Carl Pelini was named head coach of Florida AtlanticUniversity's football team on December 5, 2011. As thesecond head coach in the FAU program's 11-year exis-tence, Pelini brought to its helm an intellectual thinkerwhose coaching experience ranges from serving as a topassistant at one of the most storied collegiate programs inthe country, to rebuilding programs and teaching the gameof football at the high school level.

In his first season, Pelini focused on shifting the cul-ture of football on Florida Atlantic's campus. He beganwith individual accountability and all while making thechange in both the offensive and defensive schemes. Theresults were evident at season's end with a national rankimprovement of more than 20 spots in scoring defense, punt returns, turnover margin (+35) and sacks allowed. Adirect reflection of the efforts made towards individualaccountability was in the area of penalties. The Owlsimproved from a 2011 national rank of 117 (68.17) infewest penalty yards per game to No. 64 (51.15). Pelinisuccessfully mixed the returning players with newcomersthat were instrumental in the shift. He and his staff's effortsto take advantage of the on-campus stadium also came tofruition each home Saturday with an average of 300+unofficial visitors and the strongest recruiting class, both

academically and athletically in the program's history.Pelini came to Boca Raton after serving four seasons

as the University of Nebraska's defensive coordinator, adefense that was ranked as the best in the nation for a timeduring his tenure. In combined totals from 2009-11,Nebraska ranked second nationally in pass efficiencydefense, fifth in passing yards allowed per game, seventhin scoring defense and No. 10 in total defense. Pelini's rolein the Huskers' defensive dominance was recognized, as hewas a nominee for the Frank Broyles Assistant CoachAward in both 2009 and 2010, and finished among the top-five each year.

During his last two years as defensive coordinator atNebraska, Pelini's defense produced six All-Americans,two first-round NFL Draft picks and two conference defen-sive players of the year. In four seasons as Nebraska'sdefensive coordinator, four defensive players earned two-time first team all-conference honors - defensive tacklesNdamukong Suh (2008-09) and Jared Crick (2009-10);cornerback Prince Amukamara (2009-10); and linebackerLavonte David (2010-11). Nebraska also had five first-team all-conference defensive backs in the past three sea-sons.

In 2011, the "Blackshirts" had to overcome the loss ofthree all-conference players, three 2011 NFL Draft picksand two coaches. Injuries bit the Huskers in 2011 whenthey lost the services of 2011Big Ten Defensive Back of theYear Alfonzo Dennard prior tothe season opener and 2010 All-American Jared Crick for theseason in October. Despite thechallenges, Nebraska rankedamong the nation's top-25 inpass defense and pass efficiencydefense. Nebraska held sixopponents to 14 points or less, including holding three oppo-nents to their season-low pointtotal and a fourth to their sec-

ond-lowest output of the year.Individually, linebacker Lavonte David was among

four Blackshirts to contend for a major national award in2011. David accumulated 122 tackles in 2011, and in twoseasons under Pelini's direction, he set the school recordfor most tackles by a two-year player, while becoming thefifth player in Husker history to boast back-to-back 100-tackle seasons. The Big Ten Linebacker of the Year, Davidranked fifth in Nebraska history with 274 career tackles, was a finalist for the Butkus Award, and a semifinalist forboth the Chuck Bednarik Award and Lott Trophy.

The selection of both David and Dennard as Big Tenplayers of the year in their positions came on the heels of aHusker winning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year inboth 2009 (Ndamukong Suh) and 2010 (PrinceAmukamara). In 2011, a total of seven Husker defendersearned first, second, or honorable-mention All-Big Tenhonors.

The 2010 Blackshirts finished No. 11 nationally intotal defense and ranked in the top 10 in pass efficiencydefense (third), passing yards allowed (fifth) and scoring(ninth). After leading the nation in scoring defense andpass efficiency defense in 2009, the 2010 unit achieved itslofty rankings despite the loss of three starters selected inthe first four rounds of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Pelini produced a first-round draft pick for the secondstraight-year when Amukamara was the 19th overall playerselected in the 2011 NFL Draft. Amukamara was also the2010 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, marking the sec-ond straight season a Husker took home the honor. Davidwas named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, while a league-high five Huskers were first-team All-Big 12 selections. Two more earned second-team accolades and two otherswere honorable-mention picks. Nationally, four Blackshirtswere named first-or second-team All-Americans by at leastone organization.

