Welcome to the family of God and!Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church!!

Question of the Week! What is “discernment of spirits”?!

!

THERE ARE different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit,” says Saint Paul, and he should know. He addresses “discernment of spirits” in letters to four different communities!!!

For Paul, discernment is a gift of the Holy Spirit, clearly identified by the fruits it produces, just as Jesus once said: “Each tree is known by its own fruit”; Paul spells out which fruits come from which baskets in Galatians 5. If what you’re pursuing fills you with “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and selfcontrol,” Paul would call that a validated course of action. If on the other hand you wind up with a rotten bunch of fruitimmorality, idolatry, rivalry, jealousy, acts of selfishness, factions, and so onchances are the proposal is in error.!!

Paul’s also clear in 1 Corinthians 12 that discernment of spirits is a gift some enjoy as a specialty. It’s the “many parts, one body” idea: Not all are great at everything, which is why we must be church together. Discernment of spirits is as old as the church and as fresh as you and me, because anyone on the Godquest needs to know how to detect the divine fingerprint along the way.! ! ! !

This is the Prayer Fr. Hugh used at the end of his homily this past weekend.! It was written by Pope Francis as part of his message for "World Communications Day." It is modeled on the familiar prayer of St. Francis: "Make Me An Instrument Of Your Peace."! A number of people asked Fr. Hugh if it could be placed in the bulletin.! So here it is………….!!! ! ! Lord, make us instruments of your truth…!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Sunday Evening Mass at SHSF!

February 25 @ 6:00 pm!

Discussing moral issues with family and friends can be a challenge in a culture that strongly promotes the idea that there is no objective truth. Speaking from a wealth of personal experience, renowned author and theologian Dr. Edward Sri provides 5

“keys” to enable Christians to oppose with logic and love what Pope Benedict XVI called the “dictatorship of relativism.” He also clarifies the proper understand-ing of what it means to judge and the importance of making good judgments. Pick up this CD or others that may be of interest at the main entrance to the church. Suggested donation is $3.00.!

!1st Ever Catholic Men’s Conference !

in Vermont!!!

In 2017, there were 93 Catholic Men’s Conferences around the country. All seeking to address a need. What does it mean to be a Catholic man of faith today? How can I be the husband, father, son, brother and man that the Lord is calling me to be? These are good questions! And so growing num-bers of men have been coming to-gether to learn, to pray, to be in-spired and to be strengthened to live out their faith in their families and in the wider world. The Dio-cese of Burlington is very excited to announce that it will be hosting our 1st ever Diocesan Catholic

Men’s Conference on Saturday, February 17, 2018. ! Dr. Ray Guarendi will be our keynote presenter. Dr. Ray is a father of ten, clinical psychologist, au-thor, professional speaker and national radio and tele-vision host. His radio show, “The Dr. Is In” can be heard on over 440 stations and Sirius XM channel 130. His TV show, “Living Right With Dr. Ray” is aired in 140 countries.! In addition, Fr. Tim Naples, author of “You Are That Man” will speak on male spirituality and David Allbee, husband, father and teacher, will offer practical tips and advice. ! This past November, the Diocese of Burlington hosted its 7th annual Women’s Retreat, which sold out. The question came up, why don’t we do some-thing similar for the men? Wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, perhaps this men’s conference can be given as a gift to the husband, dad, son, or brother in your life. Perhaps even as a Valentine’s Day Gift this year. ! Pope Francis in his document on family life, “The Joy of Love” offers some strong words of encouragement to men. Let us take the opportunity, in this Diocesan “Year of the Family” to step up to the plate and become the Catholic men of faith that we are called to be. ! More information and registration information can be found at vermontcatholic.org/men !

Our Parish Mission with Deacon Phil Lawson

Pope Francis has called for us to become joyfilled “missionary disciples”. He suggests that follows a process of encounter, accompaniment, and mission. What does that look like for us? In our lives? In our relationships? In our communities? Join us as we explore some of the Biblical encounters with Jesus and how no one walked away the same after meeting Jesus.! The weekend of February 24th26th Deacon Phil will be preaching at the Masses and will offer talks on Sunday evening and Monday evening. More information will follow.!

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING

THIS WEEKEND! Souper Bowl of Caring began 28 years ago with a simple prayer from a single youth group. “Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those without a bowl of soup to eat.”! Since that day, more than $100 million has been raised in communities across the country. It has be-come a powerful movement that is transforming the time around the Super Bowl into the nation’s largest celebration of giving and serving.! Through this mission, young people learn to make a positive difference in the world. Please join us in being part of this mission that is sharing God’s love with those in need. Please give generously on Super Bowl Sunday! The youth of our parish will be collecting money at the Masses on Saturday, February 3rd and Sunday, February 4th.!! All the money collected will go directly to our Parish Pantry.!
