April has certainly passed quickly and it’s wonderful to see our students enjoying the beautiful spring

weather during their recess and lunch breaks. We are embarking on the last months of school which

promise to be filled with exciting adventures and academic challenges. Our Junior High teachers are

beginning to prepare students for their year-end finals and Grade 9 Provincial Achievement Tests by

offering students a variety of extra tutorials in all core subject areas. These tutorials offer students a

great opportunity to re-visit concepts learned early in the year and review challenging areas of the

curriculum. We ask parents to encourage their children to attend these extra help sessions so that

they can prepare confidently for their final exams.

Our students and teachers continue working hard to prepare for our Junior High Fine Arts production,

The Wizard of Oz, taking place in the evenings of May 5th and 6th at Bishop McNally Theatre. This

exciting fine arts celebration will showcase student work in the fine arts and promises to be a

wonderful evening! To avoid disappointment, please ensure that you purchase your tickets quickly

since seating is limited. You will be receiving the Ticket Order Forms for this event soon.

As many of you know, this is the time of year when our district begins staffing for the upcoming school

year. Student registrations are also beginning to pour in and it looks like we will continue with healthy

enrollment numbers. To help us better prepare for the school year, please advise us if you are planning

to move schools for September 2018. You can call the office directly to speak with Ms. Kanuka or Ms.

Cameron at 403-500-2088.

D2L (Bright Space)

The school’s primary communication tool regarding student performance is the BrightSpace learning platform, also known as D2L. Student assignments, grades, due dates, etc., can all be found on this site. If you’re looking for the most recent results of an assignment or test, please check your child’s BrightSpace account. All families are encouraged to check BrightSpace at least once a week. If you have any questions about what you are seeing regarding your child’s performance, please don’t hesitate to contact the subject or homeroom teacher. BYOD – “Bring Your Own Device” to School

Many students bring personally owned devices to school (cell phones, tablets, ipod’s etc). Father Scollen School, nor CSSD, is liable for the loss, damage, misuse, or theft of personally owned devices brought to school. The District cannot provide technical support for personally owned devices. Please note that students are never required to bring in outside technology to school. All students will continue to be able to access technology at our school. We ask that parents and students familiarize themselves with the Digital Citizenship Expectations, included in the contract, which was sent home to all parents in October. When you signed the agreement, you agreed that if your child’s device is used in a manner which violates school rules or the law, the device will be confiscated. School staff will decide if a rule has been violated. Violation of rules, policies, or laws can result in revocation of privileges or other disciplinary action. In the event of a serious offense, law enforcement may be asked to participate in the investigation. Parents will be contacted immediately if there is a serious breach of policies or expectations. Bringing a device to school is a major responsibility. If you are concerned about theft or do not feel that your child is responsible enough to bring a device to school, DO NOT send them to school with a device. Students will not be permitted to use their devices until this contract has been returned to the school.

Diverse Learning Teachers

Our Diverse Learning team continues working with our English Language Learners and supporting our staff. A new addition to the Diverse Learning department is our DL Studio. This is a classroom space where students can come for one-on-one or small group support, as well as make up assignments and assessments. We will be continuing our subscriptions with BrainPop for the entire school as well as Raz-Kids and Mathletics for our elementary students and diverse learners.

SPOTLIGHT ON STAFF

Hi, my name is Shawna Kirby and I love being the Preschool teacher here at Father Scollen. I have been the preschool teacher here for the last six years. I enjoy working with the children, their families and learning all about the many diverse cultures. In my free time I love to cook, BBQ, make things out of wood and enjoy spending time with family and friends.

My name is Patricia Ranger. This will be my fifth year working at Father Scollen as the Learning Commons Librarian. I also work as a lunch room supervisor so you may see me out in the field wearing my bright neon orange vest. I am a graduate of the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Library Science program and have worked in the library field for the last 16 years. I love to read, and to go hiking in the mountains. I’m also a crazy cat lady.

