FROM THE EDITOR

During this year’s graduation, the university proudly conferred an honorary doctorate, Doctor of Laws (LLD) honour, on Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela, which she followed with an inspiring speech titled: “The Role of Law in Entrenching Democracy’’, which reminded the graduating class of 2013 of their role in furthering the aspirations of past leaders who sought to entrench in the heart of South Africa, the true meaning of democracy. The speech centered on the role of the constitution in ensuring that the rights of all South Africans is acknowledged and maintained not only by state

architected structures but by the behavior of the citizens of the country.

What I found particularly important in her address was the emphasis she placed when reiterating the bill of fundamental human rights, stating; “you are entitled to human rights simply because you are a human being”; that the right to enjoy the dignity afforded to human beings should not be preconditioned by any kind of behavior, that before you are a good person according to the perceptions of the world, you are a human being, with

dignity.

She reminded us too that the responsibility to create a world that we envisage lies not only with our elected leadership but rests in the shoulders of all those who aspire for a better future; stating that the role of government is in fact to ensure that “conditions are created for persons and communities to harness their full potential to advance themselves and society”. But isn’t that the great dichotomy of our country? That the conditions that would allow for the pursuit of an inclusive society are skewed in favour of people who respond to the needs of an already architected society, inherited from

past systems which facilitated exclusion.

From the Public Protector’s recollection of lessons learnt from the great Charlotte Maxeke, the first African female graduate in our country, she wisely concluded that the will to effect great change can be born from adversity and more importantly; when one who has been enlightened to this wisdom must remember that “injustice and peace cannot co-exit”. Perhaps the great burden layed by our beautiful constitution is for us to uphold the highest moral superiority in our demand for a fairer society even in the thickets of misfortune. She might be drinking from the same pool of wisdom as Professor Ben Okri who said; “we invest great hopes for people who’ve gone through a great overcoming […] there is no greater value to suffering than having the authority to create a better, fairer, truer and more beautiful life for its people”; a gift to all those who graduated in this historic institution.

Fort Hare Alumni is growing and this is the development that the university is striving to have as it is approaching its centenary in 2016.The university needs more female researchers and more enrollment and graduates in the near future.

Sekelwa Cosa, at 26, is amongst the top female achievers in the University of Fort Hare graduating with a PhD in Microbiology in 2013 and being recognized as one of the youngest to graduate with PhD in her field of study. She graduated with BSc (Hons)-Cum laude and MSc degree in Mricrobiogy in 2010 and 2011 respectively. the highest rate of rape reported to the police in the world. The findings of this research are particularly relevant as it was conducted in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal Provinces. The sample was drawn by Statistics South Africa and included men of all racial groups and of a range of different socio-economic backgrounds. Half of the men were

closely associated with ideas about South African manhood, predicated by assumptions of gender hierarchies and sexual entitlement of men.I recalled, after having read the study, a conversation with a father of a girl teenager who specifically instructs his daughter not to wear miniskirts as she would look cheap, and my own childhood when a 16 year old classmate [while still in high school] would tell us us; “how dare you walk around at night wearing a miniskirt and not expect rape”, the truth of the statement in reference to my own life experiences. The 21st of March was therefore a very important day as it informed us that to remove the bondage that confines a woman only to her body and how people interact with it will require the complete reconstruction of some aspects of our society. in South Africa, the study recommends the adoption of interventions such as the creation of opportunities for education, employment and advancement for men and the teaching of ideas which encourage men to be pro-social members of society from a very early age.

‘when the female will

expose everything, they call for rape now’

On the 21st of March, UFH in partnership with Rhodes University and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) held an Anti Rape March, which was an awareness campaign that publicly denounces the act of rape. And true to our mandate to ensure wide-spread communication of all our activities, we put a heads-up on our Facebook account. To say that I was a bit disturbed by one of the comments, which read; “[…] when the female will expose everything, they call for rape now”, would understate the deep sadness I felt when reading it.According to a study undertaken by the Research Medical Council in 2009, “Understanding Men’s Health and the use of violence: Interface of rape and HIV in South Africa”, South Africa had

