From the SK Call for Conscience 2019 Campaign: Christians across SK are being asked to review and sign a letter to the Minister of Health addressing our need for legislation to protect healthcare professionals from having to participate in Medical Aid in Dying (MAID), ending their patient’s life. We hope to see14,000 people participate in writing the Minister of Health by the end of Feb. Please sign the electronic letter at https://www.canadiansforconscience.ca/saskatchewan or review & sign the pre-scripted letter to the Minister of Health (back table). Thank you for living a faith that acts!

From our Pastor: We are working through a sermon series on the life of Job, with a focus on mental health. It would be helpful to read through Job a few times. I would also like to include some mental health testimonies. Others can be encouraged by hearing how you cope in the midst of your mental health challenges. Contact Pastor Dale if you are willing to share a testimony.

A Friend In Need Is A Friend Indeed

Job 4 - 31 - SEC - Feb. 10/19

Introduction:

A. Debate between Job and his three 'friends':

1. Eliphaz (3 speeches - chapters 4 & 5; 15; 22)

2. Bildad (3 speeches - chapters 8; 18; 25)

3. Zophar (2 speeches - chapters 11; 20)

4. Job (6 & 7; 9 & 10; 12-14; 16 & 17; 19; 21; 23 & 24; 26-31)

See summary of content on reverse side of this sheet.

Triangular reasoning used:

God's ______________: God is just and cannot act unjustly.

Job's _______________________: Job has led a blameless life, a

man of purity and integrity; does not deserve this treatment.

_______________________ Principle: The righteous will prosper

and the wicked will suffer in proportion to their respective

righteousness or wickedness.

B. Job's three 'friends' teach us that:

1. We are not qualified to speak for God or to ___________

others.

2. People in grief want your ________________ more than your

words.

3. Satan was more successful at getting to Job

___________________ than through the direct approach.

Job's 'friends' were:

a) Self-righteous versus ________________.

b) Condescending/__________ versus humble servants.

c) __________________/resentful versus loving comforters.

d) Rigid/unyielding versus flexible and _________________.

Conclusion:

"Let's be _________________ ministers

to those who are ______________."

Job 4 - 31: Dialogue between Job and 'friends' as to the reason for his suffering.

Summary of the content of the speeches: Eliphaz (3 speeches - chapters 4-5; 15; 22)

Innocent are protected while evil perish; angels greater than men, yet they sin; fool loses home, family, possessions, etc.; tells Job to seek God's correction and live (4-5).

Ancient wisdom argues that the wicked perish, get what they deserve (15).

Lists sins which Job likely committed; if Job return to God, he will be restored (22).

Bildad (3 speeches - chapters 8; 18; 25)

Job's children must have sinned and got what they deserved; God is just, the godless will perish while the blameless will endure (8).

Evil men will be trapped by their schemes, lose health, descendants, legacy (18).

God alone is righteous & holy; man is only a worm, we cannot be pure before him (25).

Zophar (2 speeches - chapters 11; 20)

Accuses Job of mocking; God's ways are beyond understanding; if you devote yourself to God you will find peace and security (11).

Describes terrible fate of wicked, implying that Job got what he deserved (20).

Job (responds to each speaker in turn) Anguish/sorrow:

My anguish cannot be measured; my life is meaningless; a despairing man should have the support of his friends (6-7).

No mortal can be righteous before God; God is almighty; why is God trying to destroy me?; why did God let me be born only to face this torment? (9-10).

Sarcasm/defensiveness:

"Only you are truly wise, no doubt wisdom will die with you:; "You are worthless physicians, if you'll be quiet you'll be truly wise"; asks God to withdraw his terrifying hand; seeks an audience with God (12-14).

"You are miserable comforters"; "If I were in your place I'd give comfort and encouragement": God has worn me out; my only hope is the grave (16-17).

"How long will you torment me, will you never get enough of my flesh?"; have pity on me, the hand of God has struck me; I've lost everything (19).

"Listen to me then carry on with your insults"; sometimes wicked prosper and righteous don't; God's ways are mysterious and his providence can seem unfair; I know as much about this as you do, your arguments are nonsense (21).

Resignation/indifference:

Job feels alienated & frightened; wants to find God though terrified of him; sometimes wicked flourish, other times not; judgment not always cut & dried or immediate (23-24).

God is unsearchable & awesome; he has denied me justice; "I will hold onto my integrity and never admit you are right"; to fear God & shun evil is wisdom & understanding; Job longs for day when sheltered by God, surrounded by children, respected by peers; he has sought to live a godly life, if that not true he would welcome the judgment of God, but he feels now that it is undeserved (26-31).