My name is Hoda Raphael and I was born in Beirut/Lebanon. I finished my high school education in Beirut and went to college for two years to earn a diploma as an executive secretary. I moved to work in Dubai/UAE for five years then returned to Beirut to work as a private secretary in a Lebanese university. I got married and took the name Hoda R Khourieh, then moved to Calgary. It was a big change for me. I attended Bow Valley College to learn English and earned Level One Certificate in childcare. I started working in the Catholic Separate School board at St. Clement School as a noon-hour assistant. After a few months, I moved to Father Scollen School for one year. I then moved to St. Rupert School as a Special Education Assistant for five years. I moved back to Father Scollen School to work as a Special Education Assistant. I'm a certified interpreter with our school board. I'm enjoying my job, especially as I work with newcomers who have little to no English experience. I love working with kids with special needs. I am proud that I am a Canadian and living in this peaceful country

Hi, my name is Jackie Szalavary, and I am very pleased to be working with the elementary grades as a teacher assistant. This is my ninth year at Father Scollen. I have worked with the elementary grades for five years, as well as three years with the junior high grades. I really enjoy watching a lot of different sports. However, my two favorites are baseball and basketball (#WeTheNorth). I have two grown children and to me, family is very important. I, myself come from a very large family and I enjoy when we all get together to enjoy each others company. While at times times it can

be a little hectic, it is a lot of fun to get together with the family.

I became to love the world of Education through volunteering when my children went to this school. Now I have been almost 20 years with the Catholic School Board working as an Education Assistant and ELL Assistant. My position is very rewarding, my students make me smile and wanting to go the extra mile. (Hey, that rhymes!)

My name is Deb Swanson and I am a junior high Education Assistant. I have been with the school district since 1999, this is my tenth year at Father Scollen. I feel blessed each day to be part of such a wonderful school community.

Learning Disabilities (LD) Program – New Name We are pleased to share that the LD program will be continuing on next year with all of the same supports and program philosophy that it has in the past. However, after careful consideration, a decision has been made to change the name of the LD program district-wide to the “LEAD program”, which stands for “Learning Enhancements and Development”. This new name allows for the program to acquire a more positive connotation, which is not based upon the learning disability but rather the supports and goals for all students in the program. This change will be in effect for the 2018-2019 school year.

CALGARY YOUTH SCIENCE FAIR

Congratulations to Alex in

9A who represented Father Scollen at the Calgary Youth Science Fair. He researched and constructed a Rubins’ Tube which is a device used to visualize a standing wave in a tube. We are very proud of Alex who got an Honourable Mention at the fair, and hope to see more students participate in the next school year.

Kindergarten by Ms. Deck… Kindergartners are optimistic and excited that spring will officially arrive during the month of May and we are preparing by learning about some spring critters that can be found in our backyards! Students continue to build and develop their early literacy skills through ongoing theme-based units and this month will be no different! Bugs, bugs and more bugs! We await our hands on inquiry-based, in-school presentation from Scientists in School whereby Kinders get to explore all types of bugs in a fun centres-based approach. In addition to this, our budding scientists will have another opportunity to hone their skills later in the month when they get to visit the newest arrivals at the Calgary Zoo...the Pandas! Learning through our senses, and exploring and discovering the world around them will be a fun way to continue our scientific learning by developing our environmental and community awareness. Our Mother's Day Tea, hosted in early May, be a way to celebrate the special Mom's in our life who consistently give of their time, love and support. This is one way we get to share our appreciation for them and present them with special tokens of our gratitude.

Elementary Grade 1 by Ms. MacLellan… Last month, students finished up building their own community called Beach Town. Please see the picture below. The students had a wonderful time learning about our community of Temple as well as making decisions and creating their own community. Last month, we also went on a field trip to being our learning about past and present in Social Studies. We will be continuing to learn about past and present through interviews, artifacts, stories and more. We will also be working on writing our own stories with beginnings, middles and ends. In Religion, students will continue learning that Jesus is always with us. In Science, are learning about living things, we have eggs in our class and are patiently waiting for them to hatch. We made prediction on what was in the eggs before learning about chickens. Students will also have an opportunity to learn about plants and even plant and observe the plants in our classroom. In Math, we will continue to build on our skills and practice through centers.