In 2009, the Huskers led the nation in scoring defense, pass efficiency defense and red zone defense, and wasranked in the top 10 nationally in sacks, rushing defenseand total defense. Nebraska surrendered just 10.4 points pergame, posted two shutouts and allowed only two opponentsto reach 20 points. Nebraska held eight opponents to 10 orfewer points, including seven in single digits. Six ofNebraska's 14 opponents failed to score an offensive touch-down against the Blackshirts, while each of the team'sopponents failed to reach their season average in points andonly one reached its average in total offense.

Ndamukong Suh was the second overall pick in the2010 NFL Draft after being named a Heisman Trophyfinalist and the winner of the Associated Press NationalPlayer of the Year; Bronko Nagurski Trophy; RotaryLombardi Award; Outland Trophy and the ChuckBednarik Award. Suh was second on the Nebraska careerchart in tackles for loss, including a school-record tyingseven TFL in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Defensive tackle Jared Crick set the school recordwith 5.0 sacks at Baylor University, while Matt O'Hanlonintercepted a school-record tying three passes against theUniversity of Oklahoma.

In Pelini's first season in 2008, the Nebraska defensefinished second in the Big 12 in total defense and rankedamong the top 25 nationally in rushing defense. In theprocess, Nebraska allowed 127 fewer yards per gamethan in 2007.

Pelini joined the Nebraska staff after three seasons onFrank Solich's coaching staff at Ohio University. Heplayed a vital role in helping the Bobcats turn aroundtheir football program, including a nine-win season andbowl game in 2006. Those marks were firsts for the uni-versity since the 1968 campaign. The Bobcat defensecontinued the turnaround the following season, ranking inthe top 30 nationally in scoring and total defense in 2007.

Pelini spent 2004 as the defensive coordinator andsecondary coach at Minnesota State Mankato, underhead coach Jeff Jamrog, a former Husker player andassistant coach. Pelini helped the Mavericks to a 6-5record after a winless season the previous year. Prior tothis, Pelini spent the 2003 season as Nebraska's defen-sive graduate assistant, where he worked with thedefensive line and helped Nebraska to rank No. 2nationally in scoring defense and takeaways and 11th intotal defense.

As the head coach at Austintown Fitch High Schoolin Austintown, Ohio from 2000 to 2002, Pelini rebuilt aprogram that had not had a winning season for eightyears before his arrival. His coaching efforts culminat-ed with a 6-4 record in 2002.

Pelini previously was the head coach and athleticdirector at Winnetonka High School in Kansas City,Missouri, from 1996 to 2000, and also served as thedefensive coordinator at Blue Valley High School inOverland Park, Kan.

Pelini played two seasons at Columbia Universityin New York, before transferring to Youngstown State

University in Youngstown, Ohio, where he earned his bach-elor's degree in English literature in 1989. He was a defen-sive graduate assistant on Bill Snyder's staff at Kansas StateUniversity throughout the 1989 and 1990 seasons, and thenserved as a restricted earnings coach in 1991. He alsoreceived a master's degree in journalism from KSU in 1991and a master's degree in education from Ohio StateUniversity in 1993.

