When I first heard music, it was either on the AM radio station or on a record player that played 45’s (singles) or LP’s (full length albums). And I'm not embarrassed to say that I missed the '78 era, because I will admit that I saw 8 tracks come and go to be replaced with cassettes. And then along came CD's. There were many albums that followed through each technology from LP to CD. 40 years later, I still like to listen to those albums thinking about how I would listen to that music in my teens and how important it was to me at that time.
12 years ago, at a company Christmas party, I got a MP3 player. I didn't know what it was, but once I did, I uploaded as many of my favourite songs from the past. I was in Peru a year later and went to Machu Pichu, and on the long train ride back to Cusco, and after such an incredible spiritual experience, I listened to those songs throughout the evening until our arrival. It was one of those nights you never forget.
Next up was the nano iPod. I not only transferred those songs onto the new technology, but eventually had 500 plus songs as I downloaded lots of CDs. Around this time, I moved to White Rock living on the beach. My best friend, Sadie (an English Springer Spaniel) insisted on a walk along the water at night. Most of the time, we would be the only visitors and would stroll along the boardwalk. I would listen to music on the iPod and she would sniff and poop. When I realized that I was all alone in the night, I would sing and dance to these songs. It was very liberating. Although embarrassing if you discovered someone was sitting on a bench in the dark watching and listening to someone sing and dance with headphones on. I never realized how much I would miss these nights once they ended. Now we have smart phones that will allow you to listen and build your own soundtracks. Once I figure this out I'm getting a new dog.
BRUCE’S CORNERBC ARTIST HIGHLIGHT :
The Chandra Russell Band is a cover band from Vancouver playing a groovy selection of soul, funk, blues and rock from the 1960's to present day hits. Joining vocalist Chandra Russell is guitarist James Sheperd, bassist Ross Langbell and drummer John Michael. Their sound is energetic, funky, and sure to get you up on the dance floor. Crowd favourites include The Rolling Stones, Amy Winehouse, Stevie Wonder, and many others.
Chandra Russell’s professional career started back in the early 1990's when still at high school. She was always writing songs and learning a handful of different instruments, and ended up finding her voice as well. A few small recording projects in Calgary and Los Angeles received some local radio airplay and club appearances by the late 1990's. After relocating to Vancouver in 2002, Chandra started growing her new network in BC by performing in local jams around the city. In 2007, she joined The Longriders Band as a back up vocalist, performing in local shows and travelling with the band to annual music festivals such as Merritt Mountainfest, Sturgis North, Boogie Bash, and Rock Creek. Chandra is also an active member and back up vocalist for original rock band Intoxicated By Nature and continues to perform locally with in all three bands.
Don’t miss the Chandra Russell Band at West Beach on Friday February 2!!!
