Although road accident fatalities are decreasing due to the improvement of safety in vehicleslast year according to the NationalHighway Traffic SafetyAdministration close to 33 000people were killed in car accidentsin the US Compare that to the 828people who were killedWORLDWIDE in plane crashesand the difference is stark
Timothy Taylor of the Journal ofEconomic Perspectives hasrecently noted
ldquoResearchers have estimated that the911 attacks generated nearly 2200additional road traffic deaths in theUnited States through mid-2003from a relative increase in drivingand reduction in flying resultingfrom fear of additional terroristattacks and associated reductions inthe convenience of flyingrdquo
ldquoIf the new security measures aregenerating similar or even smallersubstitutions and the driving risk hasgrown as hypothesized the newmethods could be contributing tomore deaths annually on US roads than have been experienced cumulatively since 911from terrorism against air transportation targets around the worldrdquo