At FAUBrian Wright came to FAU in January of 2012. Aside from the rapid approaching signing day andhelping Carl Pelini put together the offensive coaching staff, Wright faced the task of converting FAUto an up-tempo attack as opposed to the pro-style which had been the Owls mainstay since inception. To make his task more difficult, he would move to do so with just three-starting newcomers. Bygame two the starting quarterback position was solidified. Wright and the offensive staff made greatstrides by playing to the strengths of each individual and not forcing or sticking to one answer. Itbegan with the quarterbacks. Senior QB Graham Wilbert improved his efficiency by 68% movingfrom 91.72 as a junior to 134.62. He reduced his interceptions to six after tossing double-digits in2011. More importantly for the team, Wilbert spread the ball to eight different receivers for a scoreafter tossing just seven touchdowns the previous season. Wright's system allowed Wilbert to look foranswers all over the field which opened the door for the senior to have career games with a seasonhigh 403 passing-yards against in-state rival FIU. He used the knowledge of the new system to hurtopponents with the short pass while also finding receivers with 50, 60 and 75 yard passes. Protectingthe quarterback was key to the team's success. FAU was T-104 nationally in sacks allowed prior toWright's arrival. They improved that rank by 21 spots in 2012 providing more options for the offenseto work. The offense also lost a workhorse in the backfield with the graduation of Alfred Morris, whograduated and turned in an outstanding rookie season with the NFL's Washington Redskins. To off-set this loss, Wright and the offense saw seven individuals carry the ball more than once and not oneended the season with negative yardage. As a unit, they tallied just 38 yards less than the previousseason with a dominate running back. Much of that success can be attributed to fewer sacks eliminat-ing the negative 179 yards lost by theprevious season's quarterbacks. Toexemplify the total improvement,FAU moved up 22 spots in the nation-al ranking for total yards by improv-ing its average yards per game by 102yards per game. With one season andtwo spring seasons under their belts,FAU offense will draw upon the posi-tives gained in 2012 and will begin itsascent as each recruiting class adds tothe compliment of players who fit thesystem.

At Florida AtlanticPete Rekstis was named the Owls defensive coordinator in March 2012. Rekstis came to FAU

with 18 years of experience including 15 as a defensive coordinator, eight seasons at Mid-AmericanConference member Miami University and Kent State University.

His experience, along with that of Head Coach Carl Pelini, who previously served as the defen-sive coordinator at the University of Nebraska, quickly paid off for the young Owls defense whichended the season ranked No. 27 nationally in pass defense. A primary reason was the play of seniorBrent Harstad who earned second team All-Sun Belt honors and concluded his career fifth in theleague with 103 tackles and was the only defensive back in the league to be listed among the eight. While Harstad's game gained recognition, juniors Jeremy McKnight and Keith Reaser combined for95 tackles. Freshman Cre'von LeBlanc made a splash drawing nine starts and the praise of the coach-ing staff with 42 tackles, one for a loss, and was credited with breaking-up four passes. While thesecondary played a pivotal role in the success of the defense, FAU's defense rose nearly 20 spots inthe national rankings in scoring defense and was a major contributor in the Owls’ 35 spot improve-ment in national turnover margin. The Owls will return 22 guys on the defensive side of the ball, including nine starters.

At Florida AtlanticSims joined Carl Pelini's staff in mid-December of 2011 as one of the first hires. The duo hit the

ground running with the 2012 signing day just months away. The class needed to be built, developedand signed on February 1, 2012 the Owls added 29 players to its roster, and was rated as one of thebest in the program's 12 year existence, allowing Sims to turn his attention to the 2013 class and tohis on-the-field duties as wide receivers coach.

Sims entered the 2012 spring practice with concerns for the wide receivers. The group had tal-lied just eight touchdowns in 2011 and just one receiver had more than one touchdown reception, andhe was lost to graduation. Another blow came to the unit when DeAndre Richardson, the team'sreception leader, suffered a broken ankle that would eliminate him from the 2012 campaign.

The receivers stepped up to the task with a total of 18 touchdown receptions among eight differ-ent receivers. William Dukes, a second team All-Sun Belt member, led the receivers with 63 catches, nearly three times as many catches as his previous campaign, and the sophomore averaged 81.6yards per game. Dukes saved the best for his final game of 2012 with a record setting 204 yards andtwo scores. While Dukes tallied four 100+ games and a total of six games with 96+ yards, the oppor-tunities for junior college transfer and honorable mention All-Sun Belt member Daniel McKinney.McKinney had two touchdown catches in FAU's road win over WKU and tallied a total of 48 catcheson the season. The wide receiving corps continued to develop throughout the season but questionablynone more than walk-on Jenson Stoshak who ended his freshman campaign with two starts, twotouchdowns and a scholarship. Stoshak will be one of 11 who caught a pass in 2012 that returns tothe experience unit and more importantly allwill have a spring season, in many cases two, under their belts as they enter 2013 with anew quarterback and new challenges.Sims joined the Indiana University staff in2011 after 16 years in the coaching profes-sion, a 45-19 head coaching record and onenational championship appearance as a headcoach. His day-to-day duties would take himaway from on-field responsibilities andfocused more on all recruiting aspects for theBig Ten member. Matt Edwards

