PARENT EXPECTATIONS We hope that you will take an active role as an Athletic Booster Club participant and be involved in watching your child compete at his/her games. The most important thing that we expect from you is to encourage your athlete and team, and be supportive of the coaching staff. We do require that parents, with a child in-season, help work the concession stand at least once per season.

GENERAL CONDUCT Athletics is NOT a requirement and participation is strictly voluntary. Athletics, as a discipline, stresses work ethic, team play, sportsmanship, integrity, and sacrifice. Should the actions of an athlete fail to exhibit these same characteristics, the privilege of participating in athletics may be forfeited. We expect our athletes to play tough, clean, and competitive and to play to the best of their ability. We demand that each student/athlete present themselves as ladies/gentlemen at all times. This includes following all school rules and procedures while attending class at Faubion Middle School. Failure to adhere to the above conduct will result in a conference and possible disciplinary action or suspension.

CHAIN OF COMMAND We ask that you follow the proper protocol when needing to discuss any issue relating to athletics. The following steps should be followed:

1. Athlete & Coach conference 2. Email or call Head Coach 3. Parent, Head Coach & Coordinator conference

WORKOUT CLOTHES Each athlete is expected to wear the Faubion Athletic shirt and shorts during practice. A Gray Faubion T-shirt and Navy Shorts must be purchased to wear every day during workout. All athletes are also expected to wear athletic tennis shoes for all practices. Failure to wear the appropriate clothing will result in a lower class grade and a consequence as determined by the coach. You cannot wear jewelry in practice or in a game. (This includes newly pierced ears.)

EQUIPMENT & FACILITIES The school, in accordance with UIL, will issue the following equipment during each season to athletes who are participating in that sport:

• Football Helmet • Football Pads: shoulder, hip, knee, etc. • Football Uniforms for Games • Football Practice Uniforms • Volleyball Uniforms/knee pads • Cross Country Uniforms • Basketball Uniforms • Basketball Shooting Shirts for pre-game • Tennis Uniforms • Track Sweats • Track Uniforms

The following sports require you supply the following for participation:

• Football: Mouthpiece (protection of teeth), Cleats (field use) • Tennis: Racket

Equipment is to be cared for properly. If you are allowed to take your uniform home, then you must wash the uniform in COLD WATER and HANG DRY. Do not dry your clothes in the dryer, as it will ruin the letters/numbers. We will furnish your game uniform and travel sweats. You cannot wear the game uniform or the sweats anywhere in the community. This is a UIL violation. Items may only be worn to games and during the games. After your game, you must change back into your regular clothes.

LOCKER ROOM 1. Every athlete will be issued a locker and a combination lock. 2. Although locker rooms are supervised, we strongly suggest that your son/daughter keep their

combination number a secret, always check to make sure their property is locked up, and to not leave anything out on the benches. The coaching staff is NOT responsible for any lost or stolen items. It is the responsibility of each athlete to lock up his or her own valuables and to make sure the lock is secure on the locker.

3. Locker room areas must be kept clean. Athletes will be asked to pick up trash or clothes in their area every day.

BASIC WORKOUT RULES 1. Be on time for practice. 2. Girls – hair must be pulled back out of the face. 3. Socks and shoes must be worn at all times. 4. No jewelry (necklaces, rings, earrings, etc.) allowed. Newly pierced items will be removed during

practice. This is a safety issue along with the fact that we practice following UIL rules for game purposes. Having newly pierced items is not a reason to miss a workout and will be counted as an unexcused absence.

5. Always give 100% 6. Be coachable.

CUTS & TRYOUTS Based on the number wanting to play and the number we are allowed to keep will determine if we will have cuts or not. If our numbers exceed what we are expected to keep, then we will have to cut. Athletes who miss more than one day of tryouts will not be eligible to make the team. If 1 day of tryouts is missed, the athlete may make-up the missed day with a coach. Football, cross-country and track do not have cuts. However, athletes will have to qualify for spots to compete for cross-country and track. Volleyball & basketball keep a max of 32 players. Tennis keeps 13 total players from each gender with any combination of 7th and 8th graders. If your son or daughter does not make a team, they will be encouraged to try out for another sport. Failure to participate in at least one sport during the 7th grade will result in a semester grade of 50% and removal from Athletics during their 8th grade year.

PRACTICES Each athlete is expected to attend and participate in each practice. Upon doing so, they will be allowed to play in a game. If an athlete misses a practice, he or she must make it up prior to participating in the next game. Repeatedly being tardy, not having their workout clothes, etc. will result in loss of playing time.

PLAYING TIME Each athlete will play in every game each week unless they are failing a class, missed practice and have not made it up, display poor behavior in athletics or in the classroom, are continuously tardy, etc. An athlete is not guaranteed any certain amount of playing time. Usually this decision is based upon their recent practices, behavior, knowledge of the game situation, and the present game time situation. The head coach will make these decisions. If, at any time you have questions, please follow our chain of command and encourage your athlete to speak to their coach first. Coaches will not discuss playing time on game days (before or after the games). Please wait 24-hours before contacting a coach regarding any game situation.

TRAVELING TO GAMES 1. Students are expected to ride on the bus to the games. 2. Students will ride home with their parents after their game once they meet the following criteria:

a. They have a Travel Release form on file. b. He/she is signed out with designated coach. c. Out of City Games Only - Provide a note/email to the coach prior to the athlete loading the bus

to the game. 3. Parents are responsible for pick up at all MISD locations. There will not be a bus back to FMS when we

play in McKinney.

