Established in 2014, the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences - FCF has become the newest teaching, research and extension unit of Unicamp, incorporating the undergraduate program in Pharmacy, created in 2004. What distinguishes training offered by Unicamp from that provided by other institutions is the multidisciplinary integration of 3 university units that traditionally have been recognized for their excellence: the School of Medical Sciences (Faculdade de Ciências Médicas - FCM), the Institute of Biology (Instituto de Biologia - IB) and the Institute of Chemistry (Instituto de Química - IQ), with the participation of the The Chemical, Biological and Agricultural Pluridisciplinary Research Center (Centro Pluridisciplinar de Pesquisas Químicas, Biológicas e Agrícolas - CPQBA), which teaches the basic courses of the program. FCF and the other university units in the field provide students with technical skills and unique multidisciplinary training in the areas of pharmacy, biology, chemistry, food and health. The academic activities of the program also involve the Poison Control Center (Centro de Controle de Intoxicações - CCI) and the pharmacies of the Clinical Hospital (Hospital das Clínicas), the State Hospital of Sumaré (Hospital Estadual de Sumaré) and the Women’s Healthcare Center (Centro de Atenção Integral à Saúde da Mulher - Caism), which are components of the Unicamp hospital complex. The national reality increasingly demands professionals who are able to develop new drugs, particularly drugs that make use of the potential of Brazil’s biodiversity, with the support of scientific research and advanced technology. To meet this need, the creation of the new unit will, through the integration of its faculty members, improve the skills of its pharmacists by providing solid training in research and preparing them for the development, production and quality control of drugs. Thus, the undergraduate program in Pharmacy at Unicamp fills an existing gap by offering this specialty in a public institution of higher education in Campinas. The high competitiveness of the entrance exam has confirmed the successful creation and the importance of the establishment of the program, which is one of the most popular programs at the university. With 400 graduated professionals, it is ranked as one of the top programs in the country. Currently, the faculty members from the different areas of FCF are able to develop research projects and provide services in the areas of pharmacology and toxicology, pharmacotechnics, pharmaceutical and cosmetic technology, biotechnology, pharmaceutical chemistry, analytical toxicology, waste analysis, chemical synthesis, plant chemistry, the development of phytotherapics, pharmaceutical care, food science and quality control. A brief profile of the units responsible for the basic subjects of the Pharmacy program: FCM > A benchmark in Brazil and abroad for the teaching of Medicine, FCM has 312 faculty members, 800 undergraduate students, 1,060 graduate students and 550 resident physicians. It develops nearly 900 projects related to approximately 170 research lines. Its university hospital serves approximately 500,000 patients per year.