Grade 2 by Ms. Doucet… In Language Arts we are continuing to work with our word lists to create sentences.

We are also continuing reading our novel: Stuart Little. In Social Studies we are wrapping up our unit on

Saskatoon and will be beginning to look at Communities in the past. In Science the Grade 2s have finished

their unit on Hot and Cold Temperatures and had fun doing a bunch of experiments. We are kicking off our

new unit on Small Crawling and Flying Animals and are having the Scientists in the Classroom come join

us and teach us about insects. In Math, we have started learning about 2D and 3D objects. In Religion we

will be celebrating the Month of Mary and learning the Hail Mary prayer

Grade 3 by Ms. Ferguson… This month, the Grade 3's will finish up their work with fractions in Math, and start learning about the different geometry shapes. In Social Studies, we've finished up the Ukraine and will being our study of Tunisia in Africa. For science, we will finish up the last bit of Building with a Variety of Materials, and will move onto testing different structures and designs. In Language Arts we will shift our focus and work more on our writing and grammar skills. Finally, in Religion we will focus on how the Holy Spirit is a major part in our lives and how it guides us to be better Christians.

Grade 3/4 by Ms. Ivasile… Language Arts: Students will be concentrating on writing this month. Grade 4/3 students will be studying the Barbara Mariconda writing system. Math: Students are working on fractions. Science: Grade 4/3 students will continue to work on simple machines and build their own moving machine. Social Studies: Grade 3 continue working on Ukraine and will be starting Tunisia and Grade 4 will be studying Alberta: The Stories, Histories and People.

Grade 4 by Ms. Pederson… Language Arts we are working on reading and writing short stories and poems Math the class has started multiplication and division as well as continue to work on fractions Science the students are building a “machine that moves” and mid-month we will begin plants cycles Soc. Studies we are studying Alberta’s history. Grade 5 by Ms. Min… In May, grade 5 students will be writing a Multiple Choice Part of the Religious Education District Assessment. Students are advised to use Google Classroom to review the materials beforehand. Students are moving forward with the last unit in Science: Wetland Ecosystem. Students will identify living and nonliving components of a wetland ecosystem. Students will also learn the events and factors that have changed the ways of life in Canada over time. We will be heading outside more in Phys-Ed as the soccer/football season rolls around. Please have students dress appropriately for outdoor gym.

Grade 6 by Mr. Viani… In April, Grade Six enjoyed an amazing excursion to the Youthlink Police interpretive

centre to learn more about evidence and investigation. We have been feverishly preparing for Provincial

Achievement Exams (PAT) and will be having our first English Language Arts PAT (Part A) on May 9th.

We will continue preparing for these exams throughout the month of May. The remainder of them will be at

the end of June with more information to follow. Students in Grade Six will be looking at the study of trees

and forests in science, poetry in ELA and learning more about Local, Provincial and Federal governments

and how they can personally participate in Canadian representative government.

Junior High Grades 7,8,9 Science… The grade 7’s are starting their Planet Earth unit where they will be observing and classifying rocks and minerals. The grade 8’s are moving on to their Mechanical Systems unit where they will learn about the 6 simple machines that combine to form more complex machines in order to make things easier for humans. The grade 9’s will be starting their Environmental Chemistry unit where they will be learning about the different macronutrients, the pH scale, and the nitrogen cycle. Grades 7,8,9 Social Studies… The Grade 7s will be looking at the ways in which immigration affected a young Canada and the way it contributed to our developing identity as a country. The Grade 8s will be starting the

Japan unit, studying the ways in which a unique worldview and culture can develop in a state of isolation. In

grade 9 students will be exploring the extent to which economic systems impact their quality of life.

They will be learning about different economic systems and how these systems impact Canadians in

their daily lives.

