert…and you can find the answers from last week on the bulletin board by the Food Pantry. Lastly, I want to remind us that February 25th is “Go Red Sunday”– Heart Sunday…let’s wear some red for our hearts. Remember always we are “AN EXCITING CHURCH EXCITED ABOUT ITS MISSION!”
THE DEACON’S MESSAGE
Most love stories do extremely well at the Box Office during February. Movie goers have their pick of love stories and romantic comedies during this time. Who doesn’t love a happy ending? Who doesn’t want to see the underdog win in the end? We place great emphasis on heroes overcoming the odds and winning in the end. Somehow, all the rough spots, trials and tribulations and brokenness matters little when love comes sweeping in to change the outcome of the story. Well, before you drop twenty or thirty dollars for a great love story at your local theater, you should revisit the greatest love story of all. The Bible is full of memorable passages that show the ultimate portrayal of love by Jesus Christ. You don’t have to scour through countless pages of dialogue to find it either. Here is a perfect example found in Romans 5:6-9, NLT. “When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” When we accept the love of Jesus Christ, it changes the outcome of our story.
