Another year over; a new one begins.  A time once again to reflect upon what was and for what will be.

2017 was okay.  I would give it a passing grade.  Weather-wise it was decent.  Summer started a little late in my opinion, but was nice thereafter. The golf was good.  On a personal standpoint, I was able to take a couple of trips to South America and obviously that was good.  My mother passed away and that was not good.  The year started landing in Lima, Peru, New Years Eve and kind of went from there.  So many adventures and personal changes.  The more I think about it now, it was a damn good year.  I was definitely invested in it.  And so, I've put together a soundtrack of my year (still untitled) and for only $19.99 plus postage you too can listen to my year.  Order early because I'm sure the two copies will go quickly. This was another year for losing too many of our entertainers and the fact that I'm close to their ages worries me only a little.  Many times I realize that I listened to or saw these people just a few or 40 years ago and am amazed how time goes by.  Reviewing my resolutions from last year I will admit that out of the 12 I made, I was only able to resolve one of them.  I became a better person. Although I have no measurable statistics to prove this, you can take my word.  Thanks to you out there thinking, "How could he get any better?".

2018 is officially here and I encourage all to be open to whatever the universe throws your way this year.  May you all have a great year with plenty of love and music.

BRUCE’S CORNERBC ARTIST HIGHLIGHT :

From the Stones to Puccini, JillianDaniel has a repertoire of songs that have a knack for causing audiences to spontaneously burst out in sing-along, raising their glasses in cheer, and other times, be silenced in reverence! Each of JillianDaniel’s songs are carefully chosen in order to raise a nostalgic yet effervescent reaction from the audience. High school friends, JillianDaniel’s Daniel Nargang and Gillian McLennan have come together to revisit all their favourite songs, songs they grew up on yet no one else performs, and the band have gathered a following on the Vancouver scene and are found playing regularly in many local pubs around the province.

Catch JillianDaniel at West Beach on Sat Jan 20th!

ROBBIE ROBERTSON: TESTIMONYA Review by D.M. White

Robbie Robertson has not a household name even though his credentials in the world of Rock 'n Roll should be considered impressive. As a young lad who took up the guitar in his early years between Toronto and the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, he fatefully got himself a job on the road with the ever hard-driving Ronnie "the Hawk" Hawkins. It was with him that he learned and crafted his trade as a lead guitarist and eventual song-writer.

After toiling around for years under the eye of the Hawk, the boys in the band broke away to make it on the own. In 1965, they were hired as Bob Dylan's back-up band as Dylan made his shift to electric, much to the loud discontentment of the folk music crowd. In 1968, they produced  their first album with favourable reviews and called themselves "The Band". The Band, in their  original  line-up, would go on to make seven studio albums and produce a final concert film titled "The Last Waltz", before going separate ways, never again to fully re-group.

From an early encounter with Buddy Holly to working with Martin Scorsese, Robertson's 2016 autobiography "Testimony" gives a detailed account of these  happenings  and the other stories and characters that came along the way. I have read quite a few Rock biographies through the years, sometimes to mixed interest, but find this one to be one of the better ones. A stack of stories on Dylan, life on the road and adventures in the music studio should keep most interested those who have an  inquisitiveness  or fondness for 50's to 70's rock music history and events.