Jared AllenTight endsCoaching Experience2012 - Florida Atlantic (Tight ends)2011 – Florida Atlantic (Quarterbacks)2010 – Florida Atlantic (Wide Receivers)2009 – Florida Atlantic (Offensive Graduate Assistant)

At Florida AtlanticAllen joined the staff in fall 2009 as a graduate assistant and was elevated to assistant coach inJanuary 2010. In his first season as a collegiate assistant coach, Allen watched senior Lester Jeanflourish. Jean was named second team all-conference and became FAU's first East/West Shrine Gameinvitee. Jean then joined the Houston Texans as a free agent where he was a member of the 2012-13play-off roster. Allen began recruiting in the spring of 2010 and moved from wide receivers to quar-terbacks as the team began preparation for 2011. The quarterback position came out of the spring, undecided with no clear-cut leader among the four. As preseason camp opened questions remained.Graham Wilbert was named a week before the opener. Wilbert suffered a mid-season set back allow-ing David Kooi the opportunity to step forward, only to see sophomore Stephen Curtis take advan-tage by surpassing Kooi for the No. 2 spot upon Wilbert's return. Allen worked with the inexperi-enced unit and saw flashes of winning football among the four who had a total of 13 collegiate passattempts entering the 2011 season. In 2012, the FAU Alum moved once more to tight ends coach. The new offensive system required more of the position than in years past and Allen and his corpsresponded. At season's end junior Nexon Dorvilus earned second team All-SBC and the team'sStudent Athlete of the year award while sophomore AlexDeleon earned the program's first Iron Owl Award for his off-season efforts in the weight room and in conditioning drills. Both awards exemplify the hard work and dedication that thetight ends bring to their lives, not just to the sport of football. On the field, the duo combined for 14 starts, 43 catches, 378yards and six scores. Dorvilus ended the season tops among allreceivers with five touchdowns and third on the team with 301receiving yards.

At Florida AtlanticJovan Dewitt came to FAU in January of 2012 with the responsibility of the linebackers. The veterancoach was also afforded the luxury of nucleus to build up with three players who were the team'stop-three tacklers returning from 2011. This corps proved significant as the defense shifted back to a4-3 base defense and eventually employed a dime package to defense the league's spread offenses.David Hinds led the Owls in 2011 with 110 tackles. He returned for his senior season with the bur-den of leadership and assisting the coaches with a team culture change despite the fact he wouldn'tbe with the program to reap the rewards. Hinds started every game and was a more complete playerdespite fewer tackles. Hinds recorded five double-digit tackle performances as well as his single-sea-son high, two forced fumbles and his first two fumble recoveries. While Hinds’ junior campaign wasvirtually a one man show, including the development of true freshman Andrae Kirk, it was that duowhich ended the season playing their best football. Their efforts were supported by transfer AdariusGlanton who joined the team in August and made an immediate impact, especially after RandellJohnson's preseason was slowed with injury. Glanton was hot coming out of the box with an inter-ception at Georgia andfour games with double-digit tackles, including 11 at Alabama. Kirk began theyear by taking advantage of everyopportunity and ended it with 11 tack-les his final game, including two for aloss and all-conference honorablemention honors as well as a third teamall-conference selection by PhilSteele's Magazine. The trio was two, three and four among team tackleleaders and combined for nearly 30%of the team's tackles. Linebackersaccounted for three of the team's eightinterceptions (Glanton 2, FreedomWhitfield 1) and were critical in theOwls No. 27 national rank in passdefense. FAU also improved 20 spotsin scoring defense. Dewitt alsoworked with the special teams whichsaw a 35 spot jump in kick returnsand a 24 spot improvement in puntreturns.

