Souper BowlWeekend

Souper Bowl XVI is February 4th & 5th.

Souper Bowl Week will “kick off” at the Deep on January 29th. The record to beat is 4,091 cans of soup set during

Souper Bowl XV.

GrowthPastor Chris Enstad Choose your metaphor:

For many the church is like an athletic event where you pay your money, pick your favorite seat, and sit and watch as paid professionals put on an event which you are then free to cheer for or boo… not to mention the Monday Morning Quarterbacking.

For others the church is compared to a big ship: very hard to steer with a lot of crew, paying passengers and an activities director to keep everyone engaged and excited about their voyage.

For me, the church is the church. For over 2000 years the Christian Church on earth has grown, declined, adjusted, stayed the same, had beautiful victories and made horrendous mistakes. The metaphors that compare God’s church to any other human activity never quite match up to the truth of the beauty of an community of believers that has endured for century after century.

In the world of ship and athletic metaphors I am writing to let you all know that over the next 12 months your pastors, staff and leadership will be calling you off the bleachers and into the game, or, to your all-hands-on-deck stations on the ship. In the real world of the reality of our congregation; Good Shepherd is confronting some hard realities in terms of our budget, staff and programs. I want you to know that I am confi dent that Good Shepherd already has the seeds of its future planted and we are prepared to be wise and good stewards of the generous gifts that have already been pledged to the mission of God in and through our church.

You will also see some new initiatives begun, some old ideas let go of for now, and changes in how we live our lives together as a church. All of these changes will be communicated as clearly as possible with as much involvement from you and your brothers and sisters as we can handle.

At the same time I invite you to pray and consider how you will respond to the invitation to a fuller participation in the life and future of your congregation. My guess, from meeting a great many of you over these past fi ve months, is that your reaction will be, “Of course! Show me where you need me!”.

We have much to learn and much to do over these next 12 months but the vision we arrive at will be shared by all and our mission will always remain the same: to be God’s church inthe world.

Thank you, as always, for your grace, gratitude and generosity with time, talents and treasures and hang on, jump in, and continue to show up over these next days and weeks.

FMSC DatesGood Shepherd has been working to bring Feed My Starving Children back for a 5th mobilepack. The event was tentatively scheduled for February 24th & 25th. At this time the event has been removed from the calendar as we look for a date in late spring or early summer of this year. The amount of money to pay for the food that is packed during a mobilepack is $22,000, that pays for 100,000 meals. The amount we have raised up to this point is just over $6,000. The amount raised does not come from the church budget it comes from personal donations. The amount already donated will transfer to the

event we will be having in late spring or summer. Please watch in the coming weeks for more information regarding the rescheduled date. We will continue to raise the funds until we meet the cost of the food.In February, there will an 80’s concert by the Alan Halverson Parson Project. All proceeds from the concert will go to Good Shepherds Mobilepack. Even with that anticipated donation it will not bring us to our goal of $22,000.

This new monthly column in The Messenger is to help Good Shepherd members be proactive about their mental health. Today’s topic is anxiety.

While all of us experience anxiety from time to time in our life, anxiety can also become a chronic patter interfering with our life’s activities and is diagnosable as a mental health disorder needing treatment. There are many causes but some common external factors leading to high anxiety are: stress at the workplace, stress from school, stress from personal relationships such as marriage, fi nancial stress, a recent emotional trauma or serious medical illness, side effects from medications, or using illicit drugs.

Did you know, of persons presenting chest pains to their MD, 43% were found to have a panic disorder, not a heart related condition? All anxiety disorders are treatable, but getting help as early as possible gives you the best chance for complete recovery. I am a trained professional provider who can treat anxiety disorders by psychotherapy.

Pastoral CareAt this is a time of transition in our church, we are making every effort to minister to our members in need. If you, a family member, or friend are admitted to a hospital, especially University Hospital, please contact the church offi ce. Due to patient confi dentiality, it is diffi cult to obtain timely information. We want to be available to visit you in the hospital, pray with you, and help in any way.

Along with pastoral care, we know that we are not reaching out to families with new babies in our congregation. Your church family at Good Shepherd wants to share your joy and encourage you at this exciting point in your spiritual journey as parents. We also want to give you information about making plans for your child to be baptized.

