2018 UPCOMING PROGRAMS: Our January program of Hawaiian Quilts by Ann Say was snowed out and left us icy and cold instead of thinking of warm and sunny. Ann was also scheduled to talk about her work with refuges coming to our country and learning to sew in order to make a living. We had asked for donations to be given to her program. We were hoping our quilters would be cleaning out their stash for a donation to that program. Since you have already sorted and cleaned, we will go ahead and have our Basket sale and Silent Auction at our February meeting. We will re-schedule Ann at a later date, so save some goodies for her. For any new members who are unfamiliar with our basket sale and silent auction, let me tell you a little about it. We ask that members assemble a basket filled with items from your sewing room worth at least $10.00. Special items that we think will sell for more may be put into the Silent Auction area of the sale. Items can include things like: quilt tops, orphan blocks, quilting tools…anything related to quilting! If you put in books, perhaps provide material for a pattern in the book with the pattern opened to the right page. Try to make it “a complete package”. We are also going to display the tops (I have heard that at least one has been quilted!) that have been made from Roberta's Block of the month (BOM) from last year’s Sew Bee Thursdays. Don’t forget to bring yours to show….it will be fun to see how different they all look! And finally…If we have enough time and want even more fun, we will play Bingo!

MARCH—For the March program we will have as our guest, Karen Mus-grave from the Chicago area (NO relation!) Her program is Connecting Cultures: An American Artist's Pilgrimage Connecting Cultures: celebrating Karen S. Musgrave’s more than 20 years of forging a connection between American quilts and quilts of other countries.

Robbin Musgrave, Program Chair

HOSPITALITY

We are looking forward to the Ground Hog inspired treats

at the February meeting.

It’s also Valentine’s Day this month.

BOUTIQUE NEWS:

Are you feeling inspired with the new year to “do something with your sewing space” by organizing, destashing, decluttering,

& downsizing? Think of making a donation for our quilt show Boutique coming up in September. Your donations help pay for

our speakers we have each month so you are kind of donating to yourself!

We have a table set up at the guild meetings that will be just behind the membership table so you can bring your donations

and drop them at this table – We will have this labeled “BOUTIQUE DONATIONS” so it won’t be confused with the “GIVEAWAY

TABLE”

Be generous and bring your boutique donations to the guild meetings each month including the September guild meeting.

Some things we are looking for:

Books you no longer use or need (great seller)

Quilting Patterns – new or gently used

Sewing notions – used or new—threads, sewing machine needles, irons

Rulers! Rulers! Rulers! (good sellers)

Quilting magazines – but not older than 2001.

Small handmade items for babies

Handmade quilt Christmas ornaments

Handmade items that would sell for $10.00 or less. We are finding out that the higher dollar items did not sell well

last year. People are looking for bargains when they shop the boutique.

Old/Vintage Sewing machines

Cute handmade toys for children. A big seller was the sleeping mouse in the Altoid tin bed. It was a great impulse

buy and they went fast!! Donations of Altoid tins would be appreciated. Who made this toy?

Quilting Fabrics – leftover from your projects, or something you will never use as your tastes have changed

Batting

Quilting fabric Scraps – this year we are going to try selling by the ounce instead by the bag. This is how Missouri

Star Quilt sells their scraps from their classes/projects.

Also, we are looking for a small commercial space for our Boutique workshops this summer. We have lost the use of the com-

mercial space in NKC off of Burlington that we had for the last two years as the landlord of the building was finally able to

rent that space out.

Starting in June, we would be using the space to store the boutique donations, get the fabric ready, price tag everything, and

organize all the donations for the quilt show in September. We would bring our own tables, chairs, ironing supplies, etc.

If anyone knows of a commercial place (hopefully for free or for a small nominal rent fee) in close proximity to the Salvation

Army location on North Oak where the quilt show is held, please contact Celeste Wegner at [email protected] or

phone her at 816-213-3352. Or come talk to Celeste Wegner or Mary Ann Robker at the guild meetings. We would use the

place for several hours about once or twice a week beginning in June. We want to start now to find something that was just

as nice as what we enjoyed the last two years. We will take good care of the space and leave it cleaned & secured once we

finish using it.

Uncovered

The Ken Burns Collection

January 19 - May 13, 2018

Prolific film-maker and documentarian Ken Burns loves antique American quilts.

To him, each of these textiles represents a moment in time and American history—a nexus of individuals and geography

and culture that can never be fully recovered, but which is nevertheless represented in these strikingly graphic composi-

tions. Burns is less concerned with the provenance and genealogy of his quilts than with their gestalt—both their visual

impact on the viewer, and their implicit connections to life stories.

Displayed alongside eloquent, anecdotal thoughts about quilts, collecting, art and authenticity, Burns ’ quilts function as

his films do: they spark dialogue and remind us—he hopes—of our shared humanity.