INJURIES If your son/daughter is injured during a practice or a game, what procedures do we follow?

• During practices – the coach in charge will contact the head trainer at the high school, in which your son/daughter will be asked to visit for further evaluation. Also, a sports doctor may be available if further evaluation is needed. Regardless of whom your son/daughter sees, he/she must bring back a doctor’s note explaining any restrictions and/or a clearance to play. Without a doctor’s/trainer’s note, we cannot allow an athlete to return to practice or to play in a game.

• During Home Games – A trainer will be on call for emergency situations. • Out of Town Games – Coaches will ask the school if a trainer is available. If not, the coaches will apply first

aid, may send athlete home with the parent (decision based on type of injury), and send the athlete to the high school for further evaluation the next morning. If it is an emergency, an ambulance may be called.

CHARACTER CAMP Character Camp is designed to encourage positive behavior and interactions throughout the school day and during athletics. Character Camp consists of a rigorous workout apart from the regular athletic group. Athletes are assigned to Character Camp in 5-day increments with the exception of dressing out. Athletes will participate in Character Camp each day that they are not dressed out. If the athlete is already assigned to CC then an extra day will be added for each dress code infraction. Criteria for Character Camp is listed below:

• Constant redirection – no more than 2x per day (on 3rd occurrence of same day athlete is assigned to Camp)

• Any disrespectfulness to any person • Failing more than one class at grade checks (IPR/RC) • Any office referral for behavior

Removal from Character Camp due to disciplinary issues will result in the athlete being removed from the athletic period and a 50 grade point average for the semester.

MISD MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS HANDBOOK

1. POLICIES & PROCEDURES A. STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

ISS/OSS Assignments: Any violation of the Student Code of Conduct resulting in ISS/OSS assignments will cause the athlete to be suspended from interscholastic activity (including games and practice) for the duration of the assignment. ATHLETIC CODE OF CONDUCT Participation Policies: Student athletes must participate in at least one sport per year. Failure to participate in at least one sport during the 7th grade will result in a semester grade of a 50% and removal from Athletics during the 8th grade year. Failure to participate in at least one sport during 8th grade will lower the semester grade to a 50% mark. If the student athlete is removed from athletics, they will not be allowed to return the rest of their 7th grade year and their entire 8th grade year. Attendance Policies: All players must attend practice sessions and competitions. If the student is going to miss school or practice, the athlete must call or email coaches or the absence will be unexcused. The Athletic Coordinators are the only coaches who may excuse a player from practice. Unexcused absences will result in loss of playing time and disciplinary action. Excused absences may require make up work, with the exception of supplemental academics. Injury Policies: If a student is injured, he/she must report the injury to a coach as soon as possible. Illness/Sickness will need a Doctor’s note with specific instructions as to what activities the student may or may not perform. After 3 days of non-activity, a parent note is not sufficient and a doctor’s note is required.

8

Grading Policies: Athletes will receive a weekly grade of 100 points. Athletes will receive grades daily: 10 points for dressing out and 10 points for participation.

E. STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN MULTIPLE SPORTS MISD Athletic Department policy allows and encourages a student/athlete to compete in multiple sports as long as the student/athlete can abide by all team rules and regulations and there is no seasonal conflict. A student/athlete quitting a sport after the first contest will forfeit any award for that sport and the sport will not count towards the yearly requirement of participating in one sport.

F. NON-SCHOOL PARTICIPATION/OUTSIDE PARTICIPATION A student can participate on a select/club team while participating on a school team. However, missing a scheduled school event to participate in a non-school event will result in an unexcused absence. If a student misses one school event/game, he/she will be suspended from participating in the following game. For this purpose, a tournament will be considered two games. It is, however, an expectation that he/she attends the game and supports the team.

R. GROOMING & DRESS All athletes who represent McKinney ISD will be properly dressed and hair will be neatly cut per the Student Code of Conduct. No haircuts or hair color (including the use of feathers in any form – clipped, banded, or attached permanently) will be allowed for any contest. This includes bleaching their hair blonde, Mohawks, or cutting numbers/designs in their hair, etc.

5. ELIGIBILITY B. STUDENT ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

In order to be eligible to participate in an extracurricular activity for a nine week period following the first six weeks period of a school year, a student must not have a recorded grade average lower than 70 in any course for that preceding nine weeks.

• A student, whose nine-week grade average, in any course, is lower than 70 at the end of any nine weeks period shall be suspended from participation in any interscholastic activity during the succeeding 3-week period. If, at the end of the 3-week period, the student is passing all classes, that student will become eligible 7 days after the grade was officially earned for the remainder of that current 9 weeks.

• Students may practice while they are on academic suspension.

• Student managers must meet all academic eligibility requirements.

• A student receiving an incomplete (I) in a course is considered ineligible until the incomplete is replaced with a passing grade for that grading period in a designated amount of time.

NOTE: These few rules do not address every situation that may occur in athletics or with our athletes. Therefore, please refer to the MISD Middle School Athletic Handbook and/or the Student Code of Conduct; both can be found on the McKinney ISD website. All student/athletes will adhere to both policies.