Kerry Dixon IIRunning BacksCoaching Experience2012 - Florida Atlantic (Assistant Coach/Running backs)2010-11 – Montana State (Assistant Coach/Running backs)2009 – Stillman College (Assistant Coach/Offensive Coordinator/WR)2008 – Texas Southern (Assistant Coach/QBs)2007 – Morgan State (Assistant Coach/QBs)2005-06 – Booker T. Washington High School

At Florida AtlanticKerry Dixon joined FAU's staff in January after working with offensive coordinator Brian Wright.Dixon's no. one problem to solve was replacing FAU's all-time rusher and current WashingtonRedskin Alfred Morris. The answer was that one back would not replace the hardnosed back.Multiple players would use diversified skills to provide different looks and different strengths and allwould combine for just 38 yards less and 167 more receiving yards. The backs were led by JonathanWallace who tallied 673 yards and two more touchdowns when combining rushing/receiving scores.Dixon's will face a new challenge in 2013 which is finding time and carries for five senior runningbacks, all with experience. The path is expected to be led by Wallace who broke onto the scene dur-ing the 2012 spring drills and continued to improve as the season progressed. Damian Fortner wassecond on the squad but led the backs with 344 receiving yards. Transfer Martese Jackson rushed for105 yards in the season opener and will return for playing time Travis Jones rounds out the groupwith a team leading 221 kick return yards. The stable will also see the emergence Jeremy Gaskins,Carry White and Antonio Washington as well as a cast of newcomers.

At Florida AtlanticLuke Meadows was one of the final staff members added with the knowledge that the offensive linewould play a critical part in the success of the offense. By joining FAU, it was the first time in 10years that Meadows would be asked to build something from scratch. While he returned severalstarters, the line would be asked to protect for a new system, and for the first time FAU’s line wouldwork with a mobile quarterback. Meadows began the year with two linemen that had earned signifi-cant playing time. He inserted junior college transfer Mustfa Johnson, saw the emergence ofDeAndre Williams and Ricaldo Henry and his line was built. The starting five remained intact anddid not miss a start, with the exception of the season's second game. Andrew Czuprynski started atleft guard his final three seasons at FAU (36-consecutive games). This stability paid off with morethan a 100 yard improvement in FAU's total offense and a national rank jump of 22 spots. The line'spass protection saw the quarterback pass efficiency rating improve by 55 spots while the sacksallowed ranking jumped 21 spots. The running game maintained its production despite losing FAU'sall-time rushing leader. The line was a true help in this matter by eliminating the sacks and a nega-tive 179 rushing yards lost by the previous season's quarterbacks. With one season and two springseasons under their belts, FAU’s offensive line will draw upon the positives gained in 2012.

Ross WatsonDefensive BacksCoaching Experience2012 – Florida Atlantic (Assistant Coach/DBs)2009-2011 – Nebraska (Graduate Assistant)2006-2007 – Mount Union (Assistant Coach/Cornerbacks)

At Florida AtlanticRoss Watson was one of the first hires for first year head coach Carl Pelini. Watson brought theknowledge and culture that the young football team would need to make the transition to new defen-sive schemes. The results translated into a team that was ranked No. 27 nationally in pass defense. While the secondary played a pivotal role in the success of the defense, FAU's defense rose nearly20 spots in the national rankings in scoring defense and was a major contributor in the Owls 35 spotimprovement in national turnover margin. Keith Reaser was the mainstay among the corners and fin-ished his junior campaign with 45 tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery which hereturned for a score. While Reaser started in every game the opposite corner was held by D'JuanSmith who started the first nine. Smith finished his sophomore season with 25 tackles, an intercep-tion and a team high eight passes broken up. Watson will return all but Demetrius Williamson, whosplit time between safety andcorner, and will have theexperience of two off seasonsand the first full season, in theprogram's 11 year history, where both the nickel anddime packages were used on aregular basis.