Please help us during this time of change and new Pastors and keep us informed by calling 271-6633 and leave a message, speak to Judy or Robyn, or e-mail one of the pastors or parish nurse.

Can you spare an hour? The Women of Vision group weekly provides snack bags for children at the Meadowood Library who are there after school, and we need your help. We are looking for small groups to volunteer to make snack bags containing a few items (sandwich, applesauce, yogurt or string cheese, and cookies), which takes about an hour or so. There are 7 weeks that need volunteers...please consider signing up your group to help at signupgenius.com and search for the sign-up called “Meadowood Snack Pack Providers” created by Jen Maier (e-mail address is [email protected]). If you have questions, feel free to contact Jen also. Thanks for considering serving with us!

Christmas Around the Tree

Wigglers in WORSHIPDoes your Wiggler know the song “Jesus Loves Me”? If not, February is a great month to teach it to your Wiggler. Don’t worry about how you sound – your Wiggler won’t mind. If your Wiggler, does know the song, can you brainstorm with your Wiggler other ways to know Jesus loves you? The song says “because the Bible tells me so” but you can change the words: Jesus loves me this I know for my mommy tells me so or Jesus loves me this I know for my Blessings tell me so or Jesus loves me this I know for God’s creation tells me so or ….. Be creative and listen to your Wiggler’s ideas.

Did you know that God sent us a Valentine? Look up John 3:16 – BEST Valentine ever. Help your reading Wiggler memorize this verse. Write the verse on a sticky note and post it on the bathroom mirror or on the fridge or a hallway wall at Wiggler eye level. If your Wiggler is a newer reader, break the verse into smaller parts to learn and add on to.

Souper Bowl XV is Almost Here - February 4th & 5th

Souper Bowl XVI is almost here – February 4th & 5th. Souper Bowl week will “kick off” at the Deep on January 29th and will be “played” during the week at AMPED. The record to beat is 4,091 cans of soup set during Souper Bowl XV. There will also be “soup pots” for your monetary donations. All the soup and money will be given to the Good Shepherd, the Allied Drive and the Badger Prairie (in Verona) Food Pantries. The church school offerings on Souper Bowl week-end will also be going to the three food pantries.

Soup suggestions preferred by the Pantry coordinators include: cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, chicken noodle, chicken with rice, vegetable beef and any of the “chunky” style soups. Packets of ramen noodles are welcome, but the need for canned soup is greater. No tomato soup, please.

Thanks for playing in Souper Bowl XVI. You are helping to tackle hunger AND feed God’s children in our community.

There’s been a lot of press recently about food waste and the availability of “ugly produce” in stores. We have a lot of hunger in America, yet one oft-cited statistic is that we throw away about 40% of our food. One way totackle the problem is at the source – limit your food purchases to limit food waste.

The following list of money-saving ways to limit food waste appeared on www.treehugger.com.

“… having some simple rules can help steer a shopper away from buying too much food; food that may likely end up in the trash … and in the meantime, save a little money along the way as well.

1. Don’t shop hungry… Research fi nds that shopping when you’re hungry leads not only to the buying of higher-calorie items, but also to buying more of everything

2. Don’t shop tiredA Swedish study found that sleep deprivation led to not only the purchase of higher calorie foods, but more food by weight as well…Another problem with shopping when you’re tired is that you may be more tempted to purchase convenience foods and ready-made meals…

3. Bring your own storage containers…take clean empty jars to the market for bulk items and foods from the deli, meat and seafood counters. Not only is this a wonderful way to avoid packaging, but it’s also a great way to maintain portion control as you can purchase custom amounts of an item.

4. Don’t buy bigUnless you know you will use all of the product, don’t fall for the “buy big and save” swindle for perishable food. The little bit of savings will mean nothing if you end up throwing the unused food out.

5. Don’t be seduced by sales…don’t be enticed to buy more than you need unless you are sure you will be able to use it. And especially don’t buy something that’s on sale just because it’s a good deal – impulse bargain shopping all too often ends up as wasteful shopping.

6. Shop frequentlyWhile shopping every day or two may not work with the one-giant-shopping-trip-a-week-lifestyle model, it defi nitely has its benefi ts: You can be less glued to a meal plan; you can take advantage of what’s local and fresh daily…”