Chinua Achebe, author of the book When Things Fall Apart, was known as the father of African Literature. He became infamous during the acrimonious language debates of the 1960s and 1970s for going against the lofty ideals and intricate academic theories of those agitating for a change in the language policies of the newly independent African states. The general feeling then was that African states needed to identify and promote an African language as the official and national language, in place of the languages of the colonizers. Achebe’s stand was simple and direct:

“a language used by Africans on the African continent is African.” History has since vindicated him. At the same time, Achebe was quite categorical about correct usage. He hit out at contemporary society for what he considered a poor reading culture, explaining that those who do not read widely would be poor at expressing themselves in writing in any language. And master of his art he was.Without recourse to mother tongue, he succeeded in rendering the thought patterns and turns of speech of the African languages of his characters into

English. In the process, he bequeathed to the Queen’s language a wealth of colorful expressions and refreshing metaphors. We have lost a great man but his legacy will live on through his books.

The University of Fort Hare was co-host of the 7th annual Robert Sobukwe Memorial Lecture, which occurred at the place our Vice Chancellor pointedly stated; “marks the convergence of the ideas of 2 great leaders, Biko and Sobukwe, whose wisdom contributed to the freedom of our country”; the Steve Biko Centre in Ginsberg. The lecture was delivered by Professor Shadrack Gutto, Director of the Centre for African Renaissance Studies at the University of South Africa. It was a celebration of Pan Africanism, which he articulated as the vision, dream and mission for African people all over the world; the call to all Africans to be adamant that only they will determine their own future. Formally established at the pinnacle of the struggle for independence from colonial rule in most African countries, the PAC sought to establish a united African continent which is centralized in ideology and governance. In his opening address at the 1959 Inaugural Convention of the PAC, Robert Sobukwe, who was founder of the Pan Africanist Congress in South Africa stated: “We regard it as the sacred duty of every African state to strive ceaselessly and energetically for the creation of a United States of Africa, stretching from Cape to Cairo, Morocco to Madagascar.” strive ceaselessly and energetically for the creation of a United States of Africa, stretching from Cape to Cairo, Morocco to Madagascar.”The lecture coincided with the 12th anniversary of the African Union, whose

When studying for exams, you’re often too soaked up in your books to pay attention to the most basic and most vital need your brain demands to maintain focus and attention – good nutrition. The brain demands high amounts of energy, using approximately 20% of the body’s daily energy intake, which comes from the foods we consume day-to-day. So maintaining a balanced diet during this period can significantly improve concentration and help you ace those exams! Here are the top three foods recommended to fuel the brain during this highly stressful period.

1. Fruits and vegetables are probably the best nutrition you can feed to your brain. Fruits offer natural sugars that your body can easily convert into energy without giving you that slump experienced after having refined sugar. They’re the best snack to pick up during those late night study sessions and can be very useful as a light snack just before going into the exam. Vegetables which are darker in colour are the superior choice as they have a higher concentration of nutrients. Try stocking up on spinach, which has been found to boost blood flow throughout the body and brain.2. Oily fish such as salmon,

sardines and trout are the best recommended brain food by scientists. They improve memory and will keep the brain healthy even beyond the exam period. A tin of canned fish can be an optimal snack, and requires no lengthy period for preparation. 3. Nuts! But be careful; not all nuts are created equally! Walnuts and peanuts are the best nuts to consume for brain health. Wallnuts have a high concentration of Omega-3 fatty acids and have been shown to improve cognitive performance while peanuts on the other hand are high in vitamin B.

main objectives are, inter alia; to rid the continent of the remaining vestiges of colonization and apartheid, promote unity and solidarity among African States, and to safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Member States while promoting international cooperation within the framework of the United Nations, echo those envisaged by the PAC of Robert Sobukwe. Mr Nkosinathi Biko, CEO of the Steve Biko foundation expressed concern that when celebrating occasions that commemorate the memory of South Africa heroes and the legacy of the country, the focus tends to only be on the names of the icons celebrated while the meaning behind the contributions they have remain bland, adding that, it is important to unpack

the leadership qualities expressed by individuals whom we consider exemplary leaders, like Robert Sobukwe. The lecture certainly succeeded in giving breadth and meaning to the ideals for which Robert Sobukwe is most celebrated.