Grades 7,8,9 Math… students in grade 7 have been learning equations, and have established a

foundation for future grades towards applying these concepts. Students in grade 8 have finished

learning about surface area, and explored applications of it in the real world. As an extension to

equations, Students in grade 9 have finished studying inequalities, and their applications to real world

scenarios. Grades 7,8,9 Language Arts… Grade 7 students will be writing their written (narrative) final on May 8th. After, we will be exploring non-fiction works, as well as making our own advertisements. In grade eight, Ms. Williams' classes will be continuing their novel study of The Outsiders. The other grade eights will be learning about how to write strong and effective persuasive essays, which will be done through strategies such as debate, speeches and finally written arguments. The Grade 9s will be writing the first half of their ELA Provincial Achievement Test on May 8th. It will cover Narrative/Essays and Business Letters. Once the PAT is complete, we will begin our poetry unit. LEAD Language Arts students are completing an Empowering Writers workshop that focuses on improving their descriptive and persuasive writing skills.

Grades 7,8,9 Health… Students have been focusing on mental health, and some of the warning signs and ways to get help. We had a guest speaker join us who talked about this topics more in depth, and separated fact from fiction involving mental illness, and what to do if you, or a friend is suffering from depression.

Grade 7,8,9 Physical Education… Students have been progressing through our Badminton unit over the past

couple weeks. We have progressed into game play allowing for some friendly competition between

students. The kids are very anxious to get outside again, hopefully we get rid of all this snow covering our

fields. Flag Football is our next unit that we will be focusing on, we are looking forward to some sunny

days moving forward.

Grade 7 French… This month, the Grade 7 French students continue to work on the Family and Friends unit.

In this unit, the students learn how to describe the personality traits, physical traits and leisure activities of

themselves, their family members, and their friends in French. Soon, the students will start their Family

Tree project with the objective to learn the vocabulary used to name family members, their nationality, their

personality traits, their physical traits, and their favorite activities. Athletics and Clubs… Grade 7 and 8 Drama students have been learning to critique the work of self and others through observation of specific details. They have also been analyzing specific elements of various films and movies. Grade 9 Drama – Students are still working on their Romeo and Juliet scenes, creating and directing their own takes on the Shakespearean classic. They are working in teams to complete backdrops, props and costumes for

their specific scenes and characters. It is looking like the Flag Football season may be pushed back a week or

so based on the weather and field conditions. Tryout dates may need to be changed as a result.

ES1 by Ms. Doherty… LA - We are finishing our novel study of Redwall and learning about the elements of a graphic novel. Math - We are learning all about fractions. Most students are working on equivalent fractions and will be moving on to adding fractions shortly. Science - ES1 students with their Grade 1 buddies are attempting to hatch eggs. What will be inside? We will also be building our own ecosystems in the form of a terrarium. Social - The students are participating in a student vote and are learning all about how elections work in this country. We are also learning about how the government operates. Fine and Performing Arts… As we approach the beginning of May, the art students are finishing up their mixed media projects and they about to start working with clay. For the remainder of the school year, the grade 7 students will be creating on clay tiles and the grade 8 students will be working on clay jugs. As for the grade 9 students, they will be creating cultural masks based on masks of Northwest coast first nations . Computer Science… The grade 7’s are learning how to use spreadsheets to organize data and to make tedious mathematical calculations easier. The grade 8’s are designing their own website by using HTML code. The grade 9’s are working through programming modules on CSS and JavaScript. Fine Arts Performance… The school play, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, continues to progress as we are only 1.5 months out until our opening night on June 5! Our actors and backstage crew are hard at work creating an amazing performance, and tickets will be going on sale at the end of this month – be sure to get yours to see this incredible work in person!

Danceworks… Congratulations to our wonderful dancers who performed April 11 at Bishop McNally High School! We had a combined elementary and junior high team who showed great teamwork and school spirit when showcasing their wonderful choreography for the schools involved. They worked so hard and had a great season!