On the 24th of May, the FRESH Environmental Organisation hosted a launch, which was a formal introduction of the society to the university. The organisation was founded by Nomawethu Mucavele and Banele Gwele, third year Law students, who after seeing the disregard for waste disposal and water management in and around the university, decided to do something about it. The society has a number of planned events in and around the East London Community aimed at raising awareness of the environment. The activities include: the development of environmental clubs in schools, waste management and recycling campaigns, tree planting and fashion shows which encourage the use of waste materials in fashion, among many.

On the 17th of May 2013 The BMF Society hosted a Maritime Roadshow on behalf of Transnet which enjoyed the participation of various institutions including WSU, FET Colleges and local high schools. The Roadshow was a part of a series of national campaigns by Transnet with the sole purpose of creating awareness on career opportunities and graduate programs available in the Maritime field of Industry. BMF has invited 20 UFH students to a Maritime Conference in Durban this coming July. The programme is/will be the final construction phase, sharing the same objectives as the Roadshow campaign.

In gearing up for the exams, the Students for Law and Social Justice Society invited all Law students in the university to a 5 km walk around the Quigney area; an effort to raise consciousness in the community of the objectives of the society, which are to purport social justice for all. The students hoped that the march would raise interest in the degree, while allowing students some time off their books to get some much needed exercise and a breath of fresh air.

Philasande Gaven is a past student of UFH with an Honours Degree in Biochemistry, currently working as a Biochemist for the Agricultural Research Council – Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute (ARC-OVI) in Pretoria. He gave us a few pointers to pass on to students on how to equip themselves for a world outside university – the all too daunting working world.

He said: Getting university distinctions won’t get you a good job (not even a job) although it has its own advantages. A lot of factors need to be taken onto consideration and people, especially university graduates need to properly equip themselves to succeed.

In the work place you don’t only need to specialize in your filed of proficiency, you must also be able to collaborate all required

skills that come as second nature in the work environment; including office work (conduct, communication, policies, management, and or finances) and you have to always ensure that your work is of the highest quality. You are expected to solve problems as they arise, discuss acceptable solutions with the concerned individuals and determine the best actions to solve the problem and implement those actions accordingly. Whatever decision and action taken, ensure that the environment, and policies (Ethics, appropriate legislation, people, animals, and other living organisms)are taken into consideration.

You need to build interpersonal skills, make yourself known, useful, build a good reputation, go out there, network

I feel honoured, although what one must understand is that; it is not easy leading students from a university, who all have different mindsets. I wish all the students of the university

all the best in their endeavours and as we move towards or centenary, I wish the university grows stronger each day so our kids could drink from this fountain of knowledge we are creating.

I have always been involved in the struggle for transformation, which includes widening access, providing opportunities for success

and ensuring that students get the services they deserve. Here, we speak of value for money and a better life for all students.

Everyday is a new opportunity to decide where your next step will be and your future will be determined by the accumulation of these daily decisions. You control your steps and therefore your destiny, so choose wisely. Whatever you’re going through, many others have not only experienced the same but got out of it just fine. You will face many defeats in your life, but never let yourself be defeated. All the best in your exams

The Bursaries Department will be our point of focus. Our students must all receive their meal allowance and non residence students must be treated the same as any other students. In addressing this matter, a turnover strategy will be proposed to the residence department. Issues around campus security and venues for church services will also be addressed by the SRC.

Featured in our student profile this issue is Nangamso Xoxo from the Alice Campus, who is doing her Honours in Geography- Human Geography. Nangamso is the recipient of the Society of South African Geographers’ (SSAG) Honours Jubilee Bursary. The Jubilee bursary is awarded by the Society of South

African Geographers to two Honours students each year to a student who has good marks in Geography, who is also in his/her honours year.

Here is what Nangamso had to say about being the recipient of the bursary; “being the recipient of this bursary for me is a blessing because it proves to me that all of my hard work is worth something and it motivates me to do even more and perform even better in my school work. Being awarded this bursary also means a lot to me and my department (Geography) because it also proves that the work and time that staff members put in students is worthwhile, students can go out there and represent the department and University.”
